Agent && Replication - Missing And Missed!

Sep 21, 2006

I can't believe this. MSDE was a great product and I'm sure that SQL Express is even better. The difference is that I can't migrate any of my company's applications to it because they rely on a Replication architecture (requiring Replication Publication). And SQL Agent, how are you supposed to keep the database in good shape if you can't run Maintenance Plans at scheduled intervals?

I know, there are third party products out there to compensate for the lack of the SQL Agent, but they don't solve the replication problem. Besides, the Agent still exists in other editions - it's not like it has been dropped completely. Why do we have to lose functionality and features? We have already lost the use of a second CPU and memory > 1GB. Why do they need to keep taking stuff out? Why don't they just limit access to the new feature-set?

I would rather lose the new features such as Report Server and Full Text Indexing and get the SQL Agent and Replication Publication back. I can almost understand that with a free product, they don't want to keep piliing new features in just to give them away - even though I'm sure the sale of the larger editions more than covers the R&D investment in their construction. Why can't we chose? Agent or Report Server, Replication or Full Text Indexing? I don't need some of these new features (others might), I just want the features that I used to have. Perhaps SQL 2005 setup can be made to choose 2 out of the 4 features?

Whats more, I can't even say that I'll just stick with MSDE, as it now has a limited support life. Microsoft announced that any SQL Server version prior to 2005 SP1 will NOT be supported on Vista or Longhorn Server (nor does it support anything less than Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2 where MSDE does).

OK - let me get this right. We had something that has been taken away in the new version. Perhaps I don't deserve the new version if I don't pay for it - fine - I'll stick to the old one I already have. BUT wait... I can't use that on the new platforms coming out.

Are my entry-level customers going to pay for the Workgroup Edition (add AUD$1200 to my entry level edition application of AUD$1500) to replace the Replication Publisher and provide a Maintenance plan? Is anyone going to pay for the re-architecting and re-construction of my application to work around these new limitations?

I guess that will be me. Is this what happens for being loyal to MS products?

Please - give back the SQL Agent and Replication publication.

Joe

Snapshot Agent Missing Files.

Jan 16, 2007

My Snapshot Agent for SQL Server 2005 sometimes does not fully complete. I am expecting around 2073 files in the snapshot folder but only get 492 (this number does change). I have immediate_sync set to true, so I should get a full snapshot every time. It seems to quit after all data has been BCP'ed out and before the schema generation starts. I do get the "The replication agent has not logged a progress message in 10 minutes. This might indicate an unresponsive agent or high system activity. Verify that records are being replicated to the destination and that connections to the Subscriber, Publisher, and Distributor are still active. " message in the MSSnapshot_history table.

I am guessing that there is some sort of blocking that is preventing the snapshot agent from continuing and then it times out and dies. But that is a total guess as I have not been able to observe the behavior, only the outcome.

Any suggestions to what the cause is or how I can fix it?

Thanks, Amy

Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt Missing From SQL Server 2005 Express Toolkit Install

May 10, 2006

The program shortcut "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" seems to be mising from the "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" Start menu added by the current Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Where is it? How to workaround?

I am trying to do Download details SQL Server 2005 Samples and Sample Databases (April 2006) -> GettingStartedWithSQLSamples.htm which says "a. Open a Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 command prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, point to Visual Studio Tools, and then click Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt." but I can find no such command prompt within "Visual Studio Tools", only "Visual Studio 2005 Remote Debugger{, Configuration Wizard}".

What's wrong? How to fix or workaround? I'd install .NET SDK 2.0 to get it's Command Prompt but that's about 570MB merely for a command prompt!

Thanks for your help, -Mike Parker

Missing Log Output Section For SSIS Packages In The SQL Agent Job Properties

May 6, 2008

Hi All,

I have a requirement of logging the failure and the error of a job executing a SSIS package to text file.
However, when I go to job step -> Advanced, in the section "SQL Server
Integration Services Package" where that info to setup logging is, it
is blank and just says:

"There are no options for this command type"

Any ideas?

I thought that this might not be supported in Standard Edition as I am running standard edition. Then I checked on two other servers, where I have Enterprise edition with SP2. On one of the installations, I am able to give the log file, the other one still shows,

"There are no options for this command type"

What is the problem? Both of them I am using the sysadmin role account. I have proxy account created on both the SQL instances. I don't think this is the problem, but still I checked this.

