Hi. Windows authentication works fine, but when I use SQL server authentication it doesn€™t work.
Does SQL server use the same password as my Windows login?
It sounds like it does:
From the site: http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/
Windows authentication: Only authenticated windows users can gain access to the SQL instance. You need to add a windows login for each windows user or group that needs access to SQL instance.
But I gave my Windows login a password but still can€™t connect other than in Windows authentication.
How can I set up, for my default user account, a user password for SQL if it is already installed?

I am trying to create a linked server between 2 SQL Server 2005 boxes. When I create the linked server I specify a login for the connection. The strange part is that I get the following error when it goes to test the connection:
The test connection to the linked server failed Login failed for user 'Domainuser'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)
I can use the SQL mangement studio to conenct to the database using this same login. The login has all the server roles assigned to it also.
Can anyone shed some light as to what may be the problem?
Cannot open database "QuoteSystem" requested by the login. The login failed.Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'. Last time I recieved this error I had to add ASPNet, NTAuthority, and myWebSiteUsers USERS under the database properties-->permissions setting for the specific database I am trying to access with the website but this database(QuoteSystem) does not lists any of these objects so I can add them. Does anybody know what I have to do to fix this? I am using SQL Server 2005.

I wrote a code to check and validate the username and password against the database and redirect the user based on the user flag as follows:
Dim MyConnection As SqlConnection Try If Page.IsValid Then Dim strUsername As String = txtUsername.Text Dim strPassword As String = txtPassword.Text Dim DS As DataSet
Dim MyCommand As SqlDataAdapter
Dim SelectCommand As String = "select userid, flag from employees where username = @login and password = @password"
MyConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=localhost;Integrated Security=SSPI;" & _ "Initial Catalog=rfd;") MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter(SelectCommand, MyConnection)
If DS.Tables(0).Rows.Count = 1 Then Dim flag As String = DS.Tables(0).Rows(0)("flag") Dim id As Integer = DS.Tables(0).Rows(0)("userid")
Session.Add("flag", flag) If flag = "u" Then Session.Add("userid", id) Session.Add("Page", "user") Response.Redirect("user_index.aspx") ElseIf flag = "pl" Then Session.Add("userid", id) Session.Add("Page", "pl_index") Response.Redirect("PL_index.aspx") End If Else msg1.Style("color") = "red" msg1.Text = "Username or Password incorrect: Please Try again" End If End If Finally Session.Timeout = 10 MyConnection.Close() End Try
End Sub
However, when I run it, it points as the line " MyCommand.Fill(DS)" and said Server Error - Login failed for user/aspnet. Where should look and what should I ckeck? Please help me !

When I tried to add a new login to the server and after assigning DB Roles, I am getting the error message that the role has been already added to the user. I think this username has already been in the system earlier. It is in the sysuser table. I tried to delete the roles to which this user has permissions. But still I am getting this error. I am not sure where else it is stored. How can I delete this username completely from all Databases and reassign this userid in the server. Please advise.

I have a SAP Server running SQL2000 on Windows 2003.Recently I migrated the server from a NT4 Domain to a AD Domain usingADMT (with SID Migration for users) and everything seems ok.Now, after one month, I have to shut down the old NT4 domain and beforedoing it I have to replace the old logins in SQL with the correspondentusers in the new domain.I applied a script which returned Error 15401: Windows NT user or groupNEWDOMUser not found. Check the name again.I checked the KB article 324321http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;324321I applied the suggestion to verify ifSELECT name FROM sysxlogins WHERE sid = SUSER_SID 'NEWDOMUser')returns a row, but this is not happening. Then I tried to create the new login from the Enterprise Manager. So Ibrowse for the user and I'm able to find it (It exists! It's the sameuser I use to login on the server) but when I apply the changes I getthe same 15401 Error. So it seems that the KB article is not useful because:1) There is no duplicate security identifier2) It's not an authentication failure because I can login and browsethe AD. Also if I choose another AD user it works!3) I don't think it's a case sensitivity problem because it happensalso from EM. By the way, I verified the SAMAccountName AD property ofthe user and the name is all UpperCase.I checked lots of posts dealing with this matter but they don't seem toapply.Any help would be greatly appreciatedThanksDave
when i tried to login at SQL server 2005 by my local account i found an error (i login by the administrator account and use windows authentication) ... can any one help me plz??
winXP Pro I installed a copy of SQL Server Standard and had it working correctly with Windows authenication logon. I subsequently upgraded to Windows Vista business edition. I also upgraded to SQL Server sp2. Now I get the dreaded "SQL Server, Error: 18456" when trying to connect to the instance of SQL server on my machine. On solution seems to be to login to the original instance and use a stored procedure to update subsequent instances of SQL server.
My subsequent instance is my original instance with the new OS. I do not have a clue how to edit registry entries or any othe methods of overcoming this problem. Anyone have a solution that I could use? Help would be very much appreciated.
i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database. When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and push 'Test connection' button. everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things, from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore.... it only work when i restart the computer.

