SQL Matching Two Multiple Valued Strings

Jul 20, 2005

I am a little stomped and wandering if someone might have an idea how
to go about doing this.

following on from this guide
http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/031004-1.shtml on matching a
comma-delimited string, I would like to expand on this and match two
comma-delimited string in a sproc.

In my database, table A have a city field containing a comma delimited
string ie 'sydney, new york, chicago'. I am passing a similar
comma-delimited string to a sproc and returning matcheing id.

so, we have table A:
id/city
1/sydney, new york, chicago
2/new york, san antonio
3/beijing, sydney
4/london,beijing

passing string 'sydney, new york'

need to return: id 1,2,3 (1,2 match new york and 1,3 matching sydney)

any ideas?

Transact SQL :: Preserve And Return NULL For Non Matching Values From A Table Valued Function

Jun 29, 2015

I have tables and a function as representated by the code below. The names  for objects here are just for representation and not the actual names of objects. Table RDTEST may have one or multiple values for RD for each PID. So the function GIVERD will return one or multiple values of RD for each value of PID passed to it.

When I run the following query, I get the required result except the rows for CID 500 for which PID is NULL in table T1. I want the rows for CID 500 as well with PID values as NULL.

SELECT  A.CID,
A.ANI,
A.PID,
B.RD
FROM T1 AS A CROSS APPLY GIVERD(A.PID) B

CREATE TABLE [DBO].[RDTEST](
[PID] [INT] NULL,
[RD] [INT] NULL
)

Matching Strings In Different Tables Of Same Database

Jul 20, 2005

I have a situation where I want to pull strings from one table of a SQL 2000database and find matches for it in other tables of the same database andhave those values returned. i.e. In one table I have prospects and I wantto match their names to a table that stores the names of prospects turnedinto customers. I want to write a query that looks through every entry andreturns a match for each corresponding value (from prospects to customers). So if "Smith" is found in prospects I want SQL to return "Smith" incustomers with full contact info.Any pointers on getting started on this is greatly appreciated. Or if youcould just point me to a reference. Obviously, I need to do some kind ofparsing. I just need to be pointed in the right direction.Thx.

Fuzzy Grouping Matching Nulls To Empty Strings/spaces

May 30, 2007

Will the fuzzy grouping task match a null value to an empty string (or spaces)? I've got 5 columns I'm matching on, and one of them may be null for certain rows but an empty string for others. Given the 4 other columns may match, will this difference stop similar columns being grouped together?

(Someone's modified my grouped data since it was deduped, which takes a while, and I'm hoping for a quick answer on this).

Thanks in advance.

Update Records Matching Multiple Criteria

Feb 13, 2008

I have an 'update' query that looks like this:

update wce_contact
set blank = 'missing'
where website in ('www.name1.co.uk','www.name2.co.uk','www.name3.co.uk')

I know this query will set 'blank' to missing when it matches the above websites. However if i wanted to set blank to 'missing' where mail1date is not null and mail2date is not null (keep going to mail18date not null) how exactly would i go about this?

I guess it would be a case of adding another bracket somewhere but im unsure?

Working With Multiple Datasets And Connection Strings

May 8, 2008

Hey guys,

I am pretty new to reporting software and I was just wondering in reporting services 2005 when working with multiple datasets and data connection string in order to populate text boxes if the data is a number it is prefixed with SUM at the start of the expression and if it is text it is prefixed with FIRST even though it is just for one value.

I was wondering if this is normal or have I messed up somewhere?

Many thanks.

Replacing Multiple Strings Using The REPLACE Function

Jul 9, 2007

I'm would like to replace all occurrences of "99999" and "-99999" with "" in a column using SSIS. I can use the REPLACE function in a Derived Column to replace one of those strings, for example: REPLACE(mycolumn,"99999",""). Or to replace both I could use REPLACE(REPLACE(mycolumn,"-99999",""),"99999",""). This seems kind of cumbersome and would get very complicated if I were replacing more strings with "". I'm guessing there is a better way. Can anyone help me out?

Is Derived column transformation the best way to do it?

