SQL2005 Enterprise Database Engine Performance Features (versus Standard)

Feb 21, 2007

Can anyone comment on the engine performance difference between SQL2005 Enterprise Edition versus Standard? I'm talking generalized performance of the engine and not admin features (parallel index operations) or scaled-storage (partitioning)

The marketing literature makes note of two things:

Enterprise can use more then 4 processors

Enhanced read-ahead and scan (super scan)
(note: I cannot find anything about this 'feature')
One un-noted Feature:

only Enterprise supports 'lock pages in memory'

We are in the process of migrating from SQL2000 to SQL2005 in an OLTP environment. Based on the marketing literature; I would have chosen SQL2005-standard. But based on our limited testing, we are seeing some strange differences.

Query Performance

With MaxDOP=1 and using a large batch query (select top 1500000); SQL2005-Enterprise is twice as fast as SQL2005-Standard.

(Note: this difference persists regardless of lock-pages-in-memory setting)

CPU Utilization

In addition, taskmgr shows that SQL2005-Enterprise uses a single processor at ~90%. While SQL2005-Standard shows a single processor at ~20%.

Lock Behavior

We are also seeing lock-behavior differences. A single DML statement that attempts to modify ~5000 rows will cause Table-locks on SQL2005-Standard but obtain normal row-locks on SQL2005-Enterprise.

These empirical differences make me wonder if the engine codebase is fundamentally different between the two?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Performance Difference Between SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition And Enterprise Edition

Dec 15, 2006

Dear All,We have a database which contains many tables which have millions ofrecords. When We attach the database with MS SQL Server 2005 StandardEdition Server and run some queries (having joins, filters etc.) thenthey take very long time to execute while when We execute same querieson Enterprise Edition then they run 10 times faster than on standardedition. Our database does not use any features which are present in EnterpriseEdition and not present in Standard Edition. We want to know what arethe differences between Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition forperformance. Why should we go for Enterprise Edition when StandardEdition has all the features required. We are presently using evaluation versions of SQL Server 2005 Standardand Enterprise Editions. Thanks and regards,Nishant Sainihttp://www.simplyjava.com

Turn Off Enterprise Features In Developer Edition?

Feb 9, 2007

Hi,

We have 2005 Standard Edition in our production environment and 2005 Developer Edition in dev. Recently we started using a feature in dev only to realize it was an Enterprise specific feature when we wanted to move it to prod. Is there any way to turn off the enterprise features in developer edition so it behaves just like standard edition?

Thanks

ADO.NET DATAVIEWS VERSUS SQL ENGINE

Jan 4, 2006

Hi All,
Any suggestions / views / help on below question would be welcomed.
I am building an asp.net 2.0 application with sql 2005 express as back end. My back end has 3 major tables which are:
tblArticles - saves basic info on articles posted by user (like articleid, title, short desc, rating, views, etc)
tblCategories - saves various categories and their hierarchies (id, parented, name, etc)
tblArticleCategories - saves info on which articles fall in which categories (like articleid, categoryid)
as of now, i am caching all rows from the first 2 tables, but i am in a bit of doubt for caching the third table (tblArticleCategories), although data in this table wont change very often and also this table will just have 2 columns and not many rows as well and this is a good target for caching,
but the reason I am in a bit of doubt to cache this table is, when my website visitor clicks on any category link in the category tree view, I need to use an inner join across all these 3 tables to locate and return all articles found in that particular category.
But I can do the same thing without hitting the database as I already have 2 of the required 3 tables in my cache, I can simply add the third table to my cache and then using the dataview objects rowfilter property on these 3 cached tables, I can very well get the appropriate results.
But I wonder which of the 2 methods would you prefer and suggest, I mean do you feel that just to save hits against the database, I am going to far and doing a lot of crap using the dataview (which might not be as efficient as sql engine) or you feel that the inefficiency of the dataview will still win compared to the cost of hitting the database for this
Thanks in advance, bye take care

Enterprise Manager Versus Sp_spaceused

Jun 29, 1999

When comparing the data space available (Edit Database dialog within Enterprise Manager) to sp_spaceused, I occasionally generate numbers that have discrepancies.

