SQLSourceSafe, The Integrated Version Control Solution For SQL Server Objects!
Jul 20, 2005
SQLSourceSafe 2.0 is the right version control solution for SQL Server
database development projects. SQLSourceSafe 2.0 Integrates with both
SQL Server and Visual SourceSafe, providing an effective and
effortless version control management system for individuals and
project teams to manage database objects.
By using SQLSourceSafe 2.0, you can manage SQL Server database objects
such as tables, stored procedures, user defined functions, views,
triggers, indexes/keys and constraints as you manage regular files and
projects in SourceSafe. SQLSourceSafe 2.0 enables your to archive and
label database object changes in SourceSafe, so that you can compare
different versions, recover from an undesired write-over of objects,
or roll back to a previous release. Advanced users can also use
SQLSourceSafe 2.0 to find out the differences between SQL Server
databases or deploy the latest or any labeled version SQL Server
database archived in SourceSafe to different computers.

Whilst working with SSRS within SSIS I came accross an issue when trying to create a Web Service Task using the SSRS Web Service. After pointing the task to the WSDL file when I tried to access the Methods of the web service I would get the '....WSDL is not supported.' error. I also noticed that selecting the Download WSDL button would throw up and error as well.
After a bit bit of playing around I found the following solution to the problem.
Make a copy of the ReportingServices.wsdl file and make sure it is not marked as Read-Only.
Point the Web Service Task editor to this new copy of the WSDL file
Set the OverwriteWSDLFile option in the Web Service Task editor to True.
You should then be able to access the details of the WSDL file and the methods of the web service. I am not sure if this issue is by design but hope that this information will help others who came across the same issue?

We are looking for utilities to help us manage DTS packages. Specifically to help us track changes in the packages in a fairly fine-grained fashion; several layers deeper than the version listing under package info, for example. Think of it as an object-oriented diff utility if you will, something that can report on changes in a package very specifically; for example, we need to know that step 4 of a package is a SQL widget and the text has changed between versions, and what the changes are. Converting the package to a VB project & versioning the source text doesn't work, for several reasons too complicated to state here.
Is there aything like this available? We would rather buy than build, but I haven't seen anything like this yet. If anyone has experience with such a utility I would appreciate knowing about this. Thanks.

We are creating an SSIS application for population of the datawarehouse. And we arrived at a stage that business side is starting do some real testing. And of course we am getting some feedback and amendment to the specifications. Which is analysed by the PM's and translated to me.
When an change or amendment is coming to me. The package is checked out of the SVN repository and locked. And the developer makes the changes in a development enviroment and change the related SSIS packages. After the development we make a test run a separated the test enviroment. This test is checked by the Business side and the PM's when approved I copy the modified package to a live enviroment.
When the modified package is put in the live environment we manually check in package to the SVN repository.
The problem is that the changes are slow to implement and the SSIS package is locked for a single problem. And this can be very time consuming.
How are you guys handling development of SSIS packages? Especially where you work in teams or at least with more than one developer?
Is there a application/plugin or tool available which show the changes between two of the sames packages ( different versions ). A warning signal or something like that on the component would be very helpful.
I would be very interested in some more documentation about team development of ssis packages.

We have just upgraded from an embedded browser hosted RS2000 system to the Microsoft.ReportViewer.Winforms control for RS2005 in our applications, and have encountered a SOAP / firewall problem again.
We were using an embedded browser to display the reports, as some of our client sites block or strip the SOAP wrapper from SOAP 1.1 commands that the old RS2000 control tried to use when the data passes through their firewall. We have no control over, or visability of their firewall configuration, as this is part of their own site security.
Is RS2005 still using the same older version of SOAP, or has it been moved up to version 1.2, which I believe does not trigger as many alarm bells in some firewall systems.
We have no problems makeing web service calls to our own applications through the firewall, so its only the report viewer control that gives us these problems.
I have not been able to explicitly clarify this down to the SOAP version, but it looks too close the our previous firewall problem to be anything else - comments invited !!!!!
As an aside, is there any way to trace the inbound request through IIS to ReportServer so I can see what hits the report server ? The IIS logs alone show a request has been made, but no qualifying data, and the report server logs only seem to show processing once the request has been accepted. What I want to to is see the inbound request, and then the outbound error message being returned so I can confirm my suspicions.
I have posted a similar thread on google groups for reporting services.

I recently upgraded to on 2012 SP1 CU5 and have found the SSDT gui for SSIS to be almost unusable. I can't drag or resize items. Any time i try they either automagically shrink to the tiniest possible size, shoot off to some extreme or just shake uncontrollably I didn't have these problems on previous versions (dont remember what It was).
Is there a fix for this?

