SQLCLR File System Access
May 11, 2006
I have just begun to delve into the SQLCLR objects in SQL Server 2005. I have created a simple VB function as a SQLFunction. Here's the code:
Imports System
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Server
Partial Public Class UserDefinedFunctions
<Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlFunction()> _
Public Shared Function FileDate(ByVal FilePath As String) As Date
Return FileDateTime(FilePath)
End Function
End Class
The function is run with this T-SQL:
declare @FileDate datetime
select @FileDate = dbo.FileDate('C:setup.bat)
select @FileDate
This works fine, but I had to set the Permission Level of the Visual Studio project to "Unsafe" rather than "External" in order to avoid the following error message:
A .NET Framework error occurred during execution of user defined routine or aggregate 'FileDate':
System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
Is there any way to avoid having to set the permission level to "Unsafe"? If not, what does "unsafe" mean in terms of overall system security? Is it acceptable to use on an internal LAN?
Thanks,
Ron

Throughout the course of this book and even before it I have come across conflicting information regarding how SQLCLR attempts to resolve system/CLR assembly references. For example, prior to my latest read thourgh April BOL 2005, I thought SQLCLR attempted to resolve these references implicity for you via the local machine's GAC. Yet here is what I found while trying to help another person in this forum yesterday in BOL...
Assembly Validation
SQL Server performs checks on the assembly binaries uploaded by the CREATE ASSEMBLY statement to guarantee the following:
The assembly binary is well formed with valid metadata and code segments, and the code segments have valid Microsoft Intermediate language (MSIL) instructions.
The set of system assemblies it references is one of the following supported assemblies in SQL Server: Microsoft.Visualbasic.dll, Mscorlib.dll, System.Data.dll, System.dll, System.Xml.dll, Microsoft.Visualc.dll, Custommarshallers.dll, System.Security.dll, System.Web.Services.dll, and System.Data.SqlXml.dll. Other system assemblies can be referenced, but they must be explicitly registered in the database.
For assemblies created by using SAFE or EXTERNAL ACCESS permission sets:
The assembly code should be type-safe. Type safety is established by running the common language runtime verifier against the assembly.
The assembly should not contain any static data members in its classes unless they are marked as read-only.
The classes in the assembly cannot contain finalizer methods.
The classes or methods of the assembly should be annotated only with allowed code attributes. For more information, see Custom Attributes for CLR Routines.
Besides the previous checks that are performed when CREATE ASSEMBLY executes, there are additional checks that are performed at execution time of the code in the assembly:
Calling certain Microsoft .NET Framework APIs that require a specific Code Access Permission may fail if the permission set of the assembly does not include that permission.
For SAFE and EXTERNAL_ACCESS assemblies, any attempt to call .NET Framework APIs that are annotated with certain HostProtectionAttributes will fail.
COULD SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME THE DEFENITE ANSWER ON HOW THIS WORKS!

I created a CLR function based on following VB code:
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Server
Public Partial Class SqlClrVB
<Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlFunction()> _
Public Shared Function GetTotalPhysicalMemory() As Integer
GetTotalPhysicalMemory = My.Computer.Info.TotalPhysicalMemory
End Function
End Class
The VB code was complied into a DLL called totalmem.dll and call following TSQL to map it into a SQL function:
create assembly totalmem from '!WORKINGDIR! otalmem.dll'
WITH PERMISSION_SET=UNSAFE
go
create function fnGetTotalMem()
returns int
as external name totalmem.SqlClrVB.GetTotalPhysicalMemory
go
When I call this function, it returned following error:
select dbo.fnGetTotalMem()
Msg 6522, Level 16, State 2, Line 0
A .NET Framework error occurred during execution of user defined routine or aggregate 'fnGetTotalMem':
System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
System.IO.FileNotFoundException:
at Microsoft.VisualBasic.MyServices.Internal.ContextValue`1.get_Value()
at My.MyProject.ThreadSafeObjectProvider`1.get_GetInstance()
at SqlClrVB.GetTotalPhysicalMemory()
.
Anyone knows why I'm hitting this error? I didn't reference any System.Web interface why it needs to load System.Web assembly? The same code runs OK if I compile it as a separate VB application out side of SQL Server 2005.
Thanks much,
Zhiqiang

Hi,
I have an SSIS package that has an "execute process task" that executes a batch file. The package has been deployed to the msdb database, and is called from a stored procedure using xp_cmdshell dtexec ...
I can execute the package just fine if I'm logged onto the server as a system administrator, by running the stored procedure from a query window.
However, if I log on to the server as a non-admin user, the package attempts to run, but breaks at the file system task, with "Access Denied". It can't run the batch file. It seems to be a permissions issue at the file system level.
How do I resolve this?? Please help.
Thanks

We are setting up a new box and when we deploy the cube we are getting the error "File system error: The following error occured during a file operation: Access is denied. ."
We are part of an AD group that is a member of the administrators group on the box, and it looks like we have rights to the data directory where AS deploys cube data to. The account that AS service runs as is also an administrator on the box. It is a domain account. The cube does have one assembly - might that be the problem? We have set up a few boxes in the past without problems - we didn't have control over how this box was setup, so obviously we are missing a permission. If anyone has any insights / ideas, I'm all ears.
Thanks!

