I have a relativley unique setup
where all the sql servers have been consolidated
so multiple applications are connected to their respective databases on the same SQL server
The problem I have is when an app locks tempdb all the other apps that require it are blocked/slow
The ?
can tempdb be split or multiple tempdb's be created
A few years ago I wrote an active-X server to maintain a singleconnection to a file .mdb from multiple apps on same PC because I washaving to many database curptions.Should I use the same Active-X server for the same in a MS SQL ServerDSN connection or is it ok to have multiple apps from the same pc usingthe DSN?
Management is getting frustrated with the increase in number of NT servers for MSSQL and Vendor packages. Currently we purchase a box for each app. We would like to go to one or two MSSQL servers running multiple application database's (based on size etc) . How are you handling this? Do you do this for test only or both test and production? Any gotcha's. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks john
I have a customer that wants to start using SQL Server 7.0 instead of Oracle, but they have a lot of Oracle applications (made in Developer 2000 and Forms). Due to the big effort needed to convert those applications (to Visual Basic), they want to be able somehow to migrate only data from Oracle to SQL Server, and then use some tool that will allow them to use the same applications with the SQL Server 7.0 engine.
I found on the "SQL Server Developer's Kit" a document describing the process of migrating data and applications from Oracle to SQL Server. There is a mention to an Oracle tool called "Oracle Gateway to SQL Server" that will translate calls received by the Oracle engine to the SQL Server engine, but this approach will still require the existence of Oracle servers (which is the thing the customer no longer wants).
The second option mentioned on that document, and the one that seems more attractive, is the use of Oracle "Open Client Adapter" (OCA) that will allow Developer 2000 applications to communicate directly to SQL Server via ODBC. However, I have been unable to find (on the Oracle site) any documentation regarding this tool.
Has anynoe heard or used such tool (OCA) ? Any comments, tips, drawbacks, experience you could share ? Any other idea on how a thing like that could be accomplished ? Perhaps a third-party application that can act as a gateway between the Forms app and ODBC/SQL Server, or that will be able to generate VB code from a Developer 2000/Forms app...
Any help will be appreciated.
Please respond directly to me, as I am not a member of the distribution list.
Is there a way to simulate hosting three environments on one Report Server. Due to resource limitations, I would like to set up three environments DEV, TEST, STAGE on one report server such that the data source for each environment would be different. Can I use a different folder structure for each and then deploy the reports by providing server url accordingly?
e.g. http://servername/DEV_Reports or should it be (http://servername/ReportServer/DEV_Reports)
we are thinking about consolidating our Vendor Sqlserver needs into single big Sqlserver box. We currently have dedicated boxs for each vendor who requires a Sqlserver Dbs, for example Siemen Sqlserver Dbs are on one box, Clintrac Dbs are on one bx, etc.
It looks like we can save some money on HW/SW and maintenance cost by the consolidation. That's assuming that the Dbs can get along fine.
I was wondering if folks on this group can share their experience or thoughts about above setting.
i have sql server 2000 databse on shaired hosting i want to take backup of that database, how can it be done programitacally or any tools available there . i have limited access to database currently connecting through QueryAnalyzer on local m/c ,it is very time consuming +tedious task to do . i simple word i want to manage my database like one can manage through enterprise manager, how it can be done any tools available some what good functionality for managing database on remote server. or is there any way to take backup through coding (connecting 2 sql server databases). please healp me.
Hi guys,I've got two apps that are going to have pretty much the same users and i wanted them to have the same ASPNET.MDF user database. Is it possible to store the ASPNET.MDF in a different location and then have the two apps access it from there or alternatively have it in the App_Data folder of one of the apps and then have the second app access it from there?Thanx
I have an application that was developed under Visual Basic .NET 2005 Standard that I keep continuously running to monitor and gather data and store that data in a SQL Server Express database. This is all done on a single computer that's not networked to anything. The trouble is, I'd like to look at the data in the database from time to time without shutting down the application, but I'm not able to do so. If I try to copy the database files, named lamination.mdf and lamination.ldf, to another location, I get the following error message;
"Cannot copy lamination: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use."
I would like to be able to copy the file to my office computer where it would be convenient to use Management Studio Express to look at the database tables. I can't even use Management Studio Express on the computer where the application is running, as I get the following message when I try to attach the database:
"CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.) while attempting to open or create the physical file 'C:Documents and Settings barnardMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsLamination Phase ILamDataBaseLamination.mdf'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5123)"
Here is the connection string in the VB application:
"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Documents and Settings barnardMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsLamination Phase ILamDataBaseLamination.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
In the VB app, connections to the database are made only every few minutes, and the connections are immediately closed.
