SQL Server Build (Pagefile Configuration)

Mar 14, 2008

Need some recommendations on . I have been tasked with building some SQL servers. The hardware config is:

4 Quad-core processors
64 GB of RAM (128GB of RAM coming in next group of servers)
4x73GB hard drives.

We normally build the servers with two Raid 1 disk groups. Mirroring the OS on one Raid group and keeping the default pagefile (for crash dumps) and then create another large pagefile on the other Raid group. We have been told from our parent company that we are to build the servers with a RAID 5 config and place the pagefile onto the same raid group as the OS. I know this is wrong and I need evidence to support my thoughts. If anyone has any links to whitepapers or research I would greatly appreciate it.

PAE, AWE And Pagefile

Jul 10, 2006

Can you please consider the following scenario:

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (32-bit)

SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition

Server with 8GB memory

1. If we enable /3GB and /PAE, the server can see and use 8GB memory, OS has 1GB, applications can use the remaining 7GB, can install 2 instances of SQL with a max server mem set to 3GB each, SQL should be able to allocate memory from the upper 4GB RAM. (True / False)

2. We only need to enable AWE if any single instance need to cache more than 4GB of data so we could for example configure one instance with AWE and set the max mem to 5GB and set the second instance to use 2GB max . (True / False).

3. 32-bit windows server OS can support a maximum of 4GB virtual memory, does this mean setting the pagefile to more than 4GB is a waste of disk space or does PAE extend this limitation ?

4.With AWE enabled, anything above the 4GB virtual space is used for data caching only (can't be used to manage user connections, locks, stored procedure compilations...etc). How does this work when running 2 separate instances with 3GB each and AWE disabled? would they receive 4GB of virtual pageable address space each ?

AE

Sizing A Pagefile On Servers With Large Amounts Of Memory

Sep 19, 2007

I know the standard Microsoft recommendation is to make the pagefile at least 1.5 to 3 times larger then the amount of physical memory. However, if you're talking about a server with lots of memory such as 16GB or 32GB, would following this rule be unnecessary. With SQL 2000 running on Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 I typically see pagefile usage no more then 12% for a 2GB pagefile. Anything over 15% means I need to look at other indicators to see if a memory bottleneck has developed. If I have 32GB of physical memory and make the pagefile only 1.5 x 32GB I have a 48GB pagefile. 10% of this is 4.8GB, which I would hope I never see consumed.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Dave

Error On Build Solution, If SSIS Project Is Part Of Build

Mar 22, 2006

Hello,

we have automated build on every night. In our solution is SSIS project, where each package is encrypted per password. We call build process per command line like this..

C:ProgrammeMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe (c:DevelopmentX3\X3.sln /build Release)' in 'c:DevelopmentProjectsDailyBuild

Through build process we get a error:

External Program Failed: C:ProgrammeMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe (return code was 1):

We think a reason is, that on build of SSIS project must be entered a password. You can wonder for what we need that SSIS packages are part of our build. We hope that on build process is also created Deployment Utility, if so set in dtproject.user. Is it so? Is there any way to create Deployment utility on automated build process? Can be a password provided pre command line?

with best regards

SQL Configuration Manager And SQL Server Surface Area Configuration Tools

May 2, 2007

I have just finished installing SQL 2005 Ent Edition on Win 2000 Adv Server, SQL2005 SP2, and SP2 Hotfix KB934458. After the installation, I could see and configure all services via SQL Configuration Manager and SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tools. This worked for a couple of days and now both configuration tools no longer detect SQL2005 components. SQL Server Surface Area Configuration issued an error that said "No SQL Server 2005 components were found on specified computer. Either no components are installed, or you are not an administrator on this computer. (SQLAC)". SQL Configuration Manager did not list any installed services. I don€™t know what caused this. Anyone has any idea? Please help! Below is the Installation Report which shows installed components.

