SQL Server Gradually Consumes All Memory And Brings Down NT

Mar 10, 2000

Hello,

After launching MS SQL Server 7.0 SP 1 on a Compaq Proliant 5500 with 1GB memory the sqlservr.exe process gradually consumes all available memory and brings down NT.
This happens when there's appearently no activity on SQL Server.

What's going on?

DtsDebugHost Processes Consumes Huge Amounts Of Memory, Then Fails

Jul 18, 2006

I gave up on the ScriptTasks, but desided to use Custom tasks instead. Problem again. My code opens a 400M file and reads it line by line using StreamReader. Each line is approximately the same length. For each line, there is some processing, and then the line is written into another file using StreamWriter. I am watching the DtsDebugHost process with TaskManager open and here is what happens:

Initially its all good. Then when it read through first 150M+ of the input file, the memory usage of the DtsDebugHost shoots up dramatically - about 1Gig (both virtual and physical memory). Then the task fails with OutOfMemoryException. I thought the problem is with my code, but it still happens even if I only read a line from one file and write it to another, without any processing!

When I invoke the same code from Execute Process task, its all good - no problems at all whatsoever.

Any ideas?

SQL Server Consumes 100% CPU!!!

May 16, 2004

The problem is that our production SQL Server ALWAYS consumes the full CPU capacity when in operation. It also does not utilize the full 4G memory alloted to it, but only consistently uses 1.7G. Now, the application using the DB does use a lot of server-side cursors and since the software developer is a 3rd-party vendor, we can only do so much to recommend application optimization. Also, we've discovered that the application modules that were identified as mostly participating in high-CPU utilization does not always consume it highly, although they are the ones mostly involved in it. So, in relation to the limited usage of the 4G-alloted memory, we have theorized that perhaps the SQL processes may be hanging & waiting for each other to complete processing whenever more memory is needed, thus contributing to the server slow down, but this is memory not CPU utilization. We have been wracking our brains for ways to prevent the server slow down due to CPU utilization.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

How To Identify What Consumes Cpu In Sql Server

Jun 1, 2007

Hi all
I use 64 bit 2005 server with 8cpu and 8G of memory.
This server is accessed by large number of intensive or not so intensive programs.
I had eliminated all inefficient queries by means of sql profiler. What I see now is 30 procs or so runining in 1 second. They are all pretty simple and as I said use indexes. cpu column for most show 0, reads show 10 - 50 - pretty good.
But... my cpu utilization is 75% in avg. across of all 8 cpu's. I really can't find an answer for it.
If procs run so efficient, where does cpu go? Disk queue length is 0.04 or less - seems very good.
Task manager shows that all of it 75% attributed to sql server.
So which resources besides sql queries use so much cpu? Do I have to look at some other areas and which ones where cpu could be used besides sql queries themselves.

Thank you, Gene.

Inserts Gradually Slow Down

Jul 23, 2005

I'm inserting 2 million+ records from a C# routine which starts outvery fast and gradually slows down. Each insert is through a storedprocedure with no transactions involved. If I stop and restart the process it immediately speeds up and thengradually slows down again. But closing and re-opening the connectionevery 10000 records didn't help.Stopping and restarting the process is obviously clearing up someresource on SQL Server (or DTC??), but what? How can I clean up thatresource manually?

Scheduler Brings Down The System???

Jul 12, 2006

I am hoping this is something simple, a security piece I've messed up.

When I run my dts package manually I get no errors and sucessful completion of each step. So I set my SQL Agent to run thepackage 15 minutes after every hour between 5am and 5pm, these being 15 minutes after the times the new data files are dropped to me.

But instead of running the package it disconnects all the remote desktop users and fails. When remote users can get back on we are faced with a system has recovered from a serious error message. The error message posted to the event logs is empty though.

Any one have any ideas?

We are running MS Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000

Thanks,

Iif Problem Brings Back #Error

Dec 24, 2006

I'm pulling a "Number (8)" data type field for a date (formatted YYYYMMDD) from a Oracle 9i database. When the value is inserted into the database it is set a zero (A non-null database for the most part), otherwise it is for example 20061224. If the date field has a value the date is displayed correctly, but if it is zero then I get the "#Error" message.

