SQL Server Setup

Feb 2, 2005

Hi Everybody,

I was trying to install the SQL Server on my machine and I successfully did it because the server is running. I can get into the Enterprise Manager (without password) and I'm able to create new databases. Except, I can not log into those databases with the userid that I also created with full access. It must be somekind of security issue but I can not figure out what. The message says: "Unable to connect to server local - SQL server does not exist or access denied". If I look at my SQL service manager my server name is "NEWONE" , which is also my computer name. So, I'm not sure what's wrong. I tried to log in with the 'sa' account it doesn't work either.

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you,

Laszlo

Setup And Upgrade :: One Machine 6 IPs - How To Setup DNS For Server

Apr 24, 2015

I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:

MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1
MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2
IN DNS:
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2

If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.

MDAC 2.8 Fatal Setup Error. This Setup Does Not Support Installing On This Operating System

Jan 5, 2006

I have XP Pro SP2 with MDAC 2.8.1022.  It had a problem so I tried to reinstall MDAC and got a Fatal Setup Error. This setup does not support installing on this operating system. I downloaded MDAC 2.8 1177 and get the same error.

I thought of uninstalling/reinstalling SP2, but this is a 2 month old Dell Latitude 610 with factory installed XP.  There is no Windows Service Pack 2 option listed in the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

There's some other strange things, so I wonder if they are related.

1) I have Paul set up as an administrator account.  Some folders like MSSQL show that account with no permissions.  I grant all the permissions to Paul for that folder.  I come back later and the permissions are gone.

2) I deleted 20 files in Explorer, but 7 of them did not go away. I deleted those 7 again and they instatnly reappeared.  I deleted those 7 again and then they finally went away.

3) I get a slow reaction time for things like Windows Explorer and opening and closing programs. This is suprising since it has 2 gig of RAM and 2.3 Gig processor. Could it be a memory handling problem that's causing OS problems. Probably, the memory didn't handle the OS installation well and the whole system is compromised now.

Setup And Upgrade :: 2008 R2 Setup UI Has Incomplete List Of Installed Features - Can't Uninstall RS

Jul 23, 2015

We're doing upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014. This is blocked due to RS is installed but not configured. Our desired action is to uninstall RS and proceed with the upgrade. But when setuparp.exe is raised, it does not list all the features on the 'Select Features' page.  In fact, it only lists the last 2 shared features (SQ Client Connectivity SDK and Microsoft Sync Framework). However, all items appear to be listed on the 'Select Instance' page including RS. I've seen this issue on 2 of our SQL 2008 R2 Servers already.

Setup And Upgrade :: Error Setup Account Privileges

Nov 15, 2015

I'm trying to install SQL Server Management studio 2012 on my Windows 7 (x64) standalone laptop.  When I click "New SQL stand-alone installation..." it runs a Setup Support Rules check and always fails "Setup Account Privileges". I've looked into the error and I keep getting that I need to change security rules but I don't have that option in window 7.  How do I get around this without having to resort to a computer running Windows Server?

I have Visual Studio 2013 premium installed along with Localdb v11.  I just want to connect and manage my database engine through SSMS when developing any application.

SQL Server 2005 Express Adv. SP2 Setup Fails To Install SQL Server Database Serices Only.

Mar 26, 2007

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:

"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".

I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.

The most puzzling to me things are:

- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).

- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".

During installation before failing the setup displays following:

"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.

Thanks.

Any Books That Explain How To Setup Windows 2003 Server + SQL Server 2000?

Nov 24, 2004

My uncle runs a small networking company and has extra licenses for Windows 2003 Server as well as SQL Server 2000. Since I just graduated from college and have started working as a database programmer (for a different company) I'd like to setup a small server at home to learn more about SQL (as well as networking, but SQL is my primary concern). I know I can setup SQL Server 2000 on my main PC, but I'd still like to set everything up in a server environment.

So, what I'm wondering is if any books (or web sites?) exist that walk you through setting up Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server 2000. I've actually set these up before (it's not very complicated) but I'm not sure if I did it the "correct" way.

Ideally if any books exist on O'Reilly's Safari Bookshelf that would be even better.

Thanks in advance,
John

SQL Server 2005 SP2 Replication

I am having problems installing the SQL Server Compact Server Tools on my
Vista laptop to allow me to connect my Mobile Device running SQL Server
Compact directly to my SQL Server 2005 database through IIS.

I have done this successfully with an XP machine so I'm not sure if it is
Vista problem or not.

I have installed SQL Server 2005 SP2. When I try to install the replication
server tools (Sqlce30setupen.msi), in "System Configuration Check" window I get a failure on "SQL Server requirement" that says: "You must first install the Replication Components for SQL Server 2000 SP 3a
or higher or the SQL Server 2005 Replication Components" and the client components are full instaled in my computer.

I need help for detect and correct the problem.

Setup Issue: Unable To Install SQL Server 2005 Express On Windows 2003 Server SP2

Aug 17, 2006

Hello Experts,

I have been unable to install SQL Express 2005 Server on my Windows 2003 Server (with SP2 installed). I keep getting an error message saying that Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is not installed.

So, I downloaded Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) but whenever I try to install it I get an error message saying that "the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying" and that there is no need to install the update and it stops there.

Is there a workaround to this? How can I get Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 installed? I tried going to the Windows Update site, I already have everything installed and I even started the Windows Installer service manually. Has anyone else experienced this?

