SQL Server Do Host Variables Need Rtrim
Aug 13, 2007
I understand that for SQL Server rtrim is not needed in where clause equates because SQL Server
automatically trims the spaces. Is rtrim necessary when comparing to a host variable since rtrim is a deterministic function? It it needed in the following example
Select ....
where
TEXT = rtrim(:I--HV-001)
TEXT is a varchar column in the SQL Server database and it is getting compared to the host variable.

Hello,Does anybody know what is the documented and known behavior ofinserting/updating binary columns using host variables from a client to aserver which have different code pages? Will any code page / character setconversion take place? I am particulary interested in insert/update fromsubqueries.eg:insert into t1(binarycol) select :HV1 from t2versusinsert into t1(binarycol) select :HV1||charcol from t2update t1 set bytecol=:HV1versusupdate t1 set bytecol=:HV1||'abc'insert into t1 (bytecol) values(:HV1)versusinsert into t1 (bytecol) values(:HV1||'abc')Is the conversion dependent on the context?ThanksAakash

When is RTRIM needed in a Select ... where clause. I noticed that if I have a column named TEXT varchar(17) which is varchar and in the where clause I state where
TEXT = 'This is the text'
or I state
TEXT = 'This is the text ' followed by 4 spaces
The equate still works - so when do I need RTRIM?
Do I need RTRIM for a host variable:
...where TEXT = RTRIM(:VAR_001)
if the host variable is the same length as the TEXT column field in the SQL Server 2005 database?

I am trying to use the RTRIM command but it does not seem to be working. If I perform
select rtrim(name) from table
it returns the row with the spaces in it anyway. ???

I have some data that contains spaces both before and after the text string, and now I'm wondering what would be the best method to remove these blanks (sometimes there are no blanks, so I can't check with a specifik width)?
Is it possible to do something like:
set foo = ltrim(rtrim(foo))
or do I have to split it into 2 steps?
This trimming will be done in update & insert statements

Could anyone explain why this happens:

select 'works' where '1' = '1'
select 'works' where '1' = '1 '
select 'works' where '1 ' = '1'
Seems to me like trailing blanks are automatically trimmed, why?

At work, we are in the process of moving a server running SQL Server 7 from one domain to another. A part of this domain change will necessitate that the server be renamed. In a couple of tests that we ran we found that changing the domain does not cause problems, but changing the server name does. How does one register the databases with the new server name without reinstalling everything from scratch?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as we are under a time crunch here. Please reply to my email as I am unable to check this board often.
Thanks,
Mike Sinnott

VPC Host: Vista 64Bit
VPC Guest: Win2K3 (32Bit)
VPC is configured to use the wireless card on the host.
Firewalls on both systems are completely disabled.
Machines can ping each other.
Both machines can access the Internet.
I can browse the SQL Reporting Services Web Site on the Host from the Guest.
Host SQL Install has remote connections enabled.
If I browse for Network server from teh connect dialog on teh Guest, it finds the Host.
Why can't I connect to the Databse Engine on the Host from the Guest?
I have tried both TCP/IP and Named Pipes and both show a connection failure. (Not a login failure)
If it matters, the Guest OS also has a SQL Database Engine running. But I don't know why that would stop me from connecting to a remote instance.
And suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I don't know why my application on the internet try to access the SQL Server 2005, when the host still having the 2000 edition. I put the following connection string:
Data Source=##DBSERVER##;Initial Catalog=##DBNAME##;User ID=##DBUSER##;Password=##DBPASSWORD##;
Isn’t everything fine with that? I created the table by host but dosen’t work. I’m wondering if can I conect straight with Data Base, without register in the server, like with mdb?
This is the error that I’m getting.

Issues on Changing Name of our SQL Server Host
Michael G (m1g@hotmail.com)
We are going to rename the Server machine Host Name that our SQL2000
(named instance) Server now resides on.
* I am searching for all references in Operating System items, such as .cmd, .bat. ftp files referring to it (eg., sqlservNM)
* I am searching for all references in Operating System items, such
as ODBC, VB ADO, DOA and DSN-less connections that refer to it.
These references will be changed manually on the day of the change.
I am NOT so certain that I need to search for all SQL Server Objects referring to it, (eg., DTS packages and scheduled Jobs). Must these
objects be changed manually or will they be redirected somehow?
Anyone with any experience on this?
Thanks,
Michael

I have a DistributorInvoiceNumber that can end with in 'R', 'A', 'CRR' or 'CR'.I am trying to write a case statement like so:
CASE WHEN RIGHT([ih].[DistributorInvoiceNumber],1) = 'A'
THEN 'ADJ'
WHEN RIGHT([ih].[DistributorInvoiceNumber],1) = 'R'
THEN 'REV'
WHEN RIGHT([ih].[DistributorInvoiceNumber],3) = 'CRR'
THEN 'REV'
WHEN RIGHT([ih].[DistributorInvoiceNumber],2) = 'CR'
THEN 'CREDIT'
ELSE NULL END AS 'Status'
For the most part the code is working, with the exception of the fields that just end in 'R'. An example of this is 471268R, 2525125901CRR, 11100325230CR
Basically if the number ends with an A, then its an Adjustment, if it ends with JUST an R, then its a Reversal; if it ends with just a CR then it is a Credit and if it ends with CRR then it is a Reversal (Credit Reversal). How can I differentiate between the different R's since three of them end with R? Would I use a RTRIM command somehow?

(i am not sure which forum to post this too)
Hi, I imported a table onto my host's server, table_Login which has username password, and userID. userID is Primary Key & identity.
When I had my code do insert of new user, I was getting error the Login.userID doesn't allow null values. Which shouldn't have mattered because userID is an identity.
After making a diagram from Enterprise Manager, I noticed that I have two Login tables (although only one shows in Enterprise Manager's "Table" node view. The second table, which had none of the constraints that my table of the same name which is listed under the "Table" node does; appears to be the table which is being written to by my code.
I can't find this table, Login(dbo), through Enterprise Manager, nor am i sure how to access it through Query Analyzer. Needless to say, I don't like this arrangement. and well tech support for this host seems to leave a lot to be desired.
Anyone know what needs to be done so that I can fix it or fight with tech support to convince them that they should?

How can this be accomplished?

Hello,
I need help in generating a stored proc script (SQL Server 7.0)that will:
document the changes of each field in a dbase (SQL Server 7.0)
appending the deltas (changes) to the dbase on a different, say production server for each affected field
prompt the user (dba, developer, super user) for the fields to involve in the comparing and documenting of changes (deltas).
thanks in advance for your help!
ALSO: Does SQL Server 2000 handle this situation better than SQL Server 7.0
