I do a clean install of SQL Server + RS + SP1 with standard setup on Windows Server 2003. I create a simple report (select * from aTable). This report (actually any report) shows the error message "For security reasons DTD is prohibited in this XML document. To enable DTD processing set the ProhibitDtd property on XmlReaderSettings to false and pass the settings into XmlReader.Create method."
This has to do with security settings in Windows Server 2003. On Windows XP everything works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: The reports do work in the preview tab in BIDS.

I’m having problems with security for reporting services when using Windows Integrated Security as the connection type for the data source.
Here is the setup: The reporting service is on a virtual machine called cws-devtest. The database used
by the reporting service is on a server called sql2005, and that database is Enterprise Edition.
There is a cube from which the report retrieves data on a server called sql2005-dev, that is sql server 2005 Developer Edition.
I have created roles on sql2005-dev, and have assigned users and groups to those roles
to achieve the security that I want. I have tested those roles using the cube browser, and using Excel 2007
and that looks very good.
I created a simple ssrs report to test security in that area, and am having trouble simply
viewing any data, logged in as myself, using Windows Integrated Security.
Here is the error from the browser:
•An error has occurred during report processing.
oCannot create a connection to data source 'trade_dw_cube'.
#61607;The connection either timed out or was lost.
#61607;Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
#61607;An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
If I use “Credentials stored securely in the report server in the browser for the data source,
and enter my Windows username and password, and check the “Use as Windows credentials when connecting to the data source
checkbox, I can view the report, but that does not use the roles that I had already created. I prefer to use Windows Integrated Security.
Has anyone been able to use Windows Integrated Security with SSRS?

We have 2005 Reporting Services fully functional - Dev, QA and prod (farm). I have at least 5 distinct business group trees in my structure, who have inherited or modified security based upon NT Users and AD groups. Now, we want to replace a major group (<domain_name>Domain Users) with a controlled group.
I cannot find anyway to report or map the folders that a specific NT User and AD group has rights. Cannot it be done?

Hi
I have built an ASP.NET 2.0 application which is accessed both internally and externally. I have forms authentication implemented using an AspNetSqlMembershipProvider, also AspNetSqlRoleProvider and AspNetSqlProfileProvider have been implemented, all data is stored in the SQL 2005 database for the application.
I have been asked to start using SQL 2005 Reporting Services to create some complex financial reporting for the application.
My question is quite straight forward, can I use the security that is implemented in the application to grant and/or deny access to reports for this application in Reporting Services?
If so, please could you provide pointers to the information I'd need to implement this, hopefully in a 'Reporting Services Security for Dummies' style would be good.
Many thanks,
Lee

Hopefully, someone has figured this out:
I've implemented and tested cell level security on the cube. It's testing certain level conditions, and returns #N/A (as normal) when the user is not supposed to see the cell value. Since I always use .FormattedValue in my reports, works fine in Report Services (and Excel and ProClarity, etc.)
Here's the problem:
When RS parameters encounter this situation, the parameter dataset "breaks" (The following system error occurred: Type mismatch.) This is happening, because the parameter fields (ParameterValue, ParameterCaption, ParameterLevel) are being replaced by #N/A, due to the cell level security. This is happening, because these are actually defined as members, and hence passing through cell level security.
What I need to do is find a way to have these specific members bypass the cell level security, so that the parameter datasets still work. (Failing that, a new way of specifying parameters in MSRS.)
I've tried the following a a cell level security rule, but it doesn't seem to work:
[Measures].CurrentMember is [Measures].[ParameterValue] or [Measures].CurrentMember is [Measures].[ParameterCaption] or
[Measures].CurrentMember is [Measures].[ParameterLevel] or
[Measures].[Is Visible]
Any ideas?

I'm working on a project that requires integration of SQL Server Reporting Services with ASP.NET 3.0 Web Applications.
I'm working on Visual Studio 2005, with SQL Server 2005 on an XP development workstation.
SQL Server, Reporting Services, and IIS are all running on my local machine.
I'm trying to prototype two approaches, one using the Report Viewer control, and the second using the Reporting Services Web Service. I have the two examples setup in projects in Visual Studio.
The sample reports and data sources work fine in Visual Studio. I can access the report using the Reporting Services URL like this: http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fBTT_BDS_DEV%2fCustomers; Report works fine.
My problem is, that when I try and access the report using the Report Viewer inside an ASP.NET page or from the Web Serivce hooked up inside an ASP.NET Page I get a security errors. I have chosen Windows Security for the Datasource, and ASP.NET pages. In the case of the Web Service, I'm passing in my local domain user name as the credentials.
I'm prototyping this on my local workstation, but I need to design this to be used on our corporate Intranet using Windows Security.
My questions are:
1. How do I need to setup users on my local development workstation to get this to work.
2. How should I plan for user security for enterprise deployment, i.e. using Reporting Services inside a large ASP.NET Web Application?
3. Can anybody give me some links to some good developer type working examples of doing this. I've looked but have not found the answers
to the "how do I setup users" part of the question specifcally related to ASP.NET apps?
Below is the code example of the Web Services example app I'm working with which came out of a book I have on
Reporting Services. This example compiles and seems like it would work but doesn't. Also following are a few of the
error messages I get when experimenting with the example apps:
Errors:

I know from searching this forum that there have been many variations of the issue I'm currently suffering, but I haven't found anything quite like mine or a solution to solve it. The issue I'm running into is that I am unable to log on to Reporting Services using Management Studio or the web interface when Windows Integrated Security is enabled. I have full functionality using basic security, but the risks involved make it impossible to deploy basic authentication out into production. The error I'm receiving in Management Studio is The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient). I recieve the same error when I try the web interface.
I've looked the most recent logfile in WindowsSystem32LogFilesW3SVC1 and these entries match up to the time I attempted my authentication.

I tried to highlight one of each of the HTTP errors I am getting. 401.2 and 401.1 are the ones I kind of expected, but have no idea why I'm getting them. The 500 0 error is a bit troubling, because unless I'm mistaken thats a server side error.
Here's my current setup. As far as I can tell, I've done everything to set up correctly for Windows Integerated security.
My Specs
The server machine running all SQL 2005 services. It resides in a domain. All Clients are in the same domain.
Intel Dual Processor 3.20 gig Xenon
Windows Server 2003 w/ SP2
Microsoft Sql Server 2005 w/ SP2
Reporting Services Setup
The virtual directories Reports and ReportServer are set to Windows Integrated Security with Anonymous Access disabled. All other checkboxes in Directory Security are unchecked. For permissions in Reports, I have:
Administrators (servernameAdministrators) - Full Control
ASP.NET Machine Account - Modify, Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write
Authenticated Users - Modify, Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write
Creator Owner - No permissions
Domain Users - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SQLServer2005ReportingServices]WebServiceUsers$... - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SQLServer2005ReportServerUsers$... - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SYSTEM - Full Control
Users (CompNameUsers) - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
In ReportServer I have the same permissions except Authenticated Users is absent.
At one point, I even added the account Everybody and gave it full control, and I still recieved a HTTP 401 error. Any help at what I might be missing would be a godsend.
Thanks.

Hello all,
Recently, we ran into the issue that you can't do an insert into..exec statement on a loopback linked server that was previously commented on in:
http://www.dbnewsgroups.net/link.aspx?url=http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=124137&SiteID=1
So, for example, if you have a linkedserver to a database that happens to be on the same server as the querying thread, it fails with the message 'context in use'.
The answer from the previous thread was, don't use linked servers when the database is on the same server.
However,
The enviornment in our production system is fairly dynamic -- operations can be expected to move databases around in response to load balancing issues. We were counting on linked servers to make certain (non-performance sensitive) queries without regard to where a given database was located. Accepting that we have to make an exception case where the database lives on the same server means we'll have to have two sets of queries for every case this happens.
Something like
(pseudocode)
If server of linkedserver <> @@server
Insert into table....
Exec linkedserver.database.dbo.sproc
Else
Insert Into Table
exec database.dbo.sproc
(end pseudocode)
This seems pretty kludgy to me -- any suggestions on how to better manage this situation?
Thanks in advance

Hello,
I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified.
Restored my Reportserver and ReportserverTempDB databases
Then I was using the configure Report services to upgrade these databases but I always end up getting the follwoing exception when I run the upgrade on the "Database Setup" configuration for 'ReportServerTempDB' database
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.

at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Common.DBUtils.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.SqlClientTools.SqlTools.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
It's driving me crazy, why is it looking for 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB' in the catalog instead of 'ReportServerTempDB'?
Is it possible to migrate from 32bit to 64bit?
Any help is appreciated

Hi!
I am installing SQL Server 2005 Express as part of my setup. On Windows 2003 Servers with password policy enabled, the SQL Server 2005 Express installation fails. Here is the error I am getting - "the sa password must meet SQL Server password policy requirements. For strong password guidelines, see Authentication Mode, in SQL Server Books Online.". If I disable the password policy, the SQL Server 2005 Express installation is OK.
Is there a parameter that I can pass to the command line to get around this?
Thanks!

I have a complicated question that involves the password policy defined within Windows Server 2003 and how it is used in Microsoft SQL Server 2005. I recently installed windows server 2003 on my development system. I am a person that prefers to develop in the same OS that our application runs in production. After installing 2003, then a Domain administrator added my machine to our corporate domain. Now, I cannot change the local password policy to allow a simple password. I believe this is due to policy inheriting from the domain that the machine belongs to.
This ties back into SQL Server 2005 because installing sql server on a Server 2003 causes SQL Server 2005 to follow the password policies defined at the OS level. This breaks our application in a subtle way in that we create login accounts for new client databases with random password. Because the password is random it sometimes conforms to the policy and sometimes not.
In production environments, the password policies are configured differently. So I need to one of the following options:
-change the group policy/inherited policy on my machine to not inherity from the domain I joined (prefered solution but don't know HOW)
-change SQL Server to not use OS password policy
-change code to use CREATE LOGIN statement with CHECK_POLICY=OFF or change password generation code to use a stronger password. (don't want to do this as the code change is only accomodating non-production environments)
If someone has a better place to post this question, I would sure appreciate it.

