SQL Tools :: Cannot See A Database In List From Server Management Studio
Sep 24, 2015
I can see a database file in the Data folder which is used by the "sqlservr.exe" process (detected this using Process Explorer) but I cannot a see a database in the list in SQL Server Management Studio.I am sysadmin on the server (also tried with the "sa" account).tried running "USING" statement with no luck.Is there a system view which tells the relationgship between data files and databases?
In SSMS, I connect Object Explorer to a partially contained database using a contained user login with password. This user has a database role of dbdatareader. When I try to expand the Tables in the database, I get the error:Â
The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'extended_properties', database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 229)
Is there a way to set permissions for the contained user so that this could be done?
I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.
I just installed Management Studio 2016 CP1. Unfortunately, the Database Diagrams branch does not show-up when I expand the individual databases in Object Explorer. Interestingly, they show-up in Management Studio 2008
backup database PPLicense to disk = 'D:License.bak'
I have run this 5 times. If I know run this command:
restore headeronly from disk = 'D:License.bak'
I can see 5 entries returned this all looks good. In SQL Management studio I try and restore this database by selecting the file. The Restore Database dialog only shows the last backup set position i.e. position 5 and now the 4 before it. Why is this not showing the 4 previous backups?
I am using SQL Server 2012 SP 2 (Version 11.0.3460).
I've installed both the AW db and dw off the MS download. I see the db in the directory I use for other databases, the dw doesnt seem to want to go where I tell it. Anyway, when I connect to my instance of sql (developer's) I dont see the AW db.
I have SQL Server set up on a server and I can't see the Agent in Management Studio. When I check the services it says it is there and started.I have the Enterprise edition installed.it doesn't show when I am on the server itself through Management Studio, however, on my local pc, when I connect to the server through Management Studio, I can see the Agent through there and I have jobs there that run successfully and everything. Its just when I log directly on the box and load up Management Studio.
We have Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Version 10.50.2500.0.I change to "Results To Text", and "Display Results in a Separate Tab". Then I restart SQL Server Management Studio; and my settings are gone.Is there a way to save my settings?
I downloaded and performed a full install of SQL Server Express 2008 Nov CTP. It was installed on a fresh installation of Windows Vista Enterprise x64.
During setup, I checked the 'Client Tools' box which has the description: "Includes management and development tools: SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Profiler, and Database Engine Tuning Advisor"
The installation ran fine with no errors. After install I looked for the Management Studio but couldnt find it anywhere. No SQL Server Profiler or Database Tuning Advisor either. The only tool that appears to have installed is the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
If I check my Start Menu, the only 2008 items that exist are Microsoft SQL Server 2008 >
Configuration Tools >
SQL Server Configuration Manager SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting SQL Server Installation Center

Hopefully a simple question: Is it possible to use Maintenance Plans created on SQL Server Management Studio (installed as part of an instance of SQL Server 2005 Standard Ed.) to back up databases running on an instance of SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services? I don't need directions, just whether or not it is permitted.
I've been able to create the plans including establishing connections to from SSMS to the the SQL Express instance, but they keep erroring out. I just need to know if this is actually permitted since Maintenance Plans are not available on Management Studio Express Edition.
I am using SQL Server Express 2008 Management Studio & in the databases list are some databases that are non existent (have been deleted in Windows Explorer). How do I remove them as trying to delete when logging in using Windows authentication fails?
Hi, I am an novice to SQL field, seeking for tools or add-ing to enchance sql studio management, especially for code completion and real-time prompt of erroneous syntax. More concretely, could you kindly list great third-party tools you have used, and feel worth evaluating. Reagrds, Ricky/
This is not the first install for me but i've noticed that after installing sql server standard 2005 and then i put on sp2 i cannot find my management studio. i don't think that is was ever installed although i did choose to install it. now when i try to install the tools i'm getting the error that they already exist. arghhhh... ? I've looke to uninstall them through the "add or remove programs" but thats a no-go. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks.
(just to add to this my sql database resides on another server so I copied the contents of the dvd over to the server)
Hello, How do I clear the Recently Used Server list in SQL Server Management Studio? I am talking about the "Server Name" field that is part of the "Connect To Server" drop down when you initially open SQL Server Management Studio. Thanks.
I've accidentally done something to my install of Management Studio that is making query editing very difficult. I must have used a weird key combination to enable some feature that is now opening an Intellisense like window with suggested keywords or column names. I've tried every option I can find to disable this and even tried all the <ctrl> key combinations from A-Z to try to turn this off. How to have the editor revert to the "default" behavior as installed?
