Mapped Drives On SQL Server

Aug 6, 2001

Hi,

I mapped a drive on to my SQL Server box. It points to another server from the same domain. When I try to backup or restore a database, I can't see this mapped drive through my SQL Server. Even if I type the entire path, SQL Server wouldn't take it. I don't have a clue about why it is not working. Can anyone throw some light on this. Your help is grately appreciated.

Thanks,

Drives On Server And How To Define Raid For Them

Jan 25, 2008

Hello! I hope that I have posted in the right spot.
We are looking for advise. I know that there is no right or wrong answer. "It depends."

We currently have a server with the OS as Windows Server 2003 SP2 and SQL Server 2000 SP3. This Server has 6 physical drives; only 3 of these physical drives are being used. These 3 physical drives are 1 container with Raid 5. This 1 container is divided into 3 logical drives.

We would like to fill the other 3 physical drive slots and create another container. We were thinking of making this Raid 1.

I should put in my disclaimer that Raid 10 is out of the question and so is SAN.

Is Raid 1 the best choice? This is my first question.

Next is how should we split up the files among the containers.

For example, OS, log and swap file on container 1 with Raid 1 and datafiles on container 2 with Raid 5?

What are most people doing? Is there a standard? Can people provide examples of what they are doing or provide suggestions?

SQL Server 2008 :: Separate Drives For MDF / LDF On Same Storage?

Apr 14, 2015

I'm aware that it's best practice to separate mdf and ldf files onto separate drives.

However, I see a lot of servers where the underlying disk array is the same for drives on the server.

Is there still any performance benefit to separating mdf and ldf files in this situation?

For example, a single virtual server running SQL Server, with multiple drives attached. All of the drives are connected to a shared storage via iSCSI.There drives C:, D:, E: etc are all actually sharing the same underlying disks.

Obviously, there are some benefits from an administration perspective whereby individual drives can be reconfigured without affecting the others.

Swapping Out Drives On Our Production SQL Server This Weekend

Jul 20, 2005

All,To make a long story short, we are swapping out the "knock-off" drivesthat the NA purchased on E-Bay in one of our production SQL Servers(SQL Server 2000 Enterprise) this weekend for brand new ones (Compaq15K RPM 32GB drives). We are currently experiencing ASR almost on adaily basis and it is really causing a disription in service. SO, TheNetwork Admin ahs made this decison to replace these drives in attemptto solve this. These new drives will be imaged with ALL of the currentdata on the "knock-off' drives and will be plugged back in to thisdatabase server and brought back up .This Server also happens tocurrently be a subscriber in Merge Replication as well. Besidesstopping replication to this subscriber is there any other tasks thatI need to do or concerns that I need to be knowledgable about or lookfor when we bring this database server backup on line this weekend? Thanks Travis. :)

Backing Up The SQL Server 2000 Database Using Tape Drives

Jun 9, 2006

Dear sir/madam,

I am from NTU, Singapore and we have a windows 2003 server edition installed on a DELL server and it also runs MS SQL server 2000 for a project of ours. We have installed a HP tape drive on the dell server and it works fine if ntbackup is used at the command prompt but then the SQL enterprise manager does not recognize the tape drive and backing up of our database is of high priority as it contains sensitive information. But the tape drive is installed properly as the device manager does not show any error and ntbackup also recognizes it. I cant seem to figure out why SQL server 2000 cannot recognize it. It would be very helpful if you could kindly guide me on this issue.

Thanking you

Regards

Published SQL Server Not Showing In AD

Aug 26, 2005

I've been unable to determine why several published instances of my SQL Servers are not showing in AD. I searched under the Computer container in the domain in which the SQL Server was installed and did not see any SQL Server folder. I have used both the GUI and T-SQL to publish various instances, and it appeared to have worked since from the GUI the "Publish" option no longer worked and I recieved no error from Query Analyzer after issuing the command. The version is SQL Server 2000 8.0 running SP3a.

