SQLServer Redirector Port 1434

I'm doing some vulnerability assessments of MS SQLServer installations
using AppDetective.
On doing the "discovery" proble (to find the instances), I find that I
get two "hits" -- port 1433 shows the MS SQALServer instance, but port
1434 comes up with MS SQL Server Redirector.
The online books seems to be a bit light on waht the use of this port
is for.
I thought that port 1433 was the port on which SQLServer listens for
ODBC connections.
However, port 1434 seems to be used for the same purpose.
Any additional information of a non-technical level (my manager needs
to know this and he's not a DBA) is greatly appreciated.

Hi. I'm a SQL Server novice, so apologies if any of this sounds simple.I am running Windows XP SP2, and have just installed SQLServer 2000. Ineed another application to connect to SQLServer, and am specifying itto do so via localhost:1433, but keep getting an error whenever I trydoing so saying it cannot connect to the database. A colleague of minehas the exact same set up on his machine, and he can connect to SQLServer fine. Running 'netstat -a' at the command line on his machinereveals that the system is listening to port 1433/ms-sql-s. Runningnetstat on my machine shows that the system is not listening to1433/ms-sql-ms. I have checked in Network Config in SQLServerEnterprise Manager, and TCP/IP is set to be using 1433.To confirm this, my application can connect over the network to mycolleague's SQL Server. but he cannot connect over the network to mine.So I'm pretty sure the issue is related to this 1433/ms-sql-s problem.Does anyone know how to resolve this? I use SQL Server 2012 Management Studio, SQL Server Data Tools and Visual Studio 2012 to deploy a data mining project.
I get the following error message: A connection can not be made. Make sure the server is running.
I am able to pick up the database using the details below:
Machine Name: NIRMALK01-PC
SQL Server: SQLEXPRESS
SQL EXPRESS: Running
SQL BROWSER: Running
SQL Agent: DISABLED
I can not find Analysis Services in services.msc
This is the error: Error 1
The project could not be deployed to the 'nirmalk01-pcsqlexpress' server because of the following connectivity problems : A connection cannot be made to redirector. Ensure that 'SQL Browser' service is running. To verify or update the name of the target server, right-click on the project in Solution Explorer, select Project Properties, click on the Deployment tab, and then enter the name of the server.

Security question regarding opening of port 1433, 1434 (or whatever SQL 2000/2005 port one assigns to SQL services to listen on).
I'm running in what appears to be paranoid sys admins when it comes to opening up port 1433, 1434 for MS SQL servers. When I ask why, they say it's a big security risk and then reference a SQL worm/security bug in SQL 2000 that happened about 2-3 years ago which has since been patched in SP3 onwards. So I say ok, so it's been patched so why can't the port be open now? Cause it happened once and only compromised very few SQL servers and as of todate, no one can positively suggest that the bug even exposed any useful/sensitive data?
But what I can't really understand, is that sys admins will be ok with opening port 80 for web servers and port 443 for SSL -- these are listening services also, that to my knowledge have the same level of security exposure as port 1433/34. Is it because these services haven't successfully (yet) been crashed to a point of user account exposure? Is that the only reason for the port 1433/34 paranoia?
I realize port 1433/34 are under 24/7 login attempts from drones (have monitored this activity) but other than resources use/traffic, these attempts are pretty useless with appropriate user/password accounts setup on the SQL server.
Can someone clarify this with me?

We have a static class that makes an HTTPWebRequest to get XML data from one of our vendors. We use this as input to a stored proc in SQLServer2005. When I compile this class and call it from a console application in visual studio it executes in milliseconds, everytime. When I compile it, create the assembly and clr function and execute it in SQLServer, it takes around 14 seconds to execute the first time, then on subsequent requests it is again really fast, until I wait for 10 seconds and re-execute, once again it is slow the first time and then fast on subsequent requests. We do not see this behavior when executing outside SQLServer. Makes me think that some sort of authentication is perhaps taking place the first time the function is run in SQLServer? I have no idea how to debug this further. Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))
Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„¢')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„¢ = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„¢"
„¢ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„¢')
and select again voila i see
"Œ€„¢"
Does anyone have an idea?

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.
I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?
The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I have an app that uses a sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to connect to a sqlserver 2000.
Is it possible to do a direct replacement of sqlserver 2000 with sqlserver 2005 express just by reconfiguring the app to point to the express? The app would still be using the sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to try and make the connection.
If that is a possibility, what can be some differences in the configuration? Previously with 2000 the config information I entered is:
server name: "machinename"( or ip). I've also tried "machiname/SQLEXPRESS"
DB name: name of db instance
port: 1433(default)
user and pass.
My attempts so far results in
"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Error establishing socket."
and

Hello people.
I am in the process of planning a server upgrade to sql2005 x64.
I created 2 linked servers: one to a SQL2000 sp4 server and one to a SQL7.0 SP3.
I have the following error when I query the linked servers.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "The stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.
I am aware of KB 906954.

I applied the instcat.sql on the SQL2000SP4 server and my linked server issues for that one are gone.
However, I ran the instcat.sql script on the SQL7.0 sp3 server and the linked server is still giving me an issue.

