SQLNCLI - Login Timeout Error

Jul 10, 2007

Hi,

I just migrated a SQL7 instance into SQL2005. Use the backup and restore method. The following was the steps done :

1) Database Backup from sql7 and restore on sql2005

2) Create user on sql2005

3) Configure SQL Native client for instance

- When apps tried to access the server, they encounter the following error

Could not find server ServernameSQL7 in sys.servers. Verify that the correct server name was specified. If necessary, execute the stored procedure sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sys.servers. - /elogs/lib/db.asp, line 70

4) As requested, i ran sp_addlinkedserver Servername. After which the apps got back with this error

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Servername" returned message "Login timeout error" - /elogs/lib/db.asp, line 70

I am unsure of how to proceed from here. Please assist.

Thanks and Regards,

Siva

Member Login - Timeout Expired Error

May 15, 2006

Hi,

I get this timeout error from the member login page. It does not happen
always. Sometimes when I enter the email and password and try to login,
it will take forever and then it throws a timeout error. "Timeout
expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the
operation or the server is not responding."

I went into our server, started the sql profiler and tried to run the
login sproc manually from the query analyzer. It took 46 secs to finish
running the query. I checked the profiler, there was nothing much going
on, I don't think there is any resource bottleneck.

I went back to the website and I tried to login, it worked fine. I
checked the query analyzer again, this time it took 0 secs (or fraction
of a sec?) to execute the sproc.

It looks like it takes a long time to run the sproc the "first" time,
from then on it only takes less than a sec to execute the sproc. How do
I solve this problem?

The users table has only 50,000 users. The sproc is only a couple of lines. The user table is indexed on userid and email.

------------------------------
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[proc_userverifylogin]
@email varchar(100), @pass varchar(50)
AS

IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM users WHERE email = @email AND pass = @pass)
BEGIN
UPDATE users SET lastlogin = GETDATE() WHERE email = @email
SELECT userid, fname, state FROM users WHERE email = @email
END
------------------------------

Thanks.

SQLNCLI Linked Server Error

Oct 30, 2007

I've been assigned with finding the issue behind this error on one of our production systems:

TCP Provider: The semaphore timeout period has expired. [SQLSTATE 07008] (Error 121) OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SERVER1" returned message "Communication link failure". [SQLSTATE 01000] (Error 7412). The step failed.

I've Googled the error to death, searched the forums here and at other SQL sites as well and have found nothing that points me at the cause. I've found the individual parts of the error but not the whole. Maybe I've just been looking at it too long and am missing something simple. Anyone have any ideas?

These are two linked SQL2005 64bit enterprise Win2k3 servers. The error comes when an automated daily job is run. Sometimes it happens at once, sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes after an hour. I can see nothing wrong with the server itself or the network.

Thanks in advance.

May 15, 2008

Hello, I've a problem with a software developed in C# with the framework 2.0. This is the error I receive : The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "XXX_LINKED_SERVER" was unable to begin a distributed transaction. SQLNCLI Error After Column Resize On Linked Server

Apr 8, 2008

I am linking to another SQL Server database to extract data into my own system. Following an increase in size on one of the columns in a table I am extracting, I am getting the following error:

'OLE DB provider 'SQLNCLI' for linked server 'gsc-rpt.svr.bankone.net' returned data that does not match expected data length for column '[gsc-rpt.svr.bankone.net].[Peregrine].[dbo].[scProblem].short_description'. The (maximum) expected data length is 100, while the returned data length is 148'

The column short_description has been increased from 100 to 1024. Writing a simple query, SELECT (max(len(short_description)) FROM dbo.Peregrine_Problem will generate the error, but if I embed the same SQL into an Excel VBA macro and connect to the server, it happily returns the result 1024. Our Access databases also link to the table on the remote server and handle the increased column size properly.

I have done everything I can think of, including deleting the linked server within SQL Server MS, and recreating it, but I can't override the setting of 100.

Any ideas?

Error : Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed...

Nov 10, 2006

Hi,I
get this error from our web application every once in a while. " Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding". I email
myself when an error occurs, and once every 2-3 days I get this timeout
error emails, like 5-10 emails in a span of few minutes. Then it goes
away. I have set the command timeout for 60 secs.
It
doesn't happen from the same stored procedure, actually I have seen it
timeout from really simple 1 or 2 line stored procedures, which shouldn't normally take 1 sec. Its like
sql server just shuts down for few minutes. We have some
backups and maintenance jobs scheduled, but they run only after
midnight. I have checked the
application event viewer, there are no warnings or
error messages for MSSQLSERVER. Can
any one tell me how to check whats going on during that short timespan
when timeout error occurs, and what causes it? I don't want to run sql
profiler continuously for 2-3 days, I am afraid it will slow down the
server more. Thanks.