I also ran a VBScript to query the directory for published instances of SQL server, but did not get any results returned in the recordset. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Different Drives

Feb 6, 2008

I am trying to run a program called NVivo7, which - when I install - also requires installation of SQL Server. Because my C drive is small (and nearly full), I am trying to run NVivo7 off my D drive, though SQL seems to install on C. Is it possible, do you think, to use 2 different drives in this way, or do both the program and the Server need to be on the same one? If so, is there any way to get them both on D?

Raptor Drives?

Feb 21, 2007

So i'm not really new, but got a question. i've recently been looking to to the Western Digital Raptor Drives.

as far as performance, it's always been my understanding that the speed of the hard drive is just about always the bottle-neck of a computer. i'm currently running 2 stripped WD 500gb SATA drives for my SQL server (dual Xeon 2.8 with 2GB memory).

i'm thinking of upgarding to 4 WD Raptors (10k RPM) drives, the new 150GB models. anyone have an opionion? do you think i'll get a large performance increase?

the database that i run queries off of now is about 125 Million names, with about 80 fields in width. so it's rather large, and usally takes a fair abount of time to get my results back (we're talking anywhere from a minute, to half the day.)

do you think the raptors will slim that down significantly?

Linked SQL Server Showing Strange Behavior

Oct 1, 2004

I have two SQL Server Instances on two servers. One server is my webserver and database server and the other one is just a database server. i have an application that calls a stored procedure located on the webserver/database server that runs a query on the OTHER database server. I use linked tables in my first instance to make the call possible.

Everything was working just fine for months until the database server was restarted and the IP address was changed. The name of the database is the same however and my first SQL Server instance has no problems running queries on the other databases tables. However, when you try to run the application i get the following error:

Login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection

I have mixed mode authentication selected and my security uses the security context with username=sa and password=sa.

So here's the weird part.

The application will only run correctly when i manually run a SQL command from my webserver's SQL Analyzer on the linked SQL Server. however, after a few minutes, the same error comes back!! so as a temporary fix, i scheduled a dts job to run a simple query on the linked server every two minutes, so the application keeps working! It's almost as if the webserver's sql server forgot that the linked server is there, and by running a simple query in query analyer, the connection gets refreshed and everythings normal again - for about 3 minutes!

I am completely stumped by whats happeneing and appreciate any help. Thank you.

SQL Server 2008 :: Why User Hostnames Showing As Various

May 6, 2015

Several apps connecting to a SQL 2008 server show the users having a hostname of "Various" when doing an sp_who2 or looking at relevant DMVs.

I joined dm_exec_sessions to dm_exec_connections and was able to get the IP addresses and they resolve back to real clients. So why they'e not displayed and I see "Various" instead?

Monitor Hard Drives

Jul 30, 2001

Hi, I'm looking for a way to check the free space left on the hard drives and then if needed send an alert to notify when we need to free up some space. I played around with the performance monitor and realized I could do it that way but I think you would have to leave the performance monitor running all the time and I'm not sure if I want to do that. I also read about the xp_fixeddrives proc that displays how much free space is available but then I don't know what to do from there? Does anyone have any recommendations for the best way to do this.

Best Practice For Db Design On 2 Drives

Nov 1, 2007

I have a SQL 2000 server that is installed on a Dual Xeon server running win2k. The server has two raid 5 hard drives, a C drive and an E drive.
The C drive is currently where the operating system files are stored as well as the SQL program files. As things stand there are SQL DB and transaction logs strewn between these two drives with no particular logic.
My question is, with two drives as it stands how should I move things around to gain the best performance? For example, should I keep all my data on the E drives and all my transaction logs on the C drives with the OS and the program files?

There are about 10 Databases in use. One database run's the configuration for proprietary predictive dialing software. The other databases are calling information for each campaign we run within the dialing software.

I have enough space on both drives to accommodate the data, its performance I would like to see a difference in.

Do we need to create all the drives when installing the cluster or what is the way to add the drives later on.
