SRS 2005 Excel Rendering Limitations Cannot Exceed 65,000 Rows
Nov 16, 2007
Okay, when will SRS 2005 support Office 2007 extensions.
I find it hard to believe that a service pack has not been releaseed to support Office 2007. If there is I apologize in advance for this message.
Info: Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.WrapperReportRenderingException: An error occurred during rendering of the report. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportRendering.ReportRenderingException: An error occurred during rendering of the report. ---> System.Exception: Excel Rendering Extension : Number of rows in the Excel sheet exceeded the limit of 65536 rows.

Environment:
Running this code on my PC via VS 2005
.Net version 2.0.50727 on the server (shown in IIS)
Code is in ASP.NET 2.0 and is a VB.NET Console application
SSIS 2005
Problem & Info:
I am bringing in an Excel file. I need to first strip out any non-detail rows such as the breaks you see with totals and what not. I should in the end have only detail rows left before I start moving them into my SQL Table. I'm not sure how to first strip this information out in SSIS specfically how down to the right component and how to actually code the component to do this based on my Excel file here: http://www.webfound.net/excelfile.xls
Then, I assume I just use a Flat File Source coponent or something to actually take the columns in the Excel and split into an OLE DB Datasource to shove each column into a corresponding column in my SQL Server Table. I have used a Flat File Source in the past to do so with a comma delimited txt file but never tried with an Excel.
Desired Help:
How to perform
1) stripping out all undesired rows
2) importing each column into sql table

Hi guys,
i have a client who is dissatisfied with the merged columns and rows produced when SSRS renders to Excel, it prevents them from easily copying and pasting data into another workbook.
Is there going to be any work done in this area of the product in the near future? My understanding is that this 'issue' has been around for quite some time, and shortly after the SSRS2005 RTM release the team were going to look at tidying up the Excel rendering. Can anyone from MS make an official comment on this?
Thanks,

Ok guys, here's the problem. Normally if I were sorting a report that needed to be rendered to pdf or excel, I'll sort the data in the dataset before loading it into the reportviewer in my code. This is in vb, for example:
dataSetName.Tables(0).DefaultView.Sort = "field ASC"
But for this particular case, I have to load the data into the report first, because in the actual report I have to combine two columns based on certain criteria (i do this using an expression for a column in my table) , and after those two columns are combined then they must be sorted.
But since the data is already loaded into the reportviewer I can't sort like I normally would, the report is rendered in either excel or pdf so interactive sort is pointless. I can't sort through table or properties or the properties of the text box because both fields are combined and you can only sort based on one field.
Any ideas?

We have a reporting system where the default rendering format is HTML.
HOwever, in some cases user may export the data into Excel aftergenerating
the report in HTML. Howveer, this export is taking too much time. eg 5500
row report in HTML takes around 8 minutes to export into excel. Is there a
workaround for this? Please note that default rendering has to be in HTML
only.
Also another feature noticed is that in RS 2005, the report server execution
log seems to be logging seperate entries for export feature as well. This
was not happening in RS2000. Is this a new feature in RS2005 or is the
underlying SP for the new report being called again when the export to excel
happens?
Any help would be appreciated

Hi all
When using a subscription to send mail, I find that the report can be sent in any format apart from Excel, which gives me the error: "Failure sending mail: Unspecified error". As you can imagine, this doesn't give me much to go on!
I want to use Excel format as it retains the drilldown functionality (hiding / unhiding rows). The ExecutionLog has the status as rsSuccess, but Subscription tab for the report shows the error.
Any thoughts would be most welcome!

Hi all,I have recently implemented a SQL 2005 cluster using SQL 2005 Standardon Windows 2003 Enterprise edition. Both nodes have 4GB of RAM and according to the datasheet, SQL 2005Standard can support the OS maximum memory amount and Win2K3 EntEdition can support 64GB!However, in Enterprise Manager, if I go to the "Memory" tab of theinstance properties I can't increase the memory beyond 2147483647(which I assume is around 2GB).I don't have AWE enabled but am unsure as to the ramifications of this.Any advice anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks,Ian

Is there a document/technical article/white paper, basically, some information as to what can be exported into a particular format and what cannot be.
I have a report which is fine when exporting to Excel but doesnt export to XML or CSV. All I get in XML or CSV is just a heading. I am thinking, may be its not right to export that report into XML or CSV formats.
Has this happened to anybody before? Any advise is appreciated.

I've created a database design and I'm trying to figure out if it's workable or not. I have 2 tables in particular that are sparse (20 columns, but only a few have data - about 100 bytes/row) but will grow very large - to the tune of 700 million rows.
My question is whether or not there is a problem with SQL Server 2005 having 1.5+ billion rows of data even though it will likely only take up 100 gigs or so on disk. Anyone have experience in large numbers of rows like this? We're still doing testing as far determining how slow queries will get.
Thanks,
Craig

SQL Express Ed is limited to one CPU, what happens if the CPU is a dual core CPU? Does SQL Express care? Does it see a dual core as a single CPU?
As for memory, stupid question, SQL Express is limited to 1 GB RAM, if I run it on a server with say 4GB of ram packed into it, will it affect SQL Express' performance? Will SQL Express even run if there is more than 1GB available? Or will SQL Express simply ignore the extra RAM with no negative consequences?
Thanks,
Andy

I am looking for a doc (BOL, etc.) which enumerates things like limits on the number of columns which can be replicated, or limits on the size of the row. BOL covers this for 2000, but I can not find it in BOL 2005.