Problems With Merge Rep After Upgrading From Sql Server 2000 Sp3a To Sql Server 2005 Build 2153

Mar 6, 2007

Hi,

We just upgraded 2 sql servers from sql server 2000 sp3a to sql server 2005 build 2153, and merge rep exists between these 2 servers.

However, after sql server upgrade, we had to reinitialize merge replication and now the merge agent is reporting 2 errors

1)

Error messages:

The Merge Agent failed to upgrade triggers, metadata and stored procedures on the Subscriber to versions compatible with SQL Server 2005. Restart synchronization, and if this failure continues to occur reinitialize the subscription. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199403)
Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL-2147199403

Invalid column name 'metadata_select_proc'. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 207)
Get help: http://help/207

Invalid column name 'delete_proc'. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 207)
Get help: http://help/207

2)

Command attempted:

{call sp_MSensure_single_instance (N'Merge Agent Name', 4)}

Error messages:

The merge process could not connect to the Publisher 'Server:database'. Check to ensure that the server is running. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199368)
Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL-2147199368

Another merge agent for the subscription(s) is running or the server is working on a previous request by the same agent. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 21036)
Get help: http://help/21036

looking inside the sp_MSensure_single_instance stored procedure, it's trying to obtain an exclusive lock on resource 'Merge Agent Name' but fails and returns -1

this is the stored procedure executed by sp_MSensure_single_instance and @retcode = -1 and thus cannot obtain exclusive lock on resource

EXEC @retcode = sys.sp_getapplock @Resource = 'Merge Agent Name',

@LockMode = 'Exclusive',

@LockOwner = 'Session',

@LockTimeout = 0,

@DbPrincipal = 'MSmerge_PAL_role'

so i think it's failing because for some reason MSmerge_PAL_role database role does not have enough rights to obtain exclusive lock on necessary resources

i've tried many things to fix this, including scripting out and dropping all merge rep, turning off replication db option and reapplying replication create scripts on the server, and even manually deleting the MSmerge_PAL_role database role but still doesn't work

can anyone help?

Thanks

SQL Server Version (Build) Question

Apr 4, 2007

All,

I'm currently running SQL Server 2005 SP2 with the 3050 hotfix. I just noticed that KB Articles 934458 and 934459 came out, which are more hotfixes for SQL Server 2005 SP2. However, I'm confused.

KB Article 934458 refers to patching versions 3042 - 3053 whereas KB Article 934459 refers to patching versions 3150 - 3158. What's the difference between the 30xx and the 31xx builds? I thought all SQL Server versions used the same build number.

Thanks for any clarification you can provide!

Which Edition And Build Of SQL Server 2005 To Use For Biztalk 2006?

Oct 12, 2007

Hi all -

We are planning to use a 2-node SQL Server 2005 cluster as part of a new Biztalk 2006 project, and I would like some advice regarding SQL Server service packs and editions.

Testing has already been running for some time without problems, but the test environment (a) is not clustered, (b) is using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition rather than Enterprise and (c) has neither of the SQL Server service packs installed.

As this is a major project for us, my instinct would be to use Enterprise Edition (maximise performance and scalability)
and to apply SP2 (because I thought it was best practice to be up-to-date). I would have liked to do this before we go Live so we don't run the risk of having to change afterwards if we hit a problem.

Understandably, the project guys' perspective is this: testing so far has not been affected by SQL Server bugs, and we should go Live with the environment we have tested in, albeit with the planned 2-node cluster which is seen as a 'must have'.

I have trawled Books Online, Technet and other resources without success, so any thoughts or info on required, recommended or preferred combinations of Biztalk 2006 with SQL Server 2005 editions and service packs in a clustered
environment would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Michael

SQL Server 2005 SP1 Upgrade Results In Build 2040

Installing CU4, Build 3200, On SQL Server 2005 Which Is Running On A Cluster

Apr 3, 2008

I have no idea how to apply "fixes" or updates to SQL Server when it is running on a cluster.

