SSIS Flat File To DB Column Mappings

Oct 2, 2007

hi -
I am totally new to SSIS etc and SQL 2005.
I have a dts task to recreate in SSIS. I have done most of them and muddled my way through, but this basic problem has got me stuck.
When mapping columns from my file to my ole db output table, I want to map one input column onto two output columns, but it will only seem to let me select one destination column for each input?
I have tried shift/alt/ctrl etc to try to get it to map to both columns but it wont have it.
How do I do it?

Also, somehow my Dataflow Sources tab has gone from the toolbox, and I can't seem to get it back any way - I switched on everything I could see and all components etc, but it is not in there as an option. How do I get it back in the toolbox?

1 Flat File To 2 Destination Tables With Different Mappings :Please Help

Feb 21, 2007

Here is the Scenario.

I have a flat file with name "Employee.txt " (Full url: C:Employee.txt) .The File content is like this

Anil,Engineering,1997
Sunil,Sales,1981
Kumar,Inventory,1991
Rajesh,Engineering,1992

(Note: Items are Comma Seperated)

Now, i have a SQL Server database called "EmployeeDB" which has 2 tables "TblEmp1", "TblEmp2".
The Table is like this.

TblEmp1 : Columns
EmpName EmpDept EmpjoinDate

TblEmp2 : Columns
EName EDate Edept

using integration services (SSIS) i need code(vb.net or c#) to Create a dtsx package so that i can push the flat file content to these 2 tables.
And the condition is :

After Executing the package Data loaded in TblEmp1 should be like this

EmpName EmpDept EmpjoinDate
Anil Engineering 1997
Sunil Sales 1981
Kumar Inventory 1991
Rajesh Engineering 1992

(No change in order compared to source)
And Data loaded inTBLEmp2 should be like this

EName EDate Edept
Anil 1997 Engineering
Sunil 1981 Sales
Kumar 1991 Inventory
Rajesh 1992 Engineering

Now, i know that we need to do like this in wizard
1) Create a flat file source component.
2) Create flat file connection and set the properties of flat file (delimeters and other things)
3) Create a Multicast Component.
4) Create a Path between Flat file source and Multicast.
5) Create 2 destination component(each for a table).
6) Create path from multicast to 2 destination components
7) Create a OledbConnection and set table names for 2 destination components..
7) Now,i have to do mapping for destination1.8) Now, i have to do mapping for destination2( this mapping will be different from mapping done for destination1 because iam not inserting the data in the same order in which iam doing for TBLEmp1.

I have done it in wizard.I need to do it through code and i know that its not complicated.Please find the attached file with this mail.i have attached a screen shot of how i have done in wizard.The main problem is Mapping differently for 2 destinations from source.for 1st one we can have a forloop for mapping.but for 2nd one iam confused!!

How Do I Import A Varying Column Width Flat File Into A Table Using SSIS?

Apr 24, 2008

How do i import a Varying Column Width Flat file into a Table using SSIS?

I have a flat file that has 4 columns with varying width
Like I should read the file as
Col 1 - (1 to 10 Characters)
Col 2 - (12 to 21 Characters)
Col 3 - (22 to 35 Characters)
Col 4 - (36 to 38 Characters)
At the end of the record is a "LF"

I think "Fixed Width" Columns allow me to define a standard column length for all the columns.. Right?

Any thoughts on how to?

SSIS Randomly Empties Out Column Data While Using Flat File Source

Jan 12, 2007

I'm having a problem using the Flat File Source while using the underlying .Net classes to execute SSIS Packages. The issue is that for some reason when I load a flat file it Empty's out columns randomly. Its happening in the Flat File Source Task. By random I mean that most of the times all the data gets loaded but sometimes it doesnt and it empty's out column data. Interestingly enough this is random and even the emptying out of columns isnt a complete empty, its more like a 90% emtpying. Now you'll ask that is the file different everytime and the answer is NO. Its the same file everytime. If I run the same file everytime for 10 times it would empty out various columns maybe 1 of those times. This doesnt seem to be a problem while working with dtexec or the Package Executor utility. Need Help!!

SSIS Database Table To Flat File Destination With Column Headings

Sep 8, 2006

Hi,

I have a simple enough task to complete that I can€™t seem to find the answer to.

The task is this €“

Select table x from the database and write it to a flat file complete with that tables column headings.

Now I€™ve managed to set up an ole db datasource and selected the table and I€™ve also linked it to the flat file output.  So now I can generate a flat file from the database.  However no column headings appear in the flat file.

I can€™t seem to find anywhere (like a checkbox) that will also output the column headings to the flat file.

