SSIS - Importing Varchar From Access Into SQL2005 As Varchar

Nov 20, 2006

For the life of me I cannot figure out why SSIS will not convert varchar data. instead of using the table to table method, I wrote a SQL query so that I could transform the datatype ntext to varchar 512 understanding that natively MS is going towards all Unicode applications.

The source fields from Access are int, int, int and varchar(512). The same is true of the destination within SQL Server 2005. the field 'Answer' is the varchar field in question....

I get the following error

Validating (Error)

DTS used to be a very strong tool but a simple import such as this is causing me extreme grief and wondering of SQL2005 is ready for primetime. FYI SP1 is installed. I am running this from a workstation and not on the server if that makes a difference...

Any help would be appreciated.

Problems Moving Data Over 8000k In DB2 Varchar Column Into SQL Server Varchar(max) Using SSIS

Nov 20, 2007

I have looked far and wide and have not found anything that works to allow me to resolve this issue.

I am moving data from DB2 using the MS OLEDB Provider for DB2. The OLEDB source sees the column of data as DT_TEXT. I setup a destination to SQL Server 2005 and everything looks good until I try and run the package.

I get the error:
[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E21. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft DB2 OLE DB Provider" Hresult: 0x80040E21 Description: "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.".

[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: Failed to retrieve long data for column "LIST_DATA_RCVD".

[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: There was an error with output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324) on output "OLE DB Source Output" (287). The column status returned was: "DBSTATUS_UNAVAILABLE".

[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: The "output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324)" failed because error code 0xC0209071 occurred, and the error row disposition on "output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.

[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The PrimeOutput method on component "OLE DB Source" (277) returned error code 0xC0209029. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.

Any suggestions on how I can get the large string data in the varchar column in DB2 into the varchar(max) column in SQL Server 2005?

The Data Types Varchar And Varchar Are Incompatible In The Modulo Operator

Code Block

ELSE
SELECT * FROM [Outlook]

Datatype Question Varchar(max), Varchar(250), Or Char(250)

Oct 18, 2007

I have a table that contains a lot of demographic information. The data is usually small (<20 chars) but ocassionally needs to handle large values (250 chars). Right now its set up for varchar(max) and I don't think I want to do this.

How does varchar(max) store info differently from varchar(250)? Either way doesn't it have to hold the container information? So the word "Crackers" have 8 characters to it and information sayings its 8 characters long in both cases. This meaning its taking up same amount of space?

Also my concern will be running queries off of it, does a varchar(max) choke up queries because the fields cannot be properly analyzed? Is varchar(250) any better?

Should I just go with char(250) and watch my db size explode?

Usually the data that is 250 characters contain a lot of blank space that is removed using a SPROC so its not usually 250 characters for long.

Any insight to this would be appreciated.

Importing Pervasive SQL Into SQL2005 Via SSIS

Aug 28, 2006

In SQL 2000, I had a working DTS package that would import a Pervasive SQL database into SQL 2000 (There is a good reason, provided on request). The column type definitions came over just fine in SQL 2000 with a few minor changes.

In SQL 2005 (SSIS), i create a Data Source via the Connection Manager (Provider: .Net ProvidersOdbc Data Provider) to the Pervasive database (System DSN, <database_odbc>). I then create a Data Destination via the Connection Manager (Provider: Native OLE DBSQL Native Client) to the SQL database. Both databases reside on the same machine.

I've created a DataSource Reader and used the sql command, "select * from ARCustomer" as an example. The issue is with "data types" for the columns. They don't come close to resembling the results that i had in SQL 2000 DTS.

Is there another method or parameter setting that will preserve the "data types" for the columns being imported from the Pervasive database.

This has been a real stumbling block and any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your assistance ... Bernie

Memo Field Da Access Into Varchar SQL Server

Oct 2, 2007

I'm having some problems importing data from a memo column (Access) into varchar column in SQL Server.

