SQLDataSource No Bind On Page Load?
Aug 29, 2006
I use SQLDataSource, bind to a GridView and a SelectParameter that gets it's value from a textbox. If the textbox is empty, then it returns all rows.
How do I prevent the query and binding when the page first load? Thanks

Hi all,I would like to do something I thought was simple but I can't seem to figure it out. I would like to bind the Text properties to two labels to the columns in an SqlDataSource, much the same as you can bind a listbox to a SqlDataSource.Is this possible?The reason why I'm trying it this way is because I originally used an OleDB connection and datareader, but it doesn't seem to work on our service providers server (keeps saying that it can't find the database) even though it works on the four other server's I've tried. It definitely connects to the database when I use the SqlDataSource on a listbox control, but it fails when I use the same connection string with the OleDB connection.Is this the best way to go about it, or should I persist with finding the OleDB/datareader (the service provider has been no help at all). Thanks.

My code behind file builds a select statement and I would like to fill an SqlDataSource control with it. Can some show me an example of how I might do that? Maybe something like this?
Me.SqlDataSourceSearchResult.ConnectionString = "ConnectStr"
Me.SqlDataSourceSearchResult.SelectCommand = "SelectStatement"
gvSearchResult.DataSource = Me.SqlDataSourceSearchResult
gvSearchResult.DataBind()

I have a sql data source that runs a query that returns a users data (See below). I want to set the session variable "UserID" equal to the tkinit. How do I "bind" the session to a column from this select command? I tried this Session("UserID") = ("tkinit") but that doesn't work. I can hard code a session value, just can't figure out how to "bind" it from the sqldatasource..
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="getUserID" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:xxxConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT [tkinit], [tklast], [tkfirst], [tkfirst]+' '+[tklast] as fullname FROM [yyy] WHERE ([login] = @login)"><SelectParameters><asp:Parameter Name="login" Type="String" /></SelectParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>

Hi every experts
I have a exist Stored Procedure in SQL 2005 Server, the stored procedure contain few output parameter, I have no problem to get result from output parameter to display using label control by using SqlCommand in Visual Studio 2003. Now new in Visual Studio 2005, I can't use sqlcommand wizard anymore, therefore I try to use the new sqldatasource control. When I Configure Datasource in Sqldatasource wizard, I assign select field using exist stored procedure, the wizard control return all parameter in the list with auto assign the direction type(input/ouput....), after that, whatever I try, I click on Test Query Button at last part, I always get error message The Query did not return any data table.
My Question is How can I setup sqldatasource to access Stored Procedure which contain output parameter, and after that How can I assign the output parameter value to bind to the label control's Text field to show on web?
Thanks anyone, who can give me any advice.

hello all
1) I was using SQLdataSource and bind it with the gridviw to show its data. so that is how is running
when the page load, i see the data is posted on the page on the gridview.
But what i need to do when I want a user to click a button and then the Gridview show the data.
As i was creating a SQLDatasource, it was click click and click but I want to put that sqldatasouce to load the data in gridview by a click event.
2) my second question is also related to the first one or just similar.
I dont want to get all the data rather filter it.
so once the page load, there is a button and a text box.
In the text box user going to type the EmployeeID and click the "Employee Info" button and then the data would show up.
Rather i use te DetaildView Control . What should I do to load the information on the Text boxes rather then on the GridView since it is going to be a single recrod.
Thanks all

Hi all,
I have a webpage with a Datagrid that populates using a table adapter from a Stored procedure that exists in my SQL Database...If I run the Stored procedure in SQL Directly then it takes 20 Secs to return all records...If I run the webpage then it takes just over 20 Secs..
Great you say..But If I have the sorting option set in ASP.net and I click on a column to sort then off the page goes for another 20 secs to sort the data..
Is there a better way to do what I am doing here that will speed up the page load..
Ie..the data is returned once and then sorted...
Is it Better / Quicker for me to create a table using the stored procedure and link to this from the website..Updating the table every couple of minutes ?
Any advice please ?

Hi,
I have the following Sql Data Source that I wish to bring back on my page:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:FrogConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="ProposalsCheckNewCustomerData" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:FormParameter FormField="MaritalStatusID" Name="MartialStatusID" Type="Int32" />
<asp:FormParameter FormField="LivingStatusID" Name="LivingStatusID" Type="Int32" />
<asp:FormParameter FormField="DealerID" Name="DealerID" Type="Int32" />
<asp:FormParameter FormField="VehicleTypeID" Name="VehicleTypeID" Type="Int32" />
<asp:FormParameter FormField="FinanceTypeID" Name="FinanceTypeID" Type="Int32" />
<asp:FormParameter FormField="MediaSourceID" Name="MediaSourceID" Type="Int32" />
<asp:FormParameter FormField="DealerContactID" Name="DealerContactID" Type="Int32" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
The recordset brings back 7 values that I wish to populate into 7 Labels.
1. Should the SqlDataSource be on the page (between the Head tags) or within the Page_Load command of the Page Behind ?- If its on the page behind do any of you have any sample code to show me how to get the recordset up and running ?
2. How would I bind the results to a label ?- Within my old asp pages it was simple (I'm not saying its not simple here, I am still getting my head around vb.net)- eg <%=rsX("MaritalStatus")%> I guess its something very similar
Thanks for any pointersFizzystutter