Here is one of many iif expressions I've tried.

=iif(Len(CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value)) = 8,

((CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value)).Substring(4,2) + "/" + Right(CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value), 2) + "/" + Left(CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value), 4))

,

Nothing)

Now I've returned the value with out any formatting done to the string, and it will return "0"(zero) or a number. I've returned the lengths of the returning value and it comes back "1" or "8". I read a lot of previous posts and I thought at first that it was because I was trying to do a substring function on the zero value getting a index error. So I've changed the iif test condition many different ways with no prevail. I read a previous post where someone ended up doing his work in his SQL, but I would like to find out how to do this in the report. This is a simple expression, so I feel like there is something obvious I don't know maybe something with the format mask.

All help will be appreciated!

Performance Issues Total Server Memory Vs Target Server Memory

Aug 2, 2006

Hi

I did a load testing and found the following observations:

1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.

2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory

Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?

DTS Only Brings In Half Of Text File Records

Apr 19, 2007

All rows of a 1500+ record text file we have at work should be 512 spaces. Some are not and seem to be causing problems. I get half the records I should be getting on an import. When the DTS task comes across one of these records it takes it and appends them together and makes two rows one row. Any ideas? I tried making a table with one field of datatype char(1000) and tried to import into this table. I figured this would add any missing trailing spaces but no go.

Database Consumes Available Free Space?

Jul 12, 2012

I inherited a SQL server (2005) that sits on a Windows 2003 box (upgrading to 2008 R2 and Win2008, ASAP) and on our SQL Data Drive (260GB - 22GB free) we have 16 databases (that are associated with our primary application). One database in particular is causing me quite a bit of pain - on Tuesdays. This table will consume all available free space (save 700kb) and place it within it's 'reserved' space. It's not being used and I can reclaim it by shrinking. I have done this for 3 consecutive weeks now and I have always thought that shrinking is not really a best practice.

Based on a job I scheduled to spit out various database stats I discovered the following:

Somewhere after 11pm on Monday (and on or before 11:30pm) the reserved space goes from 9GB down to 23 then 37MB on this particular database.

After 1:30am on Tuesday (and on or before 2:00am) the database consumes nearly all available disk space and thus expands its reserved space to 28GB

I believe it has something to do with the Indexes being rebuilt - per the Maintenance Plan the Index Rebuild is supposed to occur every Monday @ 11pm. On 6/18 it ran from 11pm - 11:44pm with no problems. Starting on 6/26 (and subsequently 7/2 and 7/9) they have started at 11 and ended anywhere between 2 - to 3 hours later. And with the following error:

Failed-1073548784) Executing the query "ALTER INDEX [PK_activityLog] ON [dbo].[activityLog] REBUILD WITH ( PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, ONLINE = OFF ) " failed with the following error: "Could not allocate a new page for database 'FA_PROD_SDDS' because of insufficient disk space in filegroup 'PRIMARY'.

Create the necessary space by dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. The statement has been terminated.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

The database 'FA_PROD_SDSS' is the one that I am having issues with.

What Is Being Stored In ASPNETDB.MDF -- It Consumes ~1/2 My Sites Space!

Mar 14, 2007

Using VS2005, VB backend and javascript,
I have developed a relatively simple site - its got a few (12) simple aspx pages but its mostly client side javascript. Keeping disk storage costs down is a big concern with this my site. The disk usage for the site is ~24M. Since this was larger than I expected I started inspecting the files comprising my site and found that the "ASPNETDB.MDF" in my "App_data" folder is consuming 10.2M by itself. The thing is that site only has a few pages with calls to SQL Server - but I never did anything (that I know of) with ASPNETDB.MDF. Through VS2005, I opened up the MDF file and poked around, everything that I looked at was empty (NULL).
So my questions are:

What is causing the ASPNETDB.MDF to consume 10.2M even thought I can't see any data stored in it?
Is there anyway for my to reduce the size of this file? If so, how?
Can someone give me some pointers as to where to read up on what the ASPNETDB.MDF does?