Is there anyway I can either copy the database files, or at least look at the database tables with Management Studio Express without stopping the VB application?
I have SQL Server 2000 with databases on the NetApps filer CIFS share. For example, the datafiles are located at \network shareserversharemicrosoftsqlservermssqldata...Whenever there is a filer failover, some of the databases go in suspectmode. Is there a setting on SQL Server like a time out setting from thenet apps that can be modified so that the databases will wait for awhile before going into the suspect mode?Raziq.*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***
I'm planning an SQL 2005 deployment and would like to know if an SQL server should be kept as dedicated as possible. Should apps that access SQL be kept on other servers? What are the do's and don't's along these lines? The plan here is to install everything that accesses SQL on the same server with the database, but this seems like a bad move to me. Am I right?
I just used the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy 50+ tables from SS05 to SS2K.
I found that the wizard created a package that I could not figure out how to edit, e.g., to change whether or not it had to CREATE a table, or just use an existing one. (I created some problems by manually editing the receiving table names to be ones that already existed -- but the original names it had did not exist, so it knew it had to create them. What I should have done, and eventually ended up doing, was scroll through my list of tables in the "receiving" box; I just figured editing the name would be faster, not realizing what problems I would create for myself.)
Anyhow, now that I see the complex package that the wizard creates, with a LOOP over the 50+ tables, I would like to know how/where in the package it is storing the information about the tables to copy.
Basically the wizard creates the following Control Flow tab entries (in processing sequence order):
an Execute SQL Task: NonTransactableSql an Execute SQL Task: START TRANSACTION a Sequence Container: Transaction Scoping Sequence, which contains an Execute SQL Task: AllowedToFailPrologueSql an Execute SQL Task: PrologueSql a Foreach Loop Container, which contains a Transfer Task with an icon I did not notice in the Toolbox an Execute Package Task: Execute Inner Package an Execute SQL Task: EpilogueSql an "on success" arrow to an Execute SQL Task: COMMIT TRANSACTION an Execute SQL Task: PostTransaction Sql an "on failure" arrow to an Execute SQL Task: ROLLBACK TRANSACTION an Execute SQL Task: CompensatingSql
Where, and how, can I look within this package to see the details about the tables I am transferring? I see that one of the Connection Managers is "TableSchema.XML" -- but it points to a temporary file on my hard drive, that I presume is populated by the package. Where does it get its information?
This is certainly much more complex than the package I would have written, based on my limited knowledge of SSIS. I would have been inclined to create 50+ Data Flow tasks, one for each table.
So now I'm trying to understand why the Wizard created this more-complex package.
Any help will be appreciated, including references to non-Microsoft books/websites/etc.
Hi allWe had a small problem when an ASP web page had a missing 'where' statementand updated all the records in the table. Luckily we could retrieve all thedata from the backups. How do you guys prevent this from happening in your large systems. Is theresome teqnique for controlling this, I would imagine if you had thousands ofrecords in a table and some one made a programming error, then theconsequences would be disastrous.is there a setting within SQL Server that could force SQL update commands tobe limited to a criteria and if no criteria is supplied then reject thecommandthanks in advanceAndy
I have a server that i would like to use as a dedicated DB Server. It is running Win Server 2k3 and SQL Server 2005. The typical upstream bandwidth is anywhere from 384Kb/s to 700Kb/s. Is this enough to host multiple SQL Server 2005 DB's? The DB's will be used for database driven websites. Please let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks,
I have established roles to restrict access to the data entry pages. The database is SQL Server which I've established on the hosting server. Security was previously maintained through ~/app_data/aspnetdb.mdb (MS Access). It works, but isn't too stable, so I have modified the security to use SQL Server with an aspnetdb.mdf file, also located in the app_data folder. Is this appropriate? Since it doesn't work, I assume not. It's now my assumption that I need to setup a SQL Server database to support the security/roles. I have seen some reference to using a script to build the aspnet.mdf on the hosting server. If I do create such a database, is there anything special I need to do to have my application read the aspnetdb? Do I need a connection string in the membership and/or roleManager sections of my web.config. A little guidance would be appreciated. Thanks
I have been reading on aspnet_regsql.exe tool and still haven't found my answer. So here we go... I am using VWD Express and I have already made many pages in many dbs within the app folder. My question is how do I use the aspnet_regsql.exe tool to know what DB that I want the tool to know AND how do I put in the name of the DB on my sql hosting server? For instance:Let say in my app folder I have a DB named testDB.mdf and my hosting sql server is named sqlHostingServer... so if I use the command line entry in accordance with the documentation, it should look like this (in the dos prompt):aspnet_regsql.exe -E -S localhost -d testdb.mdf -A all -sqlexportonly c:output.sqlbut it seems that for the DB name I can put anything I want and still gives me output... wtfark... any help? I don't work at Microsoft so please simple documentation or something like that. Thanks,MR
Can anyone recommend a good tool for administering my database ? It is located on a hosting service, however, they donot allow the use of the SLQ server admin tool since there are security concerns..
