SQL Stored Procedure Design Question (querying One Vs. Multiple)

Jun 11, 2007

Hi, all.

I have a question about how you would design this.  I have to return a list of projects in a stored procedure with a statement like this:

SELECT ProjectID, ProjectName FROM PROJECTS;

This populates a DropDownList with all possible projects.  When the user selects one, I need to find out more information about that project, like this:

SELECT a.ProjectID, a.ProjectName, b.OtherStuff FROM PROJECTS a INNER JOIN OTHERSTUFF b on a.ProjectID = b.ProjectID;

In the old ASP world, we just filled the ProjectID parameter with NULL if we wanted to return all results, and the stored procedure was set up to dynamically return results based on whether that parameter was NULL or not.

I'm looking for a more elegant way to do this.  I can use two stored procedures, but I'm not sure what to name them.  Obviously, I could call one 'SelectProjects' and the other 'SelectProject', but that just doesn't seem elegant enough.  Anyone have any other ideas?

Stored Procedure Querying Another Database

Feb 6, 2007

Hello,I need to come up with a stored procedure that will allow me to readdata from another database. The database I need to read the data fromis a UniData residing on a Unix server. The stored procedure needs toreside on my sql 2005 server. The task is very simple in Access as wehave ODBC connections set up to the UniData via Informix (or IBM)UniData ODBC drivers. I can easily combine my UniData and Sql Servertables from within access. However, I can't seem to find a way toreplicate the same behavior in MS SQL Stored Procedure without the useof Access. Is that even possible? Thanks,Marek

Querying Temporary Tables From A Stored Procedure

Jun 7, 2005

What I am trying to do now is combine multiple complex queries into one table
and query it showing the results on an ASP.net page.

I am currently using SQL Server 2000 backend.  Each one of these queries are
pretty complex so I created each query as a Stored Procedure.  These queries are
dynamic by each user, so the results will never be the same globally.

What I have done so far was created a master stored procedure passing the
current user's username as a parameter.  Within the master SP (Stored Procedure)
it creates a temporary table inserts and executes multiple stored procedures and
inserts into the temporary directory.  Each of the sub stored procedures all
have the same columns.  After the insert to the temp tables, I then query the
temp table and return it to the function it was executed in code and fill it as
a System.Data.DataTable.  I then bind the DataTable to a
Repeater.DataSource.

Problem: When the page is rendered, it returns nothing.  I
tested the master SP in the data environment and it works fine.

Suspect: ASP.net when the SP is executed, it sees that the
data is a disconnected datasource?  Perhaps the session in the SQL Server when
the temp table is created isn't in SYSOBJECTS system table?

Here is an example of the code from the master SP:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.TM_getAlerts      @Username
varchar(32)ASCREATE TABLE #MyAlerts ([DATE] datetime, [TEXT]
varchar(200), [LINK] varchar(200) )
INSERT INTO #MyAlertsEXEC
TM_getAlertsNewTasks @Username
INSERT INTO #MyAlertsEXEC
TM_getAlertsLateTasks @Username
SELECT [DATE] AS 'DATE', [TEXT]
AS 'TEXT', [LINK] AS LINK FROM #MyAlerts
GO

It is a fairly simple call... but why doesn't ASP.net doesn't see it when the
the DataTable is filled.  I tried just executing one of the sub SP without
creating temporary tables and it works flawlessly.  But the query in one of the
sub SP is a normal but complex select.

Stored Procedure Design Question

Apr 21, 2008

Hey all,
I've got a design problem I'm trying to figure out.  I'm designing a search function for a table, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to design my stored procedures.  The search form allows for 72 different possibilites of returns: 3 booleans that can be combined (1 of each, 2 of 3, or all 3), and 3 dropdown lists that have 2, 3, and 4 options respectively that also can be an "any" (no preference) value.
Should I write a stored procedure to handle each of this situations (and the corresponding methods in the DAL and BLL providers)?  Or would it be easier to use a generic GetItem procedure and use rules in the business layer to sort it all out (which I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing, much less how to display in a gridview from said data)?
Any suggestions, articles, or ideas that'll help get me going on the right path would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Complex Stored Procedure Design - Help Me!!!

