SQL Server Table's Column Referencing Two Parent Tables.
Feb 15, 2008
Hi everybody,
I know that it is possible for one column to reference two different parent tables by defining two foreign keys on a same column, I have done it and SQL Server does give any error. But I want to know that is it advisable to define multiple foreign key on a column referncing two differnt parent table's primary key in differnt case... ? Means If Case 1 then It should reference to column1 or table1 otherwise it should reference to table2? How is it practicle...?

For example, the table below, has a foreign key (ManagerId) that points to EmployeeId (primary key) of the same table.
-------Employees table--------
EmployeeID . . . . . . . . . . int
Name . . . . . . . . . . . nvarchar(50)
ManagerID . . . . . . . . . . . int
If someone gave you an ID of a manager, and asked you to get him all employee names who directly or indirectly report to this manager.
How can that be achieved?

Hello All
I have the following problem running an sp with a table variable (sql server 2000) - the error which occurs at the end of the query is: "must declare the variable @THeader" . @THeader is the name of the variable table and the error occurs with such references as @THeader.ApplyAmt, @THeader.TransactionHeaderID, etc.
declare @THeader TABLE (
TransactionHeaderID [int] NOT NULL ,
PatientID [int] NOT NULL ,
TransactionAllocationAmount [money] NOT NULL ,
ApplyAmt [money] NULL ) - create table variable
insert into @THeader select TransactionHeaderID,PatientID,TransactionAllocationAmount,ApplyAmt from mtblTransactionHeader where PatientID = 9 - fill the table variable
UPDATE @THeader
set TransactionAllocationAmount =
(SELECT isnull(Sum(mtblTransactionAllocation.Amount),0)
FROM mtblTransactionAllocation where mtblTransactionAllocation.DRID = TransactionHeaderID or
mtblTransactionAllocation.CRID = TransactionHeaderID) from @THeader, mtblTransactionAllocation - do the updates on the table variable
Update @THeader
set ApplyAmt = (SELECT mtblTransactionAllocation.Amount
FROM mtblTransactionAllocation where mtblTransactionAllocation.DRID = TransactionHeaderID and
mtblTransactionAllocation.CRID = 187 and PatientID = 9) from @THeader, mtblTransactionAllocation - do the updates on the table variable
- below is where the problems occur. It occurs with statements referencing columns in the table variable, i.e. @THeader.ApplyAmt
UPDATE mtblTransactionHeader
SET mtblTransactionHeader.TransactionAllocationAmount = @THeader.TransactionAllocationAmount,
mtblTransactionHeader.ApplyAmt = @THeader.ApplyAmt
FROM @THeader, mtblTransactionHeader
WHERE @THeader.TransactionHeaderID = mtblTransactionHeader.TransactionHeaderID - put the values back into original table
Thanks in advance

Hey there,
Trying to build a temporary table based on a parent table such that:select * into #staging from tbl_parent where 1=0
The temp table (#staging) picks up any NOT NULL constraints from the parent (tbl_parent) table and frankly, it doesn't meet my needs.I also tried to build a view of the parent (tbl_parent) table from which to base my SELECT INTO and still, the constraints followed.
I'm thinking perhaps it possble to iterate though the temp table using syscolumns sysobjects and and set the column NULL properties on the temp table AFTER its been created but in this approach, I'm working to avoid directly referencing the columns by name.
Is this possible? A better answer perhaps?
Purpose of exercie is to populate a record in memory before it hits the table.I'll be constructing the record on the fly so that at first, I won't have all the fields to de-Null the columns. Also, I don't wish to lose the fact that some of my fields are Null - once I've fully populated my temp record, I'll insert into my 'real' table and will depend on constraints to throw the appropriate error. In this I won't have to built custom error checking in the stored procedure itself but instead depend on SQL SERVERS built capacity to the throw the error. This opens a bunch of possibilities for extensibility since if at a later date a constraint rule changes, one need only change the parent table definition rather than cracking open the stored procedure.
Thank you for reading and a big thanks to you for replying :)

An example of what I am talking about is the employee table in the Adventureworks database. This has employeeID and then ManagerID, ManagerID just being the EmployeeID of the person whom the original reports to.
I know the queries for querying this type of data and even making recursive common table expressions. What I cannot seem to find is how one goes about BUILDING said table. I see all sorts of examples where people are just doing INSERT table VALUES () manually to load the table. The problem is, I need to create a table that has potentially thousands of records.
It will essentially be a dimensional map. Don't even get me started as to they why, I will just suffice to say that is what the client and project want . I have a process that will do this now, but it is not very dynamic and very hard coded. To me, there seems like there should be some sort of standardized methodology for handling this.

