SQL Server Is Occupying Large Memory Space
Oct 3, 2001
In an Intranet Application using Win NT, Apache, Tomcat and SQL Server, the memory space used by SQL Server is drastically increasing and finally the system crashes. Nearly 40 people are accessing the system. The hardware configuration is P2 processor with 393 MB RAM and 2GB Virtual Memory. SQL Server,Web server and Servlet Engine are running on same machine.
Within three hours, SQL Server occupies 200M memory and the system perfomance comes down and finally the system stopes the tomcat servlet engine.
Anybody have any idea on this? We have nearly 1500 JSP pages,200 Bean files and 300 tables in SQL Server.

How do i find Total allocated space and used space of a memory optimized filegroup?
use memory_optimized_db
Go
select (SUM(size)*8.0)/1024.0 as Space,
FILEGROUP_NAME ( data_space_id ) , type_desc from sys.database_files
group by data_space_id,type_desc;
above query gives "current used size of the container " of memory optimized file group but doesn't give Total space detail.

I am new to SQL and might be missing something very easy. I have a situation where the space allocated to the transaction log of a database is extremly large (5 Gig). I can not manually reduce it. This gives me a "Error 21335: [SQL-DMO]The new DBfile size must be larger than its current size." This is a problem because the increase in size has taken all available space on the server.

When I run dbcc memorystatus on my SQL 2005 Server under Memory Manager I get:
VM Reserved 33610144
VM Committed 1478012
Doesn't the VM Reserved seem really high? Is there a way to force SQL to release the VM Reserved memory?

Hello,
I hope I am posting this in the right forum.
I am using tableDiff.exe to create a diff SQL script for a very large table (~4 million rows).
After a few minutes, I recieve a "System.OutOfMemoryException".
I have 4GB of ram on the machine executing the table diff.
The server is 32-bit, so adding ram is not an option.
I am executing the following command line:
Code Snippet
TableDiff.exe" -sourceserver "SERVER" -sourcedatabase "SourceDB" -sourcetable "Table1" -destinationserver "SERVER" -destinationdatabase "DestDB" -destinationtable "Table1" -f "C:TableDiffsTable1"
I have seen reports of other users executing tableDiff against 2million row tables.
Is there anyway to buffer tableDiff, so that I do not run out of memory on the server?
Could anything else be causing this error?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi,
I'm running an application on a server which grabs data from a database table on another server using SqlConnection, SqlDataAdapter and DataSet.
The application then updates every row in that DataSet's DataTable and the updates are saved back using DataAdapter. The code is pretty much straightforward code that you would find on MSDN documentation for using DataSets. The table contains a little over a million rows.
When I run the application, I get an error saying the Server Application is not available. Upon looking into the application event log, I get this message.
aspnet_wp.exe was recycled because memory consumption exceeded the 306 MB (60 percent of available RAM)
How do I get round this? I thought DataSets were supposed to handle large datatables comfortably without having memory issues.
-Thanks

I know the standard Microsoft recommendation is to make the pagefile at least 1.5 to 3 times larger then the amount of physical memory. However, if you're talking about a server with lots of memory such as 16GB or 32GB, would following this rule be unnecessary. With SQL 2000 running on Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 I typically see pagefile usage no more then 12% for a 2GB pagefile. Anything over 15% means I need to look at other indicators to see if a memory bottleneck has developed. If I have 32GB of physical memory and make the pagefile only 1.5 x 32GB I have a 48GB pagefile. 10% of this is 4.8GB, which I would hope I never see consumed.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Dave

I'm currently experiencing major problems with SSIS when opening and editing large .DTSX package files that contain Exec DTS 2000 Tasks which have the package data loaded internally. I have no issues if I point the task to a .DTS file, or to an actual DTS package on a SQL 2000 server - but if I load the package internally then once the underlying .DTSX file gets over around 17MB or so in size (which doesnt take long making a few edits to even fairly simple packages now and then), I start to experience major issues with VS/BIDS 2005 crashing randomly when I try to perform any action with the package (open, save etc). Things like OutOfMemory exception errors, followed by the properties of Exec DTS 2000 task being deleted, and also sometimes accompanied by messages about the application not being installed properly.
Again its ONLY when the underlying .DTSX file reaches a certain size limit, and only when I've got an Exec DTS 2000 task with the package loaded internally. I've replicated the issue using several different package files on several different machines (even on servers with lots of memory, fwiw).
Can anyone out there help me with this? SSIS - namely SSIS Exec DTS 2000 package tasks - are our lifeblood at my company and this trend of random and serious crashing on large package files is very disturbing to say the least.
thanks,
Wil