Example
Enterprise Manager shows data space available = 160.43 MB
sp_spaceused (Unallocated space = 397 MB) less log space (200 MB) = 197 MB

Even after I run (sp_spaceused @updateusage = 'true'), the problem is not resolved. Are there any known issues with space being calculated incorrectly from within Enterprise Manager? Should I not rely on Enterprise Manager and stick with sp_spaceused to find out database usage? Are there any other methods which will resolve this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Karl

Problems Upgrading Database Engine 2005 Express To 2005 Standard

Nov 7, 2006

I'm having problems upgrading the SQL express 2005 database engine services to 2005 standard 32 bit. I've also tried to install sql 2005 service pack 1 "SQLServer2005SP1-KB913090-x86-ENU.exe" and it did the same thing, upgraded everything except the database engine services. After that I tried another install from the run command "Z:Setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1" and that failed at the same place as well.

My windows version is is 5.2 (build 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447:service pack 1

Below is a copy of the error log file from the install, any help would be greatly appreciated.

View Performance Versus SQL Statement

Nov 1, 2000

I have a complex(long) SQL statement inside of a stored procedure which feeds several variables from 2 tables. Something like

Select @var1, @var2, etc from
table1, table2 where
table1.id = table2.id

Is there any advantage to creating a view for this statement
and selecting from that, even though this resides in a stored procedure?

Int Versus Char Primay Key Performance

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,My company has a scenario where we would like to change the data typeof an existing primary key from an integer to a char, but we areconcerned about the performance implications of doing so. The scriptfor the two tables that we need to modify is listed below. TableFR_Sessions contains a column named TransmissionID which is currentlyan integer. This table contains about 1 million rows of data. TableFR_VTracking table also contains the TransmissionID as part of it'sprimary key and it contains about 35 millions rows of data. These twotables are frequently joined on TransmissionID (FR_Sessions is theparent). The TransmissionID column is used primarily for joins and isnot typically displayed. We need like to change the TransmissionID data type from int tochar(7), and I had a few questions:1) Would this introduce significant performance degradation? I haveread that char keys/indexes are slower than int/numeric.2) Are there collation options (or any other optimizations) that wecould use to minimize the performance hit of the char(7)...if so whichones?I am a software architect by trade, not a database guru, so please goeasy on my if I overlooked something obvious :)Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.Thanks,Tim-------------------CREATE TABLE [FR_Sessions] ([TransmissionID] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[PTUID] [varchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,[PortNum] [numeric](6, 0) NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_FR_Sessions_PortNum]DEFAULT (0),[CloseStatus] [varchar] (20) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,[RecvBytes] [int] NULL ,[SendBytes] [int] NULL ,[EndDT] [datetime] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_FR_Sessions_EndDT] DEFAULT(getutcdate()),[LocalEndDT] [datetime] NULL ,[TotalTime] [int] NULL ,[OffenderID] [numeric](9, 0) NULL ,[UploadStatus] [char] (1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOTNULL CONSTRAINT [DF_FR_Sessions_UploadStatus] DEFAULT ('N'),[SchedBatchID] [numeric](18, 0) NULL ,[SWVersion] [varchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,[DLST] [bit] NULL ,[TZO] [smallint] NULL ,[Processed] [bit] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_FR_Sessions_Processed]DEFAULT (0),[CallerID] [varchar] (13) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,[PeerIP] [varchar] (16) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,[XtraInfo] [varchar] (1024) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,[IdType] [char] (1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,CONSTRAINT [PK_FR_Sessions] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED([TransmissionID]) WITH FILLFACTOR = 90 ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY]CREATE TABLE [FR_VTracking] ([TransmissionID] [int] NOT NULL ,[FrameNum] [int] NOT NULL ,[LatDegrees] [float] NOT NULL ,[LonDegrees] [float] NOT NULL ,[Altitude] [float] NOT NULL ,[Velocity] [float] NOT NULL ,[NumPositions] [smallint] NOT NULL ,[NavMode] [smallint] NOT NULL ,[Units] [smallint] NOT NULL ,[GPSTrackingID] [numeric](18, 0) IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[dtStamp] [datetime] NULL ,CONSTRAINT [PK_FR_VTracking] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED([TransmissionID],[FrameNum]) WITH FILLFACTOR = 90 ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY]

