SQL Server Replication Push Subscription Issues

Jun 21, 2007

Hi There,

I wonder if anyone has run into this problem before.

I have inherited a SQL Server 2000 box with what appears to be a push subscription set up on it. However, the original Subscription database has long since been removed, leaving that box with what is essentially an orphaned push subscription.

We are trying to remove the subscription, but do not understand how. All documentation I have found keeps insisting that this be done at the subscriber database (which is for all effective purposes, destroyed).

How do I get rid of it?

Any ideas would be dearly appreciated.

Thanks.

Reinitializing Push Subscription After It Expired In Transactional Replication

I am using SQL 2000. How can I get my transactional replication reinitialized after it has failed with several attempts.

I know one way of doing it through enterprise manager and specifying the subscription to reinitialize. But this will apply the snapshot and will take long time.

Is there a fast way of doing it?

Cannot Remove Push Subscription On SQL Server 2000

Nov 29, 2006

Hi,

We have created replication from one production server to another backup server by using SQL scripts. These scripts have been generated by SQL Server after manual initial setup. When I ran these scripts they did not add the subscription for the backup server because a stored procedure were missing named something like sp_addsubscription. Therefore I ran the script on the production server and created the subscription manually on the backup server. But I made an error, I created a push subscription first but I should have created a pull subscription. Now I can't delete the push subscription. I don't even get a error message. I can't press delete and when right clicking on it I can only choose Help. The subscription has the following properties:

Type: push
Status: retrying
Last action: The process could not connect to distributor 'PSERV'
Replication type: Snapshot

Anyone know how I can delete this push subscription on my backup server?

Best,
/M

Push And Pull Subscription?

Sep 20, 2005

As I understand replication in Sql2K the only difference in push or pull subscriptions is where the agent runs. If I wanted changes in the publisher to be sent to the subscribers immediately after the change then I thought push would be better. But, if I am equally interested in changes made at the subscriber then what should I use? Or does the agent monitor both the publisher and subscriber at the same time?

Drop Push Subscription Without Publisher

There is a push subscription to an immediate-updating transactional publication with a queued failover. The publisher was also the distributor.

The publisher melted down and has been removed from service. The subscriber continues to queue up transactions for the now nonexistent publisher.

How do you remove the push subscription directly from the subscribing machine?

Push And Pull Subscription From Publisher/Distributor?

May 30, 2001

Hi All,

Can push and pull subscriptions be configured on the publisher/distributer server?

We have server A running SQL Server 2000 configured as Publisher/Distributor and also a Push subscription (transactional replication) to Server B configured as Subscriber.

The idea was to have Server B as backup server if Server A goes down. Users will continue to update data in server B till server A is up.

Once server A is up, I want to synchronise the up-to-minuit date from Server B to Server A in the form of Transactional replication configured as "Pull Subscription" from Server A.

Is that possible?

Thanks

Merge Replication (Push) Over Internet

Sep 19, 2007

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could suggest a solution to my problem:

I have an in-house production database. I wanted to use Merge replication (push) to mirror parts of this data to our Internet server on the web which has a Public IP.

Steps I followed

1. Created an entry in €œC:WINNTsystem32driversetchosts€? file with IP
address of the Subscriber and just the €œServername€? of the Subscriber on
publisher machine (local server)

2. Created an Alias to the Subscriber

3. Connected to the remote server thru Mgt Studio

4. Created Merge Replication on the Local Database

5. Created Subscription to the remote server.

6. Started the Replication Agent

I receive following msg "The process could not connect to Subscriber 'ISVR'.

When I check the View Synchronization Status in Mgt studio it shows "The server 'ISVR' is not a Subscriber"

I presume that if we have a Public IP at our end, then the Merge Replication will be thru.

Is it possible to replicate without having a Public IP?

Any suggestions,

Thanks.

Push Replication To Multihomed Client Fails

Sep 11, 2007

Hi
We're having problems with push replication to multihomed clients. if the DNS contains multiple IP's and one of those are not reachable from the sql server. the replication fails. no matter order of IP adresses. i wrote a DNS proxy which re-ordered the IP's so that the "working" IP would come first in the list but no success until i filtered out so that the DNS proxy only replied with one, the working, IP.

the replication is part of a commercial application which we have no control over. are there any settings on the server side that can help here? I really want to fix the source of the problem and not patch it with a proxy.

any ideas are welcome. the server is sql 2005 standard and the clients are running 2005 express

Merge Replication Push Using IP Address Fails? WTF?

Jun 7, 2007

I have a Merge publication that has multiple subscribers. They are all SQL Express, so it's all Push Subscriptions.

When I try to add a subscriber by it's IP address, the snapshot gets delivered. Schema created, data loaded, but I see the following error in Replication Monitor:

The merge process was unable to deliver the snapshot to the Subscriber. If using Web synchronization, the merge process may have been unable to create or write to the message file. When troubleshooting, restart the synchronization with verbose history logging and specify an output file to which to write. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147201001)

When I change the IP address in the script to the name of the machine it works perfectly. The ONLY thing I changed in the script was the IP address to the name.

The reason for this is that I have several client machines that will have connectivity, but NO name resolution back at the Server.

Please, Please, Please help!

Complex Push/Pull Merge Replication Question...

Mar 8, 2007

Hiya,

Our current application which uses SQL 2000/CE uses a single Merge publication to populate numerous "read only" tables on the mobile device, and create the schema for a "transactions" table, which will be filled by the mobile device during work, then merged at sync.

Now, the master "transactions" table at the publisher has millions of rows, and the mobile device does not need any of them... so currently we have it "filtering" by a always false clause, so that none of the data is pushed to the client.

