I have a SQL Server CE 3.1 database, which I want to connect to.
Browsing through the documentation, It's not clear to me which tools to use for this.
I have installed VS 2005 express edition (with sp1), but it can't connect to .sdf and
version VS 2008 only connects to SS CE 3.5.
The tools installation file ssce31vstools-ENU.exe file doesn't install on express edition
it seems, as I get an error message, that the patch is not valide.
I also installed the SS Management studio, but it doesn't seem to be able to handle .sdf.
Am I missing something obvious here? I am simply trying to access and modify a SS CE 3.1

Hello, How are you? I have a problem when I try to create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE. When I€™m going to choose the data source, the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition provider doesn€™t appear in the list. I work for a school district and our business lab is looking at using Visual Studio.net and since MSDE is being replaced by SQL Server Express 2005, will that work with Visual Studio.net for creating applications.
We are new to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. We are going to develope a solution for one of our client and we have to decide on which database to use for the solution. Client wanted to have a low cost solution. Thus we were not in a position to push them for SQL Sever 2000.
In the process, we also thought of having MySQL as one of the option. Another option we have is to use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
We wanted to know if SQL Server 2005 Express Edition can be used with Visual Studion 2003 (Ver 1.1) or it can only be used with Visual Studio 2005 (Ver 2.0)?

I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases.
To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect.
To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1".
Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation?
Might I need an upgrade to some other components? My Management Studio Version is:

I am attempting to use the SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (Management Studio) to create/manage a Compact Edition 3.5 database. My problem is that I cannot even create/open the compact database in Management Studio. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. TIA
Problem Creating the Compact Database:
Open 2008 Management Studio
From menu choose File | Connect Object Explorer...
Choose SQL Server Compact Edition as the Server type.
Choose <New Database...> as the Database file.
Browse to folder where file will be created (C:MyDatabase#1.sdf was used in my example)
Leave all other field as default selections OR make changes, either way it does not work.
Click OK.
At this point the OK button just becomes disabled and nothing happens. Problem Opening An Existing Compact Database:
Open 2008 Management Studio
From menu choose File | Connect Object Explorer...
Choose SQL Server Compact Edition as the Server type.
Choose <Browse for more...> as the Database file and locate a ".sdf" file that I created using VS2008.
Enter password, if any.
Click OK.

I am redevoping an application originally written in Visual Studio 6, Accessdb ; and Embedded ce.
I am now using Visual Studio 2005 (with the Windows Mobile extensions); SQL Compact. This is on a Vista machine. I am new to this environment.
I have the Visual Studio and the SQL Compact installed and have written some very basic programs. It is progressing, but I am stuck on a few issues:
-- What tool should I be using to manage the SQL Compact DB; I have seen conflicting notes on the net. At this point in time I can use the SQL Query and wizard within Studio 2005, but would like to know if there is front end for SQL Compact.
-- I am struggling with the interface to SQL Compact from within VS 2005. Specifically, if I try to run a "CREAT TABLE ...." command from code it appears to complete, but the table is not created. If I run same "CREATE TABLE " from the query pane available within VS 2005, a warning message comes up along the lines of "CREATE TABLE ... not suported" / "Cannot display this query graphically <or somthing along these line -- don't have the dev environment in front of me write now>" with the warning window having a heading of "...SQL Diffs...". Once I click through this warning, the table is created.
-- Once I get past this initial learning curve, I will be getting data from an SQL server into SQL Compact and then onto a windows mobile PDA. Ideally I would like to dump Schema and data from SQL Server in a form that SQL Compact db (via VB program) be able to import. Any pointers?
I've got a big problem reinstalling the just released VS2005 Tools:
I've installed them, but then I've deinstalled them to first deinstall RC1 and install the just released RTM/W(?) of the runtime.
But since then I was not able to reinstall the VS2005 Tools: The installer just says, that a required program for the upgradepatch is missing or another version is installed.
I've also tried to reinstall SP1 of VS 2005, with the same result.
BTW, I just wanna mention, that it is very complex to look through the new released Compact Edition releases. For example for the runtime it is required that the english release is installed before another localized release. But the localized releases are not called "Language Packs" (what they are) and do not verify that the english version is already installed. Also I'm interested what the recommended installation order is for installing on a developer computer eg. in German. First the VS2005 Tools or the SDK or the runtime?
Is it possible to use SQL Server Compact Edition v3.5 with SQL Server Management Studio? When I attempt to connect to a 3.5 database I get the following error:
"You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition Database..."
I am using v3.5 beta 2.
If not, is there anything out there that provides a Query Analyzer like interface for viewing data that works with v3.5?

I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.
I've installed Visual Basic 2005 express edition & tried to connect to SQL Server 2005 express edition. I noticed that VB2005 Express Edition doesn't have any OLEDB provider for SQL Server. The only OLEDB Provider is for M.Access. Is this correct? if so, what should i do if i want to connect SQL Server 2005 express edition with VB2005 express edition by using OLEDB connection type?

I have an Excel add-in that connects to a SQL Server Express 2005database. I've decided to create a configuration piece for this add-inin Visual Studio 2005 Express. I added a data connection using the dataconnection wizard and all appeared to go well. Anyways when I attemptto open SQL Server Express to administer the database, it was corruptedand I had to restore it.I eventually got it to work correctly (I'm pretty sure I followedpretty much the same steps as before), but I was just wondering ifanyone had experienced problems like this? I find it a bit scary thatit may be that easy to corrupt the database by just creating a dataconnection.
So i am getting an error of "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 205, this faliure may be caused by the fact that under the defualt setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections.(ProviderQL Net work Interfaces, error: 26- Eror Locating Server?Instance Specified)
So i have Windows Xp SP2,750 mb Ram, 1.6 Ghz, Uninstalled Everything (visual basic express,SQL express) then reinstalled everthing all over again. Same problem . Any Ideas???
we've got a SQL Server 2005 which replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.5. Every 10 to 20 synchronisations we're getting the error mentioned above. A Soft reset of the device helps to make the synchronization working again.
Why is this error happening and how can we resolve this?
BTW, we've also running system that replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.0 without having this problems.
Hi there, after some hours of installing and experiments i can now open and sql server compact database (sdf) iam also able to create a new database and add tables and columns. (everything with the ms sql server management studio express)
i can also open the northwind database. but iam not able to view the data .
if i rightclick on a normal database table i can choose ->open table and see its content.
but on a compact table i have at rightclick only
edit table properties delete
refresh
how can i see the data in the table or add new content ?
i don't know if it was mentioned before, but i solved the issue that Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express won't show the option to create/modify a sql compact database by installing not this Version:

I currently have Visual Studio .NET 2003 installed on my computer and I am trying to develop an application that would require the use of SQL data base on a network using C++. Would I just need to install the SQL Express and Express Manager to get Visual Studio working with the database? Or do I need to also install Visual Studio C++ 2005 express to get the data base features working correctly.
Will the SQL Express SP2 update the Installer package that comes with Visual Studio 2005 so that SQL Express SP2 is included with a ClickOnce or MSI based installer?
Including SP2 on Windows Update is a step in the right direction, but I (and I assume others) really hate the idea of burdening our users with the additional step of obtaining the SP2 update immediately after installing our application. This is especially cumbersome if they are using dial-up Internet connections which, unfortunately, many of our customers continue to use.
I installed SQL 2005 express edition in my pc (Pro XP), then I can login from SQL 2005 Managerment Studio Express. After a few days later, I can't do it and an error message as belows:
