SSIS Expression Result Limit Of 4000 Bytes

Feb 6, 2007

I have a package with an input column that is varchar(8000).

I want to strip the first byte off of this column and put it in one result column and the remainder of the field I want to go to a second column. If the input column is an empty string, I want to return NULL.

Pulling the first byte off works fine, no issues, however putting the remainder of the input column into an output column is giving me a little trouble.

If I use this expression:

LEN(FLD1) == 0 ? NULL(DT_WSTR,1) : SUBSTRING(FLD1, 2, LEN(FLD1) - 1))

I get an error that says my expression evaluates to a string of greater than 4000 bytes.

If I do this instead:

LEN(FLD1) == 0 ? NULL(DT_WSTR,1) : RTRIM(SUBSTRING(FLD1, 2, 7999))

The expression passes muster but I get the warning that I will be truncating the column at 4000 bytes.

In actuality, I don't care if the result column is truncated after 4000 bytes. I find the second solution to be a bit clunky and I'm wondering if anyone can give me a reason why the first solution won't evaluate but the second will?

NVarChar 4000 Limit

Mar 3, 2008

I'm using a function which splits a comma delimitted list of numbers which I call from a stored procedure. The list is defined as a NVarChar which has a maximum length of 4000 characters. I often need to pass more than 4000 characters. If I do so, I receive the error message below. Is there any way around this limitation? Thanks.

The 4000 Character Limit For Expressions

Apr 4, 2006

I am building rather large SQL statements using expressions and I am about to hit the 4000 character limit. First, what were the reasons for setting such a low limit? With it in place you are forced to come up with other solutions, but perhaps that was the intention.

Speaking of limits, what are the limits for storing a value in a string that is defined in a package configuration file? What are the limits when creating a string within a script task and then use it to set a string variable in the package? What are the limits when using a string value as an input parameter to an Execute SQL Task using OLE DB? Do these differ depending on the connection type?

I guess I'm getting a bit paranoid about limits, but I don't want to hit any others late in the design.

Lars

Need Workaround For 4000-character Limit On CLR Sproc Parameters

May 11, 2007

I've written a managed (C#) stored procedure with the following signature:

[Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure]
public static void Sproc(string startDate, string endDate, string idList)...

Sometimes when I call this sproc, my comma-separated list of IDs exceeds 4000 characters. How can I get around this problem?

I guess I need something equivalent to NVarchar(MAX), but for CLR sprocs instead of TSQL.

Any thoughts?

OLEDB Data Source Limit Lenght Of String To 4000

Feb 5, 2008

Hello,
I have 2 table, "table1" is the source one and the other one "table2" is the destination.
Columns in Table1 and in Table2 are nvarchar(max).
Data loaded from table1 is performed by SSIS OLEDB data flow source, I have found out that opening "Data flow Path Editor" in the Metadata, columns are as: DT_WSTR with lenght 4000.

First question:
Why SSIS limit the column to 4000.

Then I get some error for this issue, with the error:
input column "col1" (xxxx) and reference column named (coln) have incompatible data type.

As written before both columns are string, the problem is that SSIS limit the lenght of the string to 4000.

How can I solve this issue?

Thank

Limit Of 8060 Bytes Per Table Row

Sep 30, 2015

I thought I understand the notion in the Title until I ran the query below. This query inserts a 5000 byte value into two columns in the same record and sql (2008) doesn't complain.

-- drop table table_1

create table table_1(
[mychar1] [varchar](8000) NULL,
[mychar2] [varchar](8000) NULL
)

insert into table_1 ( mychar1, mychar2)
values (replicate('a', 5000) , replicate('b', 5000))
select * from table_1

-- truncate table table_1

I just noticed that using   Replicate ('a', 50000) doesn't cause an issue either. I'll be reviewing the replicate documentation too.

VERY Wide Rows, 8060 Bytes Row Size Limit && SPARSE Columns

Apr 23, 2008

Hi,
I€™m trying to create a VERY wide table, with 1,000 columns of type varchar(MAX), nullable.
The CREATE TABLE statement (both in SQL 2005 & 2008), gives the following warning:

Warning: The table "WIDE_TABLE" has been created, but its maximum row size exceeds the allowed maximum of 8060 bytes. INSERT or UPDATE to this table will fail if the resulting row exceeds the size limit.

When I insert data into the table, filling all columns with small, 10-byte string values, I get the following error:

Msg 50000, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_pivot, Line 118

Cannot create a row of size 15034 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060.

I€™d like to verify this observation: each row is created with 2000 bytes of offset data (2 byte * 1000 columns), 125 bytes for null bitmap (1000 columns / 8 bits) and some more €œwasted€? row information. This leaves less than 6K for the data itself. But since not all columns can fit within the page, forwarding pointers in the row need to be created, 24 byte per column, which very quickly add up to more than 8K, thus the error. So the 8K limit is met for much less columns than the max 1024 column restriction.

Furthermore, in SQL 2008, SPARSE columns will not solve the problem (maybe save some €œmetadata€? space in case the columns are null, but if not, I€™m with the same problem again, or even worse, since now each value takes more storage space. The max 30,000 columns in 2008 is only for cases where the column values are really sparse€¦

Is this the right observation? if so, is there a workaround besides splitting to multiple tables?

Thanks,

Aviv.

Is there any way to increase the max string literal for expressions. Please help.