How can I get SQL Server 2005 Express installed if not how can I install SQL Server 2000 on tihs machine? The only reason I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 is because wanted to try it so I uninstalled SQL Server 2000 now I can no longer install SQL Server 2000 again because it won't let me because of the SP2 patch.

Help! :(

SQL Server 2005 Setup Of 2 Vista Machines, Can't Get Individual Network Login Accounts To Work On Each Others SQL Server

Apr 16, 2008

Hello all,

I have 2 networked PC's both running vista ultimate

1st is Laptop and is running its own SQL Server at laptoplaptopSQL
2nd is Desktop and is running its own SQL Server at desktopdesktopSQL

Now both machines have seperate windows login accounts.

When I go SQL Server management studio I go to browse and each machine can see the other machines SQL Server, but when I go to login I get SQL Login falied for users" The user is not associaed with a trusted SQL server connection".

So I then go to logins new login and try to add my other pc's user account.
The problem I see is that when I go to search and then location it only shows its own PC's location and not the location of my other networked pc? So if I am on Desktop and in my theory want to add laptopuser to the desktop SQL Server logins I get:

"create failed for login laptopuser

An exception occurred while executing Transact SQL statement laptopuser is not a valid windows NT name. give the complete name

Not sure on where to go from here.

Any help would be great

Need Help With ASP.Net SQL Server Setup Wizard

Hello all,

Where can I find a document that describes how to setup and configure a standby server?

I'm new to SQL Server 7 (I like it). We have a NT 4.0 server with SQL Srvr 7. We just bought another Box that will have the same thing on it with the idea if the 1st goes down, the new box is a 'hot' standby...of course a 'cold' standby will be ok too... I'm not fussy at this point. If you have info on both great.

I'm the SQL Srvr 7.0 DBA (my background is Oracle DBA). I've been doing alot of reading!!!

Can some provide the information I need or point me to someone I can contact?

Master Server MSX/TSX Setup...

Oct 31, 2005

So, I'm looking into using an MSX/TSX setup to help manage and monitor jobs, etc.

I took two test boxes and set one up as a Master and one as a Target and got it working...was able to push a job out and it ran and reported back, etc.

So, that's all great, but this was one small limited test. I'm curious to know if there are any gotchas that some of you have experienced that you would be willing to share with me to help prevent me from experiencing the same issues, etc.

I have about 40 instances that I'm considering using this MSX/TSX setup with, the remaining 15 instances would be monitored by something like Quest. Can a single MSX handle jobs on 40 instances? I already have maintenance plans and jobs set up on all the remote servers. Is there a way to transfer their ownership up to the MSX so they can be monitored from there? So far I haven't seen a way to do that.

*ponders*

Actually, one thing I just realized is that I could set up a job that looked for failed jobs. If I pushed that job out to all the TSX servers that could be used to alert me that something failed on a TSX box. That would actually be a great way to do it the more I think about it...Can anyone think of a reason why that is a bad idea?

Thanks!

MSDE Setup -- Where's The Server?

Mar 12, 2004

I am using VB.net to build ASP.net pages. I finally decided it was time to start using SQL server based code. So, I installed MSDE....or so I thought.

I have the server Icon in the bottom systray and it's green and seems to be running.

I have been able to use Microsoft Access' Database Upgrade Wizard to create BB.adp file.

An in VB.net I see a master.dbo connection in Server Explorer.

But I can't figure out how to access the database via the SQL server. When I right click on Server Explorer....the Create a New SQL database menu item is greyed out.

My concern is that my installation is not complete and/or I don't know how to locate and verify the server.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I had SQL Server 7.0 ( NT 4) installed on my desktop . I have not used it for a while and lately found that there is a problem to start service. So , I decided to reinstall it.

As a result of installation I got the message : "Setup Failed to configure the server"
The log does not tell to much besides repreating the same message , that setup failed.
What could be a problem ? How I can fix it.

Thank you.

New Setup IIS, Reporting And SQL On One Server

Feb 3, 2007

i just installed the SQL 2005 Standard just for reviewing before installing enterprise edition on a server...with cluster.

I noticed you get path 90 and mssql.1, mssql.2, mssql.3
1...for SQL
2...for analysis olpa
3..sql reporting.

And it all goes on one server and Configures IIS.
Is it advisable to have all these servicess running on one server especially the IIS SQL Reporting and Analysis...

If i have 10 developers all doing net and cubes they could be overloading the entire Server

If anyone has this configured where all three services analysis, sql reporting working ...i like to your configuration settings .....do you have all these on one Server

NO SERVER SETUP AFTER INSTALL

Mar 27, 2007

Hi,

I am going crazy! I've installed SQL 2005 3 times now, but each time it completes there are no servers set up for me to connect to. I can't do anything without connecting to a server and I simply do not have one that is obviously available. How do I set up a server to begin working?

Linked Server Setup

Feb 13, 2008

I am trying to set up a liked server using the UI in Management studio. In the Object Explorer I can see the server i want to link to MyServer2 and I have connected to it. I goto to the server in which i want to create the link MyServer1 and click on Server Objects then Linked Servers, New Linked Server.

In the server name I enter the server I want to link to, MyServer1. I don't know what to enter or where after that? What else do i need to set up?

When i try this select i get the following error.

select * from MyServer1.MyDB.dbo.MyTable

Error:

Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
