I have a windows forms application that I would like to put in production on several machines. Each machine will contain it's own data and does not need to be networked.
I can use my local connection right now to access the data, but I would like to change my connection so that it will work when installed on a client's machine.
My Current connection string looks like this:
Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Documents and SettingsMYNAMEMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsInterimApplicationInterimApplicationInterim.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True
I believe I could use something like this:
Dim connectionString as string = "Data Source=" & Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ProgramFiles) & "/InterimApplication/data/Interim.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
However, I am not sure. Also, if the client does not install to the default directory, then this may cause the application to not work properly.
Lastly, I am not sure if the client machine needs any additional software on their computer in order for the application to be capable of connecting to the data source.
Any recommendations, ideas, comments, or general help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Everyone,
I have a Report Server setup on my laptop (XP Pro SP2). I have developed a report which I would like to view from a Windows Forms Application (VB.NET) using a ReportViewer. When I try it from the local machine it works correctly, but if I try to connect and preview the same report from my other PC (Vista Home Premium) I am getting the "Unable to connect to the remote server. A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because the connected host failed to respond." error.
I have setup the Processing mode to Remote and correctly setup the ReportPath and ReportServerUrl using:
With rptRetEmp
.ProcessingMode = Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ProcessingMode.Remote
.ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = New Uri("http://192.168.1.2/CPMReports")
.ServerReport.ReportPath = "/CPM_Reports/Test"
.ServerReport.Refresh()
.RefreshReport()
End With
Where CPMReports is the Report Server virtual directory and CPM_Reports is the folder where the report Test resides.
I do not know if this has anything to do with the fact that Vista Home does not have Report Services enabled or it is just a permissions problem. I have red several posts that describe similiar problems, but I could not find a solution.
Thank you for your help.

Also, some of the variables for the SSIS package are captured via the windows form, is there any way to pass this on to the SSIS package and then executing it? Can someone point me in the right direction to how to do this.

Hi,
I have SQLExpress and SQL2005 both installed on my W2K3 server. I can access my databases with SQL2005 without problems.
As far as my memory serves me, I have not made any manual changes to the SQLExpress setup - nor will I as my users will have no knowledge as to how to - it must be an out-of-the-box solution.
I am using VS2005 to create a Windows Form project. I used VS2005 IDE to create a database as MyBookings.mdf . I have, in the IDE successfully created a table. This is all using SQLExpress.
I now wish to access the database and have the following as my connection string:
string connectionString = "Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;Timeout=60;Initial Catalog = MyBookings;Application Name=SQLExpressTest;AttachDBFilename=.\MyBookings.mdf";
The following error message is generated when I try to access the db from within my program:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
The SQL log enties for my past several tries are:
007-03-20 09:57:50.92 Logon Cannot attach the file 'MyBookings.mdf' as database 'MyBookings'. [CLIENT: <local machine>]
2007-03-20 09:58:13.92 spid51 Error: 5105, Severity: 16, State: 2.
2007-03-20 09:58:13.92 spid51 A file activation error occurred. The physical file name '.MyBookings.mdf' may be incorrect. Diagnose and correct additional errors, and retry the operation.
2007-03-20 09:58:13.92 Logon Error: 1832, Severity: 20, State: 1.
2007-03-20 09:58:13.92 Logon Cannot attach the file '.MyBookings.mdf' as database 'MyBookings'. [CLIENT: <local machine>]
I have spent 2 days researching this and have come up with no solution.
Can someone help me please.
Thank you.

I have a user who is trying to access the SQL 2005 server with 2 seperate accounts(using Windows Authentication). With one account he can connect just fine, but with the seccond he recieves a logon fail error. The only difference that we can tell is that the first account uses a password for our kerberos domain, and the second (that fails) uses a longer pass phrase (which does use spaces as characters). My intuition tells me that shouldn't matter, but I've been wrong before. Can anyone confirm this, or correct me if I'm wrong? This is using ASP.NET 2005 for the front end. The exact Exception details are: "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'domainuser "