VB.NET 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express - NOT saving updates to DB - SOLUTION!
-----------------------------------
The following article is bogus and confusing:
How to: Manage Local Data Files - Setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms246989.aspx
You must manually copy the database file to the output directory
AFTER setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'.
Do not copy
The file is never copied or overwritten by the project system. Because your application creates a dynamic connection string that points to the database file in the output directory, this setting only works for local database files when you manually copy the file yourself.
You must manually copy the database file to the output directory
AFTER setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'.
-----------------------------------
The above article is bogus and confusing.
This is rediculous!
This is the most vague and convoluted bunch of nonsince I've ever come accross!
Getting caught out on this issue for the 10th time!
And not being able to find an exact step-by-step solution.
--------------------------
I've tried it and it doesn't work for me.
Please don't try what the article eludes to as I'm still sorting out exactly what is supposed to be happening.
If you have a step-by-step procedure that can be reproduced this properly please PM me.
I would like to test its validity then update this exact post as a solution rather than just another dicussion thread.
Many thanks.
This is the exact procedure I have come up with:
NOTE 1: DO NOT allow VB.net to copy the database into its folders/directorys.
NOTE 2: DO NOT hand copy the database to a folder/directory in your project.
Yes, I know its hard not to do it because you want your project nice and tidy.
I just simply could NOT get it to work.
You should NOT have myData.mdf listed in the Solution Explorer. Ever.
Create a folder for your data following NOTE 2.
Copy your data to that folder. * mine was C:mydatamyData.mdf
Create a NEW project.
Remove any Data Connections. ( no matter what)
Save it.
Data | View Data Sources
Add New Data Source
select NEW CONNECTION ( No Matter what, do it!
Select the database. * again mine was C:mydatamyData.mdf
Answer NO to the question:
Would you like to copy the file to your project and modify the connection?
- NO ( no matter what - ANSWER NO ! - Absolutely NO )
Then select the tables you want in the DataSet.
and Finish.
To Test ----------
From the Solution Explorer | click the table name drop down arrow | select details
Now Drag the table name onto the form.
The form is then populated with a Navigation control
and matching Labels with corresponding Textboxes for each field in the table.
Save it.
1) Run the app.
Add one database record to the database by pressing the Add(+) icon
Just add some quick junk data that you don't mind getting lost if it doesn't save.
YOU MUST CLICK THE SAVE ICON to save the data you just entered.
Now exit the application.
2) Run the app again.
And verify there is one record already there.
Now add a second database record to the database by pressing the Add (+) icon.
NOW add some quick junk data that you WILL intentionally loose.
*** DO NOT *** press the save icon.
Just Exit the app.
3) Again, Run the app.
Verify that the first record is still there.
Verify that the Second record is NOT there.
Its NOT there because you didn't save the data before exiting the app.
Proving that YOU MUST CLICK THE SAVE ICON to save the data you just entered.
Also proving you must add your own code to catch the changes
and ask the user to save the data before exitiing or moving to another record.
As a side note, since vb.net uses detached datasets,
(a copy/snapshot of the dataset in memory and NOT directly linked to the database)
the dataset will reflect all changes made when moving around the detached datasets.
YOU MUT REMEMBER TO SUBMIT YOUR CHANGES TO THE DATABASE TO SAVE THEM.
Otherwise, they will simply be discarded without notice.
Whewh!
I hope this saves me some time the next time I want to start a new database project.
Oh, and uh, for anyone else reading this post.
Thanks,

passing serialised objects to a stored procedure for the purpose of data inserts. I see this as being a way to handle multiple row inserts efficiently.
However, in my limited use of XML data I am not so sure how to link the data when I have a dependency on another "object" within the serialised XML.
Below is a code snippet showing what I have so far.
The first insert statement works fine - but how to retrieve the identifier created by the DB - I want to use an SQL statement that finds the record in the table based on the XML representation (of the PluginInfo), allowing me to insert the ConfigurationInfo with the correct reference to the PluginInfo
DECLARE @Config NVARCHAR(MAX)
DECLARE @Handle AS INT
DECLARE @TransactionCount AS INT
SELECT @Config = '
<ConfigurationDirectory >
<ConfigurationInfo groupKey="Notifications" sectionKey="App.Customization.PluginInfo"

Hi all,
Since some analysis services features are only available in Enterprise version , I have to upgrade my SQL 2005 server from standard edition to enterpise edition.
So I uninstall originial standard version of analysis service and install a Enterprise version. However, the analysis service is still a standard version after installation.
Is it possible to keep data engine as standard version and install a enterprise version of analysis service?
Thank you very much