Hi all,
The requirement is to have a table say 'child_table', with an Identity column to refer another column from a table say 'Parent_table'..
i cannot implement this constraint, it throws the error when i execute the below Alter query,
ALTER TABLE child_table ADD CONSTRAINT fk_1_ct FOREIGN KEY (child_id)
REFERENCES parent_table (parent_id) ON DELETE CASCADE
the error thrown is :
Failed to execute alter table query: 'ALTER TABLE child_table ADD CONSTRAINT
fk_1_ct FOREIGN KEY (child_id) REFERENCES parent_table (parent_id) ON DELETE
CASCADE '. Message: java.sql.SQLException: Cascading foreign key 'fk_1_ct' cannot be
created where the referencing column 'child_table.child_id' is an identity column.
any workarounds for this ?

Given the sample data and query below, I would like to know if it is possible to have the outcome be a single row, with the ChildTypeId, c.StartDate, c.EndDate being contained in the parent row. So, the outcome I'm hoping for based on the data below for ParentId = 1 would be:

declare @parent table (Id int not null primary key, StartDate date, EndDate date)
declare @child table (Id int not null primary key, ParentId int not null, ChildTypeId char(2) not null, StartDate date, EndDate date)
insert @parent select 1, '1/1/2015', '12/31/2015'
insert @child select 1, 1, 'AA', '1/1/2015', '3/31/2015'

Excuse me if my terminlogy is inaccurate, i'm a .NETer that's new to SQL.
I was wondering if it's possible to reference a column in the WHERE CLAUSE that has been customily defined in the SELECT statement
for example
select employeeID, case when JobCode = 'A' then 'Accountant'
case when JobCode = 'C' then 'Consultant'
case when JobCode = 'B' then 'Biller'
End as JobType
from Employee
where JobType is not null
This does not work, and saids JobType is an invalid column name. Basically, what I want is to display the jobtype of the employee but i also want to only display the employees that are Accountants, consultants and billers.
Is this possible and what would be the best way of doing this?
I do not seem to be about to reference JobType in the WHERE statement.

Hi,
I have a self-referencing table, something like Emlplyee-Manager. I want to implement the cascading delete in this table. So when I delete a manager than all the employees should be deleted at ANY level below the manager.
I do not have DRI for the Foreignkey (manager)!!!
My problem is that the trigger fires only one time (for the "sons") and not for the "grandsons" and below.
I've used the following flags:
- nested triggers (in "SQL Server Properies", "Server settings" tabsheet)
- recursive triggers (database "Properties", "Options" tabsheet)
I've combined this 2 flags:
1. nested flag reset and recursive flag reset
2. nested flag reset and recursive flag set or
3. nested flag set and recursive flag reset
4. nested flag set and recursive flag set
The results are the following:
-for case 1, 2 and 3 the same results: the trigger fires just for the first level (the sons are deleted but the grandsons remains there orphan)
-for case 4 I have the following error message:
"Maximum stored procedure nesting level exceeded (limit 32)"
so I can't delete anything at all.
Any idea why the trigger doesn't fire for "grandsons" and below?
Could be that this above mentioned flags doesn't works for self-referencing tables ?
Thanks in advance

Hi everyone
I am totally confused, please help me. I am new to this
I am trying to split one DB (A) into two databases original (A) and new-Blank(B) by moving some tables from DB (A) to the new DB (B) however some of the tables has FK and Stored procedures referencing other tables that need to stay in DB (B), The questions are
1. after scritping these tables while they are in DB (A), and runing the script in DB (B) to re-create them, do I delete these table from DB (A), and the FK that references them.
2. What shall I do with the stored procedures. Turn them into trigers or else if turn them into trigers, in which DB should the triggers run (DB A of DB B),if these are becoming triggers do I delete the stored procedures from DB (A)
Any reply is appreciated

I'm just wodnering if you have two select statements, one nested inside another, can you reference tables from the outer loop?
for example, say I would like to find all employees who have at least two clients and employees and clients have a one to many relationship.
select *
from Employee e
where
(
select count(*)
from Clients c
where c.EmployeeId = e.EmployeeId
) >= 2
This obviously doesn't work - but how would i go about doing something like this?

