I've gotten a request to tune some sql for a report. The actual SQL is pretty long so I won't bother posting it, but I was hoping that someone had a good website or ebook on advanced techniques for tuning sql in SQL Server.

Hi, I am new to database admin. Actually, I really have no experience what so ever. My boss has asked me to do some tests on our sql server to find bottlenecks or whatever is causing our server to respond so slowly.
Any help would be, ugh helpful.
I am loking for tools or information that will help troubleshoot any problems with the ms sql server 2k. I have tried sql profiler, but I found myself lost, not knowing what to look for.
I just upgraded my sql2000 server (3gb Ram,2 x2.4ghz p4xeon processors) to sql2005 64 bit (4gb ram,1 x dual core 2.0 xeon processor) The single processor is supposed to be faster than the previous dual processors combined.
The problem is now I am having major performance problems, the queries are lagging pretty badly intermittently.
What steps should I take to resolve this? I am planning on upgrading to 8gb of RAM tonight or tommorow as a 'throwing hardware at this problem without really knowing what I'm doing approach.'
I am not very good with perfmon, but if you want any stats from there please let me know. I'm googling now what I should be checking for.
I can't figure out why its actually running worse, these problems got worse after I set a maintenance plan to run last night which did backups, reindex all the stuff etc... It failed after 2 hours and I woke up to horrible performance this morning.
Does anyone have some more detailed information about how Oracle and MSimplement / allow Tuning on Oracle 10g and SQL Server 2005 and thedifferences between them?Which of them, In a deep comparison about it, allow better tuning andwhy.Regards,Marcio Evangelista
I am looking for an useful sql server 2005 performance tuning book. i have been searching for a real nice book as i m going to start my job from next month in a financial domain with one of the requirement as sql server 2005 performance tuning.so i m looking forward a book which can help me doing well at my workplace. Any suggestions and links appreciated in advance .
I am looking to improve the performance of my sql server databases.
I currently have a dual location system, the database server setup is basically a quad xeon with 4gb at my office and a double xeon with 4gb at a remote webhosting location. There are separate application/web/intranet servers at each site. The two databases servers are replicated with the local server publishing to the remote server.
The relational database holds circa 26 million records, growing by a volume of 10,000 per day, there are approximately 50,000 queries performed per day.
My theory is that the replication of the two databases is causing a slowdown; despite fast network connections (averaging 200ms between servers) the replication seems to place a large load on the local server. Would it be sensible to replicate to a second local server and then replicate to the remote server, placing any burden on the second server?
I am planning to upgrade the local server to a high capacity 4+ cpu 64bit server, my problem is that although I have noticed a slow down in performance over time, I am unsure how to go about measuring and quantifying this in order to diagnose the bottlenecks and ensure that investing in a new server would be worthwhile. Where would one be best advised to start this project?
I am new to SQL Server 2000. I am eager to learn what factors/parameters are key for obtaining good retrieval performance of SQL Server 2000 (prompt response to user query).
I recall that someone told me that a recordset with asOpenStatic cursor type has higher speed than that of a recordset with other cursor types.
Is this true or false. Are there really some key parameters for perfomance tuning .
Hello, we currently have our database (MSSQL 2005) on our web server however to do increased traffic and business we are now moving our database to its own server. I was wondering if anyone here knew of some good ways to setup/tune Windows Server 2003 and SQL 2005 for best performance. MSSQL will be the only application running on the server and want to make sure it is as fast as possible! Thanks in advance!!!
I am doing performance tuning of SP/Query in Dev-Test environment.
I found that SQL Server caches plan between successive executions.
So if I test/execute SP 10 times, after 1st or 2nd execution, SQL server will pull-up plan-info from CACHE...Not from SQL SERVER Or Database...
Means i am not getting correct answer...
I found this 2 commands:
DBCC FREEPROCCACHE
DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS
But they say that executing above command might interfere/bother other people executing other query/sp on this server.
They also say that: Freeing the plan cache causes, for example, a stored procedure to be recompiled instead of reused from the cache. This can cause a sudden, temporary decrease in query performance.
Part of query was using Dynamic-SQL executed with EXEC command.
I replaced that with SP_EXECUTESQL.
How can I start testing of each SP-run with Fresh/Blank CACHE ?
Hi My project is in .NET 2003 i.e. framework 1.1 and database in SQLServer 2000. But the reports have been developed using SQLServer 2005 Reporting Services. Now when I am trying to deploy them through deployment project of .NET its giving me following error:"Using other editions of SQL Server for report data sources and/or the report server database" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. Now I am really confused with this. Can any one please guide me regarding this ASAP. Thanks, Falguni
I got through the installation hoops for SQLEXPRESS Reporting Services in Vista and set up the default configurations in Report Services Configuration. I can explore the default directory for "Reports" in IIS7, but I can't browse in IE. I get the "The report server is not responding. verify that the report server..." message in the browser. This is after I migrated the app per the initial http 500 error using the preferred method - %systemroot%system32inetservAPPCMD.exe migrate config "Default Web Site/Reports".
I'm running Vista Ultimate, VS2005, SQLEXPRESS SP2. I've tried running IE as admin and also I've disabled UAC from gpedit.msc - ...Windows SettingsSecurity SettingsLocal PolicySecurity Options and unchecking UAC.
