I have a problem when trying to setup replication between two SQL servers on different networks.
My publication server is SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition. My subscription server is SQL server 2005 Express Edition
I have setup the publication no problem but am now trying to create my subscriber. However, when trying to connect to the server, I receive the following error:
SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'W2M-RDC-01'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.
However, because the servers are not on the same network, I cannot use the server name.
Why does it not allow you to connect to an IP?
Is there a way to create an alias? I have read that you can but am unsure how to do this. Do I need to change the hosts file? If so, where can I find this and what exactly do I need to change?
We have two server on pulbilc ip A , B in other country, and there replication will working fine. But i want to replicate data from one online server(A) to my local office(in my country) server(C). means from public ip to private(A->C). then some one told me that you have to put both server on public for replication. after the i put my local server(c) on public ip. but now i am facing the problem that i am able to connect C to A(means my office server to other country server) but not able to connect A to C(means other country server to my office server). when i am connecting from A to C then error shows is "defaut sqlserver server does not allow remote connection". I have change all the sql settings..and also done required changes in firewall but not successed. my operating system 2003 and database sql2005........ please help me................ASAP
SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'xxxxxx'. (Replication.Utilities)
Hi!I´m trying to create a merge replication publication for a SQL MobileApplication .Everything works fine creating the publication and I'm able to dothehttp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/aaaaaaa/sqlcesa30.dll, and it display's the"sql server mobile server agent 3.0".But when I run the application on the PDA and it´s doing thereplication it appears the following error:'Failure to connect to SQL Server with provided connectioninformation . SQL Server does not exist , access is denied becausetheIIS user is not a valid user on the SQL Server , or the password isincorrect' .any idea of which could be the reason...?Thanks in advance!!!
I have merge replication configured over VPN and the replication is failing to connect to the subscriber through Named pipes with the error Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server ......
Actually , I am having issues with Named pipes connection from publisher to subcriber. I have enabled the protocols and also enabled the remote connections using both tcp/ip and named pipes. I have created the client network alias using named pipes
Also, due to security reasons only few ports have been released on the subscriber. Please provide me some information on the following. 1) Does any port specifically be released for listening on named pipes? i am able to connect using tcpip with out any issues as 1433 has been released. 2) How to configure the replciation to use tcpip and not named pipes (guess by default it will use named pipes)?
How it is possible to perform "replication" between two databases using technological means of MS SQL Server 2005 if two servers do not have a connection at all. The only thing is possible - is transfer of data for the replication on a CD.
What is the best way to do it if central database has a hundreds of such "subscribers"?
Hello, I only need to know if I need to have a bidirectionnal connection between the subscriber and the publisher for merge replication or if the connection ca be openned only from the publisher to the subscriber if i use the push subscription option.
I've been looking around in several SQL-Forums and in SQL Books Online but haven't found clear suggestions how to tackle my problem:
Our company has to fill a database with documentation for our contractor. Our subcontractors have to supply information from their branch/craft into this database, too.
Replication (without determining a type at this time) would do fine for data-exchange between us and our subcontractors.
But for working in different companies the networks are not connected and in some companies/departments connection to the Internet is prohibited at all. This would result in data-exchange based on files - which wont be a problem as data needs to be updated/exchanged only once a week and is usually done at meetings using DVD-Rs.
scenario in short: - two-way exchange of data between SQL servers being not connected - update needed once a week - our server: SQL Server 2005 Standard (preferred) - servers of our subcontractors: SQL Server Express 2005 (preferred)
That's the point where I dont know how to proceed: Is two-way replication based on files possible at all?
I read about Snapshots, but to my understanding this replaces the "whole database" without caring about changes made to it and that's why it wont work for two-way exchange.
I would appreciate your hints how to solve this problem in general or whether I should look out for other solutions - MS Access might work with restrictions - but I would prefer SQL Server.
Thanks for reading until here and in advance for your answers.
I have 2 servers; 1 in the head office and the 2nd at a remote location connected over a satellite. The satellite connection has typical latency and bandwidth. 2 mb down and 128kb up. Latency is average of 700ms.
Both servers have plenty of processing power and RAM and are very underutilized.
I have 1 push publication at the publisher at the remote location. The publication has 1 article. The table that is contained in the article only grows; ie inserts are the only statements applied, no updates or deletes. The table grows by 5 inserts every second(approximate). the table has 5 columns. none of the columns are blobs etc. An ID field, 1 datetime, 2 integers and 1 float column.
I have the agents set for continuous with a 2 second polling interval.
I am aware of the following command parameters for the agents but not sure which way to go to maximize the throughput of the data.
The subscriber table also has an insert after trigger to update another small table with the current value. Under normal network conditions, the trigger works great. Over the sat connection with high latency, the smaller target table seems to get a lock placed on it. I can only guess that the lock is from the inserts and perhaps a large number of inserts per transaction?
