SQL UPDATE Database From Excel Table

I had previously posted this in an Access forum
with negative results so will try here.
Although this question specifies an Access database,
I also wish to accomplish this with a large MS SQL Server
database that we have.
Question follows:
The following SQL statement, used in VBScript,
will COPY a table from Excel to an Access mdb.
SQL = "SELECT * INTO C1R0" & _
" FROM [C1R0$] IN ''" & _
" 'Excel 8.0;database=c:excelUpdateFinal1.xls';"
What is the SQL statement that will
UPDATE an already existing Access table
with all rows from Excel spreadsheet?
The columns of both Spreadsheet and database are the
same.

Hi all
I was wondering if it was possible to update a table based off of information from Excel. here is what I though would have worked.
update MyTest Set acctNumber='111' FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=C:MyFile.xls;HDR=YES', 'SELECT * FROM [Sheet1$]') where [ProductGroup]='Hal Butts'
with 'Update MyTest' being the table name. It does have the same name as the excel file. Just to rule that out.
It gives me this error
Ambiguous column name 'ProductGroup'.
If it is possible what is the correct syntax??

I use sql 2000. I have an excel table containing some fields with the first field named code, the same table with more fields exits in my sql database, the issue:
I want to UPDATE all of the fields in sql-db that matches the ones in the excel file where code of the record matches, in sql it sorta look like this:
update mytable (Fields 2, 3, 4,... till last one /the first is the code field/)

I cant seem to reference columns within a linked Excel server
using MS SQL express

i.e I want to update column CCC in my Items table from an Excel table column CCC where column BBB begins with 7

I want to have an SSIS package that will update a table: mystores (storenumber int, storename nvarchar(255))

.. what I need to do is insert the new, update the existing and leave the remaining unchanged. i.e. :

(the UPD and NEW are added to simplify the example).
Now the default action of an excel source into an ole db destination is
an insert into the table - so PK constraints causes failures.
Now, given that the table is referred to by other table, and is in a
24x7 website, how do I change the SSIS package such that, on a
row-by-row basis, anUpSert (update or insert) is performed?
The only idea I have so far is:
create temp table
insert excel data into temp table
iterate through the table, using if exists ... update else insert logic <-- this to be done in a SP
Isn't there a better way?

Every month a client sends a spreadsheet with data which we use to update matching rows in a table in the database. I want to automate this using a DTS package but am having quite a bit of trouble accomplishing what I think should be trivial task. I've been attempting to use a Transform Data Task with a modification lookup but I just keep inserting the rows from the source excel spreadsheet in to the existing destination table without ever modifying the existing data.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as to a best practice approach.

Hi guys, may I know is it possible to create an update trigger like this ? Assuming there are two database, database A and database B and both are having same tables called 'Payments' table. I would like to update the Payments records on database A automatically after Payments records on database B had been updated. I can't use replication because both tables might having different records and some records are the same. Hope can get any assistance here, thank you.

I need to update the AcquiredFrom table from source_office table. both the tables are from different database and server. we can match them on Code and source code. Initially if we can find out the discrepancies and then how can we fix them. Also there might be some dealerships that would have to be added to acquiredfrom table from the source_office table if they are not there already.

Hi everybody.. need help on this situation which i am to.
I have two databases named db1 and db2
both of which has two identical tables named tbl1 and tbl2
I need to compare tbl1 of db1 to the tbl2 of db2
if there is a record that is existing on tbl1 and not on the tbl2 then
i need to create a tblnew on db2
from that tblnew then i need to append all the data from tblnew to tbl2 of db2.
I don't know how to start with it because i'm used to appending data on two tables on the same database but not on a different one...

Hello All,
I am working on constructing a software layer around some features of the RDL language that would allow me to programatically generate reports.
I am reading the RDL specification language, and I do not understand three things:
1) How the DataSet element is populated by the query or more precisely how do the <Field> elements capture all the rows inside the table that is being queries?
To my understanding I wilkl have to define several fields that correspond to all columns of interest in the query.
But that is only for one row (?!) How do the rest of the rows get populated? Does the server recursively create new rows based on my definitions until it matches row for row all the data in the table?
2) Once the elements are inside a DataSet how do make use of that data to render it in a table.
I understand how the DataSource, DataSet, and Table work individually, yet I do not understand how to establish a flow of data between DataSet and Table.
3) Do I even need to use a <Table> as an RDL element in order to organize the data in an excel table?

I have a id field in sql database which is of data type varchar. I want to update multiple records in this table at once or in one query. Here is the code

Its working fine if I am pasing only one id but its not updating the table if I am passing more that one IDs and I am not getting any error message. Then I tried to get it working by passing the strings with single quotes as:
The value of strStudentIDs is "'A2227','B5629'".
Still it did not work.
I got this to work by using Dynamic SQL but I want to do it with string builder instead.
How can I solve this problem?

Hi, I'm a Student, and since a few months ago I'm learning JAVA. I'm creating an application to call and compare times. For this I create in Excel a time table which is quite big and it would be a lot of typing work to input one by one the data in each cell in SQL Server, considering that I have to create 8 more tables. I was able to retreive the data from excel usin the JXL API of JAVA but it doesn't give all the funtions to perform math operations as JDBC. That's why I need to move the tables from Excel to SQL.

I am attempting to run an SSIS package that, among other things, imports a spreadsheet from excel into a database table. The package runs without any issues within Visual Studio. I have tried executing the package through both, the MSDB run package and through dtexec (trying to kick of the package through a stored procedure) and I get 2 different behaviors.
Using dtexec (the method I really need to use): The package will run successfully...up to the point when the spreadsheet is imported at which time it fails with Description: The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "Excel Connection Manager" failed with error code 0xC0202009. Here is the code:
exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /sq PopulateTRTLStationandtRTLUnitMapping /ser SERVERNAME
Running it through the MSDB Run Package UI...It will also make it up to the point where the Excel spreadsheet is imported but errors with: The Product level is insufficient for the component "Lookup Station and Account Type: (1894) ...and 1 line with that same error for every single task in that dataflow. Here is the code it runs.

The machine is running 32 bit OS Windows Server 2003 SP1 and Db SQL Server 2005 32 bit. I found one forum posting that suggested turning the Delay Validation property to True...but that did not fix the issue. I did create the package with my username with a ProtectionLevel of EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey. I don't think it is related to the account however because all of the tasks (serveral work tables are created) up to the Excel import will execute.
I really need to get this working as soon as possible so am open to any solutions someone can present.

have an excel file which contains lots of sheets. Some of them are named as DW-<day>-<month> (for e.g; DW-1-July). Like this I have sheets for the whole month. I have other sheets too with a different name. I would like to import data from these sheets only (DW ones). Upon my research I have found that this can be achieved via For Each Loop Container.

I have some database tables, and each one of them have a creation_date and modified_date in them. I was trying to figure out a way where when a row in one of these tables is changed using Enterprise Manager (Database -> Tables -> select table -> right click -> select all rows -> change a field in a row inside a table), is there a way apart from triggers, such that the "modified_date" column for that row get changed to 'getdate()' (rather picks up the current datetime).

I have a very small SSAS database with around 35 Mb. I opened it on Excel 32 bits and started dragging fields to a pivot table and it started failing with memory errors. The behavior on the SSAS server was that memory started growing very fast until 8 GB (vm memory total) and then the error is reported in excel.
What might be the issue in such a small database? I would understand in a big database, but not on this one.
