SQL Server Express Will Not Start.
Feb 10, 2008
I can't connect to SQL Server 2005 Express. I've only just noticed this problem but I have not been using it (SQL Server) for a while as this problem is on my home machine which I have not recently used.
When I open SQL Management Studio I can't connect at all using any of the protocols with Windows Authentification. (Shared Memory / TCP-IP / Named Pipes) nor have I tried SQL authentification as I don't remember the admin password.
I have made some changes to this PC recently.
1) Installing VS2008 pro trial from the DVD download.
2) I added a DVD writer with associated software Nero (but I just uninstalled the Nero software because it gave me a feature I hadn't asked for - the desktop search - which takes tons of memory)
3) Running the network setup network wizard from a floppy. This PC is on a LAN connected via a Workgroup.
4) Added PC Tools Spyware Doctor.
5) I upgraded the RAM to 1.0 Gb.
I can't say for sure that SQL Server was working or broken after any of those changes above. Any or none of them could've caused the problem.
When I upgraded the RAM it was initially faulty and I had to put a different RAM module in.
I can't even run 'SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting'. When I try to run it, after an initial dialog opens I see nothing.
Nor can I run SQL Server 2005 surface Area Configuration to "Add New Administrator". I get the same error (see below) telling me that I can't connect.
Nor was I able to run any of the SQL Server sp1 downloads - I get told that all SQL server components are already installed.
This is running on an ASROCK mobo with an AMD Althon XP 2000+ cpu, 1.67GHz, 1 Gb RAM, Win XP sp2 with just about all the microsoft patches apart from IE7 (I'm still using IE6 on this PC).
This doesn't look like it has a solution. Should I uninstall SQL Server completely and then try to reinstall it?

I used to have both SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server Management Studio Express up running just fine until I installed (removed SQL 2005 Express) SQL Server 2005 for Developers and re-installed SQL Server Management Studio Express - now, SQL Server 2005 for Developers works, but I can not start SQL Server Management Studio Express? No error messages, simply nothing happens when I execute ssmsee.exe. Should I be using a different version of Studio?
Thanks, Tor

Hello all,
We are deploying an application using SQL Server Express to a wide variety of desktop and laptop machines. We are currently trying to decide whether we should install the SQL Server instance service to start automatically at startup or not. In the latter case, our application would start and stop the service.
Starting automatically will make our app load more quickly, which is important to our users. However, our support team is concerned that leaving the service running will leave our databases vulnerable to becoming "suspect" if, for example, a laptop user's battery dies suddenly. Of course this will always be a problem if the app is running, but our support team believes that having the service running all the time will increase the chances of this happening. One reason for their concern is that an older version of the software used MSDE which was running all the time, and they saw a good number of suspect database issues.
What is the best practice for leaving the service running, especially when there are a lot of laptop users?
Thanks,
Ben

I am new to SQL Server. I tried to read as much as possible in newsgroups prior to this post. I have tried several different ways to install this without success. The last time I attempted to install as a local service and I unchecked hide advance configuration. I am running Windows XP SP2 with all the latest updates. Is there a solution to install this properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,
I recently installed VS Express on a brand-new machine running Win XP SP2. I ran the wizard in VS Developer and created a personal website sample. When I hit CTR + F5 to test drive the sample website, it gives me the following error:
Server Error in '/WebSite2' Application. An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server).
I now realize that the SQL Server is stopped. When I tried to start the SQL server in the manager console, I get the following error log:

I downloaded SQL Express, but find nothing but SQL Server 2005 in my All Programs menu, which only gives me configure options.
None of the configure options has an interface where I can create a sample table or work with tables.
Please tell me what I am missing and if there is any doc that steps you thru starting to learn and use SQL Express.
Thanks for any help on this from a real beginner.

Hi! I am absolutely new in SQL! Pls help me answering some questions!
I have Microsoft VB Express Edition 2005.
So I created my Database1 and my own table Table1 ( by Add Item).
1)Now in "Show SQL Pane" I write my query.
When I write it with error - it is deleting (after Execute or Verify). So I must write it again! How can I save my query (error query!) for not writing it again?
2) After several tries I succeed to write query without mistake.
So I have a result ( Table2). Then I write another query and have Table3. How can I see my Table2 and IT'S QUERY???
Is there is a log option that can write all my queries and under every query - the result table in my session?
Thank u !
PS. Does Microsoft VB Express Edition 2005 contain SQL Server Management Studio?