Under normal network conditions, the latency between publisher - distribution - subsciber is about 4 seconds.
What would be good command parameter settings for the agents to compensate for the latency?
DBCC OPENTRAN shows "REPLICATION" on a server that is not configured for replication. The transaction log is almost as large as the database (40GB) with a Simple recovery model. I would like to find out how the log can be truncated in such a situation.
Hi, I had an old web application created during asp.net 1.1 and it have a connection problem with the sql server 2005 when it is mirgrated to a new webserver with dotnet framework 2.0 platform. I have enabled the remote access(TCP/IP and named pipes) in sql server 2005, did all the neccessary things, check whether the TCP/IP is enabled, named pipe is enabled... I created another web application using VS 2005. The database connection works perfectly well. This are the connectionString from the old web application.<appSettings> <add key="ConnectionString" value="Server=127.0.0.1;Database=somedb;User id=user; Password=somepassword; Trusted_Connection=False; POOLING=FALSE"/></appSettings> Thankyou in advance!
Occasionally I'm seeing the following error when tranlog or full backup maintenance plan is executing.
Failed-1073573396) Failed to acquire connection "Local server connection". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection.
What is strange is that it goes away without any action from myself. We have a tranlog backup that is scheduled every hour. I had this error happen once in the middle of the night. It looks like the job was running fine because almost all the backups are there. I've searched and not found a resolution to this error. I checked the event log and don't see any issues and even tried rebuilding the maintenance plans.
Hi,I need some help. I am getting this error after I complete the asp.net register control and click on the continue button. It crashed when it tries to get it calls this Profile property((string)(this.GetPropertyValue("Address1")));When I look at the stack, it is coming from my ProfileWrapper class which adds user address, city, etc.. from a class which inherits fromSystem.Web.Profile.ProfileBase. From the stack, it is calling the System.Web.Profile and crashed when it tries to open a connection atSystem.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(DbConnection owningObject). I already migrated all aspnet_user, aspnet_roles, etc.. and don't get any connection errors. It is only when I try to get the profile data. This works on my pc, but throws an error on my lunarpage website.Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,AJAn error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. All -- Please help. I have some questions about connection strings.
BACKGROUND...
Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005. Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string. Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference. Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.
QUESTIONS... (A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean? (B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string? (C) Are there any alternatives? (D) What do you suggest?
When using jdbc with IntegratedSecurity, I run into this problem when the machine is not part of a domain & gets its IP address via dhcp. Is this expected behavior or a bug in the jdbc driver.
The SQLServer and client application are installed on the same machine and a local admin is logged in, running the client app.
If I change one of the two parameters mentioned above, the connection can be established leading me to believe this may be intentional for security issues. Am I correct?
I created a single step plan that does integrity checks. It fails with the error below. I created a new connection using our clusters virtual sql name.

Let me set the stage of my testbed configuration: On Windows XP SP2, my default connection to the Internet is via wireless express card modem using EV-DO via Verizon Wireless. Let's call this connection A. I also have a traditional wireless network connection (802.11g) that is always enabled. Let's call this connection B. Connection A is always connected during normal business hours. Connection B is not and is often searching for a wireless network to connect to when nothing is in range.
Yesterday, connection B was continuously trying to connect to a wireless network not under my control, meaning that the connection was never established and notification messages continually popped up to complain of this fact. Over time, I've learned to ignore these messages and go on doing my daily work without much thought of the possible implications.
Then, things started to get odd. I was running our application, WebWatchBot, to perform some simple tests of various websites and servers, when I started to get messages from the application that database connectivity was lost, which is a message that pops up to inform the user that the connection is forcibly dropped by SQL Server. After a few moments, the connection to the database was re-established and the message went away. Since I was actually working with SQL Server, I thought it was an anomoly, so I continued on. Then, it happened again. And again. Then, I noticed that the "database connectivity lost" message started to coincide with the wireless connection's (connection B) inability to connect with a wireless network.
Why would this be happening? The database and application are on the same exact computer. The connection to the database is via ODBC drivers over tcp/ip, but why would connection B affect this?

I have a child package where the ConnectionString property of a Connection Manager is set by a Parent Package Variable Configuration. I set up a script task that brings up a message box with the value of the ConnectionString property right before the dataflow task.
MessageBox.Show(Dts.Connections["CPU_*"].ConnectionString.ToString());When I run the parent package, the message box shows that the connection string is changing with every iteration, but in the dataflow it always draws the data from the same source.
The connection manager is an ADO.Net type, RetainSameConnection is set to False, and I've been researching this for days.
(Update 2/23/2015): To make this stranger, when I look at the diagnostic logs, they tell me that when the new connections are being opened they are using the new connection strings.