VS2008 Solution With Multiple Projects. Best Practices For Connection Strings And SSCE Files?

Jan 15, 2008

Hi everyone - I'm getting myself into a right muddle and am looking for advice.

How do people deal with connection string matters when taking a dataset defined in one assembly (and by default using the connection strings defined within that assembly in the settings files) and then using that assembly in an app (which also has a requirement to see the same physical database).

I'm not sure I've explained that terribly well but what I'm trying to avoid is duplicate copies of my database which so far seems to be the only way that I've managed to make stuff work. I'm not very experienced with SSCE data access (I'm a serices/sockets/ip person) and this may just be ignorance. Most of the examples seem to assume that the data is in the same place as the app whereas I'm trying to collate a whole series of functions into a helper assembly that I'd like to re-use for other things.

Ideally the dataset designer would provide an easy way of choosing from centralised connection strings - perhaps this is what the Dataset Project implies - but again the docs are mostly focused on SQL Server? Otherwise the best I've been able to do is make the connection properties public and try to update them that way or use a post-build action to copy the database from my datalayer project directory to that of my application |DataDirectory|

I suppose the question might be if you have a dataset containing multiple tableadapters that assumes one connection string, is there any easy way to keep such strings co-ordinated between projects without hardcoding them? With a server resource, the same non-specific connection string resolves to the same server (if that make sense) and this seems to be were I can't make the logical shift.

Does anyone have any thoughts and can they please point this SSCE noob in the right direction?

Cheers

Returning Matching/Non Matching Records

Feb 4, 2007

Hi All

I have a strange request that might not be possible based on the laws of relational databases but I thought I'd give it a try.

I have three tables which for simplicity I will call A, B and C. Table A contains my master records, Table B contains user details and the final table contains some extra data

In my initial search when joining A and B, I return 100 records. I then need to search in table C for these 100 records based on a criteria. the expected result should return all 100 rows for the ones that match and also the ones that do not match. The problem is that in Table C, not all the 100 IDs exist, so there will not be a corresponding record. Unfortunately, our users still want to see all 100 records in the output. Is this possible

As always any help or direction would be appreciated.

Using A Scalar Valued Function As A Parameter Of A Table Valued Function?

Feb 1, 2006

Ok, I'm pretty knowledgable about T-SQL, but I've hit something that seems should work, but just doesn't...
I'm writing a stored procedure that needs to use the primary key fields of a table that is being passed to me so that I can generate what will most likely be a dynamically generated SQL statement and then execute it.
So the first thing I do, is I need to grab the primary key fields of the table.  I'd rather not go down to the base system tables since we may (hopefully) upgrade this one SQL 2000 machine to 2005 fairly soon, so I poke around, and find sp_pkeys in the master table.  Great.  I pass in the table name, and sure enough, it comes back with a record set, 1 row per column.  That's exactly what I need.
Umm... This is the part where I'm at a loss.  The stored procedure outputs the resultset as a resultset (Not as an output param).  Now I want to use that list in my stored procedure, thinking that if the base tables change, Microsoft will change the stored procedure accordingly, so even after a version upgrade my stuff SHOULD still work.  But... How do I use the resultset from the stored procedure?  You can't reference it like a table-valued function, nor can you 'capture' the resultset for use using the  syntax like:
DECLARE @table table@table=EXEC sp_pkeys MyTable
That of course just returns you the RETURN_VALUE instead of the resultset it output.  Ugh.  Ok, so I finally decide to just bite the bullet, and I grab the code from sp_pkeys and make my own little function called fn_pkeys.  Since I might also want to be able to 'force' the primary keys (Maybe the table doesn't really have one, but logically it does), I decide it'll pass back a comma-delimited varchar of columns that make up the primary key.  Ok, I test it and it works great.
Now, I'm happily going along and building my routine, and realize, hey, I don't really want that in a comma-delimited varchar, I want to use it in one of my queries, and I have this nice little table-valued function I call split, that takes a comma-delimited varchar, and returns a table... So I preceed to try it out...
SELECT *FROM Split(fn_pkeys('MyTable'),DEFAULT)
Syntax Error.  Ugh.  Eventually, I even try:
SELECT *FROM Split(substring('abc,def',2,6),DEFAULT)
Syntax Error.
Hmm...What am I doing wrong here, or can't you use a scalar-valued function as a parameter into a table-valued function?
SELECT *FROM Split('bc,def',DEFAULT) works just fine.
So my questions are:
Is there any way to programmatically capture a resultset that is being output from a stored procedure for use in the stored procedure that called it?
Is there any way to pass a scalar-valued function as a parameter into a table-valued function?
Oh, this works as well as a work around, but I'm more interested in if there is a way without having to workaround:
DECLARE @tmp varchar(8000)
SET @tmp=(SELECT dbo.fn_pkeys('MyTable'))
SELECT *
FROM Split(@tmp,DEFAULT)

