SQL Server Native UDT Serialization Format

Jul 4, 2007

I have created a UDT Point from an MSDN example. Its declaration is the following:

Code Snippet [Serializable]
[Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlUserDefinedType(Format.Native,
IsByteOrdered = true, ValidationMethodName = "ValidatePoint")]
public struct Point : INullable
{
private bool is_Null;
private Int32 _x;
private Int32 _y;
...

So it means that this class will be serialized in the native SQL Server format.
Is there any possibility to deserialize data retrieved from server as bytes to an object instance?
For example:

Code Snippet SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader();

while (rdr.Read())
{
// Retrieve the raw bytes into a byte array
byte[] buffer = new byte[32];
long byteCount = rdr.GetBytes(1, 0, buffer, 0, 32);
Point pt = new Point();
// Here I need to fill the created object with retrieved data
}

After I retrieved the data in bytes format, I need to write it to the object. How can I do this? In fact, I have no possibility to use SqlDataReader in the following manner:

Code Snippet // Retrieve the value of the UDT
Point pnt = (Point)rdr[1];
// Point pnt = (Point)rdr.GetSqlValue(1);
// Point pnt = (Point)rdr.GetValue(1);

because I retrieve data in bytes not from the server, but from an unmanaged application.
I have a possibility to create an instance of the class, but how can I fill this instance with data? Is it possible to do using native SQL Server native format? How can I do this when UDT uses user defined serialization?

Type TypePoint Is Marked For Native Serialization, But Field X Of Type TypePoint Is Not Valid For Native Serialization

It builds successfully every time.

Bulk Insert From Native Format Data File.

Dec 5, 2006

With "bcp MyDatabase.dbo.MyTable out C:MyFile.Dat -n -T" command line, I could get an exported data file. And I can also import this file  into MyTable using 'BULK INSERT MyDatabase.dbo.MyTable FROM 'C:MyFile.dat' WITH (DATAFILETYPE='native');' query statement.

Now, I want to make my own data file just like made by bcp above. Although I could make file of 'char' type, 'native' type file is needed for performance and other reasons. And the format file should not be used.

 Any one help?

Binary Serialization

Mar 9, 2007

Hello,I am trying to serialize (binary) a class and save it in a database. I followed a few examples I found in internet and this is what I came up with: 1 ' Rows
2 <Serializable()> _
3 Public Class Rows
4 Implements ISerializable
5
6 Private _Rows As New Generic.List(Of Row)
7 Public Property Rows() As Generic.List(Of Row)
8 Get
9 Return _Rows
10 End Get
11 Set(ByVal value As Generic.List(Of Row))
12 _Rows = value
13 End Set
14 End Property ' Rows
15
16 ' New
17 Public Sub New()
18 End Sub ' New
19
20 ' New
21 Public Sub New(ByVal siRows As SerializationInfo, ByVal scRows As StreamingContext)
22 End Sub ' New
23
24 ' GetObjectData
25 Public Sub GetObjectData(ByVal siRows As SerializationInfo, ByVal scRows As StreamingContext) Implements ISerializable.GetObjectData
26
27 siRows.AddValue("Rows", Me.Rows)
28
29 End Sub ' GetObjectData
30
31 Public Sub Serialize(ByVal filename As String)
32
33 Dim sRows As Stream = Stream.Null
34 Try
35 sRows = File.Open(filename, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.ReadWrite)
36 Dim bfRows As New BinaryFormatter
37 bfRows.Serialize(sRows, Me)
38 Finally
39 sRows.Close()
40 End Try
41
42 End Sub ' Serialize
43
44 Public Shared Function Deserialize(ByVal filename As String) As Rows
45
46 Dim sRows As Stream = Stream.Null
47 Try
48 sRows = File.Open(filename, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)
49 Dim bfRows As New BinaryFormatter
50 Return CType(bfRows.Deserialize(sRows), Rows)
51 Finally
52 sRows.Close()
53 End Try
54
55 End Function ' Deserialize
56
57 End Class ' Rows
 After serializing the class I need to save it in an a SQL 2005 database.But all the examples I followed use the filename ... Anyway, do I need to do something to save this into an SQL 2005 database or can I use it as follows? And how can I use this?This is the first time I do something like this so I am a little bit confused.Thanks,Miguel

Using Pre-Built Serialization Assemblies

Apr 12, 2007

I have followed the steps outlined in the knowledge base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913668 for effecting Xml Serialization within the SQL CLR. That is, I have