My idea was to use slowly changing dimesion to identify modified and new rows. No matter what data type I use to convert the memo column (using Data Conversion Transformation) and then using the converted column in SCD, I get the following error :
'The SCD transform does not allow mapping between columns of different types except for DT_STR and DT_WSTR.'

What do I have to do to get Memo column 'to behave' as a string?

Same problem with a different data type - decimal (18,5) in sql server - no matter what datatype I use in Data Conversion Trans, I get the same error trying to generate scd.

Thank you for your answers.

Varchar(max) Equivalent In SSIS

Apr 4, 2007

Hi All,

I have a column in my table that is of varchar(max) datatype, when I try selecting the same using a ExecuteSQLtask and assign it to a variable of String datatype, its failing with the error,

[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "Select [Path] from PARAMETERS where [Name] = 'List File'" failed with the following error: "The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::list_file_path" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object. ". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

What is the equivalent datatype, is String not good enough? Is there something I am missing out here ?If someone has gone through this and figured out a solution please help....

SSIS: Varchar(max) Or Nvarchar(max) Help

Apr 11, 2006

Please I know this is fustrating but I really need help with this issue:

I am getting data conversion error when I tried to load data from one SQl table to another SQL table using SSIS.

The source table has a column with data type nvarchar(max). Also the destination table has the same data type nvarchar(max) but I keep getting conversion error when I use SCD transformation.

Error: " Input column "des" (116) has a long object data type of DT_TEXT, DT_NTEXT or DT_IMAGE which is not supported"

I am fine when I use OLEDB destination but I want to do an incremental load.

Is there a quick fix for this?

Thanks

Difference VarChar(50) And VarChar(500)

Nov 26, 2007

Hey,

I was doing some research on how SQL stores data on disk.
MSDN states that when storring a varchar, only the length of the data itself is used plus two bytes.
So, if you store "car" in a VarChar(50) it will take 5 bytes.
But when you store "car" in a VarChar(500) it will also take 5 bytes.

What is the reason users should define the parameter lenght?
Can you use VarChar(8000) whole the time, without any drawback?

Thanks

SSIS Import Of CSV Don't Recognize NULL Values For VARCHAR Fields

Sep 4, 2007

Hi, i'm new to SSIS and trying to import some csv files (comma delimited) into SQL Server. A NULL value for a CHAR column is correctly regonized as NULl in SQL Server, but a NULL value for of a mapping to a VARCHAR column in SQL Server is not recognized correctly and i get the value "'NULL'" in SQL Server (including the single comma.

Sample:

CSV file contains columns A and B. A and B contains the Text NULL.
Column A is mapped to a CHAR field, and column B is mapped to a VARCHAR field in SQL Server.
After the import, SQL has the following value: A = NULL as NULL, B 'NULL' as text.

did anyone else had this problem?

thanks so much for any help.

Problem Importing Text Files With Binary Zeros (0x00) Via SSIS(SQL2005). It Is All Fine When Using DTS(SQL2000) Though.

Apr 24, 2008

Hi.

There is a "text" file generated by mainframe and it has to be uploaded to SQL Server. I've reproduced the situation with smaller sample. Let the file look like following:
A17 123.17 first row
BB29 493.19 second
ZZ3 18947.1 third row is longer
And in hex format:
00: 41 31 37 20 20 20 20 20  31 32 33 2E 31 37 20 20 A17 123.17
10: 66 69 72 73 74 20 72 6F  77 0D 0A 42 42 32 39 20 first rowBB29
20: 20 00 20 34 39 33 2E 31  39 20 20 73 65 63 6F 6E 493.19 secon
30: 64 0D 0A 5A 5A 33 20 20  20 20 20 31 38 39 34 37 dZZ3 18947
40: 2E 31 20 74 68 69 72 64  20 72 6F 77 00 69 73 20 .1 third row is
50: 6C 6F 6E 67 65 72  longer

I wrote "text" in quotes because sctrictly it is not pure text file - non-text binary zeros (0x00) happen sometimes instead of spaces (0x20).