Jul 19, 2000

I have the following design as my starting point.
4 sql tables.
I will be doing a variety of searches against these 4 tables (525 different searches to be exact).
Which search is performed is based on table requested and the search criteria fields passed. One of the four tables will always be searched and one of the other three as well.

I have a driver stored procedure that determines which of the 3 tables to read and calls separate subordinate stored procedures for the table selected. Then it calls a stored procedure to select from the table that is always read.
I am building temporary tables to hold the results from the two tables read in each pass. Then the driver will return the results to the client.

My question is this, is there a more elegant way to determine which one of my 525 queries need to be executed than a very ugly large if/then/else, checking all of the possible combinations of parameters passed in each subordinate stored procedure?

Is there some way to create dynamic sql select statements based on the parameters passed to the subordinate stored procedures that have actual values (not null)?

Any insight would be a big help.

Design For Storing And Querying Historical Data

Aug 2, 2007

I am working on a project, which involves displaying trends of certain aggregate values over time. For example, suppose we want to display how the number of active and inactive users changed over time.

One issue is how to store historical data. First of all, should I create a separate database for each historical snapshot or should I use one database for all snapshots? Second, our database size is a couple of gigabytes and replicating the entire database on a daily basis is not feasible. An alternative solution is to back up aggregate values, but how do I back up results of aggregate queries, where the user can specify a date range in the WHERE-clause? Another solution is to create fact tables from our relational schema and back those up.

Another issue is how to query historical data. Using multiple databases to store historical snapshots makes it harder to query.

As you can see there are several design alternatives and I would like to know how this sort of problem is generally solved in the industry. Does SQL Server provide any support for solving this problem?

Thanks.

Multiple Stored Procedure...or 1 Dynamic Procedure?

Jul 3, 2007

Ok, so i have this program, and at the moment, it generates an sql statement based on an array of db fields, and an array of values...

my question is this, is there any way to create a stored procedure that has multiple dynamic colums, where the amount of colums could change based on how many are in the array, and therefore passed by parameters...

if this is possible, is it then better the pass both columns and values as parameters, (some have over 50 columns)...or just create a seperate stored procedure for each scenario?? i have no worked out how many this could be, but there is 6 different arrays of colums, 3 possible methods (update, insert and select), and 2 options for each of those 24...so possibly upto 48 stored procs...

this post has just realised how deep in im getting. i might just leave it as it is, and have it done in my application...

but my original question stands, is there any way to add a dynamic colums to a stored proc, but there could be a different number of colums to update or insert into, depending on an array??

Cheers,
Justin

Querying Multiple Databases

Feb 7, 2007

Hey there!
I'm not sure how to explain this but here goes...
I'm a bit stuck, a new project that's come about "requires" me to query multiple databases as if they were tables.
1 Oracle database which stores information on our staff (this database is a part of some MIS software and can't be changed in any way)
1 SQL Server 2005 database which stores information on staff sickness
Basically say theres 1 table in each database
Oracle DB
People

Person_Code
Forename
Surname
SQL DB
Sickness

Person_Code
Daydate
Lets say the query I want to perform is to select all the records from sickness where person code is 22334 and also get their name from the other db, so the output may look like
22334 Dann Rees 01/01/2007
22334 Dann Rees 03/01/2007
22334 Dann Rees 10/02/2007
Now I realise I can write a quick function to pull the information but this is just a basic example. Effectivley what I "need" is to be able to query sickness while sub querying people to get the names, or some kind of pass through query?
Please remember this is just a very simple example and the "actual" queries will be far more complicated, for instance finding all the employees of a certain department who is male and was sick in January. All the data for that example is stored in people (oracle) except for the dates which is stores in sick (SQL 2005). Now these are easy enough if they were tables in 1 database....but their not, their tables in 2 databases, and theres nothing I can do to change that :(
All help appreciated as this is becoming very urgent.
Many thanks
Dann
(I couldnt post this in the General data access forum for some reason)

Querying With 1, Or 2, Or Multiple Parameters

Mar 4, 2007

Hi all. I have the problem on query.
This is my query.

select D.fullname, P.religion, E.empno from pspersonaldata as P
inner join hremployees as E on P.dcno = E.empdcno
inner join psdatacenter as D on D.dcno = E.empdcno
where P.religion in ('Born Again','Baptist', 'Catholic')

How could I make a query that returns a result for either "Born Again, Baptist, or Catholic". The parameter would depend on the input of the user depending on how many religion the user inputed.
If the user inputed Born Again and Baptist, the result is the employees that have a religion of Born Again and Baptist.