Hello, I'm new to the forum and new to SQL, ASP.NET, etc. I am creating an intranet site for my company in VS 2005 and have run into a very annoying problem that I can't seem to solve. I have tried Googling it and came up empty. I have a database in SQL Express 2005 and my website will be accessing several tables within the database. I can retrieve info just fine and I can update, delete, etc just fine using gridview or other prebuilt tools, but when I add a few text boxes and wire a button to the SqlDataSource.Insert() command, I get a new record that is full of null values except for the identity key I have set. The kicker is that I am also using a master page and when I duplicate the web page without the master page link, everything works just fine. The following snippets show what I'm doing:<InsertParameters><asp:FormParameter Name="Name" Type="String" FormField="txtName" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Location" Type="String" FormField="ddlLocation" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Issue" Type="String" FormField="txtProblem" /></InsertParameters>Of course I match the formfields to the text boxes, create an onclick event for my button, the sqldatasource is configured correctly, it just doesn't work with the master page no matter what I do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello all,
I would like my newly converted to .NET 2.0 Windows Forms application to use an Sql Express database instead of MSDE. Previously, development was done on the default SQL Server instance using the full SQL Server 7.0. When deployed, MSDE was used with a named instance. The connection string in the application settings needed to be modified as part of the deployment. Now I've converted to .NET 2.0 and to Sql Server 2005, and/or Sql Express.
What I'd really like to do now is have a project within my solution that, when built, creates the database by running scripts, and deploys that database to the output directory of the executable.
I want this to run as part of a continuous integration solution that, so that every so often, the entire project is checked out, built (code and data), all is copied to a bin/[debug,release] directory, unit tests run, etc.
Has anyone done this successfully? Any pointers?
Thanx,
WNC

Using Forms Authentication With Windows Apps--
I've used the code from UILogon.aspx (Forms Authentication Security Extension) to extend a proxy server in a windows application to manage the cookie when connecting to a Reporting Services web service.

Hello. I've read some similar topics (most of them on this forum), but none of them helped.
I have a stored procedure which runs fine on SQL Server (in 0 ms). The problem occurs when i try to run it under a WindowsForm application (C#).
The following code
Code Block
SqlCommand cmdUpdate;
SqlConnection sqlCon = GetConnection();
cmdUpdate = new SqlCommand("StoredProcedure_Name", sqlCon);
cmdUpdate.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
sqlCon.Open();
cmdUpdate.CommandTimeout = 300;
cmdUpdate.ExecuteNonQuery();
produces the exception: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." on the ExecuteNonQuery() line.
It's not a problem with the CommandTimeout or the ConnectionTimeout (from within the connection string), they are both set to 300 (and even when set to 0, the problem is the same).
It's very strange, because only two stored procedures don't work, the others work without any problems and under SQL Server (using EXEC stored_procedure) all of them work fine. It seems like the stored procedure is executed, but no response is returned to the client (the WinForm app), thus the timeout exception.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi.
I wonder if it is possible to set forms authentication for report manager but leave report server "as it is". I need to authenticate users from external LDAP and can't use windows authentication for report manager, but I would also like to leave report server open for anonymous users. In that way authenticated administrators could create reports which anonymous users could read.
I tested the Security Extension Sample and got it working when I rewrote the authentication part with my own LDAP authentication.
If I have understood correctly, the report manager is just application inside report server so is it possible to use forms authentication with one application but still leave the report server with Windows authentication?

Hello,
I am trying to use the forms view control to do a simple web app. My issue is, I cant get the connection to automatically generate insert, update and delete statements. I tried to do this manually but I always get an error. I have read that I need all the keys selected--this still didnt work. I have about 6 tables picked in my view, and if I pick one of them then this advanced feature works. I have the primary keys selected.
here is my saved view. this is in SQL 2000.
SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT dbo.ADDRESS.EMAIL, dbo.ADDRESS.FIRST_NAME AS [first name], dbo.ADDRESS.LAST_NAME AS [last name], dbo.ADDRESS.STATE, dbo.ADDRESS.TEL1 AS phone, dbo.INVOICES.QUOTE_NO AS [SALES QUOTE], dbo.CUST.NAME AS Company, dbo.ITEMS.ITEMNO AS [Course Number], dbo.ITEMS.DESCRIPT AS S_Descript, dbo.ADDRESS.JOB_TITLE AS [Job Title], dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.[MONTH], dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.S_DATE, dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.END_DATE, dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.IS_CONFIRMED, dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.IS_PAID, dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.CUST_CODE AS Account, dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.SCHEDULE_ID, dbo.CUST.CUST_CODE, dbo.INVOICES.INVOICES_ID, dbo.X_INVOIC.X_INVOICE_ID, dbo.ADDRESS.ADDR_CODEFROM dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE INNER JOIN dbo.CUST ON dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.CUST_CODE = dbo.CUST.CUST_CODE RIGHT OUTER JOIN dbo.X_INVOIC RIGHT OUTER JOIN dbo.INVOICES ON dbo.X_INVOIC.ORDER_NO = dbo.INVOICES.DOC_NO LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.ADDRESS ON dbo.INVOICES.CUST_CODE = dbo.ADDRESS.CUST_CODE LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.ITEMS ON dbo.ITEMS.ITEMNO = dbo.X_INVOIC.ITEM_CODE ON dbo.CUST.CUST_CODE = dbo.ADDRESS.CUST_CODEWHERE (dbo.X_INVOIC.ITEM_CODE LIKE 'FOT-%') AND (dbo.X_INVOIC.STATUS = 7) AND (dbo.ADDRESS.TYPE IN (4, 5, 6)) AND (dbo.ADDRESS.EMAIL <> '') AND (dbo.ADDRESS.COUNTRY = 'UNITED STATES') AND (dbo.ITEMS.CATEGORY = 'TRAININGCLASSES') AND (dbo.TRAINING_SCHEDULE.CUST_CODE = 'joe')ORDER BY dbo.ADDRESS.STATE
I am new to this so I am not sure what to include.

