Backup Strategy - SQL2005 Tools Versus 3rd Party Tools

Jun 1, 2007

I am running SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise under Windows 2003 x64 Enterprise. My current backup strategy uses T-SQL jobs run by SQL Agent (writes out *.bak files) and then I have an Integration Services job that copies the *.bak files to our NAS device. I have performed a restore without issue. The jobs are all automated every four hours via SQL Agent. Is this a sound strategy or are there additional benefits to using 3rd party tools? If so, what are the advantages and which tool provides them?

Design Tools / Sql Server Mgt Tools Cause Login Fail

Sep 20, 2007

Login failed for user 'TOSHIBA-USERASPNET'
I know that the file persmission for the web application have to include aspnet, so i keep resetting the folder permission for aspnet in file manager, but the login failed keeps coming back every day or two
problem is after working with VS05 Pro, SQL Server Management Studio CTP, somehow the aspnet persmission get changed, use alot of sqldatasource wizards and often there is a conflict/hang between the datasource wizard and the need to have the mdf in a dettached state within VS server explorer,
not sure but the procedure to fix this seems to be to reboot, detach and re-attach the mdf in the Sql server Studio tool, re-apply the aspnet file permission on the web app folders (wonder should i be doing this in IIS instead), make sure the mdf within server explorer is detached, the it works
anyway, getting real tired of the resulting delays and design time derailment, clues greatly appreciated, thanks
sometimes i can use View in Browser when in VS05 form view and i wont get the aspnet folder permission error and other times i do.
last thing, is it a bad idea to give aspnet full permission for the entire web applicaiton??

SQL Tools :: Tools To Determine Version From BAK File

Apr 24, 2014

Is there - apart from the notorious RESTORE HEADERONLY - an tool which is able to tell which SQL Server version created a specific BAK file? I'm looking for a tool that can be used w/o an available/running SQL Server installation.

Alternatively, is there any documentation about what is read with RESTORE HEADERONLY so I could write a tool myself?

Where would I find the version "bytes" in a BAK file?

Scale Out Web Farm 401.1 - Unauthorized

Jan 18, 2008

Our topology:
Internal corporate network domain utilizing Integrated Windows Authentication between local workstations and the web and database servers. (domain similiar to: http://reports.ourdomain.com)

Machine #1: Windows 2003 Server w/SQL Server 2005 (SP2 and hotfixes applied) running SSRS.
Machine #2: Windows 2003 Server w/SSRS only. (pointing to the SQL DB on Machine #1)
Machine #3: Windows 2003 Server w/SSRS only. (pointing to the SQL DB on Machine #1)
Device #1: Arrowpoint load balancer for Machines #2 & #3 (w/sticky sessions).

We recently added 2 web servers and configured them to load balance the web requests to a seperate SQL Server machine. (the load balancing is done thru an Arrowpoint device not Microsoft NLB)

The installation of reporting services (on Machine #2 & #3) went smoothly and the configuration was a breeze. But we could not access the "http://reports.ourdomain.com/Reports" directory for reporting services on the 2 web server machines. We received the "401.1 - Unauthorized" http error.

Since we were using a domain name to access the report server we made sure to update the <URL> tag in the config files.

File location 1:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2Reporting ServicesReportManagerRSWebApplication.config

<ReportServerUrl>http://reports.ourdomain.com/ReportServer</ReportServerUrl>

File location 2:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2Reporting ServicesReportServer
sreportserver.config

<UrlRoot>http://reports.ourdomain.com/reportserver</UrlRoot>

We still received the error, so then we added a couple of entries to the HOSTS file on each web server:
File location -->
C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetcHOSTS

In order for the load balancers to "see" themselves from the domain reference we had to update the HOSTS file
on each web server to have the domain name "reports.ourdomain.com" point to the IP Address of the specific web server.
(we also added the IP of Machine #1 just to be safe):

MACHINE #2's HOSTS file:
127.0.0.1 localhost
10.10.0.1 Machine1
10.10.0.2 reports.ourdomain.com #IP of Machine2

MACHINE #3's HOSTS file:
127.0.0.1 localhost
10.10.0.1 Machine1
10.10.0.3 reports.ourdomain.com #IP of Machine3

Then the web servers were able to authenticate the users using IWA and NTLM
and we could access the report servers normally. Even the the scheduled reports
were being load balanced and emailed from the web servers which we didn't
expect to happen. (pretty cool!)

I hope this helps someone else as it tooks us about 4 days to figure this out.