Cannot Create An Instance Of OLE DB Provider SQLNCLI For Linked Server SERVERNAME, Error: 7302

Mar 2, 2008

I just installed a SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 instance on a server with an existing SQL Server 2000 SP3 installation. (I need SQL Server 2005's INSERT from an EXEC capability). It's working great now except for one thing: I can't link any other SQL servers! I've already successfully added and queried a linked Oracle server, but attempting to add a linked SQL server gives me the following error, no matter which SQL provider I try to use:

Code Snippet
"The linked server has been created but failed a connection test. Do you want to keep the linked server?"
Additional information:
--> An exception occured while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)
--> Cannot create an instance of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SERVERNAME". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7302)

The technical details reveal the error source as "sp_testlinkedserver".

I've scoured the net and premier support for advice on this problem, but the little I found wasn't helpful. I've tried reinstalling the SQL Native Client, but it didn't help. I've tried uninstalling SQL Server 2005 Express completely (including management studio and native client), rebooting, and reinstalling everything, with no luck. The server (obviously) does not have a firewall enabled. I've tried stopping the SQL 2000 Server installed on the system, no help. If I create a test .UDL file on the system, pointing to any of the SQL servers I'm trying to link, clicking the "Test Connection" button returns successful. I'm also able to connect to and query the servers directly from the SQL 2005 Express Management Studio. I just can't add them as linked servers.

The server is running Windows 2003 SP1, SQL Server 2000 SP3, and SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 (the default "SQLExpress" named instance). I've tried setting up SQL 2005 Express to run under the network service account and under a domain account used by the other SQL 2000 servers.

From other SQL 2000 servers, I can connect and link to the SQL Server 2005 Express instance successfully. I can also successfully add linked SQL servers in SQL Server 2000 instance installed on the same server. Only adding linked SQL servers in 2005 Express seems to be broken.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm totally baffled. Thank you so much for any helpful advice.

Login Timeout Expiration

Oct 30, 2007

We are getting the following error message sporadically:

Network error code 0x2746 occurred while establishing a connection; the connection has been closed. This may have been caused by client or server login timeout expiration. Time spent during login: total 6108 ms, enqueued 1 ms, network writes 1 ms, network reads 6108 ms, establishing SSL 6107 ms, negotiating SSPI 0 ms, validating login 0 ms. [CLIENT: #.#.#.#]

We are seeing this message because we enabled some DBCC trace flags to try and figure out why our clients are having their connections terminated to the SQL 2005 (x64) server we have in production. It appears that the establishment of SSL is taking a very long time according to the log entry. What is using SSL? I'm assuming it is trying to communicate with one of my domain controllers and I'd like to know what perfmon counters i should watch to see what's going on. Is it making an LDAPS connection or kerberos? Or native ntlm?

We've already updated the NIC drivers/firmware and disabled the TcpChimney setting mentioned in the KB articles, but nothing so far has had an effect. I'm now trying to figure out if my DC is overloaded but don't know what counters to look at.

Thanks
Steve

What's The Idle Timeout Of SQL Login Connection?

Jun 8, 2005

Hi.. I have application which is connected to my SQL 2000 database. Normally our users use Terminal service to the SQL 2000 and application (same box) remotely and connect to the database. But some time the connection break and I have idle login stuck there.

For example, if I use sp_who, I can see many logins still login to DB even they are out. And sometimes I see duplicate logins too even there is only one person using that login to logon to DB. Is there a way to find out what is the idle timeout of the user login session??

Is that under SQL server properties -->remote server connections-->Query time-out--> >> sec ?

Is there a way to limit only 1 session can be allow for each login ??

Db Free Space And Login Timeout -strange

Feb 13, 2006

I saw something strange this morning that I can not work out in my head.

Customer contacted us saying that the login timeout for one of our web apps was timing out.

The login does a simple check of user name and password against a table and inserts the event into a tracking table. I traced the login routine and the query took zero seconds in the QA on the db server. Everything looked fine in the Task Manager and the Performance monitor except that the disk que spiked out when the login page was used. I pinged between the web and database server and that was fine. The disk had plenty of free space for the log and the mdf files. The db had about of 15mb of unallocated space. Nothing seemed to work until I allocated another 100 MB to the db on their test site. Suddenly no more time out. I tested the live site again and it was still happening (same db and web server). Bumped up the db size on the live site and boom no more problem.

The problem is "fixed" for the moment but I can not seem to reason why so I can actually fix the problem in the long run. I do not know why a simple little password routine would care about the difference between 15mb of unallocated space and 115 mb of unallocated space.

