SQL Tools :: Firewall Blocking Access To 2nd Instance Of Server
Jun 19, 2015
I have trying to access a 2nd SQL Server instances running on my WHS 2011 server from my Windows 8.1 Pro client.
The first SQL Server instance I installed is SQL Server 2014 Developer. This has been in place for many months and access from my client pc is not a problem. The Developer instance was installed using standard settings so uses TCP port 1433 and I have verified this by checking the firewall rules. This instance name is <SERVERNAME>
As I want to host a personal website on my server I installed SQL Server 2014 Express as a 2nd instance on my WHS 2011 box for website database purposes. After this installation both instances are accessible via Management Console on the WHS 2011 box.Â
The second instance is named as <SERVERNAME>SQLEXPRESS.
However, I am unable to access the SQLEXPRESS instance using Management Console on my client pc. I know it is a firewall issue as when I turn off the firewall on the WHS 2011 box I can connect successfully. The errors reported have resulted in my trying many things to resolve the problem but none have worked, e.g.
Use the default SQLEXPRESS instance to listen on all TCP ports (default installation option). I checked the necessary firewall rules were set up correctly and they were, i.e. UDP ANY and TCP ANY for the SQLEXPRESS sqlservr.exe file.
Change the default SQLEXPRESS instance to list on a specific TCP port, e.g. 19344
Create an ALIAS for the SQLEXPRESS installation
The instance is definitely set up for Remote Access and is not Hidden.
Are there any other firewall rules I need to apply?
I am currently running sql 2005 express on a W2k3 server, 4G ram. I would also like to install a named instance of SQL 2005 Developer Edition on this machine. Is this ok to do? I am assuming that I can access all of the instances through the SQL Server Management Studio, is that correct?
This is the code I have been using to connect to my default instance for 18 months. A recent upgrade to Windows Live onecare now prevents me connecting to the server from the same machine. The following error message is generated:-

If I turn off the onecare firewall I can connect as normal, but this is not a desired option. I have tried enabling port 1433 on the firewall, this does not work either. Any help greatly appreciated, onecare support seems reluctant to help.
I am connecting to several SQL 2000 servers on another LAN from my workstation and I have to go through a firewall.
I got the firewall people to open port 1433 and was then able to connect any server with a default instance using Query Anlyzer and the IP address of the Server.
When I try to connect from my workstation to a server with a named instance I am being blocked by the firewall before it gets to the server.
I went into Client Network Utility on my workstation and removed named pipes which only left Tcpip using port 1433.
Fire wall is now blocking “nbname UDP 137”.
Is there a setting somewhere on my workstation that I can force the traffic to the named instance to use Tcpip through port 1433.
We have an internal sql 2000 server that acts as the database backend for our Internet presence. I believe that the sql server can be accessed because of a firewall "exception" (?) that allows the external web server to talk to the sql server using a specific IP address and port (namely that of the sql server.)
Now we need to install a sql 2005 instance on the same box which needs to act as an Internet backend. The sql browser service will resolve all client requests to the default or named instance. But I read that the sql browser service assigns a "dynamic" port to the Instance! If that is the case, it's unlikely that, unless the firewall has all ports open for outgoing traffic, that the sql instance will be able to communicate with the web server.
My conclusion:
Leave the default instance (sql 2000) port at its current value; assign the named instance an unused port; Make sure the sql browser is running on the box! Tell the firewall guys to make an exception for the new port.
Someone please help me before I loose all of my hair  !!!
I have two machines, a Windows Server 2003 machine running an SQL Server Standard Edition database instance and client tools (Enterprize Manager etc.), and a workstation PC running Windows XP SP2 which has just the SQL Server client tools (not an actual DB instance).
I'm trying to use the Enterprize Manager client tool on my WinXP machine to remotely connect to the server instance on the server PC (via 'New SQL Server Registration' option). Everytime I do this I get the following error message:
Login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server Connection.
Now I've tried using different usernames and passwords. I have login details for my SQL Server set to use Windows Login rather then SQL Server login, so I tried remotely connecting with the username and password for the server PC, tried 'sa' with server password, even tried setting up a new user on the server and logging in from the client with that, no luck. I've opened up correct ports 1433 on both PCs, even disabled the windows firewalls algother. Both server and client have SP3a installed, WinServer2003 has SP1 and XP SP2.