Now I can add in Headings manually in the properties of the Flat File Destination object but the columns that appear in the flat file don€™t appear to be in the order that I requested them in the SQL.

So the question is how do I automatically have the column headings appear for flat file output (ideally without me having to manually add them in).

If it can€™t be done and I have to use a vb.net script instead then would anyone have an example script of how to do it?

Thanks in advance for anyone who manages to answer this.

Matt.

Flat File Connection Manager Throws Error When A Column Gets Added To The Flat File

Dec 27, 2006

Hi,

I have a situation where a tab limited text file is used to populate a sql server table.

The tab limited text file comes from a third party vendor. There are fixed number of columns we need to export to the sql server table. However the third party may add colums in the text file. Whenenver the text file has an added column (which we dont need to import) the build fails since the flat file connection manager does not create the metadata for it again. The problem goes away  where I press the button "Reset Columns" since it builds the metadata then. Since we need to build the tables everyday we cannot automate it using SSIS because the metadata does not change automatically. Is there a way out in SSIS?

Output Column Width Not Refected In The Flat File That Is Created Using A Flat File Destination?

May 11, 2006

I am transferring data from an OLEDB source to a Flat File Destination and I want the column width for all of the output columns to 30 (max width amongst the columns selected), but that is not refected in the Fixed Width Flat File that got created. The outputcolumnwidth seems to be the same as the inputcolumnwidth. Is there any other setting that I am possibly missing or is this a possible defect?

Any inputs will be appreciated.

Integration Services :: Import Flat File Which Has Changing Column Order Using SSIS?

Jul 2, 2015

I have a flat with few columns

FirstName, lastName, Address
f1,l1,a1
f2,l2,a2

I build my SSIS package based on the above file.But now i receive files with different columns order let say

lastName,FirstNamr,Address
l1,f1,a1
L2,f2,a2
or
Address,FirstName,LastName
a1,f1,l1
a2,f2,l2

every time i receive multiple files in different order and i have to remap all my mappings. These are just a few columns and i have like 20 columns and the order can potentially change any time. so every time i have build new packages remap them etc.

through normal c# code it pretty easy. I tried to add script here but the script also needs a source and mapping so there is also a mapping issue. Is there a better way to do this.

Now, the strange thing is, as soon as I import the same column from an Excel file in which, for simplicity of "text to Excel" transfer I have all the columns defined as "text"(I have 170 columns), the import works just fine. The Excel file is just a straight out import into Excel of the flat file.

The only difference I see between the flat file and the Excel file is that an empty value in the flat file contains a single blank, while an empty "cell" in Excel contains nothing(cursor doesn't go to the right after clicking inside the cell).

By the way, the column in the SQL table is nullable, which is why I thought there should be no issues from an import value containing blanks exclusively.

Read Text File From Flat File Connection Manager SSIS

May 13, 2008

Hello Experts,
I am createing one task (user control) in SSIS. I have property grid in my GUI and 2 buttons (OK & Cancle).
PropertyGrid has Properties like SourceConnection, OutputConnection etc....right now I am able to populate Connections in list box next to Source and Output Property.

Now my question to you guys is depending on Source Connection it should read that text file associated with connection manager. After validation it should pick header (first line of text file bases on record type) and write it into new file when task is executed. I have following code for your reference. Please let me know I am going in right direction or not..
What should go here ?
->Under Class A

public override DTSExecResult Execute(Connections connections, VariableDispenser variableDispenser, IDTSComponentEvents componentEvents, IDTSLogging log, object transaction)

{

//Some code to read file and write it into new file

return DTSExecResult.Success;

}

public const string Property_Task = "CustomErrorControl";

public const string Property_SourceConnection = "SourceConnection";

public void LoadFromXML(XmlElement node, IDTSInfoEvents infoEvents)

{

if (node.Name != Property_Task)

{

throw new Exception(String.Format("Invalid task element '{0}' in LoadFromXML.", node.Name));

}

else

{

try

{

_sourceConnectionId = node.Attributes.GetNamedItem(Property_SourceConnection).Value;

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

infoEvents.FireError(0, "LoadFromXML", ex.Message, "", 0);

}

}

}

public void SaveToXML(XmlDocument doc, IDTSInfoEvents infoEvents)

{

try

{

// // Create Task Element

XmlElement taskElement = doc.CreateElement("", Property_Task, "");

doc.AppendChild(taskElement);

// // Save source FileConnection

XmlAttribute sourcefileAttribute = doc.CreateAttribute(Property_SourceConnection);

sourcefileAttribute.Value = _sourceConnectionId;

taskElement.Attributes.Append(sourcefileAttribute);

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

infoEvents.FireError(0, "SaveXML", ex.Message, "", 0);

}

}

In UI Class there is OK Click event.

private void btnOK_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

try

{

_taskHost.Properties[CustomErrorControl.Property_SourceConnection].SetValue(_taskHost, propertyGrid1.Text);

btnOK.DialogResult = DialogResult.OK;

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

Console.WriteLine(ex);

}

SSIS - Data Flow To Flat File - Insert At Start Of File

Oct 24, 2007

Hi all,

In a foreachloop, I am inserting records into a flat file which is working fine. But the thing is that as the file grows, it takes longer for it to locate the EOF(End of File) of the flat file so as to insert the records.