Hello,I have been searching and reading a lots of information on the microsoft website about the different version of SQL server, but still can not make my decision. In term of performance, is there a real big difference between the workgroup and the standard version? The workgroup is limited to 3 GB of RAM while the standard is unlimited, would that really change the performance if my server has 16Gb or RAM?The price difference is pretty substantial so if could only have to buy the workgroup , it would be better. One more question, regarding the type of licence, my server has 2 processors, could I avoid buying 2 licences and get the Server plus CAL instead. I am using this server to host 4 web-application running on SQL server. Each database is about 15 MB.Thanks in adavance for your advises.Arno

I am wondering if it is possible to change from SQL Server Enterprise Evaluation Version to Developer Version. The reason is because the Enterprise Evaluation version expires after 180 days. So if I create reports and cubes in Enterprise Evaluation I can import them into Developer Edition right? Should I remove the Enterprise Evaluation version after 180 days or leave it then install Developer Edition?

Can some one here give me more insight about how to upgrade a SQL Server 2005 Standard Version (32 bits) to a SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Version (32 bits) as default instance on a Windows 2003 enterprise OS (32 bits). I want to know what is the easist way and what is the safest way. May I preserve some settings I have for the STD version, or I have to start from strach again to configure the server? Is there any catches, anything I should have attention to (We are using heavily about CLR and fulltext indexing)?
Thanks a milliom

I downloaded the 101 Samples installation (i.e. 101SamplesCS.msi) from Microsoft's website, which contains SQL Server database files.
While working with the databases in the "Data Access" samples from the 101 Samples projects, I get the following error:
"Database <mdf_name> cannot be upgraded because its non-release version (600) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database..."
I assume the database files were created with a beta or CTP version of SQL Server 2005. Does anyone know where I can get an updated version of these database files or scripts to update them?
Please help.

I've had VS2005 installed for quite some time but I just purchansed SQL Server 2005 Developer and installed it. How do I accomplish integeration with SQL Server 2005 to VS2005? I had C# express at one point and SQL Express with the full tool install. That provided me with a designer for SQL Server (which was simply VS2005) and a seperate development environment under C# express. How do I integerate them so all the functionality resides within VS2005?
Any help you can provide will be much appreciated.

In my architecture I have a Domain Controller with Active Directory (DOMAIN_A), IIS 6.0 (WEBSERVER) and SqlServer 2000
(SQLDBSERVER).
The WEBSERVER has a
.NET application with windows authentication. The .NET application interacts with the
database server. I want to use Integrated Security to pass in
the users login credentials to the database to run any database calls so that I can
audit who is making what calls on the database.
The connection string
I am using for this is as follows:
string connStr =
"Server=SQLDBSERVER;Database=xxx;integrated
security=SSPI";
The problem arises
after I login to the web application (I use the user DOMAIN_ASomeUser where
SomeUser is a user who has permissions set up to make all of the database
calls). After logging in however, when I go to a page that makes a database
call I get the following error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user
'DOMAIN_AWEBSERVER$'.
It seems that for some
reason, .NET is not passing the login name SomeUser, but instead is passing
SERVERNAME$. Would anyone pls have any ideas how I can implement this. Any guide or references would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

We are using a VB application with a "dsnless" connection. It is not able to connect to the SQL box using integrated WinNT authentication. Receive the below error message:
Run-time error '-2147217843 (80040e4d)':
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login Failed
We can connect to our test SQL box with using the same application with no problem. The only difference we can see is the clustering on the "real" box.
We are using the following program string to connect to both boxes with the exception of the server we connect to:
"driver={SQL Server};server=server;uid=;pwd=;database=pubs"
Any info. would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings Folks,
We have a SQL Server Reporting Services instance running SP2. I have attempted to add a domain group in a trusted domain to the server to enable regular users to access reports. I have added this group to the instance folder as a SYSTEM USER and home as BROWSER. I am allowing those settings to be inherited down through the folders (reports and data sources) to the reports. My test user in this report receives:
The permissions granted to user 'DOMAINuser' are insufficient for performing this operation.
(log shows HTTP 500)
when the user attempts to use the URL to go directly to the report. If we try to navigate from HOME and walk the folders the user sees a blank HOME page.
I have used other groups with no problem.
Is there something I am missing in setting up the security environment? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mark

We have upgraded to SQL Server 2005 and Window 2003 from SQL Server 2000 and Windows 2000, and have been having all kinds of problems with security of our web applications. We have been forced to put the system account of the web server as a user in the database in order for the web applications to work. We have lost the ability to control security at the user/role level. Is this the way security is going to work in Windows 2003/SQL Server 2005? How do I use integrated security so that I can secure web pages and database objects?

But how can i say, in the definition of a linked server (at the remote machines) to swicth security system ?
If it is possible i could enter a fixed domain-account in that users fields, but i suppose that this field was intended for SqlServer security.