When I am trying to connect my database using SQL Server Authentication option, then its showing error: "An attempt to login suing sql authentication failed. Server is configured only for Windows authentication only."
My application is dependent on two databases one is on sql 2005 machine and other is on sql 2000 machine. A linked server is establish between these two using sql account which has appropriate rights on both server's databases.
application works fine but after some time it crashes and if i see error from sql profiler i get the error
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "sql2000machine" returned message "Login timeout expired".
Few days back applciation was working absolutly fine, but i was trying to make linked sever through windows account, i dnt know wat has i changed during achiveing that setup that now application (linked server) is not working even with sql account.
Until a few weeks ago I was very satisfied with my frontend/backend application Access 2003/SQL Server Express. Then I tried to build a website with Dreamweaver 8.0 and connect it to the Server DBase and everything went wrong. My problems are the following:
In trying out the connection between DW and SQL I tried and changed some things with no result. I suddenly got a problem with the Norton firewall (wurms part) and with the named instance. At this very moment I sometimes have to switch from ".SQLEXPRESS" to "<machinename>SQLEXPRESS under Windows authentication. (provider: TCP provider, error 0 - no connection because of an active refuse of the goalcomputer)(MSQL Server error 10061). How can I solve this problem? The connection between DW (using ASP) and SQL Server always gives the same error: "ODBC drivers error 80004005 cannot open database x requested by login. The login failed". I tried everything I know (that isn't much by the way) but getting no connection between the two programs. When I test the connection and the recordset in DW everything is OK. Anyone any suggestions? The third problem is the most important. By doing things like (1) en (2) my frontend/backend database has become very very slow (it takes minutes to get a simple query done) and in fact doesnot function at all. When I look in de SQL part everything seems OK and I can open the tables quickly, but in Access the menus work but the forms and queries don't. This problem is very essential to me and I hope there is a solution?
I hope I'll get some answers to the above questions.
Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors. First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.
My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005' [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "mydatabasename" requested by the login. The login failed. /index.asp, line 10 which is dbConnect.Open cstring
from this peice of code:
sub dbOpen() set dbConnect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") cstring = "DSN=mysqldsn; Trusted Connection=yes" dbConnect.Open cstring end sub
I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)
I also notice under mywebsite home panel there is a connection string option. Do I do anything with that?
Hi, Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SERVICE'. my applicaton working on other machine perfect with the same code but when i upload on web server showing me above error.
I just upgraded SQL Server 2000 to 2005 without any errors. Afterwards, I tried registering with sa and it failed. I registered with another sysadmin login to get into most of my databases, but I need sa to work for my backup software Idera SQLSafe to login to the database.
Does anyone have any experience or recommendations? I know my password is correct.
Hi, I am having such a problem. I have SQL Express installed on the windows 2003 server and originally I installed instance1 of SQL Server 2005. When I installed Instance1, I remember having problems with remotely connecting to that instance1, but somehow I fixed it. Now I installed instance2 and I started having remote connection issues again with that instance2. I am able to connect to instance1 but not instance2. I checked settings for both instances and they look identical. I turned firewall off for now. I checked TCP settings using surface area configuration (allowing both local and remote connections). I turned off VIA protocol. I specified TCP properties to use dynamic port for that instance2. In the sql native client configuration I have the following order#: 1. Shared memory, 2. tcp, 3. np, 4. VIA(Disabled). TCP is configured to use 1433. I have no clue about what is going on. Sometimes I am able to connect remotely and sometimes I get the following error: "A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)." When I connect locally - everything connects fine. File sharing is also checked, it works etc... Thanks for help!!! GK I just noticed that I was able to connect from different computer on the different network.
I get the following error when trying to view my page.
Can someone please help me with this error. What does it mean and what is the solution to it? Here is the complete error message. - A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)
Please help I keep getting this message when I log on to my data base. Not sure what state 1 relates too