I am currently developing an asp.net 2.0 app which uses form authenication now implemented in a sql server express mdf database file. I wonder if there will be problems when I want to deploy this app on a hosted server from a hosting provider. I have the impression that hosting a SQLexpress user instance is currently not supported by hosting companies. Is this correct? Should I revert to an msaccess database instead (we don't want to pay extra for full blown sql server storage). Ronald
I have a SQL .bak generated by our existing hosting package at 1and1.com, I want to import that SQL .bak to our new hosting package at ixwebhosting.com.
ixwebhosting.com don't have a import feature in their control panel.
I have to maintain the SQL at ixwebhosting.com using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express since they don't have that feature in their cp. I don't see any import features in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express either.
How can I import it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express or another free GUI program?
Hello,I'm looking into offering a custom data driven web app that I wrote for an organization that I'm apart of to other similar organizations. I would be hosting the data and web application code on my dedicated server. This application is using the membership api supplied in .NET 2.0 and also has my own custom data tables within it.My question is what would be the best way to add clients to this? Should I simply create a new database for each new client like so: ACME_Database, ABC_Database, AAA_Database etc. Or should I add some sort of client "Tag" (tag meaning column within each datatable) to these databases and then update my SQL queries to process them accordingly. I imagine I could do both but I guess I need some advice from people that already had experiance with providing this kind of service. Thanks!Jason
I need to know how, and if, possible to create a multiple value parameter in SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services. I need this for a client of mine. Any help/tips/etc will be greatly appreciated.
I'm a web developer who writes transact-SQL to make my web applications run properly. I'm not real strong in other areas of SQL. Let me explain our set-up and then I'll explain what I want to do:
We have an ecommerce web site and all sales are saved in a SQL Server 2008 R2 database at our hosting company. We also have a local Windows 2012 network that has SQL Server 2014 Express installed.
Here is what I want to do:
I want to copy sales rows from the SQL Server 2008 database at our hosting company and save them in the SQL Server 2014 Express database on our local Windows 2012 server. I'd like to automate this if possible so that it happens each night perhaps. I know there is a way to schedule SQL jobs but I've never actually done this. I also would need to know how to attach to our hosting company DB as well as our local network DB.
I'm new to database development and have created a database-driven website which now needs to be uploaded to the client's hosting company server. What is the easiest way for a newbie to upload a copy of the databse to the host. Thanks in advance.
i am getting ready to build the back end for a client server application, using a shared sql server as a back end. microsoft's white pages don't mention shared hosting. i need to know if anyone else has had problems with lisencing in a shared hosting environment. my web host told me i don't need to liscence my users (who will have read write priveledges), but microsoft gave me the impression that i did. anyone know a clear answer?
I am using a SQL Server 2000 Database for the purpose of development.
Now I want to host the SQL Server2000 database in the internet and I want to access it via the ASP.Net
1) Please, what is the best server that host SQL Server databases? 2) And Can I control the database remotely(such as execute srcipt to change table structure in the hosted database) as I did in Query Analyzer? 3) Is the administer of the hosting server able to change the strucure and contents of My Hosted DataBase?
I have developed asp .net wbsite with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and Crystal reporting. I want to know that whether i can deploy my website with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition? If yes, Please say SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is a local database version like MS Access or server database version. And also give me name of website or server name on which i can host my website.
hi friends, i need the steps for full text search with more than one tables in single database. I know the steps for full text search by single table in single database. Thanks in advance

I am new to database. I have a website in a hosting environment and it uses sql server 2005 databases. I want to have a complete backup of my database in addition to the hosting company's routine backup. I want to write a program to automatically backup everything every night. And of couse have the ability to restored the whole database if necessary. How should I do it? Are there any tools exist that I can use? What is the best way to deal with backup/restore in hosting environment? Thanks!
