SQL2005 Memory And Paging File Issue

Currently, we have the following setup...
SQL 2005 Std, 8gb ram, boot ini switches for /PAE and /3GB, AWE enabled and the min/max memory settings for a single instance respectively set to 1024 and 7168. Performance-wise the system is a bit slower than before (with SQL2000) and there seems to be alot of paging. The SQL service is also running under the "LocalSystem". In this case, do I need to specify the local "SYSTEM" to have rights to "Lock pages in memory"? I have a feeling there is a misconfiguration somewhere. Can someone point me in the right direction? Anyone knows what the size should the Paging File be for a 8 P 16 Core Opteron server with 128GB memory installed? The server will be running SQL 05 Ent and IIS, on top of Win2k3 R2 x64 Ent.
Please also give the reason for that size.

This morning msmdsrv.exe looked like the following in Task Manager:
Memory Usage: 600,000 K
VM Size: 2,500,000 K
If I understand correctly, that means that a good deal of SSAS memory has been swapped to disk by the OS. Is there any way to prevent this? (I have read about using the Lock Pages In Memory privilege at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179301.aspx which lets SQL prevent the OS from paging sqlservr.exe memory. I don't suppose there's an equivalent SSAS setting.)
In particular, the symptom I'm seeing is that after we finish processing, all that paged memory has to be loaded back into memory before the transaction can be committed. Committing the transaction is usually very quick. But when most of the SSAS process memory is pages, it takes quite a while, during which I can see the Memory Usage number in Task Manager growing. (I don't think it's a blocked transaction commit.)

Are there any *negative* consequences to SQL Server 2000 Standardpaging to disk more often if one reduces the amount of available RAMfrom 2.0 GB to 1.5 GB to give the OS and other apps enough RAM, otherthan things possibly being "slower" and whatever wear and tear couldhappen to the disk drives??Or is it better to add in more RAM per se to bring the server up to 4GB (Win2k3 Svr SP1)?? Summary: We host reports off of one server that are accessed and refreshed 24/7/365. On a daily basis, I receive calls about reports taking several minutes to run IF they run at all. (normally these reports take seconds). There has yet to be an actual "error message" associated with this behavior. When I check the server at these times, I will find that w3wp.exe process is taking up about 4G and is causing paging. It seems that once it gets to that point, it will kill itself and all goes back to normal. However, it's a slow death and is impacting business.
We're using MSRS 2005. Hosting the reports is the job of this server--no other applications are hitting it. There is a development SQL db on the box, but not in use at this time. The datasources in most cases are stored procedures housed on another box. The web interface (for end users running the report) is hosted on a third server.
Any thoughts?

We have several 2005 servers with "Maximum server memory" set to 214 gig, which I believe is the default at installation time. I am told that this means "use all the memory there is including paging." Well, this is nuts but the servers seem to work fine with this setting no matter how much physical memory they have.
One of our 2005 servers recently started paging like crazy, so I reduced "Maximum server memory" to 6000 and the paging disappeared (server has 8 gig of physical memory) and the server appears happy.
I can not explain why only this one server has this paging issue and the others do not. Should I be setting "Maximum server memory" on all my servers? Are there other considerations which might cause the server to eat-up all the memory? As far as I know no other applications run on this box.

I operate MsSql server with Maximum Server Memory.
The server has 2GB main memory and Maximum Server Memory is 1GB.
If sqlserv.exe use 1GB main memory, new query is not cached.
I think, sql server release pages in main memory to cache new query. but no release.
By above reason, performance of new query is not good.
How can sql server cache new query?

Hi,
I've been running SQL2000 for the past few years with 2gb of RAM and just recently upgraded to SQL2005 with 4 gigs.
My old system would always have the sqlservr.exe process using as much RAM as it could, this number would never really drop, maybe if it did it was in the single digit percentages.
I was just setting up new maintenance plans on my server, and I noticed from the time I started to the time I finished the SQLSERVR.EXE process dropped from using 3.5gb of RAM to just 1.5GB of RAM right now. It's pretty steadily going up too.
Does sql2005 have some new advanced memory management features? Did creating a sql maintenance plan release some memory? Did sqlserver crash ? I've never seen this before.