In my environment, there is maintenance plan configured on one of the server and while running DBCC checkdb on a database of size around 200GB, log file usage of tempdb is increasing and causing the maintenance job to fail.
What can I do to make the maintenance job run successfully, size of the tempdb database is only 50GB and recovery model is set to simple. It cannot be increased as the mount point on which it is residing is 50GB.

Hi
I did a load testing and found the following observations:
1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.
2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory
Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??
thank you

I am generating a Report from Sql Data Source in Sql Server 2005 and viewing the Report in Report viewer control of Visual Studio 2005.
The data in the Data Source contains string with multiple spaces (for example €œ Test String €œ) but when they get rendered in Report viewer control, multiple spaces gets converted to single space €? Test String €œ.
I tried following solutions
1) Replacing spaces with €œ €?
2) Inserting <pre> tag before the string and </pre> tag after the string (Also tried <Pre> instead of <pre>)
But in all the cases result is same. The Report Viewer control is showing €œ €? instead of space and €œ<Pre>€? tag instead of preserving spaces.
Please provide me a solution so that spaces can be preserved in Report Viewer.

Hi.. I was doing a good maintenance on my DB and my trans log LDF keep growing until 30GB but my DB data file MDF is only 2GB. I found the two following method to reduce my log size.
Method 1: I used veritas to backup log file with truncate
Method 2: I used the shrink database option in Enterprises manager to shrink it (file chosen=log , use default option)
After doing that, I found my LDF log file is still about the same size=27GB but when I see clearly, from the shrink database windows, the log spaced used reduced to only 100MB, the allocation log space is still 27GB. Why? How to make the LDF smaller to be the around the same size as the space used 100MB?

Hello,
Somebody know how to reduce the space allocated for the transaction log space for my SQL_DB ?
3700 MB allocated but only 100 MB used and 3600 MB are free !
Transaction log properties :
Automatically grow file are filled
file growth by percent = 5%
maximum file size - restrict filegrowth = 3700 MB (we can't reduce it !)
Thank you for your precious help !

I am looking to test this feature - and the "Transaction Performance Collector" has recommended me a table to port to In-Memory OLTP.Â
I have now tried the "Table Memory Optimization Advisor" tool.
After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:
Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.
Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.
I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.
We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.
1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?
2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?
3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?
4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.

Hello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.
My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?
Thanks,
fshguo.

I am running Visual Studio 2005. I have an SSIS Package which is consuming a huge amount of memory. During the execution of the package the memory keeps increasing. Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?
Thanks! Aaron B.

My server is a dual AMD x64 2.19 GHz with 8 GB RAM running under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with service pack 1 installed. We have SQL 2000 32-bit Enterprise installed in the default instance. AWE is enabled using Dynamically configured SQL Server memory with 6215 MB minimum memory and 6656 maximum memory settings.
I have now installed, side-by-side, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a separate named instance. Everything is running fine but I believe SQL Server2005 could run faster and need to ensure I am giving it plenty of resources. I realize AWE is not needed with SQL Server 2005 and I have seen suggestions to grant the SQL Server account the 'lock pages in memory' rights. This box only runs the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 server databases and I would like to ensure, if possible, that each is splitting the available memory equally, at least until we can retire SQL Server 2000 next year. Any suggestions?

I have a sql server 2005 DB.When I define a column as a nvarchar(50) and fill it with one character (for approx 10000 rows), how much space is taken physically on the HD?Also, if I then redefine the column (as it only contains 1 char) to nvarchar(1), is the physical size on the HD reduced immediately or do I have to perform some special action?