Dear members,I'am thinking about the "best" way to connect to my sql-server viaADO.Net (if there is a best way).My application uses the sql-server very intensively. At the momentevery database-operation opens a connection, executes and then closesthe connection.Another way would be to use only a single connection to the database, which is opened when the application starts. What do you think is the better way to get a high performing sqlserver: using one single application connection vs. using oneconnection for every operation?Cheers, Sebastian
I have two machines, the one has Windows 2003 server and the other has Windows Xp Pro on.
The 2003 one has SQL Standard Edition 2000 on where as the XP Pro has MSDE 2000.
I'm trying to run a windows based app from the 2003 server and it connects to a database on the XP Pro PC.
When running the application i keep getting the following exception:
"A Transport-Level error has occured when sending the request to the server (Provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available)
After using Preformance monitor on the XP machine it seems that when the app starts and the user logins in it make a SQL connection but then the connection is lost then the exception pops up. then i click continue and try it again then it works, then a couple of secs when using the system it pops up again. The Performance Monitor Test shows that the SQL connection keep being lost. The network is fine. its has something to do with SQL and Named Pipes and stuff.
When running the app on the Xp machine and the Connection is made to the 2003 machine there is no problem.
There are other connection made to the Windows XP Machine but i doubt that it affects the app.
I'm having trouble receiving a file via FTP. I've done this before, so I'm surprised how much trouble I'm having. I'm getting the error:
[Connection manager "FTP Connection"] Error: An error occurred in the requested FTP operation. Detailed error description: The connection with the server was reset .
I've tried to FTP via Internet Explorer 6, and it works fine. I've tried going into the "FTP Connection" and putting in the password, and clicking "test connection"... works fine again.
Any ideas for me to troubleshoot? I've shut down the package and re-opened it, but to no avail.
I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
I'm having a strange problem with this but I know (and admit) that the problem is on my PC and nowhere else. My firewall was causing a problem because I was unable to PING the database server, switching this off gets a successful PING immediately. The most useful utility to date is running netstat -an in the command window. This illustrates all the connections that are live and ports that are being listed to. I can establish a connection both by running

Both these utilities show as establishing a connection in netstat so I am able to connect the database server every time, this worked throughout yesterday and has continued this morning.
The problem is when I attempt to use SQL Server Management Studio. When I attempt to connect to tcp:sql5.hostinguk.net, 1433 nothing shows in netstat at all. There is an option to encrypt the connection in the connection properties tab in management studio, when I enable this I do get an entry in netstat -an, see below:
Amost as if it's trying the different ports but you get this time_wait thing. The error message is more meaningful and hopefull because I get:
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I would expect this as the DNS has not been advised to encrypt the conection.
This is much better than the : Login failed for user 'COX10289'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) that I get, irrespective of whether I enter a password or not.
This is on a XP machine trying to connect to the remote webhosting company via the internet.
I can ping the server
I have enabled shared memory and tcp/ip in protocols, named pipes and via are disabled
I do not have any aliases set up
No I do not force encryption
I wonder if you have any further suggestions to this problem?
I have a package that uses a for loop to iterate through an unknown amount of excel files and pull their data into a table. However, there will be cases when the file is corrupted or has some sort of problem so that either the transformation will fail or the excel data source will fail with an oledb connection error. Could anyone suggest a clean way to trap these errors? Specifically, the "Cannot Aquire Connection from Connection Manager", which is the excel connection.

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"... The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.
I have a setup where I need to replicate the database which is actually subscribing from another database. The current setup is all in SQL Server 2000. I need to now setup a Distrbutor on a SQL server 2005 and publish the database using this distributor to another server on SQL server 2000.
Has anybody done this before. If yes what will I need to check. Can you please let me know :-
1) SQL Server 2000 which SP should be installed to support this enviroment.
2) SQL Server 2005 which SP should be installed to support this environment.
We have a SQL Server 2000 ent edition sp4 with 3 small databases and one 4 GB database which is REPLICATED The Server has been bouncing like a yoyo today because of a disk controller problem and I am preparing to move the Instance to a whole new server this afternoon. The new Server will have the same IP and name as the original server.
Any suggestions for the easiest or most seamless way to make this happen? preferably using Backup and Restore since they plan on taking the old server down completely and then building a new server with the same name and IP ... any suggestions would be appreciated.
Can I connect from a SQL Server 2005 database to a SQL Server 2000 database, without establishing a linked server connection.
I need to fire a SELECT query on a SQL Server 2000 database, but don't want to add it as a linked server. Is there any way I can do this or its not possible??
Transactional replication allows updatable subscriptions where changes at the subscriber are replicated up to the publisher, this can happen via Immediate Updating subscriptions, Queue subscriptions and P2P (new in SQL 2005), all forms of Transactional replication.
Any compared document between merge replication and Transactional with updatable subscribtion ?