Hi,
I placed several SqlDataSource objects on my page which work with the same database (same connection string).
As I know, connection operation to database is costly in the performance prespective.
Do these SqlDataSource controls work with the same connection object or each of them create his own connecton object?
If each create it's own, then can they be changed to work with one connection object?
Thanks

Thanks for your help.
I'm just getting into ASP.NET 2.0 and started using the SqlDataSource control to declaritively connect to a database. I was wondering if I have two SqlDataSource controls on one page with two select commands querying the same database, will the that create to seperate instances of opening and closing the connection to the database, or will it open the database once, execute both queries, and then close the connection. It seems that if it creates two separate connections, it would still be more efficient to to connect to the database programmatically using ADO.NET. You would only need to make one trip to the database, pull down all of your data, and then close the connection.

1. Create a new .aspx page and add this inside the form tag: <div> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox2" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Button" /> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Comments]" InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Comments(CommentAuthor, CommentText) VALUES (@auth, @text)"> <InsertParameters> <asp:FormParameter FormField="TextBox1" Name="auth" /> <asp:FormParameter FormField="TextBox2" Name="text" /> </InsertParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> </div>2. Add the event handler for the button in code behind: Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Me.SqlDataSource1.Insert() End Sub3. Run the page, enter some text into the textboxes and hit the button. GREAT! The data was successfully inserted into the database.Now, let's try the exact same thing, but this time lets create a Master Page first. So:1. Create a new master page.2. Create a new .aspx page, check the 'select master page' checkbox and then select the newly created master page.3. Add the exact same as above in between the asp:Content begin and end tags: <div> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox2" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Button" /> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Comments]" InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Comments(CommentAuthor, CommentText) VALUES (@auth, @text)"> <InsertParameters> <asp:FormParameter FormField="TextBox1" Name="auth" /> <asp:FormParameter FormField="TextBox2" Name="text" /> </InsertParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> </div>4. Add the event handler for the button in code behind. Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Me.SqlDataSource1.Insert() End Sub5. Run the page, enter some text into the textboxes and hit the button. WHOOT!? This time it doesn't work and the following error appears:Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'CommentAuthor', table 'C:DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGSSONYMY DOCUMENTSVISUAL STUDIO 2005WEBSITESCOMMENTSAPP_DATACOMMENTS_DB.MDF.dbo.Comments'; column does not allow nulls. I have a page that has a drop down control that is used to control the items in a FormView. The drop down is bound to one SQLDatasource while the FormView is bound to another SQLDataSource. I've got everything working great. Selecting an item in the drop down reveals the details in the form view. the Form can be opened for editing and deleting. I even have the Insert working. But there lies my problem. Once the Insert is executed I'd like to take the Index value of the recently submitted item and set it to the SelectedIndex of my dropdown. Here is the code for each of the SQL events Sub FormViewUpdated(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormViewUpdatedEventArgs) Handles FormView1.ItemUpdated
confirmation.Visible = True
confirmation.Text = "<img src=""../img/smiley36.gif""> Your record has been updated."
Dim index As Integer = Me.DropDownList1.SelectedIndex
DropDownList1.DataBind()
Me.DropDownList1.SelectedIndex = index
End Sub
Sub FormViewDeleted(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormViewDeletedEventArgs) Handles FormView1.ItemDeleted
confirmation.Visible = True
confirmation.Text = "<img src=""../img/smiley36.gif""> Your record has been deleted."
DropDownList1.DataBind()
FormView1.ChangeMode(FormViewMode.ReadOnly)
End Sub
Sub FormViewInserted(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormViewInsertedEventArgs) Handles FormView1.ItemInserted
confirmation.Visible = True
confirmation.Text = "<img src=""../img/smiley36.gif""> Your record has been inserted."
DropDownList1.DataBind()
End Sub
I would like to do something similar to the Updated event in the Inserted sub. Notice I have a Me.DropDownList.SelectedIndex bit...I'd like to be able to set a variable to the new ID and then set the Me.DropDownList.SelectedIndex to that variable. My stored proc for the Insert reads like
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.usp_INSERTHelp_Faq
(
@FAQQuestion varchar(500),
@FAQText ntext,
@FAQIndex varchar(500),
@ModifiedBy int,
@Help_FAQID int OUTPUT
)
AS
INSERT INTO Help_FAQ (FAQQuestion, FAQText, FAQIndex,ModifiedBy, Views)
VALUES (@FAQQuestion,@FAQText,@FAQIndex,@ModifiedBy,0)
SELECT @Help_FaqID = @@Identity
RETURN
So, the Stored Proc is set up to return the latest ID. Also, my SQLDataSource for the FormView has an InsertParameter: <asp:Parameter Direction="Output" Name="Help_FAQID" Type="Int32" />
Any thoughts on how to close the loop here? How do I get my hands on the new Help_FAQID?