Login Timeout Expired Prevents Package Deployment

Aug 22, 2006

I'm trying to deploy an SSIS package to a server ("SQL Server" deployment). The package does have an encrypted password, which has both worked nicely and not in the past. It's entirely possible that our other "DBA" has busted something on the server, thus preventing my access to it, but I'm curious if anyone has any experience w/ error code 0x80004005 (Login timeout expired) in the SaveToSqlServer method.
Is that just the generic you-can't-log-in message, or is it really trying to imply that the SQL Server is not responding to login attempts?Thanks for any help, Ben

[298] SQLServer Error: 258, TCP Provider: Timeout Error [258]. [SQLSTATE 08001]

Mar 11, 2008

I've received this error twice over 2 days in the SQL Agent error log during off-hours from a server which has not had any changes to it in the last few months (once at 3:32AM and the next day at 3:46AM. I've been able to tie it to log-shipping backup jobs (all of which run under the SQL Service domain account) which run every minute. I can't find any documentation on these errors on the web or MSDN site. Can I chalk this up to possibly "winking" connection to our domain controller? We've never had these messages before, and our LAN department swears that there have been no upgrades to the network or domain controller servers recently.

Timeout Expired Error - SQL Server 2005 Error After Exactly 1 Hour

Aug 27, 2007

We have several large government web sites that we help look after. We recently migrated one of them from SQL Server 2000 to 2005 and are having a problem with our nightly email job in that if it runs for more than an hour then after exactly 1 hour the email job gets a "Timeout expired" message back from SQL Server.

Our batch jobs do run on a different server and connect remotely to our SQL Server DB. I did change the connections - remote query timeout and increased it 10 fold, but this didn't make any difference. Is there any other parameter that may be causing the Timeout expired error after exactly 1 hour?

Thanks !

on investigating i found tht suppose one user is updating the database which is taking some time and at the same time if another user tries to retrieve some data from the database he gets a timeout error after some time...........

However if the updateor insert action get over very quickly then the other user is able to retrieve the data ........

Is it bcoz tht the update statements r locking the datatables during the opperation and so the other user has to wait.. if tht is the case then wat is solution tht the other can retrieve the data without much waiting while one user is updating ........

Timeout Error

Jul 30, 2007

Hi,
We were in the process of migrating our application from sql 2000 to sql 2005.
It is noticed that a particular method is giving us Timeout Expired error in SQL 2005 €“ Sp2, windows 2003 server sp1.
It was working perfectly in SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 (without any Service Packs)
After we installed the Service pack 2, the method call from Sqlhelper class

€œSqlCommandBuilder.DeriveParameters() €œ is giving the time out error.

We tried a round work by installing SP1 first and then installing a support patch from the following url
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917824 but still the method is giving the same error.

any kind of help will be greatfull.

Regards
Mat

Error: Timeout Expired

Sep 2, 2006

I have an Update stored procedure that is used to update four tables at the same time. The issue is that it works perfect when i run the application in local  server,but when i upload the application on to the server that is located in U.S, it gives an error "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed
prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. " I think the sqlCommand is timing out and the value is not returned. Is there a workaround to this issue? What could be the reason for this? Any ideas.. Please help..

Getting A Pool Timeout Error

Sep 8, 2007

I have pages which are using a master page.
An example page on my site would be the homepage, it makes 3 connections to mssql.
1) Get the keywords of the page
2) Get a list of news articles
3) Get the content of the page.
 When I visual web express to debug the site it's giving me a pool error message, neither can I get the site to load directly via IIS. It says theres been a pool timeout.
I've read on the internet about making sure connections are closed when you are finished and I've checked that all database connections are closed using
finally{conn.Close();}
 does anyone have any idea why I would be having this problem?
How can I see what connections the site is opening, or maybe theres a limit on my server?
I'm using my own test server running windows 2003 and IIS

Timeout Expired Error

Feb 15, 2008

Hi:
Just purchased a web application, sometime it will cause the timeout error, that will cause the web page can't be opened, and popup an error page."Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."
The function is below:public static ProfileAnswer[] FetchNonApproved()
{
using (SqlConnection conn = Config.DB.Open())
{
SqlDataReader reader = SqlHelper.ExecuteReader(conn,"FetchNonApprovedAnswers"); //this is the line where the timeout error occurs.

List lAnswers = new List();

while (reader.Read())
{
//do something here
lAnswers.Add(answer);
}

return lAnswers.ToArray();
}
}

 Is there anyway to jump out of the error if the timeout occurs, abort the further action, and back to current page.  (what is the problem with the code?)
Thanks a lot.
Jt

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached.