Query Performance With DateTime Versus Int Condition

Jul 10, 2007

Good day,

The following query performs acceptably (2 seconds against 126,000,000 rows in the main table):

SELECT Count(*)

FROM

Message1_2_3 INNER JOIN

VDMVDO ON Message1_2_3.VDMVDO_ID = VDMVDO.VDMVDO_ID INNER JOIN

NMEA ON VDMVDO.NMEA_ID = NMEA.NMEA_ID

WHERE

NMEA.NMEA_ID BETWEEN 14000000 AND 14086000 AND

VDMVDO.RepeatIndicator = 0 AND

NMEA.SentenceFormatterID = 'VDM'

When we change the first condition from an Int column to a DateTime as in:

NMEA.TimeDate BETWEEN CONVERT(DATETIME, '2007-07-09 8:30:00', 102) AND CONVERT(DATETIME, '2007-07-09 9:30:00', 102)

the query performance falls to 14 seconds, even though both columns are indexed and a similar number of rows are found. When the select clause changes from a simple Count to a complex Max expression, response time falls to over a minute!

Any thoughs on optimizing the DateTime search would be greatly appreciated...

Performance Issues On Sql 2005 Versus Sql 2000 - AGAIN!

May 15, 2008

I was hoping I wouldn't be another poster with performance issues after migrating to SQl 2005 from SQL 2000 but here I am.

I am in the process of testing out our databases on Sql Server 2005 for migration from SQL Server 2000 and there are certain portions of code that have been affected negatively. I have read thru many of the posts here and have tried out most of the recommendations. I will start out with things I've done and then provide the actual SQL.

1) I have rebuilt all indexes ( using the DBCC REINDEX using the table option).
2) Updated the db engine to latest hot fix (build 3239) that addresses speed related fixes.
3) I also ran sp_createstats using the 'fullscan' option to create stats on all columns of all tables (minus indexed columns)
4) Since nothing seemed to work, I even ran UPDATE STATICS with FULL SCAN on all tables even though I did not need it as the REBUILD woudl have created stats. But I was willing to try anything.

I have confirmed that the execution plans are different even though the data on both sql 2000 and sql 2005 are identical (i put a copy on 2005). The plans themselves are huge as the queries are huge. Here is the query.

SELECT InterimView.* ,TestView.*

FROM View_LabDataExport_TestFormData_55 TestView
RIGHT OUTER JOIN ( SELECT ReqView.*, CDView.*
FROM View_LabDataExport_FormData_55 ReqView
LEFT OUTER JOIN View_LabDataExport_FormData_CD_55 CDView
ON ( CDView.DB_SubjectID_CD = ReqView.DB_SUbjectID )

) InterimView

ON ( InterimView.DB_FormID = TestView.DB_FormID_T AND

InterimView.DB_LabSampleID = TestView.DB_LabSampleID_T )

The above query takes abotu 8 secs to run on 2000 and about 1 minute to run on 2005. This is for a small dataset and on larger datasets this is only going to more pronounced ( as confirmed by other teams that have already migrated in my company). Another point worth mentioning might be if I remove the TestView.* from the select list, it works in 5 to 6 seconds. Is there an issue with Sql 2005 and a large number of columns or anything of that sort? On 2000, the time remains the same , about 8 seconds if I remove this from the select list.

Here is the statistics ion on 2005

One difference between the two is the work table that 2005 creates versus 2000. I can attach the plans but they are huge. I will attach it if you ask.

What I was looking for was suggestions on what I could do short of rewriting code or any suggestions in general.

FYI, this has also been posted on the SQL Server Engine forum.

Thanks

Analysis :: Cube Performance Versus Many-to-Many Dimensions

Sep 22, 2015

I have a cube with 2 many-to-many dimensions where a special mdx query needs about 5 seconds. When I resolve the many to many relationships by multiplying the data in the fact table the query needs 21 seconds.

In general do many-to-many dimensions slow down query performance of a cube?

Without the many-to-many dimensions of course the fact table has much more rows. Could this be the reason for the performance loss?

how to tweak query performance of a cube in general?