I've received several replies about disabling Intellisense or changing the Intellisense options and I've already done this to no effect. I've also not installed any 3rd party tools. I was editing queries when the problem began and I think I had hit a <ctrl> or <alt> key combination key that started this problem.
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason
After opening Management Studio and doing some editing it is possible to copy/paste things in the query editor. After a while (working in another app) I come back to Management Studio and I can't copy/paste anything anymore. If I try to copy from the results window I get an error message that the clipboard operation did not succeed. If I try to copy from the query editor window it just doesn't copy. I can copy/paste in other apps without a problem. Â It is not the clipboard getting full but I can't rule out much else.
How do i get the database that i am using in visual studio into my SQL server management studio? i need to create some scripts to create stored procedures on a live server.
I currently can't connecto to my database in SQL Server 2005 (enterprise) but as soon as I try to use any functions, I get cryptic errors found below. I am about to pull my hair out. Everything was working fine for around 4 days and now everything just blows up. I've tried using both sql authentification and also windows:

I recently installed the express edition of sql server express, I installed with all the default options and choose windows authorisation for login. I have tried to attach a database in studio mangement and it threw an exception about security and connection error, I presume I have no priviledges, but I have tried to grant myself rights and basically tried everything but I cant seem to get anywhere with it, would apprechiate some advise on this subject, and what steps I should take to setup and use and have complete rights to the database thanks in advance
HiI am using SQL Server Management Studio Express to make my databases but I noticed if I make my database in Visual studios and go new Item and make a new database I see it in app_data folder and server express tab and if I make it in SQL Server Management Studio Express I only see it in the server explorer. So if I have to move my files to another computer how do I move my database easly with SQL Server Management Studio Express? Since when you make it with the visual studio the file gets stored with all the other files of your project so if you move it all to another computer you prob won't run into a problem. So how do I make it that so I can do everything in SQL Server Management Studio Express(since I like working in it) then export it into a file that I can then go into my app_data folder and add it is an exist item? Thanks
Hello I need to create a sql server 2005 database in my folder app_data, but i can't do it with the sql server management studio. I get an error. I can only create a database in my C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData . I cannot create the database in other folder. Thank you
How do I set up a database snapshot and backup the database for Windows Server Update Services 3.0, that uses the "desktop" version of SQL server on the same server running Widows Server 2003? There does not seem to be a "Management Plans" sub-folder under the "management" folder in the Management Studio Express console- so that's probably my first request- how do I establish a "Management Plans" subfolder, then how do I (step-by-step) set up a backup of the SUSDB?
I am having a problem Attaching, well actually not being able to see a database when attempting to attach it. I suspect this is more of a security issue rather than a problem with Management Studio, but I can't figure out what is happening.
If I copy a database to Documents and SettingsAll Users... and attempt to attach I can see the file in the selection tree. This also is the case if I copy it to Documents and SettingsDefault User... But if I copy it to Documents and SettingsADynarski... which is the account I normally log into, when I expand the folder in the selection tree, nothing is visible. And the same thing occurs if I copy the file to Documents and SettingsGuest...
I've looked at the security settings and everything appears to be normal. This is on a box with XP Home and SQL Server Express. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?
I'am a student and I'am using the Express version of the SQL sever Management Studio. The question that I have is: Can I create a SQL database on my local computer and use this database on a other computer? So I create a database on a laptop and want to export/import this on a desktop.
If this is possible can somebody sent met a tutorial ore something.
I have created a database under management studio and i want it to be connected in visual studio but it failed the error msgs said that the database can't be connected coz the database with same name exits but that is not true
Quick question... I've created my DB in MSSQLSMS, then attempted to created a stored procedure for it. The code itself is fine, I just need to know how to actually attach it so that it appears in the "Stored Procedures" section of my Database.
I have Right Clicked on Stored Procedures > New Stored Procedure... > Edited as required > Save
When I attempt to save it, it prompts me for a file. That's fine, did that - but I can't see ANY way to actually attach this to the DB.
I just found out the name of AdventureWorksLT is in my SQL Server Server Management Studio Express, but the content of AdventureWorksLT database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express is gone. I saved the backup file of the AdventureWorksLT database in my C:Program filesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLackup folder. How can I backup the AdventureWorksLT database to SQL Server Management Studio Express again? Please help and advise.