I have around 70-100 lines written to the file at each loop and there are more than 20k records to be looped. wihich means that at the end I should be having 1400k - 20000k line in the text file.

One solution would be to insert the records at the start of the file itself so that it does not has to lookup the EOF each time before writting.

Another would be to generate separate files and then merge it.

Any idea how can this can be done?

Beside this I have to zip the file and then SFTP to a given address.

Any suggestion or help would be welcome.

I have various front and back office applications that require local copies of this data in various formats. It is EXTREMELY tedious to remap all of the columns for each Transform Data Task required on these applications.

Is there a way to store all of the column mapping def's and import them into a new transform data task?

SSIS Flat File Import Help

Aug 28, 2007

I am trying to import a flat file into SQL Server 2005 using SSIS. I have never used it before and I am getting confused by the error I am receiving.

I have a link to a flat file, that gets sent through a Derived Column flow where dates in YYYYMMDD are changed to MM/DD/YYYY format. Then the string MM/DD/YYYY is converted to a date in a Data Conversion flow. And finally the data is put into a SQL Server table (currently with no rows).

The problem I am having is with a text field with the email address in it. The error I am getting is:

[Import Allstate Auto Club [1]] Error: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "email_source" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".

The problem is I can't see where in the flow the problem is. The field length is 20 wherever I look and the codepage is 1252 wherever I look. Does anyone have an insight? Keep in mind, I have never used SSIS before and I consider myself an amateur with SQL Server. It could easily be a data type conflict or something easy. Any help will be appreciated.

For continuity of service and testing perposes I wish to export to flat files.
However, although the export seems to work fine, I get alot od spaces in my text file.
It seems to pad out to the exact number of characters in the data base, i.e. Char(3) outputs 1 character plus an extra 2 spaces, char(9) gives me the six characters + 3 spaces.
I cannot change the DBase.
How do I get rid of the extra spaces?

SSIS - Import Flat File

Apr 17, 2006

I have a fixed width flat file I'm trying to insert into an SQL 2005 table using SSIS -- it's a recurring task. One of the columns in the flat file has to go to a column of type Numeric. No matter what I try : a data conversion, defining the field as DT_NUMERIC in the connection,... I always get "The conversion returned status value 2 and status text :The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data". It is driving me bonkers, up to the point that I find myself wishing for the 'good old' DTS days of SQL 2000. And I dread to think what will happen when I try to port some serious, much more complex DTS packages on my SQL 2000 to SQL 2005.

The data in question represents longitudes and latitudes so quite often there is a leading white space in the data : ex. : " 95.15". Surely that cannot be the cause ?

I've spent hours doing the RTFM-thing and searching the newsgroups, fora...you name it. Apart from ending up running in circles in the MS documentation, the only thing I've really learned so far is that I'm aparently not the only one driven to dispair by the new SSIS thing.

I can think of a number of ways to hack my way around this thing, but that's not the kind of 'progress' I had in mind when I started the move to SQL 2005.

Intelligent suggestions would be most welcome.

SSIS Flat File Connection

Oct 31, 2007

Hi All,

I have a requirement wherein I have to read the data from a "|" separated flat file. Each row is specified this way...

<row>Data1|Data2|Data3</row>
<row>Data1|Data2|Data3</row>
<row>Data1|Data2|Data3</row>
<row>Data1|Data2|Data3</row>

.
.
.
.
I am specifying the row delimiter as : </row>{CR}{LF}<row>
When I create Flat File Connection and when I see the preview of columns...in the first row "<row>" remains and in the last row "</row>" remains...

I am trying hard to sort out and remove these extra string but unable to do so...

Please let me know how to approach this? How should I specify the Row Delimiter?

Thanks,

Change The Mappings In SSIS Packages

Feb 21, 2008

Hi,

My need is to load data from flat files to SQL tables. All the flat files are different. For convenience flat file name and table name is similar.
I have placed a For loop container and in which I used SCRIPT TASK to read the file names from the specified folder and i populated this value to SSIS variable. All my flat file name and destination table name are given using this Script task. For the first run it executes perfectly, but for the second run it fails. The reason is due to the flat file connection manager. The file name is changed since it is taken care by my script, but the columns are not mapped it still have the previous file's columns. I do not know how to solve this.