Can anybody help me?

Virendra

Management Studio Missing After Installing SQL Server 2005 Dev

Aug 23, 2006

I've just installed SQL Server 2005 Development Edition x64 on Windows XP x64bit. The actual server (as well as Integration, Reporting Services etc) installs fine, I can connect to it via Visual Studio 2005 fine. However, all of the software tools are missing including Management Studio, Business Intelligence Studio etc. They don't show up in the start menu at all and I can't find them in the Program Files directory.

Anyone know how I can get them back? I've tried reinstalling SQL Server 2005, reformatting Windows XP x64, I'm at my wits end!! Many thanks!

Sql Server 2005 Maintenance Plans Folder Missing

Aug 10, 2007

I've seen a few threads on this which seem to suppose the problem is on Express edition rather than Standard edition. Not so here.
This is definitely Standard edition, SP3 as seen by running
SELECT CONVERT(char(20), SERVERPROPERTY('Edition'))
SELECT CONVERT(char(20), SERVERPROPERTY('ProductLevel'))
In SSMS
Under the Management folder there is no "Maintenance Plans" folder.
There IS a "Maintenance Plans" folder under the Legacy Folder.
I have another instance which is Standard and SP1 which looks just fine.

Missing Fields In MSmerge_history Table Under SQL Server 2005

Sep 5, 2006

Hi,

I have a query that uses the following fields from MSmerge_history:

MSmerge_history.start_time, MSmerge_history.runstatus and MSmerge_history.duration

Below is the query that I am using:

SELECT

MSmerge_agents.subscriber_name AS SubscriberName,

MSmerge_history.start_time AS SyncTime,

MSmerge_history.runstatus AS SyncStatusID,

MSmerge_history.comments AS Comments,

MSmerge_history.duration AS Duration

FROM distribution.dbo.MSmerge_agents MSmerge_agents INNER JOIN distribution.dbo.MSmerge_history MSmerge_history

ON MSmerge_agents.id = MSmerge_history.agent_id

WHERE MSmerge_history.runstatus IN (2, 6) AND publisher_db = DB_NAME()

AND MSmerge_agents.subscriber_name + CONVERT(nvarchar, MSmerge_history.start_time) NOT IN

(SELECT SubscriberName + CONVERT(nvarchar, SyncTime) FROM SyncActivities)

My query runs fine under SQL Server 2000 but when I run it in SQL Server 2005, it doesn't work any more. Looking at MSmerge_history table under SQL Server 2005, this fields have been removed. Does anyone know where I can access those fields? Is it in another table?

SQL Server 2005 - Log Shipping - Missing Sp_change_primary_role And Sp_change_secondary_role

Dec 14, 2006

My question is :

"Is it safe to get these stored procedures from a SQL Server 2000 database and run them on the SQL Server 2005 database ??"

"Has anyone come across such missing stored procedures in SQL Server 2005 and know the reason why it is so (so that I can avoid it in the future if it due to a faulty installation) ?"

SQL Server 2005 SP2 Agent XPs Error

Mar 18, 2007

I have been having a problem with an attempted install of sp2 (the updated one) and don't have a clue on how to get past it. Here is the error that I get

MSP Error: 29537 SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]SQL Server blocked access to procedure 'dbo.sp_is_sqlagent_starting' of component 'Agent XPs' because this component is turned off as part of the security configuration for this server.

What is strange is that I have ensured that the Agent XP's are enabled prior to the sp install by checking the agent xp's configuration option but it seems as though during the sp install it disables them and encounters problems when trying to start the SQL Agent resulting in a failure of the sp install with the message shown above.

When I check the database after the failure, it does show the AgentXP's as being disabled. I've re-enabled them multiple times with the same result.

The sp is being installed on a 2 node cluster but only one node is having the problem, the other upgraded fine. I have also had this problem on a single non-clustered server with 3 instances where two of them installed fine but one didn't, it too had the same error message.

My basic configuration is as follows:
x64 Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2
SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (for the clustered server) Dev Edition for the standalone server

Any thoughts on how to get past this problem or is this a bug?

Missing Some Components In SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration

Feb 29, 2008

I was studying the SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration tool to see how i could increase security.

