SSIS CDC Components On Asynchronous Secondary Replica

Jan 15, 2015

MSDN states the following on: Readable Secondary Replicas (AlwaysOn Availability Groups) for SQL Server 2014:

Limitations and Restrictions:

Change tracking and change data capture are not supported on secondary databases that belong to a readable secondary replica:

Change tracking is explicitly disabled on secondary databases.
Change data capture can be enabled on a secondary database, but this is not supported.

This confuses me: You can not track the changes. However you can enable CDC?

The scenario I am trying to achieve is to use SSIS CDC components on an asynchronous secondary replica. Is this possible? If not what would be other viable approaches?

SQL 2012 :: Backup On Primary Replica In Case Of Secondary Replica Is Down

Jun 9, 2014

I have 2 SQL Server replicas configured on SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn. e.g. SQL1 & SQL2.

I have configured backup job on both SQL Server with the following statement. and the job occurs every 10 minutes.

•declare @DBNAME sysname,@sqlstr varchar(500)
set @DBNAME = 'dba'
IF (sys.fn_hadr_backup_is_preferred_replica(@DBNAME)=0)
BEGIN
--Select 'This is not the preferred replica, exiting with success';

[Code] ...

I turned off SQL2 for Windows maintenance. So there is only SQL1 is online. Afterwards. I checked the backup folder and didn't see any new backup files was created after SQL2 was offline. I rerun the job. It still doesn't backup database on the Primary Replica. Then I searched on SQL Server Book online. It says

Prefer Secondary

Specifies that backups should occur on a secondary replica except when the primary replica is the only replica online. In that case, the backup should occur on the primary replica. This is the default option.

According to what it says, it should backup on the Primary Replica.

SQL 2012 :: AlwaysOn Secondary Replica - Resolving State

May 21, 2013

I have an AlwaysOn Availability group configured between 2 nodes (Synchronous)

Automatic failover was working fine until recently

I can failover between the nodes manually but automatic failover doesn't seem to be working. In my earlier test, I would shut down the SQL Service on the primary and within seconds, the secondary replica would take over. Recently I have performed the same test and the secondary replica enters the resolving state and the DB in unavailable.

I have tried everything here: [URL] ....

The only change I made was changing the availability mode from Synchronous to Asynchronous - Could that be the cause?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Cannot Failover AG To Secondary Replica

Aug 11, 2015

We are not able to failover the AG to secondary replica. The process gets timed out and AG goes to resolving mode. Had to reboot the box in order to switch the AG back to primary node. We even rebuilt the whole AG from scratch but the issue remains.

Failed to bring availability group 'xxxx' online. The operation timed out. Verify that the local Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) node is online. Then verify that the availability group resource exists in the WSFC cluster. If the problem persists, you might need to drop the availability group and create it again. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 41131). The step failed.

Not much information is available in the logs.

DB Engine :: Table Triggers On Read-only Secondary Replica?

Jun 30, 2015

I was hoping for some information regarding table triggers. We have databases that are part of an AlwaysOn availability group on SQL Server 2012. Some of the tables have table triggers defined. There are both types of triggers, INSTEAD OF and AFTER INSERT, etc.

From my understanding of how secondary read-only replicas work, I am assuming that these triggers have no impact at all when the database is a read-only secondary replica and they only fire when the database is the primary read-write database.

However, after doing a search on the internet, I have not been able to find a definitive source of information.

SQL 2012 :: Failover On 2 Servers AlwaysOn AG With Read-only Secondary Replica

Mar 28, 2014

What happens when an automatic failover occurs, in a two server AlwaysOn Availability Group configuration, where the secondary replica is configured as read-only?

Will it only allow read-only connections, or will it become read-write and can accept INSERT, UPDATES and DELETES when assigned the new role as Primary?

Is it correct that adding a third server/node, that just acts as passive and should be used for automatic failover, to support true HADR, would NOT need another license .. and that licenses would only be required for the previous Primary and Secondary (Read-Only) replicas?