I need to Import Data TblShift from Access to SQLServer €“ using DTS I€™ve done this successfully!
Now I want to use parameter so I only importing record within range (e.g. ShiftDate BETWEEN 05-24-2006 AND 06-23-2006)
In SQLServer, I have created table to store the date range as following:

DateTo: 05/23/2006
How do I use the date range from TblParameter(SQLServer) to import record from TblShift(Access) using DTS?
Is this possible or any better solution for this?

I have set up a new web server in my DMZ. This web server needs to "talk" to an application server located on my LAN. It communicates via a COM + Component.
I would like to keep the access that is open between the DMZ & LAN to minimal, obviously for security reasons. Does anyone know what port is used for COM + communication?

Hi,
I am new to SQL Server 2005. I tried connecting to my local machine by using my machine name as Server name and then tried running the following query:
SELECT * FROM SYS.Objects. It gives me following error:
Invalid object name 'sys.objects'.
Whereas, if I connect to my local machine using mahcinenameSQLEXPRESS, then the above mentioned query runs fine.
Why is this difference? What is the difference when I login in these 2 different ways.

Ok,
The Scenario is as follows:
24/7 Production Call Centre server running NT4.0 and SQL 6.5 with all the latest service packs.
SQL mail fails(with dull regularity) and the SQL server services stop.
When the SQL server Services are restarted an error message appears stating that Port 1433 is in use after which nobody can connect via TCP/IP. Obviously the port believes the previous SQL session is still running, and won't release the port to the "New Application requesting it".
On a unix system you can force a port reset so you don't need to shutdown and restart the box. Can you do this from either SQL or NT?
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated the DBA's are 100 Miles from the Servers, so restarts are reliant on other people!

Is there any way that I can avoid using 1433,1434 port on the clustered servers?
I have a active/passive (SQL1-active,SQL2-passive) cluster server and another active/passive cluster (SQL2-passive,SQL1-active).
(Its a Quassi active/active server)
I want to change all the sql server ports to other than 1433 and 1434.
Should I change in the registry

or

Does anyone have an idea on why when using IP with port 1433 that on the SQL 2000 Server a bind failure happens on port 1433 and are not able to get to the SQL using IP but you can use Named Pipes.

I've been diagnosing deadlocks for a last couple weeks at a client site and I understand the KEY: and TAB: locks issues. However, the client recently experienced a series of multi-branch deadlocks for which I can find no information. Attached is the deadlock text from the ERRORLOG. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did a search on port 1433 but nothing came up in the search.
This question is more geared to DBAs more then SQL developers.
I have a SQL 2000 server on a win2k3 machine. For some reason it will not listen in on TCP port 1433.
Shared memory and Named Pipes do though.
I checked the Server Network Utility and I see TCP/IP listed right under Named Pipes and I see that the default port is 1433.
Any ideas how to get SQL to listen on that port?

1) Loging to server A.
2)Opened SQL Server Configuration Manager.
3)Opened SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration.
4)Opened TCPIP properties of Protocol for B.
5)On that opened IP Address TAB
6)Got PORT number from TCP Dynamic Ports
Am i going n right way.
If not please advice me the right way to get port numbers.

I'm trying to setup SQL Server 2005 Express to communicate through a non standard port. I can connect to SQLServer on a remote machine using port 1433 when it is set as such but when I change the server to another port and try and connect using SSMSE I can't get through. I'm specifying the ip address and a colon followed by port number to connect.
For example: 123.123.123.123:1234
Any ideas?

Not sure how this particular topic should be labeled but I figured I would start here.
I have a third party Time and Attendance program that uses SQL 2000 and IIS on top of Win2003.
It also uses a client side program that sits on an XP box that pulls Time clocks entries than passes that info to the SQL server.
We recently needed to move to a different service, still utilizing the same Time and Attendance program but a different client utility that pulls the Time clocks. Both the client and Time and Attnedants program are developed by the same company.
All that being said the new clock utility cannot connect to the SQL service.
The difference between the 2 utilities is the first utility uses UDP, the second uses TCP and requires port 5405.
Basically the way I€™m seeing things is that the server does not have port 5405 open this also confirmed by the company the wrote the program.
There is no firewall on this server. RRAS is installed but does not have any filters enables which I believe means it will receive and pass all protocols to all ports.
Using a port scan utility it shows port 5405 not to be open
How can I get port 5405 open?

Just wanted to find out what port does SSIS utilizes when communicated with a remote SQL Server. Is it 1434, 1433 or something? I have a SSIS Package on Server 1, which which does inserts on SQL DB on Server 2. I think between Server 1 and Server 2, some ports are being blocked because the 2 servers are separated by a firewall. When SSIS makes connection to Server 2 (SQL), what ports does it use? Also, any other tips would also help. Here is the error I am getting:
Cannot connect to 10.xx.xx.xx.

I installed a new instance and changed the default tcp/ip port and configured the applications. based on request i have changed the port to default 1433. now the problem is, the instance is not coming up. Then I restored the port now its working fine. But the application user wants 1433. could you please tell me why the instances is not comming up if the port is 1433? Thanks in advance

The powers that be at my company have decided to redisign our network. The big change is that they are completely separating the two domains, whereas I guess right now one runs inside of the other.
What this means to me is that I need to get a document together which shows all the connections between different SQL servers, web pages and services that I've created over the last year.
My question is, what ports do all of these things use to communicate with SQL Server 2000? I believe the only connections right now are using ADO/ADO.NET, or straight SQL Linked Servers.