Just wondering which scenarios is suitable to use SQLCLR. Any kind of data access is not recommended I guess. Only things that cannot be easily done in TSQL should be done in SQLCLR but why? Can't those things be done in app layer itself? Scenarios recommended for SQL CLR:
- External data access like filesystem, registry etc
- Complex calculation
- Recursion without data access (this can be implemented with CTE for data access)
If data access with SQL CLR is not recommended why should CLR should be even used and logic reside in database layer.. it makes no sense to me. Any thoughts??

I had few databases developed in SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. I have detached all the databases and stopped developing anything new other than taking reqular backup of detached .mdf and .ldf files. I installed Vista on the other Hard drive that corrupted my XP installation drive letters so I had to reinstall XP OS. I have reinstalled SQL 2005 Dev edition. Now I am trying to attach the database it is giving error of Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". I tried to copy those .mdf and .Ldf files through windows explorer and it is not letting me copy past in the other place. I am getting Access denied from OS. I have about 5 databases and only one has this problem.
What is going on and how do I solve this? Is the OS has locked the file? My home computer is not in a domain. I tried to right click the file to see if I can set access permission on the file. There is no such security options. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Vijay

I am facing a issue with bulk upload on Test Server.
Issue: When running Openrowset command from SQL server other that Test Server query runs fine when trying to run the same command from Test Server it gives error.
Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot bulk load because the file "\ServerNameinputFileName.csv" could not be opened. Operating system error code 5(Access is denied.).
For example: If the command is run from System A connecting to SQL Server instance on Test Server Test Server it gives this error. If the same command with same rights is run from any other SQL server instance say Dev1 its running fine.
If the command is run from Test Server connecting to any SQL Server instance including Test Server it is running fine.
Tried: 1) Given the read/write rights on shared folder, to user under which the SQL server service is running on Test Server
2) Given the read/write rights on shared folder to everyone.
Query:
SELECT DISTINCT * FROM OPENROWSET
(
BULK '\ServerNameinputFileName.csv',
FORMATFILE='\ServerNameFormat.xml'
)
AS FileList
Please provide me with some solution. What can be the reason for such behaviour?

I am trying to find a solution to my woes creating CLR activation stored procedure that references Enterprise library data access dlls. Does anyone know best practices to deploy .NET 2.0 assemblies as SQLCLR. I am using VS2005 SqlClrProject to deploy my .NET 2.0 assemblies to Sql Server and it fails with error such as "Assembly was not found in the sql catalog". If I manually try to load a referenced assembly within SqlServer by browsing to the target location, like for example, System.Management.dll it fails with similar error, trying to resolve its dependencies. Even if I manage to walk through the dependency tree and resolve it to the final dependent dll, I am only able to load it in "UNSAFE" mode. Any recommendations, suggestions and feedback are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Hello all,
I am running into an interesting scenario on my desktop. I'm running developer edition on Windows XP Professional (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Developer Edition). OS is autopatched via corporate policy and I saw some patches go in last week. This machine is also a hand-me-down so I don't have a clean install of the databases on the machine but I am local admin.
So, starting last week after a forced remote reboot (also a policy) I noticed a few of the databases didn't start back up. I chalked it up to the hard shutdown and went along my merry way. Friday however I know I shut my machine down nicely and this morning when I booted up, I was in the same state I was last Wenesday. 7 of the 18 databases on my machine came up with
FCB:pen: Operating system error 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.) occurred while creating or opening file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTest.mdf'. Diagnose and correct the operating system error, and retry the operation.
and it also logs
FCB:pen failed: Could not open file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTest.mdf for file number 1. OS error: 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.).
I've caught references to the auto close feature being a possible culprit, no dice as the databases in question are set to False. Recovery mode varies on the databases from Simple to Full. If I cycle the SQL Server service, whatever transient issue it was having with those files is gone.
As much as I'd love to disable the virus scanner, network security would not be amused. The data and log files appear to have the same permissions as unaffected database files. Nothing's set to read only or archive as I've caught on other forums as possible gremlins. I have sufficient disk space and the databases are set for unrestricted growth.
Any thoughts on what I could look at? If it was everything coming up in RECOVERY_PENDING it's make more sense to me than a hit or miss type of thing I'm experiencing now.