1. Prebuilt the serialization assembly X.Serializers for the types in assembly X and,

2. Registered both assemblies with SQL Server via the create assembly directive

Yet, when I attempt to create an XmlSerializer on the basis of one of the types defined in X, SQL CLR ignores the pre-built serialization assembly and attempts to dynamically create/load the assembly. Since dynamic loading is disallowed, this fails with the expected exception:

Using Message Queue Task And Serialization

Mar 7, 2007

I have a C# application that get data (i.e. select Firstname, LastName from person) to form a DataSet object (i.e. PersonName variable inside my code). Then I want to post this DataSet object into a local private queue (the path is: .privatemyTestQ). Note that I carefully labled the message to be "Variables Message" (as needed per anothre thread discussion here in this forum).

I created a receiving package, in which I want to use SSIS's Message Queue task to retreive the above DataSet object (from C# application). I got failure:

[Message Queue Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Root element is missing.".

However, As a comparison research, I created another SSIS sending-package. And I used ADO.NET provider to get the same data to store the sull result set in a package-level variable. Then I use Message Queue task to post this variable (i.e. object) to the same private queue above. Then I run my above receiving package. I was successful to read back the messge that I posted from SSIS sending package. (Please note that if I use OLEDB provider for sending package to get data from database, the MSMQ task for sending failed due to serializtion issue for __ComObject. With ADO.NET provider, the result set is represented as a type of DataSet).

I then curiously looked into message body from Computer Management Counsol. I found that message sent from SSIS is in SOAP format while message from my C# application is NOT in SOAP (but only in XML format). Obviously SSIS MSMQ task serialize objects into SOAP format.

Can anyone here please help on how to serialize my DataSet object from my C# app) in compliance with the MSMQ task's spec so that I can read message from Q using SSIS package.

I use Visual Studio 2005 and MSMQ 3.0 version.

Your help is appreciated.

Cannot Load Dynamically Generated Serialization Assembly SQLCLR

Apr 10, 2008

In article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913668 it says to generate a serialization assembly and pop this into the database along side the assembly with the serialized type. All well and good, but how doe the XmlSerializer know to look in the database for the assembly - does it use the name of the assembly + XmlSerializer?

It is certainly ambiguous in the aforementioned kb article. In one place it generates an assembly in the database called

CREATE ASSEMBLY [MyTest.XmlSerializers] from
'C:CLRTestMyTestMyTestinDebugMyTest.XmlSerializers.dll'
WITH permission_set = SAFE

and in another it uses

USE dbTest
GO
CREATE ASSEMBLY [MyTest] from 'C:CLRTestMyTest.dll'
GO
CREATE ASSEMBLY [MyTest.XmlSerializers.dll] from 'C:CLRTestMyTest.XmlSerializers.dll'
GO

I can't get either to work, and I've tried various combinations, this and the fact that the kb artice uses two different naming conventions suggests to me that there must be "something else" which links the assembly with the serialization assembly.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dan

Cannot Install SQL Server Express On Vista Ultimate - Cannot Find MS SQL Server Native Client

Apr 5, 2007

I am trying to install SQL Server Express - (the non ADV version) and get the following error.

"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli_x64.msi'".

I have 64 bit Vista Ultimate running on an HP dv9000.

I am using the download from the bottom of the download page for SSX where it says 64 bit version.

Prior to this I got the. "64-bit ASP.net is registered. Required 32-bit ASP.NET to install Microsoft Reporting services 2005(32-bit)." messagd during the pre-install scan. From what I gather in the posts, the reporting issue is different from my installation package problem.

I have been trying to prove a point to friends about how far you can go with SSX but am having no luck installing it. This whole process took 1 hour in XP but I've been stymied for 2 days.

I would appreciate being pointed at the right downloads for what seems to be a simple install.

Linked Server Using SQL Native Client

May 28, 2007

We have a SQL 2005 SP2 64 bit server that needs to communicate with our 32 bit AS400 server. We have stored procedures in databases that query the AS400 (generally just select statements). I am not understanding the procedure to connect to the AS400 now that the OLE DB for ODBC provider no longer exists.

I know how to create a system DSN (and that it will be located in C:WINDOWSSysWOW64odbcad32.exe). I called the System DSN 'ConnectMe'. The server I am trying to access is 'ServerA'. I have filled out the following to create a linked server:
Linked Server: AS400
Provider: SQL Native Client
Product Name: AS400 (from what I understand, this holds no value and only serves as a description)
Data source: ServerA
Provider String: dsn::=ConnectMe (same as system DSN)
Catalog:<I left it blank>
Under the security tab I have the remote username and password that should be used.

