Jun 27, 2014I have just upgraded a test server from sql server 2008 sp3 to sql server 2014 inplace upgrade. The compatability level of master database has not upgraded. It was showing 90 and the rest of system databases got updated to 120. Is it fine to update the compatibility level of master database ? Any precautions need to taken??

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: System Objects Could Not Be Updated In Database X Because It Is Read-only
Jul 27, 2015We installed SP1 for SQL Server 2014 this past weekend and got this error message in the logs. I found that if you set the db to read-write, it updates the system objects, even after SP1 has completed. Then you can set it back to read-only. I'm just posting this so other people can find it on the internet, as I wasn't able to find it specifically.
Error Log Entry:System objects could not be updated in database 'x' because it is read-only.
Problem: After installing SP1 for SQL Server 2014 you will find this message in the error logs saying read-only databases could not be updated.
Solution: Simply set the db to read-write and the system objects will get updated, long after SP1 was installed.
ALTER DATABASE [x] SET READ_WRITE WITH NO_WAIT
Then set it back to read-only:
ALTER DATABASE [x] SET READ_ONLY WITH NO_WAIT
You should then see these log entries:
System objects could not be updated in database 'x' because it is read-only.
Setting database option READ_WRITE to ON for database 'x'.
Starting up database 'x'.
CHECKDB for database 'x' finished without errors on 2015-07-25 01:02:28.143 (local time). This is an informational message only; no user action is required.
Synchronize Database 'x' (129) with Resource Database.
Setting database option READ_ONLY to ON for database 'x'.
Starting up database 'x'.

We are preparing a migration to SQL 2014, and the administrator is complaining he won't adopt this structure on the new servers because 'there is no benefit' and 'a backup cannot be restored (!?)'.

Rename S to G, T to H and U to W. Reboot the servers. The original G, H and W will then be X, Y and Z. The old S will be the new G, old T will be H and old U will be W. My question is that after doing this whether my SQL server will start or not

I have SQLServer20000 Enterprise Manager-Version 8.00 and Microsoft Enterprise Manager - V 2.0 Version 5.1 Service Pack 1 and SQL 8.00.760. A "user" owns the database and when I have the user logged to SQL Query Analyzer ( with user and pwd)
When enable Fixed server role as system administrator for that user (owns db)
select * from table1 says that the table does not exist
select * from "owner".table1 gives the records.
When enable fixed server role as security administrator for that user ( owns db)
select * from table1 outputs records
select * from owner.table1 outputs records.
If I have both system administrator and security administrator checked for the user the scenario is like "system administrator" where select statement outputs records only if owner is included in the statement.
When system administrator is the highest role why does it behave this way?
Any help is appreciated.

Why Would System Admin Privileges Be Required To Connect To A Default Instance?
Apr 25, 2007I have a server with 3 SQL Server named instances on it - servername, servername/TST and servername/GOLDSTD. I have several databases on the default instance (servername) but users cannot access the databases unless they are given system admin privileges to their login. This occurs using both SQL Server Logins and Windows authentication logins. If I move the database to a different named instance (servername/TST), the problem no longer exists and users can connect with dbo privileges. Any suggestions or is this typical for default instances? Thanks in advance for any help

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Does Security-admin Role Plus Deny Alter Any Login Cancel Each Other Out
Aug 27, 2015I want to set up a database role so that users can use sp_readerrorlog through SSMS. It does a check on membership in the securityadmin role.
I have tested it and can see you can grant execute on xp_readerrorlog but the SSMS GUI uses sp_readerrorlog.
I thought I could create a user/certificate and add the signature to sp_readerrorlog but it's not permitted (likely because it's not a normal database object).
So the other solution is to add the users to the securityadmin role but then explicitly deny alter any login (best done with a custom server role in 2012+ but otherwise just manually in 2008). I tested this out and it works, I'm not able to alter any logins or increase my own permissions, I also did a check of what's reported from fn_my_permissions(null, null) and it shows minimal permissions like I'd expect.

Apr 3, 2007Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :

Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?

Admin Access To SQL Without Server/domain Admin Access
Sep 6, 2007We are using Win2k3 R2 with SQL 2000 in a domain environment.
Is it possible to create a domain group to grant admin level and user level access to SQL2000/2005 without giving users server admin or domain admin access?
It has always been my impression that to have admin access to SQL that you had to at least had admin level access on the server.
Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Dec 5, 2014I've recently started working with a public sector organisation who have 4 clustered sql instances that has 80% of it's db mirrored.
Looking at the transaction log - it seems that a transaction log backup is a good idea as the log is 4x larger than the data file.But I'm not allowed access to the physical server to check onto which drive I can create the trn. No RDP, no vmware - let's be honest I'm not even allowed to launch cmd line Also the Server Manager informs me "We will need to carefully look at database backups if you guys want to start doing these backups on box, as that will break our off box backup routine (it will screw the transaction chain)."
I don't understand how backing up the transaction log could break the "transaction chain"?

Mar 30, 2015We are consolidating some old SQL server-environments from 'OLD' to 'NEW' and one of our vendors is protesting on behalve of the collation we use on our 'NEW' SQL server.
Our old server (SQL 2005) contains databases with collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
Our new server (2014) has the standard collation Latin1_General_CI_AS
Both collations have CI and AS
From experience I know different databases can reside next to eachother on the same Instance.
The only problem could be ('could be !!') the use of TempDB with a high volume of transaction to be executured in TempDB and choosing for Snapshot Isolation Level ....
The application the databases belong to is very static, hardly updated, and questioned only several time per hour (so no TempDB issue I guess).

But, I was able to use a work around by editing them in BIDS and saving them back on the server. But now with 2014, I am facing two issues:
1.I still can edit the package to correct the server connection, with SSDT; but the option to save back to the server is not available any longer!
2.I used to be able to see all my plans under SSIS in 2008 R2 but not in 2014 now. Although, they are listed in SSMS!

CM only supports Windows authentication, but for large organizations which will have multi domains.