We are currently running SQL Server 2005 with SP2. The version would be Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3042.00 (X64) Feb 10 2007 00:59:02 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

I am hoping that someone can tell me of a document that exists, that includes the very basics, on how to do this. I need something that says go to the cluster and do these steps in this order, etc. from start to finish.

Thank you.

Configuration Manager - Which Configuration Type To Chose ?

Jan 14, 2006

It seems to me, that the best way is to have one Environment Varible containing the name of the SQL Server, so that you can look up the configuration in the SSIS Configuration Table when you run the package.

Is this the preferable way of doing it ? I would like to hear some positive/negative comment of why chosing a configuration type instead of another.

It seems to me that putting all of the configuration in the Environment variable is harder work but most secure (server breakdown vs table corruption/database error...)

Let's have some comments

SQL Server Setup Could Not Connect To The Database Service For Server Configuration

Jun 4, 2006

OS: XP-SP2

Not able to install SQL Express 2005.
------------------------------

SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SSL Provider: The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.
Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. For details on how to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log Files" in SQL Server Books Online.

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.1399.06&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=29515&EvtType=lib%5codbc_connection.cpp%40Do_sqlScript%40OdbcConnection%3a%3aconnect%40connect%40x80090325

Needles to say, above link is useless..

I had managed to install previously, but ran into problems while trying to upsize an MS-Access database, I've tried everything from creating certificate to hacking away at the registry...Log-on with a different account, etc...Anybody knows how to get around this?

Here's part of the log file:

Connecting Surface Area Configuration To Server On Clustered Server

May 8, 2006

I've run into a problem after upgrading production servers running under Microsoft Cluster Server, Windows Enterprise Server 2003 SP1, and SQL Server 2005 SP1 Enterprise Edition.

Once I completed the upgrade and applied the patch, I needed to examine the values set in the Features component of the Surface Area Configuration tool. The tool attempts to connect to localhostinstancename, but reports the following error:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error:26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)

I'm logged into the virtual server via Remote Desktop, but the SAC tool thinks I'm logged into the physical server supporting the virtual server. I seem to be caught between a rock and a hard place here, as I can't enable remote connections without first gaining access on the server itself.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Asp.net Configuration Sql Server

Mar 10, 2008

Hi All,
Using Visual studio 2005 you can create a simple database to enable the use of login using asp.net configuration by clicking on website on the menu bar. By default the database is created and stored in the App_data file. However my service provider has a separate server for SQL (SQL Server), therefor it will not work.
How can I use this Asp.Net Configuration to create a database on my sql server?
Hope this question makes sense!!

SQL Server Configuration

Apr 6, 2001

To get an understanding of the SQL Server technology and the hardware requiremnets. To configure a VLDB system for OLTP what is a typical hardware configuration that will be used.

No of Rows:10 Million
No of Tables : 50

Will have to spilt this out into many databases, or will one database be able to handle this. Assume that the database is normalized.

Any suggestion or information will be of great help. Does MS have any information relating to this information on their web site?

New Server Configuration

Jun 21, 2002

We are upgraded from sql 7.0 to sql 2000. We have a brand new server in which we are installing it on. We are trying to decide on the best setup for it. The db are a datawarehouse. So mainly used for input. Gets updated with new data once a day.

We were going to have:
Partician 1 : Raid 1 - OS and Applications

Now we are trying to decide on the other particians:
We have 6 36 Gig Drives to work with. One of them is going to be a hot swappable So basically we have 5 36 Gig drives to work with. I've read that its better to divide up the data/logs/tempdb. Would the following setup be good for performance or if not what would you recommend: We were thinking of making all of them Raid 5. My network guys say that with Raid 5 I'll end up with about 70 % so that accounts to about 127 Gig. So I was thinking the following:

partition 2 - Data Files 112 gig
Partition 3 - Logs 10 Gig
Partition 4 - Tempdb 5 gig

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated - trying to get this set up with the best possible scenerio for performance.

Stacy