Using SQL Server 2005 SP2 std edition on Windows 2003 R2 SP2 x64 std edition I'm allowed to break the password policy.
To reproduce this behaviour as a system administrator run...
create login testuser with password='p'
This creates a login with the default of POLICY enabled ('Enforce Password Policy' check box is checked). OK, so may be system administrator is allowed to break the policy but now login as testuser and run
alter login testuser with password='t' old_password='p'
This succeeds despite obviously breaking the policy.
Surely this can't be right, I must be doing something wrong.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone.
I have a question about granting enough rights to allow a non admin user to start and stop a sql server service via the SQL Server Management Studio by right clicking on the server node.
I have changed the acl's of the SQL Server service security and gave the user rights to start and stop the service. This does allow them to connect remotly to the server using computer manager and they successifully start and stop the service. But, in SQL Server Management Studio the option still does not show up, unless he is a admin of the server.
Does anyone know what other security settings I need to address for the start and stop to show up when I right click on the server node?
Thanks for any help

I'm attempting to obtain a cost effective solution for my existing customers to develop reports on their SQL 2000 Server installations using their Reporting Services 2000. With products like Visual Basic.NET 2003 becoming almost impossible to obtain, I have at least one customer who is running into a dead end.
One option possibly is the SQL Express with Advanced Services download, which has Reporting Services. My questions are as follows:
Can the report designer component of SQL Express Reporting Services be configured to connect to an external database (which would happen to be a SQL 2000 database) to establish its datasets?
Does the resultant designed report end up in an RDL file? If the customer published this report via the Reporting Services 2000 Report Manager, would the report be able to run?
Sorry for asking a question like this that I could probably answer on my own, but my customer needed this answer yesterday. I have scoured the web and microsoft sites - and posted a question on the official SQL Reporting Services cateogy ... in an attempt to answer the basic question of how to design reports for Reporting Services 2000 in the absence of Visual Basic.NET 2003 (or other .NET 2003 tools) with no success.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I have a user, who is trying log into the server, but everytime he gets this error saying something about the Group policy denies him access.
This user needs access and i'm trying to understand how to grant it to him.
I have been looking into how i can access the group policy editor, but the farthest i can get is the Local group policy editor. How do i make sure this specific user has access?

Is there any way to enforce table references in stored procedures? For Example, we have stored procedures with a ton of different formats, "dbo.table", "table", "db.dbo.table", etc. Can we make it so that for every stored procedure, the reference must be at least "dbo.table"?

I am trying to learn Reporting Services using the title "MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step" by Stacia Misner and Hitachi Consulting, published in 2006. I am experiencing problems with some of the exercises. I got as far as Chapter 4 when I followed directions to create a SQL statement to define a query string for a dataset. Pg 80:
select * from vProductProfitability
where year = 2003 and
MonthNumberOfYear = 1
The view vProductProfitability does not exist in the tutorial database that came with the book, rs2005sbsDW. The result of this query is the basis for the entire chapter on developing basic reports and I'm being denied a learning opportunity because the view does not exist. In short, I'm stuck.
I have tried to find somewhere at Microsoft to place this question and get some answers so I can continue thru the tutorial. To no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions?
BTW, the solution that came in the CD is also wrong because the query noted above is also in the solution.
This humble grasshopper seeks wisdom.
Respectfully Submitted,

I work in a big project and we will begin in using reporting services as the base technique for reports and I will be responsible for this part. but I have a problem I will discuss in the following:
Currently: We use currently devexpress reports and we have 2 languages(Arabic and English). the data in tables saved in two ways (Arabic and English). when the end user change the language of the web site the report data language changed when run it.
Example:
we have table with (ID, NAME_AR, NAME_EN, JobTitle_AR, JobTitle_EN). designed report will display(ID, NAME_EN, JobTitle_EN) . but the end user change the language of the system the report will
dispaly(ID, NAME_AR, JobTitle_AR)Â
Hint:this done pragmatically
how to do this in reporting services.

Hi All,
I'm new to SQL Server Reporting Services.
I managed to install Reporting services ok on a laptop running XP Pro. However I have run into all sorts of problems trying to install it on a Laptop running Vista Business with II7.0
When I tried browsing the reports folder (by using the url: localhost/reports), it could not resolve it.
I got a bt further by using the url: 127.0.0.1/reports. However having part displayed the page it gave me the following error: The underlying connection was closed. An unexpected error occurred on a send.
I googled this error and was told to check the Reporting Configuration tool.
When I did this I got the following error
There was an error while refreshing the reporting services configuration manager. The exception details are:
A connection to the computer cannot be established
Details:
Access denied
However I can connect to SQL Server via Management Studio
Regards
Jude