i'm going nuts with SQL server notification thing. I have gone throigh this artical which tells how to set user http://www.codeproject.com/KB/database/SqlDependencyPermissions.aspx. Hi all,I am trying to setup a VB.Net development environment on my desktop for one of the application which was already in the production for couple of years (some unknown contractor(s) developed and maintained it so far). The application works fine on the web.Visual Studio 2005, .Net 2.0, SQL 2000, SQL Server 2005 were installed on my desktop. When I try to build the entire application/solution in the debug mode (i.e., with http://localhost/), build succeeds and I could get to the login.aspx. When I try to login, I am getting an error in the Visual Studio at the following code;connection = New SqlConnection(connectionString) connection.Open() saying "Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed", "System.Transactions.TransactionManagerCommunicationException was unhandled by user code". And the web browser displays the following error "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component". When I try to connect the SQL Server 2005 with the same ConnectionString attributes by going to Tools>Connect to Database, it works fine. But, through application connection.Open() giving above errors. I have set the MSDTC properties (i.e., under Component Services>MyComputer Properties>Security Configuration) as below:-Enabled Network DTC Access, Allow Remote Clients, Allow Remote Administration, Allow Inbound, Allow Outbound, No Authentication required - selected, Enabled XA Transactions...& DTC Logon Account is "NT AUTHORITYNetworkService".Please help. Thanks in advance,Chandra
hi, i am getting the following error message while i am trying to login to the SQL Server 2005 on my vista laptop. i installed the server with dual authentication modes.
Login failed for the user'xxxx'(Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Error:18456)
if you have solution for my problem please send a reply as early as possible.
I then try to run the same app from the client computer, it gives me:
Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'.
After looking up the web for solution, I found that I can test the connection from the HOST computer in this way:
C:Documents and Settingskit>sqlcmd -E -S laptopsqlexpress 1> 2>
The test is successful
Now I run the same command on the CLIENT computer
C:Documents and SettingsKit>sqlcmd -E -S laptopsqlexpress Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Server LAPTOPSQLEXPRESS, Line 1 Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'.
Now I can sure that from the client computer it cannot make a connection to it, then I look at the errorLog from my host computer
2006-08-13 21:41:00.34 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2006-08-13 21:41:00.34 Logon Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'. Now I know it is actually Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11.

Valid login but server access failure
It tells the connection string and SQL Express seem to be set up properly but the server access failed the remote connection
I have previously had SQL Server 2000 installed. I uninstalled SQL 2000 before I install SQL express but somehow the SQL Server Service Manager is still running at startup, and C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server80 and its files are still exist after uninstallation..... Could this be a problem?
The Knowledge base suggestion on "enabling remote connection" is very simple and I do not understand why it is so difficult to me just to make a remote connection test work..... please, I need your help.
I am trying to use a linked server and it works as long as I do not specify the sp_addlinkedserver @provstr parameter. If I specify that parameter I always get a 7416 "Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists" error. I have tried adding the logins various ways but it's very specific to the @provstr parameter, and it doesn't even matter what I put in that parameter. As soon as I put something in there whether it is valid or invalid, I get the error.
Anyone else seen this? There is an amazing lack of any discussion about the error when I search for it.
It doesn't even make any difference what I put in the @provstr parameter - the sp_addlinkedserver statement always executes without an error, but running a query that uses the linked server generates the error.