The problem with this is that we cannot archive any of the records in the transaction table, as doing so (say, removing 200k rows) would result in the mobile devices (of which there are about 15,000 active in the field) to attempt to reconcile each of those 200k rows when it is next synced, which takes way too long.

Now, what we would like to do is upgrade to SQL 2005/CE 2005, if the new features will allow us a PULL ONLY table in some way? I cannot find how to do this via the wizard, but am sure I am missing something. At least I hope so.

Can anyone give a suggestion?

Thanks!

Replication - Subscription Inactive, Why ?

Any idea what caused this ..... Everything was fine for a week or so.

Does anyone know of any good books or publications on Replication ? I've got some DBA books that cover the basics, but I'd like something that helps explain the oddball situations.

Replication Question - Updatable Subscription?

Apr 11, 2006

Hi all,

I am planning replication around a large SQL Database Server; 3 databases need to be replicated for reporting purposes.

My plan was to use Transaction Replication, as the Reporting database will be mostly read-only. However, we must add a whole bunch of additional, historical data to some of the tables of the reporting database that does not exist in the Publisher. I understand that changes can be made to subscriptions in Transaction Replication scenarios, ideally when the changes are few and far between. (Merge replication is excessive for our purposes.)

I don't want the additional historical data to be propagated back to the publisher. Is it possible that data is written to a subscriber in a Transactional Replication scenario without writing these updates to the Publisher? Given the nature of the data, there will not be conflicts between the historical data and the new changes applied from the publisher.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Faraz

Merge Replication Subscription Doubles In Size

Jan 29, 2008

I made a DDL change to a published table. To do this, I had to remove the table from the article, modify two field sizes, save the table, and then add the table back to the publication. I did have to rerun the snapshot agent after this even though the new article is exactly the same (yes, I understand all rowguids are dropped and recreated).

So, at the subscription, I begin synchronization and it replicates every article, thus doubling the size of the subscription .sdf file. yes, it can be compacted and it cuts it back in half.

Question is how to prevent this behavior? Is it possible to create the rowguid before publishing the table/article and that way even if you go back and make a schema change that requires republishing you can avoid the nasty behavior of producing a new snapshot and and a doubling of subscription database size?

This particular merge publication is read-only. Every article is marked as 'download only.'

Ideally if schema change is needed to one table, I only want that table/article to require reinitialization.
Actually, if its a simple change like expanding a varchar by some chars I'd like to not have to republish the article at all.
keep dreaming?

Trigger In The Subscription Database - Transactional Replication...

Feb 2, 2007

Hi,

We are Using Transactional Replication with Updatable Subscription in SQL Server 2005 SP1.

Subscription Type : Pull Subscription

Mode : Continuous Running Mode

Conflict Resolution Policy : Publisher Wins.

I have a table "Sample" (which is part of replication) and it has got 3 triggers. All the triggers are set NOT FOR REPLICATION.

The first trigger Updates a column of the "Sample" table in which i inserted a record.
The second trigger inserts record in to another database table and also updates a column of the table "Sample".
The third trigger does not affect any tables, it is written for some manipulations with variables.

In this scenario when I insert a record in the Sample table of the subscription database, that record is visible in the table. But during replication, it shows conflict in the Conflict Viewer and removes the record from the Sample table of the subscription database. The record is not replicated to the publisher and the other Subscriber also.

But when I comment any one update in either the first or second trigger, the insert works fine without any conflict.

Is there any issue with firing two triggers in replication which is updating the same table? I also suspect the Order of Commands moving to the Publisher from the MSReplication_Queue table, becoz the conflict viewer shows the subscriber as the Conflict loser.
Is there any issue with msrepl_tran_version, Since the conflict is decided based on this id??

It would be helpful if u could reply soon.

Thanks and Regards,

Replication: Remove Merge Subscription Without Existing Publisher?

Feb 26, 2004

Hi all,
I'm a rather newbie, not only to this forum but also to sql server having a question to the following issue:
Is it possible to drop/remove/delete the "orphan" of a merge subscription on one instance of sql server without having the (former) distributor/publisher (on other instance) available?
The background is: I had a small replication infrastructure with two instances (on two machines), one the publisher and distributor, the other the subscriber. Now it happened that the publisher/distributor machine was completely set up new without having the replication dropped in advance, what remained on the subscriber is now a database with all the merge/replication tables and the guid columns in the user tables.
Moreover this, an entry remained in the subscription saying that a subscription with the former publisher exists...

Can I remove these "orphans" without having to setup the instance again?

Thank you,
Andy

SQL 2012 :: Initializing Subscription With Web Synchronization (merge Replication)

May 9, 2015

I'm trying out a set up as following:

SQL Server 2008 standard as the publisher
SQL Server 2012 express as the subscriber

and I tend to use web synchronization; there is no domain trust.

After following the instructions at MSDN for configuring web synchronization, I have an error that I can't get past - after creating the initial snapshot on the publisher, I try to run replmerg.exe at the subscriber and I always get this error:

"The subscription to publication 'TestReplication' has expired or does not exist."

If I refresh the publisher's "Local Publications" and look within the "TestReplication", it does show that the subscriber is a known subscriber. Likewise, if I refresh subscriber's "Local Subscription", it has an entry for TestReplication publication.

I already verified that the user used by Replisapi.dll has the read permission to the snapshot folder, is a member of PAL, is db_owner of the publishing database and distribution database. I am using self-signed certificate for this test and I have already installed the certificate at the subscriber machine so that HTTPS is trusted. I can run diagnosis from subscriber so I know subscriber can reach and logs are being left at the publisher's IIS.