Querying Multiple Databases

Sep 21, 2006

Hello,

This is probably a simple solution but I'm a bit confused about which flows to use.

I have two databases on different servers that contain the same information but for the appropriate server.  I want to retrieve data from each of the servers using a "select" statement.

Would I use a ForLoop and change the connection in a Script Task and then execute the SQL statement?  Or can a ForEach Loop be used, but I'm not sure which type of enumerator.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Stored Procedure Using Multiple Databases

Sep 14, 2006

Ok, this is kind of an odd problem.  Back in June we were having problems with our call manager software, and they decided to have it just start usinga new database.  Now I'm trying to generate some reports which need to cover both the old call stats and the new, so that means the stored procedure builds a temp table and populates it from both databases. This works perfectly fine in Management Studio, and when being called from Excel. However when I try to call it from an ASP.NET web app using SqlCommand.ExecuteReader(), I only get results from the new database! What on earth could cause that?

Multiple Tasks In Stored Procedure

Feb 5, 2008

I have put together the stored-procedure below to carry out update, delete and insert queries in one visit. The code has been pieced together from the pages listed at the bottom. I pass the procedure three XML strings and after testing it a few times it seems to work fine. I’m fairly new to stored procedures though, so I was hoping someone would answer these questions:
1. Is this an acceptable way to do this? Can you foresee any problems?2. I want to make this an ‘all-or-nothing’ event, i.e. if any part of the procedure fails, it must all fail. How would I achieve that?3. I want to know in my calling code what the result is. I’ve used output parameters before, but I’m unsure how to combine one with 2 above.
Sorry this is a long script, but I’ve removed most of the column names and values to shorten it. Thanks in advance.CREATE PROCEDURE amendPageRecords

Multiple Keywords In Stored Procedure

Jan 10, 2004

Hi,
I'm trying to move an asp site from an Access DB to SQL Server.
The site features a search system which allows multiple keywords to be used in up to three fields.

The way I used to manage this was very similar to how it is described below (taken from http://www.planet-source-code.com/vb/scripts/ShowCode.asp?lngWId=4&txtCodeId=6701):

"So you're replacing all of the middle spaces with a SQL 'and' statement. In plain English, if your search phrase is "print bug", this now becomes "'%print%' AND field LIKE '%bug%'" when you concatenate the leading and trailing %'s and quotes (this is for Microsoft Access drivers, other drivers may use different wildcards)--so just append this phrase to the "WHERE field LIKE " phrase, and you're in business."

The trouble I'm having is that the search string is sitting in a Stored Procedure. How can I dynamically append to the search string in this case?

If it isn't possible, how can I go about this?

Cheers all.

Stored Procedure For Multiple Inserts

Feb 24, 2008

Hello all,

I'm working on a project for fun with some friends and have run into an issue with stored procedures. I've dealt with SQL quite a bit at my current job, but always from the perspective of somebody querying the database. The database was always managed by someone else and I never had to worry about the underlying code. Now, with my own project at home, I'm trying to deal with a situation and would like to use one, but I'm not sure if it is the best option and if so, exactly how to go about it.

Imagine a site that tracks movies. I have 3 tables:

Movies ( MovieID, Title, DirectorID, ActorID )
Actors ( ActorID, Name )
Director (DirectorID, Name)

This is an overly simple example, but it gets to the heart of my problem.

Okay, now what I'm wanting to do is to be able to write a procedure that would let me create my entries from just one call -- for instance

create_movie( 'Super Movie', 'directorJoe', 'actorJohn' )

that would do the following things:
-Look and see if the given director and actor already exist (from previous films)
-If they do, grab their ID values and use those in the new movie entry
-If they do not, create new entries and get THOSE ID values to use in the new movie entry

Can this be done in a stored procedure (I'm pretty sure it can be) and what sort of commands should I look into -- I'm not looking for a complete solution, cause I want to learn, but I am having trouble finding examples that fit my scenario.

Thanks.