SQL 2012 :: VLFs On AlwaysOn Primary Replica After Log Backup From Secondary

Aug 6, 2014

I was working on a job to send me info each morning about database file free space and was noticing some odd things when looking at the log file VLFs for one of my databases in an AlwaysOn availability group. When I run DBCC LOGINFO on the secondary replica for this database, I get what I expect and most VLFs have a status of 0 (indicating the VLFs are reusable or unused). When I run DBCC LOGINFO on the primary replica, all of the VLFs have a status of 2 (active or recoverable).

Since log backups on the secondary replica in AlwaysOn still truncate the log in the primary replica, I would expect that the VLFs in the primary replica would also be mostly in a reusable or unused state. My log file sizes are the same size on each server and my backups are completing successfully. what might be causing the VLFs on the primary replica to have a status of 2 in DBCC LOGINFO when taking log backups from the secondary replica?

Developing Custom Components By Extending The SSIS Stock Data Flow Components

Sep 7, 2006

Everything I've read says that custom data flow components are built by inheriting from the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.PipelineComponent class.

But the stock components such as the Derived Column data flow transformation must each be implemented by their own class. So how do I base my custom components on those classes? The documentation for the PipelineComponent class doesn't list any such subclasses.

An SSIS Job Runs Synchronous Or Asynchronous?

Mar 19, 2008

Porting an existing SQL 2k DTS job over to a SQL 2k5 SQL Server running SSIS.

Background:
The job loads data into an empty work table and performs some work before clearing out the work table.
This job runs every minute.

Question:
If the job happens to take longer than a minute, does SSIS create a second instance of the job?
Or perhaps it does what DTS did and reschedules the job for the next iteration?

Concern:
I need to know because there would be key contraint violations if another instance of the job started before the working table was cleared out.

Thanks in advance

Or do you just have to start form scratch?

SQL Server 2014 :: Modification Of SSIS Package With AlwaysOn Availability Replica?

Dec 1, 2014

We are currently using 2008 environment. We do have an SSIS Package running. The package used to run everyday and take the production server full backups and restore into the another server. Then do some delete commands and do some updates in that database on that server (We have some sensitive data other than Production we have to run that scripts in any environment). After run all those delete statements another team will read the data from that database.

We are planning to migrate to 2014 and set up always on and use the replica as the source. In this case how the package will work?

How to change that SSIS package. With the 2014 always on we are directly reading the data there is no backups to restore then how to run the delete statements?

SQL 2012 :: Existing Replica MDF File Size Increased In Size Than New Replica Install

Apr 14, 2015

Here are my scenarios:

We have an application with replicated environment setup on sql server 2012 . Users will have a replica on their machines and they will replicate to the master database. It has 3 subscriptions subscribed to the publications on the master db.

1) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with no sql server on it. After the initial synchronization(used replmerge tool) the mdf file has grown to 33gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studion . Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 84 gb with little empty free space available.

2) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with sql server 2008 on it. After the initial synchronization(used replmerge tool) the mdf file has grown to 49 gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studio , Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 90 gb with 16 gb free space available.

3) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with sql server 2012 on it. We have dropped the local database and recreated the local db and did the initial synchronization using replmerge tool. The mdf file has grown to 49 gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studio , Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 90 gb with 16 gb free space available.

Why it is allocating the space differently? This is effecting our initial replica set up times.

How To Market Custom SSIS Components?

Oct 10, 2007

Hi,
As a hobby, I am creating custom SQL Server Integration Services components, which are installed as an add-on to out of the box components. They are mainly used to reduce the development time and minimize the maintance overhead. I would like to know, how I should market them? What are the mediums to use? Since this is the first time, I am creating a software for mass markets, I would really appreciate your help while marketing this baby.