I cannot find some of the components in “Surface area Configuration of Features.

For example DAC appears to be missing. This is a dedicated administrator connection that allows an administrator to connect to a server.

Is this because I have SQL 2005 express instead of the professional version or could it even be to do with the operating system (XP home)

Only the following components are listed under "Database Engine":

Ad Hoc Remote Queries
CLR Integration
Native XML Web Services
OLE Automation

SQL Server 2005 64bit Install - Missing Management Studio

May 27, 2007

Good Afternoon,

I just installed SQL Server 2005 64bit on a fresh system with no other applications loaded on running on the new server.

The only other component that was installed with the SS2K5 database services is SSIS. The base installation and the SP2 patch went on perfect.

I went looking for the Management Studio thru the Start menu options and it is NOT under the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 group. The only options under the SS2K5 group are "Configuration Tools" and "Docs and Tutorials".

Here are file names that I downloaded from the MS website and installed.

SW CD SQL Svr Enterprise Edtn 2005 64Bit X64 English #1 x64 MLF.x11-57796 (which is a zipped)

SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x64-ENU

There was also another zipped file that I tried to install but it seems to be a duplicate of the zipped file above:

SW CD SQL Svr Enterprise Edtn 2005 64Bit X64 English #2 x64 MLF.x11-57797

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks ALL!

SQL Server 2005 Agent - User Account

Jun 26, 2007

Who needs to invoke the jobs in SQL05? Manually executing the job import_myteam as a user with dbo privileges fails. So, which user account should be assigned to successfully run scheduled jobs (ie, dbo)?

The package file for the job in question is located in the server€™s C:Documents and SettingsuserxyzMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsIntegration Services Project3Integration Services Project3MyTeam (1).dtsx, but this still fails when the user userxyz is logged on and is executing the job directly from the server console.

Step1 of the package executes as userxyz
Step 2 fails and runs as cpmc-casql02

The user account userxyz has administrator rights to the server as well as being a sysadmin of the SQL2005 database (named cpcasql02).

The account cpmc-casql02 is a €śpublic€? user of the database and is a member of the administrator group on the server itself.

This same scenario carries for tasks as simple as truncating a table and importing the contents of another table in the same database.

All of these jobs exhibit the same behavior whether run directly from the server console on remotely from a workstation connected to the SQL2005 database.

Attempting to get a really simple job working, we also created a very simple SSIS package which does a select from a database table and writes the output to a text file. When running the same package from the user€™s workstation within Visual Studio, the package executes successfully. Once copied to the server, and run from within SQLServer as MyJunePackage however, the execution fails in the same manner as described above. The first step executes successfully as the logged-in user and the second fails executed under the account cpmc-casql02.

So, again we have the same behavior of sequential steps being run as different users with unsatisfactory results. Please advise as to how to set up these jobs to run correctly and consistently.

Thanks very much,Eric W

SQL Server 2005 Database Mail And Agent Error

Feb 9, 2006

Hello, hoping someone might be able to help.

I've set up Database Mail on an instance of 2005 and the test mail works just fine. However, when testing a job (notify on fail, success, whatever) the mail fails to send. Job History last information reads NOTE: Failed to notify 'My Name' via email.

Checked out the Database Mail logs - nothing interesting.

Restarted the Agent service and then checked out the current Agent Log. Found message:

[260] Unable to start mail session (reason: No mail profile defined).

The 'DatabaseMailProfile' key is most certainly defined in the Registry
(at 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'SOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1SQLServerAgent')

I'm at a loss...why is it telling me no mail profile defined?
I'd be most grateful for any help if anybody else has run across this problem.

Import And Export Data Wizard Missing In SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

Feb 9, 2007

After some weeks evaluating tools and platforms for developing an application, I decided to move to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Everything was fine till last night, when after creating my tables, I needed to populate them. I tried to find the Import and Export Data Wizard that SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 used to have, but great was my surprise when I found -  in this forum - a post that said that it's not available in the Express Edition.

I'll have to move back in time (what I hate) to remember the way BCP worked. Can somebody post some examples to not start from zero ?  Does anybody know a third party visual tool that can import/export data from text files to a SQL Server DB via ODBC ?

What's the reason it was not included in the EE ?

THanks !