Hi! 1st Time, Can't Program &<SelectParameters&> And Searching Around Brings No Definite Answer

Mar 22, 2008

Hello to all coding members!
I'm building my first ever complete website in the ASP.net VB language and I have to say, I'm pretty happy that I was able to learn from this website and to gain some ground.
Data retrieval and editing from tables and databases was very intuitive with the Visual Web Developer IDE. I even learnt simple ways to implement (and to script a bit of) login pages to make my visitors feel "at home" in my website. However, when I wanted to implement simple Business Logic into one of my ASP.net page, i happen to stumble upon a block.Business Logic: To have the server go through the whole table of storybook entries submitted by many users, but only pull out the storybook entry(s) that belong to the logged-on user.Hence, let me drill down to my specific questions:

I will be using VB. Coming from a JavaScript genre, my concern is: will putting the Business Logic code into a code-behind page (.vb) or dumping it onto the page itself have any errors or effects?

Sql Server 2000 Using Less Memory After More Memory Added

Aug 22, 2007

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??

thank you

Integration Services :: Excel Source On SSIS 2008 Brings Null Values

Apr 20, 2010

I'm trying to import some XLS files that I receive from some suppliers. The problem is that every time they send some columns with text values but formatted as number. When I read those columns with SSIS Excel Source, they come all with null values.

I don't want to change the columns data types every time, so I would like to know if there's a way to bypass the column types that are already there.

I tried to use both the Jet driver and the Office 12 driver. I've already used the IMEX=1 on ExtendedProperties too with no success. Is there a way to force reading the columns as text, even if they have data types assigned to them?

SSIS Project Running In Debug Mode Brings Up The Wrong Script Task In The Debugger

Mar 12, 2008

This would actually be funny if I weren't under serious time constraints right now. I have an SSIS project with several script tasks in the control flow. I put breakpoints in one of them to allow me to step through and see whats going on. However, when I start the project, the IDE brings up the script editor for a different script task. The breakpoints in this task are actually on the same line numbers as the task I need to debug but the code is all wrong. I checked the task for which the code is being displayed and there are no breakpoints there.

Thanks for the assist!

After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:

Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?

AWE/Lock Page In Memory Drawbacks? Min/Max Settings, Memory Issues

Oct 11, 2007

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.

Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.

I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.

We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.

1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?

2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?

3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?

4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.

Would Max Memory Including SSIS And SSAS Memory

Mar 27, 2008

Hello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.

My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?

Thanks,
fshguo.

Memory Issues, SSIS Package Out Of Memory Help

Dec 6, 2006

Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?

Memory Configurations For SQL Server 2005 EE X64 With SQL Server 2000 EE X32 On Windows Server EE X64 Server

Apr 20, 2007

My server is a dual AMD x64 2.19 GHz with 8 GB RAM running under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with service pack 1 installed. We have SQL 2000 32-bit Enterprise installed in the default instance. AWE is enabled using Dynamically configured SQL Server memory with 6215 MB minimum memory and 6656 maximum memory settings.

I have now installed, side-by-side, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a separate named instance. Everything is running fine but I believe SQL Server2005 could run faster and need to ensure I am giving it plenty of resources. I realize AWE is not needed with SQL Server 2005 and I have seen suggestions to grant the SQL Server account the 'lock pages in memory' rights. This box only runs the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 server databases and I would like to ensure, if possible, that each is splitting the available memory equally, at least until we can retire SQL Server 2000 next year. Any suggestions?

Without AWE enabled, max memory for SQL Server 2K5 is 4GB as for SQL Server 2000?

SQL 2012 :: Configuring Memory Per Query Option And Index Create Memory Option

Feb 10, 2015

So I started a new job recently and have noticed a few strange configurations. Typically I would never mess with min memory per query option and index create memory option configuration because i just haven't seen any need to. My typical thought is that if it isn't broke... They have been modified on every single server in my environment.

From Books Online:
• This option is an advanced option and should be changed only by an experienced database administrator or certified SQL Server technician.
• The index create memory option is self-configuring and usually works without requiring adjustment. However, if you experience difficulties creating indexes, consider increasing the value of this option from its run value.