So I'm at a loss to how to remotely connect to my SQL Server. FYI I know the server itself is working fine because I can connect to it using Enterprize Manager/Query Analyser on the local machine. Any ideas? Many thanks for your help!
We install SQL Express 2005 with a custom named instance. Since a named instance uses dynamic ports, how can I add this named instance to the Windows Firewall exception list? Previously with MSDE 2000 we installed as default, then I added port 1433 to the Firewall exception list.
Is there a way to install SQL Express to a static port (programmatically)? Or, is there a better method, like adding the SQL custom named instance service to the firewall exception list?
I have a Windows Server 2003 with SQL Server 2005. I´ve configured the following itens to allow remote connecitions:
[code] WORKAROUND Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. But, when the Windows firewal on the server is "On", remote connections are not allowed, despite I´ve configured the Exceptions on the firewall.
I am new to internet development and would like some advice on the technology used to access a SQL database that sits on a network behind a firewall.
** ASP .NET Page ** -> ** Web Server ** -> ** FIREWALL ** -> ** SQL **
So to give an example; from an ASP .NET page on the internet, I would like to populate a DataGrid with the contents of a single table from a SQL database. The SQL database is sitting on our company network behind a firewall.
Could someone please explain / point me in the right direction in how the ASP .NET page / Web Server can securely access the SQL database.
I am facing a strange issue with accessing data from SQL server 2000. We are using SQL Server authentication for connecting to SQL Server 2000 and ADO .Net SQL client in the application. The problem here is, we have databases installed in one of the servers in some other office location that is in different state but on same domain. We do development from two locations that is one from Virtual Machines hosted on servers where Database Servers are located and on our local desktops in India.
Now when I developed a test client in Virtual Machines which will call a web service to get datasetof some data and show them in DataGrid. When I run the test client in debug mode from Visual Studio 2003, then I am getting data in the DataGrid. Even when I just run the exe from Virtual Machine still I am getting data.
But when I copy debug folder of the test client to the local desktop in India and when I run the Test client I am not getting any data loaded on to the DataGrid. I am getting an empty dataset when I am running from the local desktop.
Also I have converted the VS2003 project to VS2005 and when I run the application from Local Desktop then I am getting the data loaded fine. I could not understand what is the problem, what is the difference between accessing data from VS2003 and VS2005 using webservice.
Is this a firewall issue or I am missing any thing here. The webservice method I am calling to get data is actually returning dataset when I am calling this method directly from the browser also and even through application in virtual machine.
I am still not able to come to terms with this problem. This is severely affecting our deployment. Please help us resolve this problem. Please let me know if you need more information.
I would like to be able to view the complete SQL command that is sent from a Microsoft Access query which has linked SQL Server tables through ODBC, and the query also has some VBA functions manipulating and filtering data.I tried using the SQL Profiler to view the sql command send to SQL Server but all I see is the simple query format and some of the fields. I don't see the fields that have a VBA function such as trim(fieldname) etc in the column. And If I use a VBA fucntion in the Criteria then nothing shows up in SQL Profiled under the TextData column. How can I see the complete SQL command sent to SQL Server?
I have a new Wireless G router configured by a client for their VPN. They said to hook it up to my existing router. It works great if I try to connect to something on the VPN, Informix, SQL no problem.
I have my own SQL 2k on the same network locally. I can access the server with Maping tools but I can not get an ODBC connection to work either using Windows Authentication or SQL authentication. Tried my old router and it worked fine.
I figured it would not work while I was connected to the VPN, but thought I should be able to access SQL server when not on the VPN. Is this a port issue? Never had to deal with this.
I am trying to transfer all jobs from one instance to another by using data tools. However, once i tried to make smo connection i am getting this error;
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server.
In order to solve this issue i have tried these solutions;
1. SQL Server should be up and running. (OK) 2. Enable TCP/IP in SQL Server Configuration (OK) 3. Open Port in Windows Firewall (FW ACCEPTS ALL LOCAL PORTS) 4. Enable Remote Connection (CHECK OUT THE sp_configure SETTINGS, i even right-click instance then see from properties ) 5. Enable SQL Server Browser Service (sql server browser has been restarted) 6. Create exception of sqlbrowser.exe in Firewall (FW ACCEPTS ALL PROGRAMS) 7. I tried windows and sql authentication which has sysadmin role 8. INSTANCE name is also chekced millions of times
I have installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on a W2K3 server that already has a SQL Server 2000 default instance installed. The installation appears to be a success. The problem is that having installed the client tools, and trying to connect, I get the following error message in a dialog:
"Cannot connect server SERVERNAMEINSTANCENAME An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)"
The funny thing is that I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 default instance that is on that server. So it's obviously not a connection problem per se at my end i.e. bad dns etc which might stop me resolving the server name.
