Hi everyone In my SqlServer Management Studio Express, on start up it shows the server type option, but greyed. So that value is fixed to database engine. ( I'm trying to work on an SqlServer Compact Edition database through the SSMStudiothat's why I'm trying to get this to change.)Besides, after I connect i go to the Object Explorer, expand the server node, and go to Replication. When i expand replication, i get the "Local Subscription" option, but nothng for Publication.( I want to work on Merge Replication, that's why I desparately need Publication to work)Am i missing something here? I did not install SqlServer separately, I only have what comes bundled with the Visual Studio 2005 Setup.

Hello all.
I am trying to import a flat file using the Wizard. That option does not show up. It shows up fine on my other machine. I installed 2005 Standard edition and they are still missing. I then uninstalled everything, rebooted and reinstalled Standard edition.
The flat file option is still missing. Any thoughts?

Hi everyone,
I am running Win 2003 Ent. and SQL 2005 Ent. SP2.
I used Management Studio to copy a database from one server to another. It created a DTS package, which I can see when I log in to Integration Services through MS. However, when I right click on the name of the package, I don't see an export option. I am a member of the sysadmin group. Any idea why the option is not there and how to fix it? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a problem with deleting old bak files from a Cleanup Maintenance Task. I have backups in subdirectories and I read in SQL Server 2005 Books Online that:
In contrast to earlier versions of the Maintenance Cleanup task, the SQL Server 2005 version of the task does not automatically delete files in the subdirectories of the specified directory. This constraint reduces the surface area of any attack that could exploit the functionality of the Maintenance Cleanup task to delete files maliciously. To delete the first-level subfolders, you must explicitly elect to do this by checking the Include first-level subfolders option in the Maintenance Cleanup Task dialog box.
I cannot find such an option in my Maintenance Cleanup Task dialog box. I do not think I installed any service packs yet, could this be the problem?

I was hoping this would be fixed in SP1, but it is still missing. Particularly in a development environment, I find it very useful to have scripts DROP first, then do a CREATE for tables. There is an option called Script Behavior that is supposed to allow this, according to the help text. There are supposed to be 3 options, DROP only, CREATE only and DROP + CREATE. This third option (the one I need) is missing. It does not show up on the drop down.
Sorry, I don't want to be rude, but before anyone suggests it, yes, I know I can create a DROP script first and then go back in and create a CREATE script and then run both. And I don't want to change my methodology, and I don't want to do twice the work. All I would like to know is if anyone knows how to get this 3rd option to appear, or if its a known bug, is there a hotfix or a plan to fix it soon.
Thanks,
Wayne

Hi,
I just installed SQL Server 2005 Express. I would like to import tables from
another DB, and I read in the help files that I just need to (1) right-click on
a non-system database in Management Studio Express, and (2) select Import/Export
under the Tasks menu.
I tried this, but my Tasks menu only contains these options: Detach, Shrink,
Backup, Restore, Generate Scripts.
I googled for "sql server 2005 "no import" tasks", and it appears that a
couple of people have had this problem -- the only solution I read was to
install the "Workstation Components," but I already have, and still no luck.
Any idea what I need to do? Thanks!

The drop down Tools menu has only three items, External Tools ....., Customize ..., and Options ... (I have the client Sql Server Enterprise Manager on this machine to connect to Sql Server 2000 on another server.)

I'm new to SSIS, and trying to automate data imports from text files. The text files I'm importing always contain a fixed set of columns, or a subset of those columns. If I include a subset of columns in the import file (and exclude others), the data doesn't import...I assume because the actual file doesn't include every column defined in the flat file source object?
Is it possible to accomplish this without dynamically selecting the columns, as indicated here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms136020.aspx

After some weeks evaluating tools and platforms for developing an application, I decided to move to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Everything was fine till last night, when after creating my tables, I needed to populate them. I tried to find the Import and Export Data Wizard that SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 used to have, but great was my surprise when I found - in this forum - a post that said that it's not available in the Express Edition.
I'll have to move back in time (what I hate) to remember the way BCP worked. Can somebody post some examples to not start from zero ? Does anybody know a third party visual tool that can import/export data from text files to a SQL Server DB via ODBC ?
What's the reason it was not included in the EE ?
THanks !

Hi,
I have enabled logging in my package and am using sql table to capture. i have defined a connection for it and i have defined it in the logging option. Once the logging is enabled, using package configurations, i am storing the value for the property "logging mode= 1", which means enabled in the table. But when i close and reopen the package, the package is failing to enable the logging. Even though i have stored the logging mode value in the configurations table, it is not getting enabled. Please help me solve this.
Workaround i have tried is declaring a variable explicitly to store the logging mode value and use it in the expressions of the pkg to define the logging mode. This variable is saved in the configuration table. This way works. but i want to know why it is not working with loggingmode value reading directly from configuration entries.