When I try to create the linked server, I get the error:
"OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "AS400" returned message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. ..may be be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections"

Remote connections for both TCP/IP and named pipes is enabled and SQL services have restarted to enable that. What am I missing?

Multiple SQL Server Native Client Versions

Nov 24, 2006

One of the big problems with the old MDAC was different versions on different client machines. You would test your app with the latest version say, but when you deployed it, it might fail as the client has a different version.

My company develops software for Municipal Government clients. These clients use other SQL Server applications as well as ours, but they can only use one version of the client software (MDAC) on a given desktop. That means if we require a particular MDAC version, but the clients other applications from other vendors don't officially support that MDAC version, the client is in a real jam.

Our software also supports Oracle, which allows our software to specify a particular Oracle Home which points to a directory with a particular version of the Oracle client dlls (along with corresponding registry entries for that Oracle Home), such that we control the exact client version of the Oracle software that the client uses with our applications. This will not interfere with, and is completely seperate, from the default Oracle home installed when you install the Oracle client software.

What I would like to see for the Native Client is the ability to have our applications use the version of the Native Client that we wish to support and deploy without interfering with the Native Client version used by other applications. Have a default Native Client, but allow applications to somehow specify a different Native Client version/set of DLLs.

Is there any such functionality with the Native Client? (I didn't see any mention of such in the documentation, but I thought I'd ask)

If not, are there any future plans to support multiple Native Client versions on the same desktop?

?? SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 Install Fails On Native Client ??

Jun 11, 2007

Hello all,

I'm trying to install "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2" on a newly installed XP Pro SP2 machine. I downloaded "SQLEXPR32.EXE" (38,220,656 bytes) from the Microsoft site.

At the beginning of the setup the installation program scans my system -- no problems or warnings. Everything looks fine and ready to go.

During installation I uncheck, "Hide advanced configuration options" simply because I want to change the default instance name. Aside from changing the default instance name I make no other changes to the default installation configuration.

The installation begins but when it tries to comes to the "SQL Native Client" portion of the installation I get the following error dialog message:

"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'."

Below I've included the setup log file of the SQL Native Client portion of the setup. I've looked through the log file but didn't see anything obviously wrong until the error occurs toward the end.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this to happen? I've install SSE many times in the past with no problems.

Thanks

Installing SQL Server Native Client Requires Administrator Rights

Jun 26, 2007

Hi All,
We're deploying an app. using a MSSQL Server 2005 (Std. Ed.).
In order to install an ODBC driver for the DB, we've made the installation of Sqlncli.msi part of the package.
It will not run - unless user has Admin priv.s on the klient PC targeted.
Does any one have any experience w. other ways of installing the sql native client (like MDAC) - og just an idea about circumventing the Admin rights problem?

Regards

RDA Pull From Windows Server 2003 Gives Native Error 28035

Mar 28, 2006

I currently have a Vs.Net 2003 Pocket PC application that uses sql server ce 2.0 to push and pull data from Sql Server 2000 to the Pocket PC. The sscesa20.dll isapi agent is installed on a Windows 2000 server and points to another server that hosts the SQL database. In this configuration everything works like a charm. I am in the process of upgrading my application server to Windows 2003 Server but the RDA PULL process does not work, giving an Native Error of 28035 EVERY time. I use the exact same code in the app but when I point to the isapi agent on the 2003 box it does not work. When I connect to the the sscesa20.dll via the Pocket IE it returns the "Sql Server CE Server Agent" message. When I do an RDA.Submit it works and the SQL table is updated as expected.

I have configured IIS 6 with the proper web extensions
I have turned off the firewall and antivirus on the server.
I have reinstalled the server agent several times.
I set up the sscesa20.dll manually.
I removed all file level security.
I opened up the virtual directory.
I verified the ddl versions match.

I'm dead in the water right now. I'm not sure what else to try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Connect SQL Server 2005 With ODBC Drive “SQL Native Client

Sep 13, 2007

Hi,

When I'm using SQL server 2005, and ODBC drive €œSQL Native Client€? I get an error when executing the below given code. Error Message: €œTransaction cannot start because more than one ODBC connection is in use.€?

But this works well with SQL Server 2000 with ODBC drive "SQL Native Client" and in SQL server 2005 also when I used ODBC drive €œSQL Server€?.

I used aTrgConn.Execute(€œBegin Transaction€?) and it's working properly. But unfortunately I cannot use this method, because I want to run the same code with Oracle ODBC as well.
Is this a known issue in SQL Native client drive with SQL server 2005? Do you know a solution for this?