Just FYI, the first commercially available package that I develop is for creating text based files. My package connects to any OLE DB datasource. Executes the query and stores the output in a text file. It is very useful while developing database driven custom feeds. Instead of working with multiple dataflow tasks, data flow sources, you just need to configure one single component and the rest is taken care for you. Since, the package implements the standard Microsoft Task Editor, it is very easy to learn.

Thanks for your help.
Cem

Is It Possible To Version Custom SSIS Components?

Jul 17, 2006

Is it possible to use versioning at all with SSIS components?

My experience so far is that I have not figured out how version them at all, because if I change the version number, then apparently the <property name="UserComponentTypeName" ...> has to be changed in every single reference to the component, in every dataflow, in every single dtsx file that uses the component at all -- this will be a tremendous headache as some of this stuff is in source control. It seemsl clearly infeasible to check out and substitute and change all these references, and check them all back in, except very infrequently -- surely not feasible to do it for each small change.

I am in the habit of versioning dlls and assemblies, and actually changing at least a minor build number for each actual change, so I am a bit unhappy to find that apparently I cannot feasibly do this for a custom SSIS component :(

(I just find a dislike at apparently being forced to leave the version number invariant when I make code changes.)

What I would be very happy with, is if there were a way to adjust all the references in all the dtsx files, to refer to only the major and minor build numbers say, specifying that I am not picky about the revision numbers below those, so that it will find the latest component in the GAC matching the major and minor numbers.

That way I could still update the component version with each code change, which would make me happy, and not have to edit a zillion dtsx occurrences (not having to do that would also make me happy).

Anyone know if that is possible?

I'm hoping it is, and that it is only my ignorance at component references preventing me from doing so.

What SSIS Components Must Be Loaded Onto The Server?

Aug 4, 2006

What SSIS components must be loaded onto the server?

To run an SSIS ETL program, exactly what executable, components, programs, etc. must reside on the server that will be running the program. Our developers write an test their ETL programs locally, on their desktops or laptops, but must upload the scripts to the production server for execution. Obviously, they are not going load Visual Studio and SQL 2005, etc. up to the server just to run the scripts (tho SQL 2005 may be on the same box as one of the DB engines used for ETL).

Any info would be appreciated.

Complex Transformations (SSIS Components Vs TSQL)

Jun 13, 2006

Greetings SSIS friends,

I have been attempting to implement one of our numerous ETL processes in SSIS but hit a brick wall when I tried replacing a complex stored procedure with a series of Merge Join components.

In the end, I had to settle with using a SQL task which merely calls the stored procedure and this proved to be the better option as the other version where I used SSIS components only took forever to run.

How do people cope with complex transformations?! Do you guys opt for pure TSQL to perform complex transformations and use SSIS components for control flow+simple(ish) data flow tasks?

I am confused.

SSIS Performance Question For Custom Components

Nov 15, 2007

I have a SQL Server 2005 Package (32 bit, 4 processors/16 GB of RAM, 3 GB switch for SSIS) with 1 DataFlow and 5 Custom Components:

> An OLEDB Source that reads a stoed proc from Sybase
> 3 Transform Components that perform: 6-required fields check, 4-lookups (3 cached, 1 non-cached), and a calculation that is performed(called) from a .NET Library.
> A SQL Destination that uses the .NET BulkCopy Class to insert the data.

It takes about 3 hours to load 1 million records that contain 46 columns (the largest being a varchar(100)). I have tried a good number of tuning options as well as indexing/SQL techniques to improve perfromance.

Some pieces of info:
1) We dynamically create the buffer during runtime based on an SSIS variable.
2) The actions of the components are determined at runtime through config files.
We do these two things so we can have multiple data flows run through the same package for better scalability and flexibility. Since we are dynamically creating the buffer I can NOT use any of the out of the box components because of lineage and metadata inconsistency issues.

3) I noticed on PerfMon that I am spooling buffers to disk after 100K rows.
I realize this is bad, but what are my alternatives?
Should I go to 64 bit? Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks in advance,
Anthony