The table is:

CREATE TABLE eng (

src varchar (512)

)

When i upload this file into SQL2000 using DTS or Import wizard, the table contains:

select src, substring(src,9,8), len(src) from eng
< src ><substr> <len>
A17 123.17 first row 123.17 25
BB29 493.19 22
ZZ3 18947.1 third row 18947.1 35

As one can see, everything was imported, including binary zeros. And though SELECT * in SSMS truncates strings upon reaching 0x00's, still all information is stored in tables - SUBSTRINGs show that.

When i upload this file into SQL2005 using SSIS or Import wizard the result is following:
< src ><substr> <len>
A17 123.17 first row 123.17 25
BB29 4
ZZ3 18947.1 third row 18947.1 25

This time table is half-empty - all characters behind binary zeros in respective rows are lost.

I stumbled upon this problem while migrating my DTSes to SSIS packages. Do you think there is some workaround, or i need to turn on some checkbox or smth else could help? Please...

Integration Services :: Convert Field Of VARCHAR To INT Datatype In SSIS 2014?

Nov 17, 2015

I'm trying to convert a column in my source table of datatype varchar(6) to a column of datatype int in my destination. I tried using the Derived Column/Data Conversion transformations but none of them worked. So, I tried using the following C# (credits to the original poster) and getting an error during compilation.

Note: "MyCol" is the Input Column I've specified in the Script Component and "CleanCol" is the Output column I've specified as datatype [DT_I4].

public override void Input0_ProcessInputRow(Input0Buffer Row)
{
int colOut = 0;
if (!Int32.TryParse(Row.MyCol, out colOut))
{
Row.CleanCol_IsNull = true;
} else {
Row.CleanCol = colOut;
}
}

The best overloaded method match for 'int.TryParse(string, out int)' has some invalid arguments

The other expression I've tried was:

ISNULL(MyCol) ? (dt_i4)"" : (dt_i4)MyCol

From the above code, you might have understood that the source field has some blank records as well in the MyCol field.

What is the best possible way to do the conversion from a String to Int or fixing the error from the above.

SQL2005 && Importing XML Data

Sep 11, 2006

I understand that SQL 2005 now supports XML documents. I have a rather large file that is in XML format that I need to get into a table in SQL2005. I have tried the import wizard to no avail. I even tried to use DTS packages in SQL 2000 and still no luck.

Does anyone know of an article or information I can obtain on how to import data from and XML file to a SQL 2005 Table?

Here is a basic idea of the data as it is shown on the first row of the XML file.

Code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><SheetName Version="1.0" Date="2006-09-10">
<SheetNameLine>
<action>A</action>
<Id>1</Id>
<Code>ACCOMPS</Code>
<AddData></AddData>
<DataIssue></DataIssue>
<Type>DATA HERE</Type>
<Serial>123546789</Serial>
<Date>DATA HERE</Date>
<Updated>DATA HERE</Updated>
<Info>DATA HERE</Info>
<AColumn></AColumn>
<BColumn></BColumn>
<CColumn></CColumn>
<DColumn></DColumn>
</SheetNameLine>

This particular file is way too large to import into Excel and then into SQL, so I need to find an alternative way.

Any ideas? Help?

Thanks in advance.............

Varchar(max)!

Aug 6, 2007

I've only just discovered this! Shame on me.
So this is the future? 268 thousand times more space without the headache of text columns (and not being able to use them as parameter types for long csv's) are finally a thing of the past? Could it be? http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=66929

I only discovered it because I ran into a problem trying to create a trigger and so then I learnt that:
"SQL Server 2005 does not allow for text, ntext, or image column references in the inserted and deleted tables for AFTER triggers. However, these data types are included for backward compatibility purposes only. The preferred storage for large data is to use the varchar(max), nvarchar(max), and varbinary(max) data types. Both AFTER and INSTEAD OF triggers support varchar(max), nvarchar(max), and varbinary(max) data in the inserted and deleted tables."
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191300.aspx

Has anyone experienced any problems converting over from text to varchar(max)?