Please Help..............

Thanks in advance.

Code:

Dim aTrgConn As New ADODB.connection
Dim aCmdIns As New ADODB.Command
Dim aCmdUpd As New ADODB.Command

aTrgConn.Open sConnStr

Set aCmdIns.ActiveConnection = aTrgConn
Set aCmdUpd.ActiveConnection = aTrgConn

aTrgConn.BeginTrans

Hello,I'm trying to install the SQL Server 2005 Standard edition and while I can easily install the first part of the package, the

Server components, tools, Books Online, and samples, when I click
to install the Run the SQL Native Client Installation Wizard  it tells me this:This Microsoft sql server native client package is not supported on the current processor type
I have Windows XP64bit with IIS running on 32bit now.  Why does it do that and how I can get around it  ? :) Thanks.

I have downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition ISO from the following site and burned it onto a DVD.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6931FA7F-C094-49A2-A050-2D07993566EC&displaylang=en

Prior to this I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edtion. During setup I have selected all the native client components i.e. Management Studio, Business Intelligense Studio. But after the install I am not able to see them under All Programs-> Microsoft SQL Server 2005. On further searching I have come across this link

http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=142941

First of all, there is no sqlrun_tools.msi under setup folder of the dvd. And also when I tried to change component from Add/Remove programs and following the instructions as specified on clicking Change Installed components all that I see are: Connectivity Components and Software Development kit.

Could someone tell me how can I install Management Studio/ Business Intelligence Studio seperately? I don't want to go through the process of re-installation.

Inserting Image Data Fails With Connection Broken (SQL Server 2000 And SQL Native Client)

May 28, 2008

Dear all,

we have tables with many image columns. We fill these image columns via ODBC and SQLPutData as described in MSDN etc (using SQL_LEN_DATA_AT_EXEC(...), calling SQLParamData and sending the data in chunks of 4096 bytes when receiving SQL_NEED_DATA).

The SQLPutData call fails under the following conditions with sqlstate 08S01

- The database resides on SQL Server 2000
- The driver is SQL Native Client
- The table consists e.g. of one Identity column (key column) and nine image columns
- The data to be inserted are nine blocks of data with the following byte size:

1: 6781262
2: 119454

3: 269
4: 7611

5: 120054

6: 269

7: 8172

8: 120054

9: 269
The content of the data does not matter, (it happens also if only zero bytes are written), nor does the data origin (file or memory).

All data blocks including no 7 are inserted. If the first chunk of data block 8 should be written with SQLPutData the function fails and the connection is broken. There are errors such as "broken pipe" or "I/O error" depending on the used network protocol.

If data no 7 consists of 8173 bytes instead of 8172 all works again.
(Changing the 4096 chunk size length does not help)

Has anybody encountered this or a similar phenomenon?

Thank you

Eartha

Error 15002 Executing Sp_setapprole Statement Using The SQL Native Client Connected To SQL Server 2005

Oct 16, 2007

Does anyone know if this is a SQL Native Client bug? I've read a previous thread (posted back on Jan. 18th, 2007) about this error, but there are no replies. I am getting this error when I issue the sp_setapprole command using sqlexecdirect() ODBC api call. Is there any way to work around this? Or is there a fix to the SQL Native Client? The error 15002 message text states "The procedure sys.sp_setapprole cannot be executed within a transaction". This is on a new connection so there should be no transactions active at the time. Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide on this.

Native Oracle SQL -&&> SQL Server 2005 CE .sdf File -&&> Using Visual Studio 2005?

May 23, 2007

I've got a table adapter that connects using an oracle data connector. In the adapter, I'm using native oracle SQL such as:

select TO_DATE(SUBSTR(TO_CHAR(weird_oracle_field),0,12),'YYYYMMDDHH24MI') as dt_added from oracle_data_table

There's also a CASE statement in there with some other data transformations.

Anyway, I want to take the results of that Oracle query and put the dataset into a SQL Server Compact Edition database - within an application that I'm creating in Visual Studio 2005.

For whatever reason, I can't seem to do anything like that in 'bulk' and there aren't any data migration tools that work with anything other than "full" SQL Server versions. My client doesn't support SQL Server, but I can deploy my app with SQL CE. I need a 'local' copy of the database (for several reasons) and just can't seem to figure out how to make this work.

I'm really going nuts. I feel like I'm soooo close when I see the data I want in the table adapter - but I can't seem to actually *move* the data over!!

Can anyone help?

thanks,

Jon