Dear,
I'm building an ASP.NET application using C# language and SQL Server 2000. This application is dedicated to be hosted on a VIsta Machine.Unfortunately Vista does not supports SQL SERVER 2000 so i must migrate to the SQL SERVER 2005. Since the application is a small application, we couldn't afford buying an SQL SERVER 2005 License so i decided to use SQL SERVER 2005 Express Edition. But i would like to know exactly what are the Limitation on the Express Edition to see if it will work with my application or No. Please Can anyone refer any document that describes in details all the limitation of the Express Edition ??? Thanks a lot.

Hi,
Apologies for the generic subject heading but I have a client who at my suggestion has implemented a reporting solution using SSRS. However, we are now finding serious limitations with this solution, primarily regarding exporting matrix data to Excel. The major concern is that after exporting matrix data you cannot sort, filter or format properly as we cannot repeat the group data, merged cells is also another big problem.
They are now seriously looking at bringing in different technology to address these problems and I was wondering if anybody had any positive ideas, as to how I can provide a way forward and overcome our issues?
Can I easily add an add-in to the existing export options, does SQL 2008 offer any improvements, are there any 3rd party offerings out there?
Grateful for any advice.

When expoting data from excel to sql server table, using SSIS package, after exporting is done, how would i check source rows are equal to destination rows. If not to throw an error message.
How can we handle transactions in SSIS
1. when some error/something happens during export and the # of rows are not exported fully to destination, how to rollback the transaction in SSIS.
Any sort of help would be highly appreciated.

For the last two years I've had an application running in production which would generate and display its reports as PDF via RS 2005. It would take user parameters, render the report, and my application would take the PDF bytestream from RS and save it to a file on disk, then request Windows to open the file. This has worked very smoothly.
Recently there has been a push in my company to get Adobe Acrobat 8 deployed, and apparently the same PDFs which have been working all this time will cause Acrobat 8 to choke. By choke, I mean that Acrobat will load into memory but have some sort of problem with the PDFs, and never show up. The users, not realizing what is going on, will then ask for the same report again, causing two stalled instances of Acrobat to be opened now, etc.
Removing the new acrobat and replacing it with Acrobat 7 solves the problem. Long term, this is not a good solution however... Has anyone else had a similar experience? I've googled around and have come up empty.

I have designed a fairly simple report in report designer that uses an analysis services cube as its input, and a basic matrix object as the primary design component. Cube performance either via object browser in Analysis Services or via connection from Excel is great. It does exactly what you build a cube for, i.e. it builds aggregations you can get to quickly. However rendering from a report designer report within Report Manager is a different story.
Even though this report is being rendered from an execution snapshot, it is painfully slow at opening and closing different levels of drill down. The report does have six levels of drill down, which I am sure is a factor. If I use a smaller dataset, performance does become more acceptable. However, I don't consider the requirements of my report to be all that extraordinary.
My conclusion thus far is that larger data sets with many possible page renderings are not the best candidates for HTML rendered reports. In this case Microsoft's cube analysis add-in to Excel might be a better choice. Thoughts and feedback on either how to improve the rendering speed or other presentation alternatives that would perform better would all be welcome.

First of all, this is not in reference to using SRS (SQL Reporting Services) to render a report and then use one of the extensions to render the complete report as a pdf, tiff, excel etc. We have an opportunity to render a list of claims and then embed the supporting docs for each of the claims within the report. We don't have an issue referencing jpg and gif images via URLs and then rendering them within the report after the grid information. We do have an issue rendering tiff images within the report.
You can insert an image object into SRS at design time and have it render and you can convert a complete report to a tiff image but I cannot find a way to be able to render a tiff image when running the report. All you get is the red "x".
My question is has anyone encountered the same issue and, if so, what did you do to resolve the issue?
Thank you,
J Z

Yes, I do know what this means and why the error is thrown but this is not my question.
I have two servers that are both running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 200 SP3. Below are the results from both servers using @@version
Sever 1 (BB)
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86)
Dec 17 2002 14:22:05
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation
Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)
Server 2 (Genesis)
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86)
Dec 17 2002 14:22:05
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation
Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)
These servers are identical or so it seems. I've got a real ugly query that uses views and a derived table to get results. The problem is the 256 limit message only comes up on one server and on the other (Genesis) the query runs fine. I get the error though it reads a 260 limit on a box with SP4 applied. I've also run the query on a box that is Windows 2003, sql2k and sp4 and the query runs but not on a similar server here. This is all very odd. Please note that the database structure, views, etc are all exactly the same as far as I know.
Any suggestions? There seems to be no pattern between versions of Windows and/or SP levels.

I'm trying to add a custom report format to ssrs 2005 as per this [URL] I've added the code snippets in the example to three different ssrs 2005 server RSReportServer.config files but it does not work i.e do not show up in the export drop down when rendering report.
I've tried starting and stopping reporting services and it still does not works.
I've also modified the existing csv extension  with different options to see if it works but to no avail. However it works with SSRS2008 R2 . In fact it works right after I saved the config file, no restart needed. For SSRS2005 the file is in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.3Reporting ServicesReportServer. I checked the registry setting  just to make sure I'm looking at the correct installation 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', 'SOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsClientSetup', 'SQLPath' The three ssrs2005 instances are in three different physical servers and the problem is with all of them so it is not an isolated incident. I've dbowner rights to all three servers. The server versions are 9.0.4060, 9.0.4035 and 9.0.4053

Hi,
I have to import data from Excel to SQL Server using SSIS. My fields in sql don't take null values however for some reason i don't understand I see that the SSIS is also trying to import null rows into the database. For example I have the following excel file:
Name Postcode State
XXX 123 ON
YXX 345 IO
The rows following the last line are all blank but when I preview the Excel Source data flow task it returns the empty rows as null and therfore, my package fails as db fields don't accept null values.
How can I prevent SSIS from taking null rows? Can I maybe write a query in SSIS to say only to take rows where postcode<>null ?
Thanks in advance for any help i get :-)