Hey Guys:
--- Not sure if this should be moved to webforms forum, or if it belongs here ---
Alright, I have been dealing with this issue for a few days now, and have found a few solutions but they all seem to throw different errors so I figured I'd ask here.
What i am trying to do is have a webform where user enter data, and have the data passed across forms, then displayed and inserted into a database on another form. THe first for has an asp:rangevalidator control dymamicly built so I cannot simply take of the tags and use the old style.
Eventually the user will be directed to a paypal form, and upon successful completion be redirected to the page with the insert command within it, but for now, passing it to a second page for review, then inserting it will work.
I am not sure how to accomplish this, a tutorial or a code example would be great!! I have though about panels, creating public objects, etc, but all the solutions I have found have one issue or another when I attempt to create them.
I'm using asp.net 1.1, VB.net and SQL server.
Thanks,
Brian Sierakowski

Please forgive my ignorance here. I'm reading as many of the For Dummy and IDIOT's guides as I can. So far, I must brag and say, I've done fairly well. (For a beginner)
Hopefully, this is an easy problem to fix, or at least to explain where I'm going wrong. This is as stripped out as I can make it:
- Using Access Database Project files to provide forms and reports for Customer Service Reps over a Windows network while using SQL Server 2005 Express as my engine.
- I am using a simple combo box in the Access form to allow CSRs to type in a job number and therefore find and fill in related info to the visible fields.
- This used to work when Jet was my database engine. Now, I receive an error, stating "The expression After Update you entered as the event property setting produced the following error: Error accessing file. Network connection may have been lost.
In asterks it says, The expresion may not result in the name of a macro, the name of a user-defined function, or [Event Procedure]. There may have been an error evaluationg the function, event, or macro.
I don't care how I get it done, I just want this simple feature to work again, so my CSRs will quit hounding me.
PLEASE HELP! Keep in mind, I don't know Visual Basic or T-SQL very well.
THANKS!!

Hello,I would like to know if it is possible to create a form in Access2000,which would function like a calendar for 8 operating rooms inhospital, showing which hours are those closed for a specific date.For this intersection I would like to be appeared the name of thedoctor, the name of the patient and the kind of operation.Furthemore I would like this intersection to be marked in the calendarwith a colour, showing that this room is closed for that time.The data for this form are going to be extracted from a table storedin SQL Server 2000.Generally the whole application is stored in SQL Server( storedprocedures, tables, diagrams etc.)1)How this can be done? Is this going to be through VB or not? Can Imake a template in Excel spreadsheet put it in a formand apply code on it?I would like also to make forms(in Access) for user-entry data thatwill use stored procedures of SQL Server with pushing the OK button.The stored procedures would take as arguments the user-entry data fromtheforms.I thought to make a pass-through query which would use a VB functionand would take as arguments the user's valuesand after would pass these values in the stored procedures.2)Can this be done through the pass-through query, that is SqlServer "understands" VB or better Access pass-through query processthe VB commands before be connected with the Sql Server?What do you think of this as an idea?My problem is that I really don't know how to combine VB code withTransact Sql code.Can you give an example or any ideas where I can find the relativeinformation?Thanks you in advance.