Our SSIS packages use the Web Service Task to call services to send email and write package failure data to a department wide database. These Web Service Calls are failing with HTTP 401 errors. It was caused by the passwords for the HTTP connections not being saved when the SSIS pkgs were saved to .dtsx files. I have tried saving the package with a password and the EncryptSensitiveWithPassword protection option. This password can be supplied when the package is called from another package or a package is executed in Visual Studio but cannot be supplied to DTexec to execute the package in a job. DTexec does have a /Password parameter but it is rejected if the package is loaded from a .dtsx file.
This appears to be a bug in DTexec. It only accepts the /Password parameter when the package is loaded with the /SQL option. Specifying /Password and /File is not supported.
Is this a known bug? Are there any workarounds?
Has anyone successfully called a Web Service from SSIS executed via DTexec?

This is more of a philosophical post, but feedbacks are welcome!
I am working at migrating SQL 2000 DTS packages that pulls data from MAS90 via ODBC connections.
At first, I REALLY tried to learn SSIS and I hated it at first, with all the new things one has to do to get a simple import to work. After a while, I begin to appreciate some of the new design and the more tiered approach. Indeed, I tried to use SSIS to import the tables and even learned how to overcome the Unicode/non-Unicode conversion errors by using the Import Wizard to do the grunt work.
But today I came across a show stopper: My imports are failing because the source lied about its metadata type and I am getting a "Value too large for output column" error. I tried to recreate the Task to no avail. I searched on the web and there are very few posts regarding to this and unfortunately I don't have a way to tweak my ODBC connection properties for MAS90 to some how "fool" SSIS. I finally give up and migrate the DTS 2000 package instead.
I am not too happy about this solution because I know that more likely or not Microsoft will discontinue support for such legacy approach and then it is more work down the road. I REALLY wanted to do it right, to rebuild it natively in SSIS but why does SSIS have to make things so hard by enforcing the type checks so tightly? Is it so bad to allow users who know the data better to by pass the validations? We are not working in a perfect Comp Sci 101 world where every thing is scrubbed clean, we work in a world of bad, old, malformed data.
If there is a way for me to overcome that "value too large" error, I am all ears.
Thank you for reading.

I am attempting to import data into SQL 2005 (using the Tasks->Import Data wizard) and get as far as selecting a datasource. My source is ODBC and I am selecting ".NET Framework Data Provider for Odbc" but then get stuck on the connection string... I am attempting to import from 'Relativity Client' which as far as I can tell is an interface to a Cobol database, I have also had this problem importing from FoxPro - how do I come up with a connection string?
I have also tried to create a DTSX package, created the connection to the odbc source, tested ok, then when selecting the connection as a source (datareader source) I get the message 'Cannot acquire a managed connection from the run-time connection manager'...
I have also created a DTS package in SQL2000, upgraded to a 2005 package, this creates a file which after opening cannot be saved 'System.OutOfMemoryException', on my laptop with 2gig physical ram (1.3gig in use), 8gig virtual memory...
This is getting just a little frustrating as the SQL 2000 wizard fetches the data straight in from any data source I have ever tried with no complication whatsoever...
Unfortunately the first training course I can get on is in the middle of January. But I would prefer not to have to install SQL2000 and SQL2005 (SQL2000 for DTS, SQL2005 for reporting) just to get a few reports up and running.
What do I need to do to make SSIS import ODBC data? Or if someone can direct me to a good source (preferably with examples) of how to get SSIS working it would be greatly appreciated.

We have an SSIS package which runs regularly throughout the day, on 15 minute intervals. This package is moving data between two SQL Server instances, performing some simple identity mapping along the way. The primary source table is large, and we want to move only those records which have changed since the last time the package ran, so we use VersionDatestamps in the table, and pick up the dataset to be transferred by using the pacakge execution time, and the (previously recorded by the package) last-run time.
The problem we are having, is that the initial dataset picked up by SSIS is often missing records. The missing records are clearly within the time window that the package queried for, though they are near the boundary (within a minute, of the boundary, but as much as 30 seconds away) and typically all have an identical version datestamp to each other, within a single execution of the package.
At first, we thought this was an issue with date precision, but we've both truncated the dates, and even expanded the time window, and we still experience the same phenomenon.
The stored procedure which is responsible for updating the records in question, runs as a previous step to the SSIS package, within a single SQL Server Agent Job.
Has anyone experienced anything similar, or have some recommendation on how to track the source of this down?

On Visual Studio 2013 with SSDT for SQL Server 2014
I noticed something very strange.
I am viewing the package configuration selected option for a package:
Now, i just click on the - sign and then on the plus sign on the "Properties" branch. And the option is cleared:
The ONLY way i found not to mess everything is just to have ALL the options FULL expanded and THEN to select what i want.

BTW! Is there a way to try communication with the OLEDB provider from the commandprompt?

So when a SSIS package fails due to missing file the remaining steps in the SQL scheduler won't execute. I want to handle the missing source file condition grace fully. Please advise.

Hello All,
I have a package in which I have enabled "Package Configuration".
When I run the package i am sure that it reads the configuration file and executes the package correctly.
However if I remove the configuration file, the package still executes correctly with the settings which were used at the time of development.
I have event handlers for OnError and OnWarning and both these are NOT invoked.
IMO, this is incorrect behavior because if a package has been configured for "package configuration, then we should atleast have a warning generated that SSIS did not find the configuration and it would execute the package with hard coded values (from the time of development).
Is there any work around for this? how can I make SSIS warn me if the config file is missing for a package which was configured for package configuration?