Reporting Services :: Adding (new) Child Domain Users To SSRS As System Users?

Jul 28, 2015

We have an existing SSRS server, and have just created a new child domain. We'll be migrating users from the parent to the child, and want to add the users of that new domain with access to SSRS. In the parent domain they are able to access, but after migration with the child domain account, they cannot.

I have added the group CHILDDomain Users with a system user role on SSRS, and PARENTDomain Users was already there.

Is there any additional step I should/could take to get this active?

Security Holes --- Denying Unauthorized Access

Apr 6, 2000

I am using mixed security on the SQL server and have an NT group 'NT_GROUP'.
The login for 'NT_GROUP' has been added to SQL server and has been explicitly granted access to only one database.

Using access database project (ADP), a user in the group is able to gain access to other databases (master, tempdb, msdb, etc.) as well.

It is very important to be able to prevent this access.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Request Failed With HTTP Status 401: Unauthorized.

Sep 14, 2006

Other postings I know have asked about this error message, but none has quite been my particular experience.

Using Visual Studio 2005 I have developed an aspx (.NET 2.0) web page, which has embedded in it, a Report Viewer object. Clicking a button calls the Reporting Services report and populates the Report Viewer object. This web-page works fine when run from Visual Studio.

Once deployed to the Web Server however, the web page produces the 401 error message.

I can also run the report fine, when running it directly from the Reporting Services Report Manager, so I know I have the proper permissions on RS itself - it fails only when I try calling the report from the ASP page.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike.

Unknown Backup Running (possibly Unauthorized)

May 1, 2008

Hello everyone.

First off, I know little to nothing about SQL. I run the IIS web server and the programmers run the SQL server. Recently the programmers found a backup running everynight at midnight and its messing up the Differential backups. By that I mean, since the full backup runs, the differential isnt backing anything up since it is set to only backup from the last full backup.

The backup seems to be backing up to a "Virtual Device" and I have no idea what that is. I am unable to see any user associated with the backup and I'm at a total loss as to where the data is going. Can someone please help me resolve this issue. I searched but was unable to find anything as I have no idea what to search for to find where this backup is coming from.

Here is a log from said backup...

Database backed up. Database: dbname, creation date(time): 2008/03/10(03:40:58), pages dumped: 1, first LSN: 288:523:56, last LSN: 288:547:1, number of dump devices: 1, device information: (FILE=1, TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE: {'{B9A0EFAB-8894-4BBC-BC77-82DA1B58E2D4}28'}). This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

Lastly... The programmers do have backups running.. full once a week and differentials inbetween. the problem is, those logs look like this...

Log was backed up. Database: dbname, creation date(time): 2008/04/09(03:32:53), first LSN: 135:305:1, last LSN: 135:305:1, number of dump devices: 1, device information: (FILE=1, TYPE=DISK: {'D:ackup imeanddate.BAK'}). This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

Thank you in advance!

VS2005 ReportViewer HTTP ERROR 401 Unauthorized

Feb 9, 2006

Hi, can anyone help with this pls - it's getting very fustrating! there seems to be some messages and text on this issue (looks like a common problem that MS haven't published anything about yet!) but nothing I could make heads or tails off... so any help here would be very useful!

I'm using VS2005 (release, NOT beta), the new reportviewer web control and an ASP.NET page - really basic, nothing fancy. I've set the reportviewer properties to:

ReportServerURL= http://mytestserver/reportserver

ReportPath = /AdventureWorks Sample Reports/Company Sales

I'm testing the ASP.NET page is on my local machine - and the reportviewer is connecting to a remote test server (W2k3 SP1). When I view the page, then I get

HTTP ERROR 401 Unauthorized

Directory Security on the report server is Windows Authentication - W2K3 with SP1 and Reporting Services 2005 (release, NOT beta)

Directory Security on my local machine is Windows Authentication - XP SP2 and VS2005 (release, NOT beta)

Any ideas pls?

Unauthorized Operation Setting Application Security Through VS2005 (Why?)