Hi,
Sorry for the long post but I'll try to give a maximum of information.
I've tried to implement Form Authentication for Reporting Services. Right now, just about everything works as I would hope for, i.e.:
When I try to access http://<server>/ReportServer$SQLSERVER_2005, I am redirected to the authentication form.
When successfully authenticated, I can access the report
I can display reports throught the ReportViewer Web control by passing the authentication cookie.
Etc.
(Note: My implementation of Form Authentication was inspired by http://www.devx.com/dotnet/Article/26759/0/page/1 which seems similar to Microsoft Sample)
(The $SQLSERVER_2005 suffix is because SQL Server 2000 is also installed on the server, but I don't think Reporting Services 2000 is installed)
There is one thing which does not work however and it is the Report Manager.
When I try to access http://<server>/Reports$SQLSERVER_2005, I would expect to be redirected to the /Pages/UILogon.aspx page. Instead, I get an error page with the following message:
"The report server is not responding. Verify that the report server is running and can be accessed from this computer."
Both ReportServer and Reports are on the same server, both have the same security on the folder and in IIS (6.0), both have Anonymous security access "checked".
If I revert to the old .config files (prior to my modifications for Form Authentication) and remove Anonymous from IIS for both sites, everything works fine (like it did after the installation).
Here are excerpts from the config files I've modified in ReportManager:
RSWebApplication.config:
<UI>
<CustomAuthenticationUI>
<loginUrl>/Pages/UILogon.aspx</loginUrl>
<UseSSL>False</UseSSL>
</CustomAuthenticationUI>
<ReportServerUrl>http://<servername>/ReportServer$SQLSERVER_2005</ReportServerUrl>
</UI>
rsmgrpolicy.config:
<CodeGroup
class="FirstMatchCodeGroup"
version="1"
PermissionSetName="FullTrust"
Description="This code group grants MyComputer code Execution permission. ">
<IMembershipCondition
class="ZoneMembershipCondition"
version="1"
Zone="MyComputer" />
Web.config:
<identity impersonate="false" />
Here is the content of the log ReportServerWebApp_*.log (see error in bold):

I€™m facing a SQL batch insert issue on Windows 64 bit (IA-64) platform. I€™m using €˜Column-Wise Binding€™ of parameters. The example program hosted on Microsoft site (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms709287.aspx) returns error of SQL_NEED_DATA for batch insert on Windows 64 bit platform. The same code works fine on 32 bit platform. I€™m using SQL Server 2000 as the database and tried using both native SQL server ODBC driver and Merant 5.2 ODBC drivers. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

I seem to be having a strange problem with accessing the SQL Express database under the following configuration.
Install Longhorn Server Beta 2
Add WSS role, setup default site, everything seems to be working fine (using NTLM auth for the site). Content database clearly working fine to the embedded SQL Server Express.
Want to switch to Forms Based Authentication with SQL Membership Provider. Follow insructions for it and discover the following issues accessing the database:
aspnet_regsql (running locally on same box) fails and says it can't connect to the database
try using the surface area configuration tools to enable remote access/ protocols etc.
aspnet_regsql still fails and says it can't connect to the database
Install the SQL Management Studio Express - try connecting it to the databse to explore the tables etc.
SQL Management Studio Express fails to connect to the database
Try switching client config to connect via shared memory rather than over TCP/IP etc.
Still fails to connect to database
Try install a third party tool called MSSQL Maestro (does some similar things to SQL Management Express)
Lo and behold - MSSQL Maestro connects to the database just fine, can explore the tables etc. No problems.
Try aspnet_regsql again, try SQL management express again after doing lots of things (try restarts etc. restarts of services). No luck.
So I'm confused. WSS seems to connect to the SQL Express config database fine. MSSQL Maestro connects to the database fine and will allow me to explore it. Using the exact same host and database name (the WSS configured default) aspnet_regsql and SQL Management Studio express both fail with the exact same error.
EDIT: Some significant additional details:
- I have two databases .MICROSOFT#SSEE (which is the WSS default internal database) and .SQLEXPRESS (installed when I installed the rest of SQL Express to get the management tools etc.)
- I can connect to them both by command line with sqlcmd -S.MICROSOFT#SSEE and sqlcmd -S.SQLEXPRESS just fine. They're both running.
- I CAN connect to.SQLEXPRESS from SQL Management Express Studio, but I cannot connect to .MICROSOFT#SSEE
- A look at the error log, shows a line like the following about listening on the named pipe for SQLEXPRESS database, but I don't see a similar entry for the MICROSOFT#SSEE (even thought it's configured to do so in configuration manager...)
"Server local connection provider is ready to accept connection on [ \.pipeSQLLocalSQLEXPRESS ]."
- I've run SQL Management Express as administrator - no change
- The error I get is either error 26, or error 40 when using Shared Memory protocol
- I get the same error and error code from aspnet_regsql
Any suggestions? I'm stumped...
