SQL Server Log File Is Not Shrinked
Jul 23, 2005
I have MS SQL server 2000 with MOM server. I was able to shrink the
database file, but when i try to shrink the log file i fail. I use
"shrink database" wizard and try to reduce the log file from 640 MB to
32 MB and i select this number in "shrink database to __" and wait. I
got a success message box but the old size remains.
Any ideas?

The transaction log in a database in our SQLSERVER-2000 server hasgrown to 16GB. I cannot shrink the transaction log manually because itsays that the entire 16GB log size is not free. This is strangebecause we backup the transaction log every hour, and that should havetruncated the transaction log, and should have limited the size of thetransaction log; somehow, the entire transaction log is still markedas being used.I was under the impressionI believe that must have something to do with the fact that thedatabase is a part of our nightly replication. The reason is that whenI tried the following commands, I got that error message:checkpointdump transaction isprod with no_logThe log was not truncated because records at the beginningof the log are pending replication. Ensure the Log ReaderAgent is running or use sp_repldone to mark transactionsas distributed. What does this mean? How can I get away from this mess? Thanks.Jay Chan

I need to write a process to get file size in kb and record count in a file. I was planning on writing a c# console app that takes the file path and name as a param however should i use a CLR?
I cant put a script in the ssis when it's bringing the file down because it has been deemed that we only use ssis for file consumption.

For a database, we have 4 data files in a particular file group and the file sizes are almost 70 GB each.
Do I come across any performance issues if I create/pre-allocate an additional data file in the same file group so that the existing files don't grow too much?

I am able to run SSIS packages as SQL Server Agent jobs with a Control Flow items "File system task", if I move a file (test.txt) from a drive (c on the server (where SQL Agent jobs run) to a subdirectory on the same drive. But, if I try to move a file on a network drive, the package fail.
What I can do to solve this issue.

Historically I've always written a VB script to copy a file from a sharepoint library. I don't like this method because I have to input a username & password in the script and maintain a config file.
Yesterday I was playing around with using a file system task. The sharepoint file has a UNC path so why not? I created a simple test package with a single file system task that copies the sharepoint file (addressed via UNC) to another network location. Package runs fine locally.
I try running on our utility server but am getting a "The file name [SHAREPOINT UNC PATH] specified in the connection was not valid" error. Package is running with a proxy on the server and the proxy account has the same permissions to the sharepoint site (so far as I can tell) as me.

I have written my application in vb.net with the data file being a sql server .mdf file currently stored on my hard drive using an instance of sql express.
However the intention is to have the file on a file server so that the client will be on users computers and the database on the server.
I just tested my app with the .mdf file on a file server and got this error:
The file "\mazepcc$DeveloperTestDBTestSQL.mdf" is on a network path that is not supported for database files.
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file "\mazepcc$DeveloperTestDBTestSQL.mdf" failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
Oh please PLEASE tell me I can access an mdf file on the network!!
I am in BIG s**t if it it is not possible.
If not can anyone please suggest a way to save my bacon?
For the record a SQL Server instance on this or any other server is out of the question!
I thought that as VS.NET provided all the divers etc it would work.
I am in meltdown panic mode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,My webhost (1and1) is running SQL Server 2000 and their web tool supports the import of .bak files. However, when I try to import my .bak files created in SQL Server Management Studio Express I get the following error:"The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server
supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally."I have Googled this error and learnt that 2005 .bak files are not compatible with 2000 .bak files. I'm just wondering if there are any work arounds to this or alternative tools that I can create 2000 compatible .bak files from from 2000/2005 .mdf files. Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I am new to this sql server reporting server technology. I have a requirement like the table header should repeat in all pages of the exported excel's print preview. So I have created the header columns with fixed lenths as same as table's header in the page header of the report. Then only the Header will repeat in all pages of the print preview.
But the problem is when doing like this, many of the columns have been merged together. The report layout is ok. But cant sort the data. It says a message "This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized."
In some forms i have found the header control's edges need to be sized identically with the tables' columns edges. I did it. But still the columns are merged when exporting.
Please help me out from this.
Thanks in advance.

Currently have a single hard coded file path to the SSRS config file which parses the file and provides the reporting services web service url. My question is how would i run this same query against 100s of servers that may or may not share the same file path as the one hard coded ?
Is there a way to query the registry to find the location of the config file of any server ? which could be on D, E, F, H, etc.
I know I can string together the address followed by "reports" and named instance if needed, but some instances may not have used the default virtual directory name (Reports).
Am I going about this the hard way ? Is there a location where the web service url exists in a table ? I could not locate anything in the Reporting service database. Basically need to inventory all of my reporting services url's.

Here is my Problem:
1. I have sql 2008 R2 running on my LocalHost.
2. Created Data Base [Customer].
3. Created Linked Server [CUSTOMERLINK] USING Microsoft Jet 4.0 to link to Drive F:Data which has DBF files in it.
4. Create dbo.Customer_Upload Table.
5. INSERT INTO [Customer].[dbo].[Customer_UpLoad]
([Name],[Email])
SELECT
NAME,EMAIL
FROM [CUSTOMERLINK]...[CUS]
All this works fine. I can even put it in to an After Insert Trigger on another table and it works.
My problem is that I need this to work in a scheduled job.
F:Data is just a folder with files in it.
This info is from a Restaurant POS system and I need to update it every night.
I have tried every which way to to setup the security issue as there isn't any login security on the folder and SqlServerAgent wants security.

hello,
I have a question about opening files in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio.
In the old Query Analyzer from SQL 2000 I can open SQL Files via drag & drop (from explorer to QA) or open it with a double click in the explorer. Then the Files opened, if I had actual a connection to a server / database (QA is stared with one file and has a connection to Server/Datebase), with this connection.
Now in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio I'll be asked everytime for Server and have to get the database from the database list - it does not connect automaticly to server/database, that is actual connected (I have opened a file with the connection and a connected database in the object explorer).
Someone do not have this problem - but we found no option to set it up.
Any ideas?
thanks &
best regards,
Christian Kiedels

Is this even possible? I tried to move an existing Sql Server Express .mdf file to SQL Server 2000 by copying the .mdf file to the server's folder and then tried to attach it. I get:
Error 602: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 9, object ID 1, index ID1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes.
I realize that I'm moving back a version in SQL, however the structure of the database is very simple. Does anyone know?
Even if I can just script the thing to SQL 2000 would be helpful, however the .mdf is a file within my ASP.Net site, and does not show up in my Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express under the appropriate SERVERNAMESQLEXPRESS either, so I can't figure out how to script it out?

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.

Eventually with hosting in mind, what are the pros and cons of designing one's backend as a file ( within the Website directory) as compared to creating the database onthe egistered SQL server of the development machine?
e.g. If I go thru SQL Server express 2005 and create a new db say MyDb, it creates it on the default SQL server of my machine, (without prompting for the DB files physical location.. I'm sure one would have to search)
Is it the same as choosing between MSDE Vs SQL Server 8 in the VS 6.0 era? oris there more than meets the eye? Any known best practices, performance issues etc?
Thanks