HI ,
This is a problem I encountered when I had to detach a database file (type .mdf):
1) I went to the MS SQL Management Server Studi and detached my database file successfully from a connection called Workhorse.
2) I needed to place the .mdf database file into a zip file in order to put it on a remote server. I did this using Shared Portal. This was also successful
3) However when I tried reattaching the database file, I got this error:
CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5A(Access denied.) while attempting to open or create the physical file "CProgram FilesMSSQL ServerMSSQLData<databasename>.mdf'
Q) The database file and log file (ldf) exist in the correct directory so I don't know what happened. Can any one help?
Thanks much

Hi -
I have an File System Task that copies a file from one directory ot another. When I hard code the target directory (c:dirfile.txt) it works fine. When I change it to a virtual directory (\serverdirfile.txt) I get a security error:
[File System Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Access to the path '\gracehbtest oS2TMM_Live_Title_000002.xml' is denied.".
Where do I change the security settings?

I'm copying files to a folder with the naming convention as follows in the source folder:
CM_ABC_MY_TEST.txt
In the destination folder, this filename needs to appear as:
CM_XYZ_MY_TEST.txt
In my File System Task, I'm pretty sure I'm going to need an expression with a replace, substring, etc. But am having a hard time nailing down the exact syntax.

Does anyone know how to do this using variables? Everytime I try it, I get the
Error: Failed to lock variable for read access with error 0xc00100001.
I also tried it writing a script and still the same error. If I hard code the values into the variables it works fine but I will be running this everday so that it will pull in the current date along with the filename. So the value of the variables will change everyday. Here is my expression:
@[User::Variable] +(DT_WSTR,4) YEAR( GETDATE() )+"0"+(DT_WSTR,2) MONTH( GETDATE() ) + (DT_WSTR,2) DAY( GETDATE() )
The result:
C:Documents and SettingsmroushDesktopOSU20060818
the 20060818 part will change everyday ie.(tomorrow will be 20060819, next day 20060820 and so on.)

I am having an issue with the File System Task.
I was wondering if there is a way to 'Move File' with the File System Task inside of a For Each Loop container but to dynamically set the Destination path variable.
Currently, this is what I have:
FileDestinationPath variable - set to C:TestFiles
FileSourcePath variable - set to C:TestFiles
FileNameAndLocation variable - set to blank
For Each Loop Container €“ Iterates through a folder C:TestFiles that has .txt files in it with dates in the file name. Ex: Test_09142006.txt. Sets the file path (fully qualified) to the Variable Mapping FileNameAndLocation.
Script Task (within For Each Loop, first step) €“ Sets the FileDestinationPath to the correct dated folder within C:TestFiles. For example, if the text files I want to move are for the 14th of September, it takes FileDestinationPath and appends the date folder to the end of it. The text files have a date in the file name (test_09142006.txt) and I am picking this apart (from FileNameAndLocation in the For Each Loop) to get the folder date. (dts.Variables(€œUser::FileDestinationPath€?).Value = dts.Variables(€œUser::FileDestinationPath€?).Value & €œ€? Month & €œ_€? & Day & €œ_€? & Year & €œ€?) which gives me €œC:TestFiles 9_14_2006€?.
File System Task (within For Each Loop, second step) €“ This is where the action is supposed to occur. I want it to take the FileDestinationPath and move the FileNameAndLocation file (from the For Loop) into this folder for each run.
Now as for my problem. I want this package to run everyday but it has to set the FileDestinationPath variable dynamically according to that day€™s date. Basically, how do I get this to work since I can€™t hard code the destination path variable from the start? I have the DestinationVariable on the File System Task set to the FileDestinationPath variable, after the script task builds it. However, using FileNameAndLocation as the SourceVariable on my File System Task tells me that the €œVariable €œFileNameAndLocation€? is used as a source or destination and is empty.€?
Let me know if I need to clarify further€¦...I may be missing something very simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Historically I've always written a VB script to copy a file from a sharepoint library. I don't like this method because I have to input a username & password in the script and maintain a config file.
Yesterday I was playing around with using a file system task. The sharepoint file has a UNC path so why not? I created a simple test package with a single file system task that copies the sharepoint file (addressed via UNC) to another network location. Package runs fine locally.
I try running on our utility server but am getting a "The file name [SHAREPOINT UNC PATH] specified in the connection was not valid" error. Package is running with a proxy on the server and the proxy account has the same permissions to the sharepoint site (so far as I can tell) as me.