Please tell me if there is any other way to solve this or i need to refine my process.

Actually i have more than 100 files and so i am trying to do it at one short rather than creating individual packages.

Unable To Edit Pre-defined Flat File Connection Manager Properties In The Flat File Destination Editor

Hi,

I am testing SSIS and have created a Flat File Destination. I defined the Flat File Connection as New for the first time and it worked fine. Now, I would like to go back and modify the Flat File Connection in the Flat File Destination Editor, but it allows only to create a New connection rather allowing me to edit the existing one. For testing, I can go back and create a new connection, but if my connection had 50-100 columns then it would be an issue to re-create it from scratch.

Did someone else faced this issue?

BULK INSERT Flat File With Only One Column

Jan 30, 2004

Hi,

I have a text file with a single column that i need to bulk insert into a table with 2 colums - an ID (with identity turned on) and col2

my text file looks like:

row1
row2
row3
...
row10

so my bulk insert i have like this:
BULK INSERT test FROM 'd: estBig.txt'
WITH (
DATAFILETYPE = 'char',
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
ROWTERMINATOR = '
'
)

but i get the error:

Server: Msg 4866, Level 17, State 66, Line 1
Bulk Insert fails. Column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 1. Make sure the field terminator and row terminator are specified correctly.

However, as you can see from the text file, there is only one column, so i dont have any field terminators.

Any ideas how to make this work?

Thanks.

If there are allready Records with this date i know i allready imported that file and skip it in my For each File Container. If no records where found I want to copy them from the file to the table.

So I have a flatfile source and thoght I just make an oledb command task afterwards which looks like "Select count(*) from Import where Processdate = ?. and then a conditional split if the count == 0 or not... but i have problems getting the Count value out auf the OLD DB Command Task because everytime I try to add an outputcolumn i get the message: "An Output cannot be added to the output collection" and since there is no possibility to map an expression to the result...

I tried to workaround the problem using a lookup task.. but that seems to be the wrong way.

thanks for your help
bye

Binary Column Or Flat File Best Practices?

Jul 17, 2007

I have a design oriented question for a system I am developing. Because of various business concerns and issues we have been moving towards as desing that brings files into the SQL 2005 system as binary columns in a database. These files will then be processed at a later time using SSIS into relation model tables.

Normally I would just have the process be files are placed on a FTP location (or other drive path) and a location is stored in the database versus the storing of them as binary rows in the database. Then later the SSIS package runs using the path information for the conneciton manager.

Based on the proposed binary design I have two questions.

1. Can anyone speak to the advantages, disadvantages, issues they have had, etc to the binary storage method?

2. Can anyone make a suggestion on how they would handle the pulling of the file out of SQL when the file is ready to process? Do you stream it to a file and rebuild it on the physical disk, to then just import it with a connection manager for the flat file structure.... or can you stream it directly into a conneciton manager that reads it like a flat file and parses the file without ever going to disk? Any information on suggested implementations would be helpful.

Thanks.

Set The Flat File Column Delimiter Programatically

Jan 31, 2007

hi guys,

i am working on a project witch involves creating packages on-the-fly to import data from txt/csv/xls files according to some definitions on the database.

so far, i have been doing fine.

now we are planning the ASP.net page that enables the customer to define the input file format that will be imported to the system. we want it to have the same listBox as the FlatFileConnectionManager Editor has to define some properties, such as - column delimeiter.

the code to set the column delimiter looks like this:

SSISRunTime.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFile90 myFilecn = null;

myFilecn = (SSISRunTime.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFile90)package.Connections["InputFileConnection"].InnerObject;

DtsConvert.ToConnectionManager90(package.Connections["InputFileConnection"]);

SSISRunTime.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFileColumn90 col

col = myFilecn.Columns.Add(); //.....

string colDelimiter ="|" ; // it actually gets the data from the database... but it is the same thing

col.ColumnDelimiter = colDelimiter;

when we deal with the simple characters- "," , ";" , "|" ... we have no problems with setting the delimiter. but how can i set the delimiter to Tab? or {CR} ? {LF}?

i tried to look at the dtsx- XML , and i see that the column delimiter that is defined when i choose Tab is: _x007C_, but when i try to do something like this:

col.ColumnDelimiter = "_x007C_" ;

it doesn't work. the same happens when I try "{t}" or "Tab".

how do i solve this problem, and enable the user to select Tab as a column delimiter?

Thanks!