Concatenate Strings After Assigning Text In Place Of Bit Strings

Feb 19, 2007

I have a whole bunch of bit fields in an SQL data base, which makes it a little messy to report on.

I thought a nice idea would be to assigne a text string/null value to each bit field and concatenate all of them into a result.

This is the basic logic goes soemthing like this:

select case new_accountant = 1 then 'acct/' end +

case new_advisor = 1 then 'adv/' end +

case new_attorney = 1 then 'atty/' end as String

from new_database

The output would be

Null, acct/, adv/, atty, acct/adv/, acct/atty/... acct/adv/atty/

So far, nothing I have tried has worked.

Any ideas?

IIF And Multi-valued Parameters

Apr 15, 2007

Hi

i have a report that can show upto 8 charts, dependant on the selection(s) made in a multi-valued parameter.

basically, the report gets loads of data back from DataCube.

if the user has selected (for example) 2 categories in the multi-valued parameter (e.g. "beverages" & "confectionary") , the the first chart will show the results filtered for "beverages" and the second chart will show the results for the "confectionary" category.

but

i want to hide any charts that are not used - i.e. the user only selects 3 categories, i want to show 3 and hide 5 charts and am trying to do this with IIF in the FILTER properties of the chart

so for each chart, i am checking to see if a Category selection has been made for that chart - and if it has, filter the results and display the chart. if no selection has been made, then filter the results for "XXXXX" (no data with this category)

am doing this by trying to get the selected value or "xxxxx" if noting selected

to hide the second chart when only one category has been selected, tried

e.g. for the third chart

=iif(

Parameters!LOOKUPITEMCategoryDescription.count>2,

Parameters!LOOKUPITEMCategoryDescription.Label(2),

"xxxxx")

doesnt work - gives an #Error as a reult

But it works fine when there are > 2 categories selected

also

this works fine when there is 2 or >2 category selected

=iif(

Parameters!LOOKUPITEMCategoryDescription.count>2,

"more than 2",

"not more than 2")

it would appear that IIF is trying to evaluate the TRUE condition(Parameters!HydraCORELOOKUPITEMCategoryDescription.Label(2)) even though the condition is false !!!

help please

thx

Table-valued UDF With Conditional RETURN

Dec 10, 2002

I'm getting syntax errors that just aren't helping me at all, so I thought maybe what I'm trying to do can't be done. I'm creating a UDF with 4 parameters, and I want it to return a result set (i.e. a table). But I want a different result set depending upon the value of one of the parameters. This works totally fine as a SP, but I can't tell where to put the RETURN clause(s) on the UDF.
I've got:
CREATE FUNCTION myFunction(@param1,...,@param4)
RETURNS TABLE
AS
BEGIN
IF @param1='x'
BEGIN
RETURN(SELECT columns FROM TableX)
END
ELSE
BEGIN
RETURN(SELECT columns FROM TableY)
END
END
I get an "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'IF'" error. I also tried using just one RETURN() wrapped around the outside of the IF construction (right after the very first BEGIN and before the last END), but to no avail. I get no errors when I run this logic as an SP. Is this type of construct not allowed in a UDF? Is there an alternative? I can't just leave this as a proc because I'm going to have to call these results from several views. Help!

Thanks,
-Ed H.