Ive just started getting this on a stable application thats used a datareader on millions of records.
Not sure where to got from here and I can't find anyone else whos getting the failure during the processing.
I could disable shared memory protocol but that seems extreme. I'm on Sql Enterprise 9.00.2047. Maybe the process is hammering the server very hard? Personally I've rarely ever seen SQL be the cause of an error, only user config, bad disks or power issues.
I'm running the app again with SQL Profiler capturing "standard" events.
Just need it to blow up again.
I can run the app on another machine of course and I wouldn't get Shared Memory Provider being used. Maybe I ought to do that as well. At least if the error is not really in the Shared Memory I'd have another avenue to explore.

I hope these are pretty basic SQL Server management questions. I'm running a SP that uses a lot of memory. The server has about 8GB and it uses 7.95GB. When the memory usage goes up, so does the size of the paging file. I'm assuming the page file grows so it can write the memory contents to disk in the case of a crash. How necessary is this? It seems like any advantage I'd gain from working out of memory is lost because I'm working off the drive too.
Can I/should I turn this "feature" off?

First, I would like to apologize if this is in anyway not related to Transact-SQL. And I would greatly appreciate your help for this is an urgent requirement. I just have a batch file which performs an ftp. Now, if the ftp process aborts, i would like to send out a mail and page the on-call person. I am not sure how to do this - I mean how to send email and send message through pager. My batch file is called by the Windows scheduler.

Hi all,
I have scheduled a package to export data from the table to the execl file in the local directory, it work fine. However, when the next time you execute the package it give error on 'file already exists'. Prephap this is due to previously already created a file in the directory.
I try to use drop option in the ssis during creating the package for export, but the result still the same. I do not know the drop option is working, can someone tell me is that working fine? if not what is the solution or possible cause.

Hi All,
I am dealing with a lot of XML file data that I load in a SQL 2005 database using Integration Services. Let me give you a high level idea of I how I do it.
The way I do it is that a) I create a blank Integration Services Project, then b) In the "Control Flow" tab I put the "Data Flow Task" by simply dragging "Data Flow Task" on to the "Control Flow" page. c) Then in the "Data Flow" tab I drag the "XML Source" as my data flow source, and drag "OLEB Destination" as my data flow destination; then I create a connection between the "XML Source" and "OLEDB Destination" and point the "XML Source" to my XML file, and I point the "OLEDB Destination" to the Database where I want to load the XML file. I configure the mappings etc if needed and run the package. This works fine for me. But if the XML file is large it takes hours to load the data. I am dealing with huge size XML files and I want an alternative in Inegration Services probably "Bulk Insert Task" but dont know how to use it.
Can someone please explain how I can use bulk insert as a fast alternative to load the data. Please list the steps.

Dear all I create this html file on the fly in my asp.net application abd what i would like to do is to store it inside my sql2005 database. What would be the best way?The html file itself is not really big. Probably not more then 600 - 800 characters most. I was thinking the text type fields of the database and then when retreiving it dump it inside in a file and save the file with html extention. Are there any better sugestions? What will happen to the SQL data (DB) when the disk that holds the paging file crashes?

First, a couple of important bits of information. Until last week, I had never touched SISS, and therefore, I know very little about it. I just never had the need to use it...until now. I was able to convert my first 3 flat files to SQL2005 tables by right clicking on "SISS Package" and choosing "SISS Import and Export Wizard". That is the extent of my knowledge! So please, please, please be patient with me and be as descriptive as possible.
I thought I could attach some sample files to this post, but it doesn't look like I can. I'll just paste the information below in two separate code boxes. The first code box is the flat file specifications and the second one is a sample single line flat file similar to what I'm dealing with (the real flat file is over 2 gigs).

As you can see, each entry could have any number of records and multiples of some of the record types, with one exception, every entry must have a "01" record and can only have one "01" record. Oh, and each record has a length of 400.
I need to get this information into a SQL 2005 database so I can create a front end for accessing the data. Originally, I wanted one line for each account and have null values listed for entries that don't have a specific record. Now that I've looked at the data again, that doesn't look like a good idea. I think a better way to do it would be to create 5 different tables, one for each record type. However, records 2 through 5 don't have anything I can make a primary key. So here are my questions...
Is it possible to make 5 tables from this one file, one table for each of the record types?
If so, can I copy the Account number in record 01, position 13-19 in each of the subsequent record types (that way I could link the tables as needed)?
Can this be done using the SISS Import and Export Wizard to create the package? If not, I'm going to need some very basic step by step instructions on how to create the package.
Is SISS the best way to do this conversion or is there another program that would be better to use?
I know this is a huge question and I appreciate the help of anyone who boldly decides to help me! Thank you in advance and I welcome anyone's suggestions!