Googling for this error text gives the following advice on various web sites:
1. Check that the remote server allows connections.
It does, as other colleagues in my team have successfully installed the tools and can connect with no problems.
2. Check that the SQL Browser service is running.
It is, as without this running, my colleagues would not be able to connect either.
3. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager. Select "SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration | Protocols for MSSQLSERVER" then enable the protocols you need.
The required protocol (TCP/IP) is enabled. Named pipes is also enabled, although I don't think that we're using that. And shared memory is also enabled by default.
4. Open the firewall and add exceptions for sqlbrowser.exe or UDP port 1434
There is no firewall running at either end of the connection and as mentioned I can connect to the SS2K default instance.
5. Make sure that the server machine is reachable.
I can connect to the SS2K default instance so it must be reachable. I can't see that I would need to change any configuration settings as my colleagues are using exactly the same default settings for their connections and they work fine.
The only thing that I have done differently is that I originally installed the client tools using someone else's privileged account as I didn't have admin rights on my box. The client tools didn't work, so I got admin rights to my box, uninstalled the client tools and then reinstalled them using my account. Still no luck. Not sure if something is still hanging around after the uninstallation that would cause me a problem.
To help, I've also filled out the following questionnaire:

we intalled sqlexpress on a server 2003 ...work well... named server <deval-sqlexpr> instance name of sql is <sqlexpress> we changed the server name to <apps-ii> after that we cannot access the sql instance <deval-sqlexprsqlexpress> we cannot remove (with add and remove program) that unsuable instance.
we have an instance name <apss-iisqlexpress1> and its works well
we cannot change the server name back to <deval-sqlexpr> ...the server is now the DC....
QUESTION:
is it possible to remove and clean out that instance from the server.
We have allowed one of our clients to create views in our .net /sql application so they can build reports using MS Access. They have been doing so successfully for years. However lately they are experiencing Timeout Expired messages when in the actual web application. I have confirmed that several of the views when opened in Access do cause blocking, the locks are promptly realeased when the the access odbc of the sql view is closed.
When the views are opened in SQL query analyzer, there is no sql blocking.
Would this be related to how the tables are linked?
First time I've tried doing this - I have SQL Server 2012 installed on my local machine with an instance running (which was set up under an administrator account, not mine, which has no admin rights), and I'm trying to create a linked table from Access (also on the local machine) to a table on the server.
I tried creating a DSN using Windows Authentication, using the server name which is the same as my computer name, and got the error "Error 18452, Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication".
I then created a SQL authentication user ID and password, and tried the same thing using that instead, and got "Login failed for user <myusername>"
Is there some particular setting on the local instance I need to change to allow this kind of connection, or do I need to use something other than the server name to connect, such as an IP address? Remember that I have no admin access on this machine so any solution would have to avoid requiring that.
I am creating a SQL Named instance as a testing environment. This instance is on the same physical box as my Development environment, both are SQL 2005 standard edition. From the server in Management Studio, I can load, and interact with both instances. From a remote connection (e.g., my pc) I cannot access the named instance. I am getting the following:
Connect to Server
X Cannot connect to <server><named instance>
Additional Information
An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Sever 2006, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server) I have checked, and rechecked the server settings for this named instance, and remote connections are set to "allow" I have enabled TCPIP and Named Pipes prototocals, and have ensured that my firewall is allowing the "listenting port" for the named instance, and have even tried turning off my XP firewall during testing. I am sure that I have probably missed something, and have searched the community but only have been able to find resolutions that I have already tried. Is there more? Thanks in advance for any help and guidance you can provide.
We are using MS SQL Server 2008. I am running a batch job which deletes 21 days older records(6-7 million records). But daily we have transaction is going on in the database. When the delete occurs, all the insert statements got blocked and waits till the delete statement to complete. May I know why the blocking occurs?Â
I try to connect from a pc to a SQL Server on another pc. Both pc’s are in a workgroup. I want to connect from a Windows Forms application to a named instance on the other computer. By now I have been able to connect from one pc to SQL Server on the other with tcp:smurfin, 52782.