Sql2005 Express With Standard

Hello, can I run the express edition on my desktop and test web site with it, but then deploy the same app to my webhost and have it use SQL2005 standard?  (They don't support the express edition.)
I'm new to SQL2005 and am curious.  In fact, I still don't totally understand if express is installed or just a file like access.  :)

Query Performance Hard Coded Value Versus Table Driven

Nov 6, 2014

I want to be able to return the rows from a table that have been updated since a specific time. My query returns results in less than 1 minute if I hard code the reference timestamp, but it keeps spinning if I load the reference timestamp in a table. See examples below (the "Reference" table has only one row with a value 2014-09-30 00:00:00.000)

select * from A where ReceiptTS > '2014-09-30 00:00:00.000'

select * from A where ReceiptTS > (select ReferenceTS from Reference)

SQL2005 Trial To Standard Edition

May 8, 2008

I have downloaded Microsoft SQL 2005 trial and now have this running perfectly with our main database. Before I did this I checked to make sure that you could indeed unlock trial with a valid number, and the MSDN site said yes it can be done. I have now purchased the full Standard edition, and wish to enter the product key into the trial version to unlock. How do I do this ???. I have spent 3 hours on the phone today with over 11 different departments, and they all give me conflicting info. Eopen say it cant be done and that I have to uninstall the trial, and then completely re-install STD edition (I DEFINATELY DONT WANT THIS !!!!)

They put me to tech support who say it can be done, but I have to pay for this information ...Excuse me but I yesterday paid over £4000 for the software and now they wont help me unless I pay for support !!!!! http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx says it is an acceptable upgrade path but dont say how to do it. .

Eopen say this is not true !!!

How do I unlock SQL 2005 Trial version and down grade it it to a full blown STD version with my licence number I have. Can someone please tell me how this can be done.

If anyone knows, can they please email me at rob.wheeler@ehbp.com with instructions.

Thanks,

Rob

Backup Strategy - SQL2005 Tools Versus 3rd Party Tools

Jun 1, 2007

I am running SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise under Windows 2003 x64 Enterprise. My current backup strategy uses T-SQL jobs run by SQL Agent (writes out *.bak files) and then I have an Integration Services job that copies the *.bak files to our NAS device. I have performed a restore without issue. The jobs are all automated every four hours via SQL Agent. Is this a sound strategy or are there additional benefits to using 3rd party tools? If so, what are the advantages and which tool provides them?

SQL STANDARD/ ENTERPRISE

Dec 27, 2007

How are you, I was wondering if I could uninstall and reintall sql server standard and upgrade to enterprise edition.

What i mean..

We have 10 computers running sql server standard. We want to upgrade them to enterprise edition bc there are another 10 machines with enterprise.

Would we have to uninstall standard edition before installing enterprise.
Or could we just install enterprise edition over standard

Has anyone done this? Compatibilty issue?? We are doing it remotly as well, some machines in NC, some in Vegas, some in Cali. So all will be done through RDC.

any and all help will be great

Install Problem With SQL2005 Standard. Error 2908

Mar 25, 2008

I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 on a Server 2003 Enterprise edition SP2 and fully Patched with all critical updates, including .net 3.5 Additional Information, this is on a Virtuial Server.
When I try to install it fails near the beginning and the log file contains the following.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.1399.06
==============================
OS Version : Microsoft Windows Server 2003 family, Service Pack 1 (Build 3790)

Product Version : 9.00.1399.06
Install : Failed

Error Number : 2908
====================================================================================

After doing some search engine digging I found some referances to simuilar problems being caused by .net. I tried uninstalling first 3.5, then 3.0 then 2.0sp1, at which point the install worked with only one error that SQL Management studio was unable to register (A bunch of black lines) although the sql installation seems to work. I then reinstalled .net 3.5 (Which also reinstalls 3.0 and updates 2.0 to SP1. Again S!QL seems to be healthy....
My Questions are:
1) is there a better way to do this???
2) If I do it this way do you see any l;ong term problems?

Standard Vs Enterprise Edition

Feb 19, 2004

Recently, I worked on installing SQL Server 2000 into a clustered environement. I installed the Standard edition, tested it, and everything works fine. However, in reading some information on Enterprise Edition from Microsoft, I see where it says to install Enterprise Edition when using a clustered, or failover, environement. Can anyone give me a layman's explanation as to why this is? Everything is functioning just fine with the Standard Edition installed.

I really don't want to re-install if I don't have to.

Thanks in advance.