CASE Function Result With Result Expression Values (for IN Keyword)

Aug 2, 2007

I am trying to code a WHERE xxxx IN ('aaa','bbb','ccc') requirement but it the return values for the IN keyword changes according to another column, thus the need for a CASE function.

WHERE GROUP.GROUP_ID = 2 AND DEPT.DEPT_ID = 'D' AND WORK_TYPE_ID IN ( CASE DEPT_ID WHEN 'D' THEN 'A','B','C' <---- ERROR WHEN 'F' THEN 'C','D ELSE 'A','B','C','D' END )

I kept on getting errors, like

Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 44Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'WHERE'.
which leads me to assume that the CASE ... WHEN ... THEN statement does not allow mutiple values for result expression. Is there a way to get the SQL above to work or code the same logic in a different manner in just one simple SQL, and not a procedure or T-SQL script.

Limit On Length Of File Attachment Expression?

Apr 20, 2006

I'm dynamically attaching some files to an email. I'm using an expression to build something similar to this:

@[User::FilePath] + @[User::FileName1] + (DT_STR,30,1252)YEAR( GETDATE()) + (DT_STR,30,1252)MONTH( GETDATE()) + (DT_STR,30,1252)DAY( GETDATE()) + ".csv" + "|" + @[User::FilePath] + @[User::FileName2] + (DT_STR,30,1252)YEAR( GETDATE()) + (DT_STR,30,1252)MONTH( GETDATE()) + (DT_STR,30,1252)DAY( GETDATE()) + ".csv"

BOL says to use a pipe delimiter to send multiple attachments. This works if I only have a couple of files. Once I get a few more attachments built in the expression builder I get a truncation error. If I build the whole expression in notepad and past it into the property window it also gets truncated. I see in the MSDN library that some expressions may be limited to 4000 bytes. I'm nowhere near that. Maybe a thousand bytes at most.

Question 1: Does anyone know if certain expressions have smaller byte limits?

Question 2: Is there a smaller byte limit for the file attachment value?

Question 3: Is there way I could build this string outside of the file attachment property and assign it to a variable and then use this variable in the file attachment property?

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

SQL Server 2012 :: Internal Error - Expression Services Limit Has Been Reached

Aug 5, 2015

Internal error: An expression services limit has been reached. Please look for potentially complex expressions in your query, and try to simplify them.

We are not getting anywhere near the expression limit so I cannot understand why we are suddenly receiving this error. 2 weeks ago this query was running fine, no updates have been rolled out to the SQL database servers or application servers but the error is suddenly appearing on both prod and dev environments.

How To Limit The Select Query Result Based On Start And End Parameter

I am a newbie to SQL Server.
I have a problem, in filtering the records returned by a query.
I have a table which contains 1 million records, it has a user defined primary key which is of character type.
The problem is i need to filter the output of a select query on the table based on two parameters i send to that query.
The first parameter will be the starting row number and the second one is the ending row number.
I need a procedure to do this.

For Eg:
MyProc_GetRowsFromBigTable(startRowNo,endRowNo) should get me only the rows in the specified range.

It seems that at a certain point, the Loop task will fail.  I've tested a few different scenarios and they all fail at the same point... the 98th loop.

The error message is below:

[Execute SQL Task] Error: Failed to acquire connection "ADO.NET Connection". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection.

I'm guessing that there is a limit to the number of connections that can be started at any one time.  But I figured SSIS wouldn't start a new connection for every SQL command.

Any insight on this issue?  Anyone have an idea for a work around?

Limit On SSIS String Variable Size, Trying To Get Big Xml File Into Xml Data Field

Nov 28, 2007

I have a SSIS package that opens an xml file, puts the contents into a string, then runs a stored procedure that dumps it into an xml column in a table. One of the xml files is huge. Putting the data into a ssis string causes an error. The length of the string variable is 58,231,886. The file will only get bigger.

How else can I get this data into a SQL Server XML field.

SSIS-Expression Builder

Apr 18, 2008

am trying to do the following in SSIS.
I have Execute Process Task, in which I have the values are set for Executable, Arguments and working Directory manually. I keep changing this if the Connection Manager points to Dev or when it points to QA or to Prod. Instead I want to do like this.
If my Connection Manager points to Dev, the Executale , Arguments and Working Directory should automatically change. Else if it points to QA, the Executale , Arguments and Working Directory should automatically change and similarly for Prod.
Is this possible in Expression Builder in Execute Process Task. If so, how?.
Thank you

How To Assign An Expression With A Ssis Variable?

Jul 19, 2007

Hi all of you,

That's an easy one. I've got a Send Mail task which might send a message in plain text along with a SSIS variable.

Something like that:

'La tabla "' + SUBSTRING( @[System:ackageName], 3,20) + "' se ha cargado correctamente'

TIA for that,

Quick SSIS Expression Builder Question

Jul 26, 2007

This works:
len ((DT_WSTR,2)DATEPART("mm", getdate()))==1 ? (DT_WSTR,1)0 + (DT_WSTR,1)DATEPART("mm", getdate()) : (DT_WSTR,4)DATEPART("mm", getdate())

This doesn't:
"dataware/"+ len ((DT_WSTR,2)DATEPART("mm", getdate()))==1 ? (DT_WSTR,1)0 + (DT_WSTR,1)DATEPART("mm", getdate()) : (DT_WSTR,4)DATEPART("mm", getdate())

I tried a couple of different things at this point, where am I missing the cast? Before len? Cast to what?