Background€¦
We€™re receiving the data as flat files, when I open up the file in notepad the characters look like the error€™d examples (see below). Open the file up in a texteditor where you can apply code page 1252 it display the characters correctly, which is expected behaviour!
I use SSIS to load these files into my database, applying the correct code page€¦
€¦however the data gets loaded in the incorrect form. Plus the database is collation €˜SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS€™ which is code page 1252 so I can€™t see why I am getting these issues.
This is an example of the Umlaut (German chars) issues were getting, they€™re appearing in the database like this€¦.
tuid travelproductid lastname
1741869 6 P€?hls
1792950 6 Sch€žfer
2087798 6 L€?schhorn
2089010 6 Sagemller
2314086 6 Jnger
€¦& should be€¦
1741869 6 Pöhls
1792950 6 Schäfer
2087798 6 Löschhorn
2089010 6 Sagemüller
2314086 6 Jünger
I think it€™s a bug with SSIS, I know having a Unicode file would certainly solve this but I don't have that option.

If I have a sqldatasource on the page, is it run if it is not bound to a data object like a gridview?
Seems like if i want to access the data (like set a label text) from the sqldatasource I have to use code to first create a dataview then pick throught it. This seems like I'm running it twice. I'm new at .net so I dont know how to tell.
I don't want to write data select code programatically when I can just through an SDS on the page, but wondered it it ran just because it's on the page.

Hi, I have created a search page which needs to perform different
search function in same page. I have setuped a sqldatasource then
manual
setup the connection string and command inside the codefile. So the
select command can be various depends on the event. The problem is
all of those setting will be reset after I click on the pageindex in
the girdview control to go to next pages. Since this gridview is linked
with this sqldatasource control, I need to restore the connection
string/command when user choose decide to view next page of data inisde
the
gridview.
I think I must have done something wrong in here becuase it will end up
retrieving the total amount of data when everytime user choose to
view next
or perivous page.
Can someone give me a hand on this ? Thanks

Hi,
I'm still quite a beginner with the Report Designer and now I have faced a problem. My goal is to make a reports refresh each time it is loaded. I know that this can be done by using rs:clearsession = true-method but in order this to work, it should be added to each link. There are a lots of links in the reports we are using and therefore it would be more practical to find another way to refresh the report on page load. Is there any way to do this with some kind of code attached to each report? I'm using Visual Studio 2003 and my Reporting services 2000.

Hello, I'm new to the forum and new to SQL, ASP.NET, etc. I am creating an intranet site for my company in VS 2005 and have run into a very annoying problem that I can't seem to solve. I have tried Googling it and came up empty. I have a database in SQL Express 2005 and my website will be accessing several tables within the database. I can retrieve info just fine and I can update, delete, etc just fine using gridview or other prebuilt tools, but when I add a few text boxes and wire a button to the SqlDataSource.Insert() command, I get a new record that is full of null values except for the identity key I have set. The kicker is that I am also using a master page and when I duplicate the web page without the master page link, everything works just fine. The following snippets show what I'm doing:<InsertParameters><asp:FormParameter Name="Name" Type="String" FormField="txtName" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Location" Type="String" FormField="ddlLocation" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Issue" Type="String" FormField="txtProblem" /></InsertParameters>Of course I match the formfields to the text boxes, create an onclick event for my button, the sqldatasource is configured correctly, it just doesn't work with the master page no matter what I do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Since SQL Express only runs on one CPU, is there a way to bind SQL Express to a particular CPU, or SQL Express only runs on CPU0?

I tried to install SQL Server 2K on a W2K server running IIS and SSL. The SQL installation failed until I deleted the certs from my system. Now, the SQL logs say "SuperSocket Info: Bind failed on TCP port 1433". I have tried everything on the MS KB, TechNet, and MSDN sites that I could find. I have also uninstalled IIS and Certificate Services from the server. Since there are no certs left, I suspect that SQL Server is getting in it's own way on startup. Does anyone know of a way to trap/log this kind of conflict?