I have new bought the SQL server 2005 enterprise, but it have 2 CDs, so what are the differences between CD1 and CD2? and so which one should i install first? or is it necessary to install both two or just need to install one of them?
And about my original sql 2000 database, can i just attach it's MDF file into the sql 2005 engine, or which import wizard can load the sql 2000 MDF into sql 2005? or do i need to keep the sql 2000 engine before do this?

I am trying to use the results of a query to build an XML file (this will eventually be data from a number of RDBMS's and will undergo transformations and unions prior to being saved as a package variable).
I have saved the results of my query to a result set variable (ADOResultSet) using the Recordset Destination.
I then try to use a script task to read the variable and create an XML file. I get a runtime error Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to class type 'System.Data.DataSet'.

Hi All,
I have seen some different behaviors when I am writing SQL Server compact edition Database file into SD Memory card or any user removable storage media.
The following Steps for reproducing these behaviors.
1. Set your database location is in the SD Memory card.
2. Create a database and establish session.
3. Writing first record into the database is done
4. Remove your SD card manually from the system
5. Try to write a Second record into the database
6. You will get the error from this "SqlCeWriteRecordProps" API call - This is fine.
7. Put your SD card back into the system.
8. Writing Second record again into the database is done - This is fine.
So far the behaviors are good after that
9. Remove your SD card manually from the system again
10. Try to write a Third record into the database
11. You will suppose to get the error from this "SqlCeWriteRecordProps" API call but you won€™t get that error €“ I don€™t know why?
12. Then Try to write a Forth record into the database
13. You won't get any error from the API call "SqlCeWriteRecordProps" and return status is success.
14. Now put your SD card back into the system.
15. Then write Fifth record but this time its writing record Third, Fourth and Fifth into the database.
Note:
I am clearing (means Free) my record structure everything after calling this function "SqlCeWriteRecordProps". So I don€™t know why its wring Third, fourth and fifth record into the database.

We are hosting a 140 GB database on SQL Server Version 7 and Windows2000 Advanced Server on an 8-cpu box connected to a 15K rpm RAID 5SAN, with 4 GB of RAM (only 2 GB of which seem to be visible to theOS) and a 4 GB swap file. (The PeopleSoft CIS application will notpermit us to upgrade to SQL 2K.) We recently upgraded the server from4 to 8 cpus and the SAN disks from 10K to 15K drives. But we stillhave heavy SAN disk usage, sometimes at 100%, and read queues oftenaveraging 4 and peaking at 12.The CPUs are loaded at only 20-50%. (The politics are such that it iseasier to throw hardware at the problems.)We are looking into archiving, converting from RAID 5 to RAID 10, andat splitting the mdf file into several file groups in an attempt toget more disk heads into play. (We are also looking at rewriting theapplication to reduce the read volume and frequency.) Does anyone haveany other ideas?Incidentally, does swapfile get used when the physical memory equalsthe OS maximum? If the OS can only see 2 GB and we have 2 GB (actually4 GB) of memory, is the 4GB local swap file on the C drive unused?Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I just upgraded my SQL 2000 server to SQL2005. I forked out all that money, and now it takes 4~5 seconds for a webpage to load. You can see for yourself. It's pathetic. When I ran SQL2000, i was getting instant results on any webpage. I can't find any tool to optimize the tables or databases. And when I used caused SQL Server to use 100% cpu and 500+MB of ram. I can't have this.Can anyone give me some tips as to why SQL 2005 is so slow?

I am unable to install 32-bit SQL Server Integration Services on the server due to something that was left behind by the 64-bit version.
I've uninstalled SQL Server 2005 64-bit and when I try to install the 32-bit version of Integration Services, I get this error: "Failed to install and configure assemblies C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server90DTSTasksMicrosoft.SqlServer.MSMQTask.dll in the COM+ catalog. Error: -2146233087 Error message: Unknown error 0x80131501 Error descrition: FATAL: Could not find component 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Task.MessageQueueTask.ServCompMQTask' we just installed."
I can't seem to figure out how to resolve this problem with the COM+ and I can't remember if Integration Services is required.
Can anybody please advise?
