I have a 2003 Server which has two Named Instances of SQL Server 2000.
I need to add a third Named Instance, but when I logged onto the Server this morning, I noticed that all of the
'Microsoft SQL Server' Entries are missing from the START/PROGRAMS menu !! Enterprise Manager, BOL... everything!! The SQL Server Service Manager is running and both of my Instances are up and running (this is a production box). I can launch Enterprise Manager from MMC.EXE in WINDOWSSystem32 folder... very weird!!!!
In my Add/Remove Programs, I see MS SQL Server listed Twice.. one time for each of the two named Instances.
Has anyone ever seen this before??? Do you think it's safe to run SQL Server Installation to Install a Third Instance on this box???
I have installed SQL server 2005 enterprise edition on Windows 2003 virtual PC (full installation). The installation went through successfully. However, after install completed, I cannot find any of the client tools under the start menu -> all programs -> Microsoft SQL server 2005 menu. The only item listed under the SQL server 2005 is Configuration Tools, which is used to configure the database server.
I have tried to install the client component again (in case I didn't install them at the first place) but the installation process cannot be started since it detected that the client components have been installed already. I can also see the sql server native client running in the services.
The server engine is working fine since I can connect to that sql server using another machine where I have the client tool (SQL server management studio).
One of my friends has exactly the same problem. He installed the sql server 2005 Standard edition on windows 2003 server (full installation), but the client tools are not showing up in the start menu either.
I also checked the location for the SQL server management studio (Microsoft SQL server/90/Tools/Binn/VSShell/Common7/IDE), there is only one folder called publicAssemblies listed under. Is this correct or something is missing?
I installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and SQL Server Management Studio Express. I am trying to set up merge replication. When I right-click the Replication folder in Object Explorer, the Configure Distribution menu item is not there. Also missing is the New - Publication menu item. All I can do is add New Subscriptions. I am logged in as admin with full priveledges. Am I missing something? Thanks!

I'm packaging SQL 2005 Express as part of the installer for a custom program. The installer works fine and everything runs fine, but I don't want users to see the sql server > configuration tools start menu group and start playing around with settings.
Is there a command line option to not create the start menu group that anyone knows about, or another way to have the installer not create the icons?
I have SRS configured in SharePoint Integration mode. I have exposed a site collection under two MOSS-enabled websites - the first site has Forms Authentication enabled and the second site has Windows Integrated security enabled.
I have noticed that when I access the website with Forms Authentication I an unable to select "New (Report Model/Report Builder/Report DataSource)" options on my SRS integrated document library. When I access the site using WIndows Integrated security the menu options appear fine. Is there some sort of security trimming happening here that I am not aware of?
Excel 2007 Documents Not Displayed in Windows XP Professional sp2 Start Menu's Recent Documents List:
Dear Microsoft Support: I can't figure out how to get recently used Excel 2007 (new file formats) documents to show up in the Windows XP Professional (sp2) Start Menu's Recent Documents List. I checked the Internet, the knowledgebase, many parts of the MS web site, etc. for an answer but can't find one. Are Excel 2007 documents supposed to show up in the XP Start Menu's Recent Document List? Is this a bug or do I have to do some sort of configuration to make it do so? If it's a bug, when will a fix be available?
Are these new Excel 2007 files filtered out like EXE files are which will not appear in the Recent Document List?
The Excel 2007 file types are listed in the Registry.

I have an error when I try to insert information into a sql server database, and can't find how to fix it no matter how hard I try. The error I get is: Cannot start your application. I have it so a user is logged in and is shown a form to fill out, then submits it (which creates an insert statement and sends it to the database). If I wanted to search for Jobs as a particular status (e.g. 0130) and wanted to keep the jobs at this status until it has reached 0500, 0125, or 0900 in it's subsequent status log entry, how can I write the SQL for it to achieve it?
I have the following SQL which searches for the Jobs at 0130, but don't know how to develop it further to search on the requirement above.

In the job_status_log table above, there is a job_log_number field which increments by 1 when there is a new status log entry.
Where can I find a listing of all the registry entries made at install time - or, better yet - what entries I need to elminate on uninstall? I've installed and uninstalled MSDE a number of times on my development machine, and now I can't get MSDE 2000 Rel A to install at all. I think there is one or more key blocking the installer. Here is my situation. I have a table in my application that pairs users with cars they like. We'll call this table Favorites. A user can browse the site and they can designate as many cars they want as favorites. For example, a user can go to the Honda Accord page and add that as a favorite car and then go to the Toyota Camry page and add that as a favorite car. However, if he/she goes to that Honda Accord page and tries to click the "Add to Favorites" button again, at the present state of my application, it will just add another entry into the Favorites table with a duplicate pairing. So, if I were to datalist the table to generate a listing of all favorites belonging to a certain user, he/she may potentially be returned with superfluous duplicate entries. Not to mention, taking up valuable database space and not looking very professional. In my Favorites table, the 3 fields are.....favoriteId (set as primary key)userIdcarId I've been thinking about this for awhile and I've come up with 2 solutions. I'm a newbie to ASP.NET/programming so I don't have enough insight to make a decision or to even think up of other alternatives. 1) Check proactively by doing a.....SELECT favoriteID FROM Favorites WHERE userId = x and carId = y (where x and y are variables)If I get a null return, it means I can go ahead and let the user add the car as a favorite in the database. If I get a valid value, then it means there already exists the same pairing, so I exit out without updating the table. 2) Check reactively by forcing an exception whenever a user tries to enter a duplicate pairing. I'm not sure how to do this, but perhaps, instead of making "favoriteId" a primary key, perhaps, I can make a primary key pairing of "userId" and "carId". And by trying to do an insert with a primary key that already exists, we know it won't work since primary keys by definition are unique. Now, I expect some concurrent users on my site, so I must take into consideration pros and cons of each and determine which is more efficient. Checking proactively will force a check even if the table does not contain a duplicate pairing of user and car. However, having a duplicate primary key may be more expensive from a database point of view and may slow down lookups, etc. Or maybe neither has significant benefits, in which case, I rather go with proactive, since I've already coded it and it works fine. Or maybe there is a third alternative, which I did not think. Which method do programmers usually take and which is a better practice? TIA for your help.
I have created a database with several tables. I want to create a database diagram to show the relationshipbetween the tables. Below are the steps from the SQL Server 2005 documentation on how to create a database diagram. The problem is that when I right click on the Database Diagrams folder I am only given two options. So, can anyone tell me how do I get the 'Add New Item' menu item to appear so I don't have do the riduculous way of creating a new query, then open another non-project script item from template explorer, then copy the contents from latter to former and then close the superfluous non-project script item.