I want to be able to use servernameinstancename (instead of portnumber) to make a connection in a Windows Forms application.
I’ve checked / tried te following:
•In the properties of the instance, tab Connections, the option Allow Remote Connections is enabled •In Configuration Manager: TCP is enabled •The service SQL Server Browser is started •On the tab IPAddresses, in the section IPAll, there is NO portnumber for TCP Port. And TCP Dynamic Ports has the nummer 52782 •I have created un inbound rule for port 52782 and also for 1434 (SQL Server Browser). And to be on the save side: a rule for 1433 as well. •Restarted the service
If I run the following code in SQL Server, that same port number (52782) is returned:
EXEC xp_ReadErrorLog 0, 1, N'Server is listening on', N'any', NULL, NULL, 'DESC' GO SELECT local_tcp_port FROM sys.dm_exec_connections WHERE session_id = @@SPID
Login failed for user 'TOSHIBA-USERASPNET' I know that the file persmission for the web application have to include aspnet, so i keep resetting the folder permission for aspnet in file manager, but the login failed keeps coming back every day or two problem is after working with VS05 Pro, SQL Server Management Studio CTP, somehow the aspnet persmission get changed, use alot of sqldatasource wizards and often there is a conflict/hang between the datasource wizard and the need to have the mdf in a dettached state within VS server explorer, not sure but the procedure to fix this seems to be to reboot, detach and re-attach the mdf in the Sql server Studio tool, re-apply the aspnet file permission on the web app folders (wonder should i be doing this in IIS instead), make sure the mdf within server explorer is detached, the it works anyway, getting real tired of the resulting delays and design time derailment, clues greatly appreciated, thanks sometimes i can use View in Browser when in VS05 form view and i wont get the aspnet folder permission error and other times i do. last thing, is it a bad idea to give aspnet full permission for the entire web applicaiton??
My ISP recently had me reset my TCP/IP stack. After that, Norton PersonalFirewall prompted me twice that SQL Server was trying to access theInternet. Both times I responded to allow it to and to always use thataction. Now I am not able to use SQL Server with NPF enabled. If I disableNPF, SQL Server works fine.I am using the desktop edition of SQL Server 7, on a standalone PC, notconnected to a server. I have been using SQL Server and NPF together forover a year. Now, since my TCP/IP stack was reset, NPF interferes with SQLServer.Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks,Neil
I'm a relative newbie to SQL Server so pardon me if this is dumb. However....
Microsoft provides a visual database tool for designing a query. The only way I know of firing up this utility is from EM. To get to it you must drill down to the table level and say "Open Table...Query" to get to it. Is there an easier way to get to this? Or am I missing something? Doesn't it make sense that when you are in Query Analyzer that you should be able to easily go into the Visual Query Designer since that's all your doing in QA is designing queries??? A toolbar button would be nice. Maybe I haven't worked with it enough and there is a way. Any help is appreciated. -Mike
I got a big Access file (1 400 tables) to convert to SQL and I wouldlike to be provided with some automated tools, except upsizing wizardand DTS, to convert it on my own.I got a lot of forms and query to convert too.Can someday provide me with at least one tool name ?Thanks,Guy
I am trying to connect to SQL Server 7.0 from a web server. The web server is outside our firewall, SQL Server is inside the firewall. I want to use a multiprotocol connection so I can encrypt it. We have port 1433 open on our firewall for TCP/IP from SQL Server. When I connect with just TCP/IP it works. When I switch to multiprotocol it fails with error code 1701. I can connect to the SQL Server box from inside the firewall using multiprotocol. My theory is that when you use multiprotocol you are using another port than 1433. Is this the answer?
I have a simple asp page that queries a database inside our firewall. It works fine from the inside, and only uses port 1433. But if i put it out on our web server it won't connect and tries to use ports 139 and 445. Has anybody ran across this before?
Hello,We use Informix and MySQL on linux/unix to drive our web application.SQL*Server is used only for backend enterprise applications within thefirewall. I am trying to get the management to use SQL*Server outside thefirewall. They tell me there are security issues with Microsoft products, including SQL*Server, that make it vulnerable to attacks outside thefirewall. Can someone please point me to white papers/documentation thatsuggests how SQL*Server can be used securely outside the firewall? I thinkif I put SQL*server on it's own box and open it up only to the applicationson our web servers, we should be secure. However, I need hard evidence.Thanks.- Rajesh