I'm very new new at this. I'm try to deploy a report model and got this message. I have no idea what its going on about.
Can anyone help me?
Aku

every 1 hour my server's computer is restarting ! when the windows finish restarting i open the Event viewer and see that what coused it is the error :
"Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database." Event 107 source : "Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER)"
When I trying to configure Reposrting services in IIS & XP. It hsows me error "The report server is not responding. Verify that the report server is running and can be accessed from this computer."
I also configure with reposrting configuration tools which show all confuguration is perfect.
but when I try to open through IE http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx
or http://localhost/Reportserver
It shows error. I try all ways still not works ..Help me out
I would like to know if it is possible to have different applications on separate report servers sharing one report server database. If so are there possible issues or ptfalls to this type of architecture?
Recently, several of our users have started to experience issues with hyperlinks in a report. I have created a textbox added navigation and selected the report to 'jump to' and the users are getting this error:
The specified server url does not link to the report server for this report manager or is not in the correct format
I have changed this to a an url but the error persists - there is nothing on google or MSDN that i can find which relates to this error so im kinda stuck with this one! The error is not affecting all users, just a small subset of them. Each of the users has different AD rights with one of them being a Domain Admin so i dont think it is a security issue.
*obviously the <SERVERNAME> and <REPORTNAME> are not real server or report names - im just being cautious by not including this detail on a forum post.
Report manager is installed on several machines as part of a webfarm but this has not caused any problems in the past (i have over 200 reports under my belt thus far)
I went to my comp ->rt cick->manage-IIS->default website->rt click->properties->directory security->annoymouse access€¦EDIT->under Default domain it was blank, and i added a domain there.
And i was getting error opening up the reports from localhost.
I changed everything to same as it was previosly, and I am getting the error:
The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. (rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable) (rsRPCError) Get Online Help
Cannot open database "ReportServer$SQLExpress" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'NGESComputer name$'.
I have a view which joins 3 tables. One has 15 million rows the next another 5 million and the third 500k. When I join them the execution plan tells me that 15 million rows were retrieved from the first (taking about 5 mins) 1.5 million from the 2nd taking 3 mins and 4.5 million from the third taking almost no time.
The first two ause a clustered index, one being a seek the other a scan and the third a regular index seek. All followed by a hash match/inner join which takes 2 mins.
Any ideas on optimizing the SQL?
Here is the syntax: SELECT b.packno, b.COMM_DATE, a.ben_grp_cr, a.ben_dsc_cr, c.gst_inc, SUM(a.credit) FROM TABC c INNER JOIN TABB B ON b.PACKNO = c.PACKNO AND b.COMM_DATE = BENDTL.COMM_DATE AND b.BEN_NUM = c.BEN_NUM INNER JOIN TABA a ON b.tran_id = a.tran_id WHERE b.tran_date > '20040401' AND c.gst_inc = 0 GROUP BY b.packno, b.COMM_DATE, a.ben_grp_cr, a.ben_dsc_cr, c.bendtl.gst_inc
I tried on finding out the problem in a slow running sp with profiler. I found that there are some waiting resource 'tracewrite' and 'async_network_io'. Any idea on it? Thanks in advance
I need to find a way to make this query run faster. Please let me know if you can help. Here are some of the issues.
1) I have a database with one table, and No indexes can be put in place.
2) This is a very large database. (4,000,000) records, and growing daily.
3) the following query returns 720,000 records.
4) The query takes about 18 minutes to complete.
I understand that by doing a table scan, the way this has to run is difficult, but is there anything I can do?
The Problem: When I run this query, I also run performance monitor, I have found that my page file is at 100%. I have 1 Gig of Ram on the server with 2 P III Xeion Processors. I don't know what other information I can give, but please let me know.
I want to use the Index tuning wizard on some of my tables. Is it OK if I use when people are on the server or to do it during off-pick period. Thanks!!!
I am interested in finding out if anyone out there has experience with extremely high-performance SQL Server applications. The I/O needs of my database server are growing very quickly, and I am on the verge of launching a major upgrade project.
We have done all the standard tuning tasks: proper indexing, stored procedure tuning, etc... and are running on good small-server scale hardware ( dual PIII 700s, 1G RAM, but no RAID). The only path I can see to achieving higher performance are:
- lots of RAID, perhaps on a SAN. - server upgrade, maybe 4 proc? I've been looking at RAIDZONEs and Netfinity's - data partitioning ( I REALLY want to avoid this if I can! )
What do you do when you need Major Enterprise scale database performance from SQL Server? I've found lots of resources for Oracle and DB2, but I can't find many case studies for serious SQL Server installations.
Hi, does the upgradition SQL Server 6.5 to 7.0 will simply solve some problems which we are facing currently like ODBC errors Insert failed and update failed and also supporting more users ? We have Access front end to SQL Server backend, so do we need to touch code in front end for optimizations ?
Other than the SQL Server 7.0 Index Tuner wizard (which isn't suggesting anything). Is there a 3rd party Index Tuner piece of software out there? Or is there something special that needs ot be done to get the SQL Index Tuner to work?
Good Morning Everybody, I had a single table consists of one million records. To retrive data from that table it takes lot of time. how i can reduce execution time? what is the procedures to tune the database. i implemented cluster index on primary key of that table. still i can't able to reduce execution time. can anybody help me in this issue?