Hi
This is for Sql Server 2000.
I get the following error :
View or function 'PS_EMPLOYMENT' is not updatable because the modification affects multiple base tables.
Sql is as follows:
INSERT INTO PS_EMPLOYMENT(EMPLID,EMPL_RCD,PER_ORG,BENEFIT_RCD_NBR,HOME_HOST_CLASS,OWN_5PERCENT_CO,
SECURITY_CLEARANCE,NEE_PROVIDER_ID,POSITION_PHONE,BUSINESS_TITLE,REPORTS_TO,
SUPERVISOR_ID)
VALUES('000004', 0, ' ', 0, 'M', 'N', ' ', ' ', ' ', ' ', ' ', ' ')
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Searching the KB i only found links to SP1 and SP3, the server is already at SP3.
BOL says the following:
SQL Server 6.x :
Updatable views were restricted to modifications that affected only one table
SQL Server 2000:
Updatable views can modify more than one table involved in the view. The DELETE, INSERT, and UPDATE statements can reference a view as long as SQL Server can translate the user's update request unambiguously to updates in the base tables referenced in the view's definition.
So why can this view not be updated in SS2000 SP3 ?
Here is a copy of the view defintion:

I have been provided a new data that i have imported to SQL server using SSIS with table name as TESTCEP which has a column name school_code. I have been assigned a task to update the old school_code vale ( ADSCHL) with new school_code ( TESTCEP) and make sure the changes happen across all 3 tables.
I tried using Merge Update function not sure if this is going to work.

Any ideas how can I pass date range values from the where clause of an outer query to the inner correlated subquery ... without using a stored procedure because I am using Report Builder?
Using the simplified sql below I need the average freight charge between the dates for all of the ShipCountry's orders. (I have hard coded the dates for demo purposes only as it is these that I need referenced from the outer query's where clause.)
select
OrderDate,
ShipCountry,

Freight,
/* how do I get to the outer query's date range ? */
(SELECT AVG(Freight) FROM Orders WHERE ShipCountry = O.ShipCountry AND OrderDate between '01-jan-1997' and '01-jan-2000') AS CountryAverageFreight
from
Northwind.dbo.Orders O
where
ShipCity = 'Paris' and OrderDate between '01-jan-1997' and '01-jan-2000'

I have one table that has unique id's associated with each row of information. I want to delete rows of information in one table that have a unique ID that references information in another table.
Here is a basic breakdown of what I am trying to do:
Table1 (the table where the rows need to be deleted from)
Column_x (Holds the id that is unique to the various rows of data - User ID)
Table2 (Holds the user information & has the associated ID)
Column_z (holds the User ID)
I tried this on a test set of tables and could not get it to work. What I am trying to do is skip all rows of Table1 that have ID's present in Table2, and delete the rows of ID's that are not present in Table2.
Code:
SELECT Column_z
FROM dbo.Table2
DELETE FROM dbo.Table1
WHERE Column_z <> Column_x
This did not seem to do what I needed, it did not delete any rows at all.
I wanted it to delete all rows in Table1 that did not have a reference to a user ID that matched any ID's in Column_z of Table2
Then I tried another scenerio that I also needed to do:
Code:
SELECT Column_z, Column_a
FROM dbo.Table2
DELETE FROM dbo.Table1
WHERE Column_z = Column_x AND Column_a='0'
'0' being the user id is inactive so I wanted to delete rows in Table1 and remove all references to users that were in an inactive status in Table2.
Neither one of the Queries wanted to work for me in the Query Analyzer when I ran them. It just said (0) rows affected.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong here?

SupervisorID (which is really just another EmployeeID)
..random junk...
Now that part makes sense, everyone gets one and only one boss.
Their boss can change, and therefore the SupervisorID would be updated.
Now I have an EmployeeEvals table that has quarterly evaluation data.
I want to relate these two tables.
Eval table has
EvalID (PK)
ReviewedEmployeeID (the one being evaluated)
SupervisorID (the one doing the evaluation)
Now I need to link this back to the employee table (at least I think I do).
So I would want to relate it by the ReviewedEmployeeID going back to EmployeeID in the employee table and I also want the SupervisorID to do the same...
But of course that won't work because that would seem to indicate that a single record on the Employees table (say EmployeeID 55) should have a matching (or could) record in the Eval table that would look like
EvalID: 12345
ReviewedEmployeeID: 55
SupervisorID: 55
which of course wouldn't happen as an employee wouldn't evaluate themself.
How do I handle the relationships for this properly?
Do I just not link the SupervisorID back to anything?