Hello Friends
I'm running VS2005prof.+sp1, SSE Adv (with sp2) SSE ToolKit. Its been running without problems since installation (April 12.2007) Last week I ran into a problem which started off as

I am trying to start ms sql server 2005 express as a network user from originally starting as local system. I cannot start the service.
I have given this network user administrator access to sql express from the sql server surface area configuration "Add New Administrator". I have went into the local users/groups and added this network user to the 3 security groups
SQLServer2005MSSQLServerADHelperUser$SQL1
SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SQL1$SQLEXPRESS
SQLServer2005MSSQLBrowserUser$SQL1
I receive one alert int he event logs/application
EventID: 26010
The server could not load the certificate it needs to initiate an SSL connection. It returned the following error: 0x8009030d. Check certificates to make sure they are valid.
I receive five errors in the event logs/application
EventID: 26014
Unable to load user specified certificate. The server will not accept a connection. You should verify that the certificate is correctly installed. See "Configuring Certificate for Use by SSL" in Books Online.
EventID: 17182

EventID: 17182
TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x80092004, status code 0x1
EventID: 17826
Could not start the network library because of an internal error in the network library. To determine the cause, review the errors immediately prceding this one in the error log.
EventID: 17120
SQL Server could not spawn the FRunCM thread. Check the SQL Server error log and the Windows event logs for information about possible related problems.
I don't recall assigning any sql specific certificates. The reason I'm trying to run this as a network user is because an application on a remote windows server requires it.
After starting the service back running as local system as it was before, I went into the
SQL Server Management Studio Express and edited the properties for this new network user I wish to run the service as. I gave him full access including checking all grants in securables.
I now see a bit of a difference in the event logs with these errors.
EventID: 17058
initerrlog: Could not open the log file 'c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL1MSSQLLOGERRORLOG.' Operating system error =5(Access is denied).
I saw a notification when changing the sql server service's logon that the new network user has been granted the log on locally right.
The second and last new error is
EventID: 17053
UpdateUptimeRegKey: Operating system error 5(Access is denied.) encountered.

I downloaded and installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Installs completed successfully, and I can launch the SS Management Studio, but when I launch SS Business Intelligence Development Studio, I get message saying "Windows is searching for devenv.exe". When I search for this file I don't find it on my hard drive.
I thought I'd reinstall the SS Express Edition Toolkit, but I can't find this application in the Control Panel Installed Programs list, so I can't uninstall it.
Any ideas as to how I can get SS Business Intelligence Studio working?

What is the Difference between the SQL Server Express Bundled with C#/VB VS the downloadable SQL Server Express SP1 with advanced Services?
I installed C# with SQL Server Express, however I wanted to add the Full Text Searching and the SQL Server Management Studio Express, so I downloaded and installed the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP1. When I installed it over top of my current installation, it complained of version mismatching, and then C# failed to recognize that I had SQL 2005 Express installed at all.
What I'd like to know is, which version is more current (they have to be different, they had different version numbers, one was 9.xx.xxxx the other was 2005.9.xx.xxxx) The one bundled with C#, or the SP1 downloadable one.
Firstly, I want to be up todate as far as security patches, and Secondly, how do I add the full text searching and SSMSE to the one bundled with C# without breaking it.

HI
Q1: Does Sql Server 2005 Express support Web/Internet to other SQL Server 2005 Express Clients or does it have to Synch across the internet to a fully installed setup SQL Server 2005 with IIS?
Q2: Does SQL Server 2005 Express support Direct Replication between other SQL Server 2005 Express clients?

Hello,
I have installed SQL server 2005 enterprise edition on Windows 2003 virtual PC (full installation). The installation went through successfully. However, after install completed, I cannot find any of the client tools under the start menu -> all programs -> Microsoft SQL server 2005 menu. The only item listed under the SQL server 2005 is Configuration Tools, which is used to configure the database server.
I have tried to install the client component again (in case I didn't install them at the first place) but the installation process cannot be started since it detected that the client components have been installed already. I can also see the sql server native client running in the services.
The server engine is working fine since I can connect to that sql server using another machine where I have the client tool (SQL server management studio).
One of my friends has exactly the same problem. He installed the sql server 2005 Standard edition on windows 2003 server (full installation), but the client tools are not showing up in the start menu either.
I also checked the location for the SQL server management studio (Microsoft SQL server/90/Tools/Binn/VSShell/Common7/IDE), there is only one folder called publicAssemblies listed under. Is this correct or something is missing?
Thanks

Hi all,
I downloaded the SSEUtilSetup.EXE and extracted the SSEUtil.exe to a folder of C:drive of my PC that is Windows XP Pro. I plan to learn the CLR programming via user-instance of SQL Server Express. I need to have SQL Server Express Utility installed. Please help and tell me how I can install SSEUtil.exe in my PC and how I use it to interact with SQL Server Express.
Thanks,

I had a small power outage and after that, SQL Server (2000) is not starting. I press the start button, it looks like it tries to do something (since all the buttons get disabled) and then its back to square one. I tried this from command line: sqlservr.exe -c -f but it does not help either.
I checked the SQL Server logs and this is what I found:

Dear Friends,I cannot start my SQL Server 2005. When I'm trying to conect to local database it's showing me error:TITLE: Connect to Server------------------------------Cannot connect to WIN2006.------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)This error mean that server not started. When I read more details (error log in SQL Configuration Manager) I found that the source of the problem - "master" table was compressed. It should be decompressed to start server. What's this? I'm seeing this kind of error first time. Need your advise guys!