Feb 12, 2007

I'm attempting to setup the defaco MS security for membership and roles, using a newly created database under SQL 2005 (not express). I created the database using the aspnet_regsql.exe utility and that worked fine. I created my provider connection string logging in as 'sa' wit the proper password. All that seemed to work okay too. However when I attempt to change any of the settings like setting the authentication type or enabling roles, I get the follwing error message: The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation. at System.Security.AccessControl.Win32.SetSecurityInfo(ResourceType type, String name, SafeHandle handle, SecurityInfos securityInformation, SecurityIdentifier owner, SecurityIdentifier group, GenericAcl sacl, GenericAcl dacl) at System.Security.AccessControl.NativeObjectSecurity.Persist(String name, SafeHandle handle, AccessControlSections includeSections, Object exceptionContext) at System.Security.AccessControl.NativeObjectSecurity.Persist(String name, AccessControlSections includeSections) at System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemSecurity.Persist(String fullPath) at System.IO.File.SetAccessControl(String path, FileSecurity fileSecurity) at System.Configuration.Internal.WriteFileContext.DuplicateTemplateAttributes(String source, String destination) at System.Configuration.Internal.WriteFileContext.DuplicateFileAttributes(String source, String destination) at System.Configuration.Internal.WriteFileContext.Complete(String filename, Boolean success) at System.Configuration.Internal.InternalConfigHost.StaticWriteCompleted(String streamName, Boolean success, Object writeContext, Boolean assertPermissions) at System.Configuration.Internal.InternalConfigHost.System.Configuration.Internal.IInternalConfigHost.WriteCompleted(String streamName, Boolean success, Object writeContext, Boolean assertPermissions) at System.Configuration.Internal.InternalConfigHost.System.Configuration.Internal.IInternalConfigHost.WriteCompleted(String streamName, Boolean success, Object writeContext) at System.Configuration.Internal.DelegatingConfigHost.WriteCompleted(String streamName, Boolean success, Object writeContext) at System.Configuration.UpdateConfigHost.WriteCompleted(String streamName, Boolean success, Object writeContext) at System.Configuration.MgmtConfigurationRecord.SaveAs(String filename, ConfigurationSaveMode saveMode, Boolean forceUpdateAll) at System.Configuration.Configuration.SaveAsImpl(String filename, ConfigurationSaveMode saveMode, Boolean forceSaveAll) at System.Configuration.Configuration.Save(ConfigurationSaveMode saveMode) at System.Web.Administration.WebAdminPage.SaveConfig(Configuration config) at ASP.security_setupauthentication_aspx.UpdateAndReturnToPreviousPage(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.OnClick(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.RaisePostBackEvent(String eventArgument) at System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.System.Web.UI.IPostBackEventHandler.RaisePostBackEvent(String eventArgument) at System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(IPostBackEventHandler sourceControl, String eventArgument) at System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(NameValueCollection postData) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)Anyone have any clue why this is happening? SSIS Calling Web Service Task 401 Unauthorized Error

May 23, 2007

Hello,

I'm pretty stuck on a security issue in SSIS. The web service works by itself, but I can't call it from SSIS, it gives me a 401 unauthorized error. The web service also uses impersonation of my domain admin account.

I have tried the following things:
Setting integrated windows authentication in IIS
Setting the NTFS permissions of those web site directories to EVERYONE
Using a credential / proxy in SSIS and running it from SQL Agent
Changing the log on services of MSSQLSERVER, SQLAGENT, and SQL Integration Services to my domain admin account

I can't get anything to work. What is wrong with this thing? Microsoft's security model has gotten completley out of of hand imo

Also in the security event log it shows all authentication as successful.

Integrated Security: Preventing Access Via Unauthorized Applications

Feb 20, 2008

Hi €“

We have built a .NET on SQL Server application with extensive business functionality and security. It uses SQL integrated security to control logon and access to the database objects. There is business logic built into the .NET code, so I don€™t want any chance that users access the tables directly through a tool such as Management Studio - many users need update, delete, insert on tables in order to use the applications functions. With integrated security they can logon through SQL Management Studio and change data in the tables directly.

How are people who are using integrated security for their business applications preventing logons through unauthorized tools or applications?

The Request Failed With HTTP Status 401: Unauthorized. - ReportingService2005 Webservice

Hello, I am trying to schedule a report using the ReportingService2005 web service. It works in my local machine, but as soon as I deploy my web app to a server I get this exception:

System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.

at ReportScheduling.SaveSubscription(String SubscriptionID, String ReportName, Int32 ReportID)
at ReportScheduling.ScheduleReport()

I see that a lot of people are having the same problem but no solutions are given, Answers like "use the default credentials" . Or "pass a user name and a password" are not doing anything. This has got to be a machine setting. Can anyone share the specific fix? Sad that this is not in Microsoft's standard documentation or MSDN. Very frustating.