The mdf file is still there, but when I try to attach it manually I get the "create file encountered operating system error 5 while attempting to open the physical file..." error.
Any way I can recover it?

What syntax do I use in a variable to make this work?

Ok so I have some dynamic sql to delete a file that is created via sql earlier on. It is to provision a copy of a database to an instance on link server. Everything works great and the files used to delete. Now, with no code changes it is throwing a syntax error. I do a print of what the dynamic sql is creating before executing and then I copy / paste what was generated into command prompt and guess what!! The file deletes.
Here is the result on screen:
@DeleteBackupFileStatement: DEL adas16.clients.advance.localwip$AvionteAP_Template_893.bak /Q
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Incorrect syntax near ''.
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Incorrect syntax near ''.
Here is the code that creates the statement:
SET @DeleteBackupFileStatement = NULL
BEGIN
SET @DeleteBackupFileStatement = 'DEL ' + LTRIM(RTRIM(@BackupFile)) + ' /Q'
END
PRINT '@DeleteBackupFileStatement: ' + cast(@DeleteBackupFileStatement as varchar(400))
BEGIN
EXEC adasdb.master.sys.Sp_executesql
@DeleteBackupFileStatement
END
END
The value of @BackupFile is simply the path of the file with the file name, everything in the prepared statement with the exception of DEL and the switch at the end.

Hi All,
I have a source files folder where the files generated everyday.
My goal is pick the latest file and copy this single file to another folder.
I used the Foreach loop container and got the latest file and stored the file name to a varible i.e. LatestFile
Then i want to use the File System Task to copy this to the destination.
On the beginning, I could not setup the Latestfile since I don't its name then, so when I setup the Source Connection property of the File system task, it is not allowed to leave the SourceVarible as blank!
Any suggestion?
Thanks

I have the following directories
\servershare
\serversharearchvie
I have a for each file loop and inside it a data flow that pulls from one of the flat files in the directory and then a file system task. If I choose the "Move File" option in the file system task to move the file to the archive directory, it fails with an access denied message. The access denied message occurs after a message saying file was successfully deleted. I am running this from BIDS right now and my local user can write delete etc in both the above directories. However, if I do a "copy file" in the file system task it seems to work. I think what is happening is it is deleting the file first and then trying to move it, but it no longer exists because it has been deleted--is this possible? Is this a bug of some sort?
For now I am going to workaround by putting in another file system task that deletes the files after they were copied and see how that goes, but would prefer just to do the "move" option.
Thanks,
Kayda

I'm having trouble working this out in SSIS. I am trying to use a File System task to rename a file using an expression so that file.zip will be renamed to filemmyy.zip at the end of every month (for instance this month would be file0506.zip).
I am using the destination expression variable. But I'm not sure what to put for DestinationConnection. It seems to want a file name, but the file name is going to be variable, so I'm not sure what to put.
Any ideas?

"variable used as the source or the destination is empty"

I have a File System Task that uses variables to resolve the destination and source paths of a document. When I select the 'copyfile' operation...the document is copied from the source to the destination without error.
However when I change the property from 'copyfile' to 'movefile' I get an error and the document is not moved.
The source and destination variables contain a valid file path name since the copy commmand is working as expected. However when I alter the properties of the File System task to move the document. I get the following error:
Could not find a part of the path 'G:CommonInformation SystemsDropFilesrtNRT_ConfirmationOrder Confirmation Report_11062006.xlsOrder Confirmation Report_11062006.xls
It seems a little nonsensical since the document file paths are valid when performing a copy. For some reason the error log is showing that that the file path is the document name "Order Confirmation Report_11062006.xls" and adding it twice to the the directory path called "'G:CommonInformation SystemsDropFilesrtNRT_Confirmation" as you can see in the above error message.
To replicate the 'move' action...I added an extra File System Task that deletes the document once the copy has been performed. I would like some insight into why this doesn't seem to work.
Thank you.

Hello all...
I created several SSIS packages on a 32-bit system, using odbc to to access the dbase source file. Finally, after setting up a proxy, etc., we got the package to run and import data. We then needed to move the packages to a 64-bit system. So, we built our manifests, and installed all of our packages. We are using several dtsConfig files for our packages, and in there we specify the DSN that we will be accessing. I understand that MS does not support odbc drivers in a 64-bit world (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=85703&SiteID=1). Has anyone been faced with this issue? How did you get past it? I accessed the 32-bit odbc drivers on the 64-bit system, and i setup a dsn that points to the dbase file, but when i run the job, the log file has an error that the dsn was not found. However, when I run the package itself, it runs as expected...
Please help!! :-)
