SSIS Losing Password
Feb 18, 2008
Hi, i am having a problem when i tried to execute a SSIS package from a job in sql server 2005
First of all, when i create a new connection in the designer, i complete with server, user and password, and test connecion succesfull.
Then, i execute all the package and it works fine.
After building it, i tried tu execute the package using the file that it ve just been created into bin folder, but the connecttions didnt have the tag password, so after user id i add ;password=xxxx in every connection and it works fine. But every time i wantex to execute, i have to write the password.
Also i tried openeing the text file that the DTS created, but when i open it again, the password wasnt there.
Finally, i tried to create a job that execute this file, and i have to write the password as i did when i execute directly from the file, but i couldnt run. It has an authentication problem. If i open again the step configuracion, the password is not there.
The same that happen every time, but now i can run the package
Any idea?
Thanks a lot

I have written a simple SQL Server 2005 package to pull some data from Oracle (using ODBC) and pumping it into SQL Server. When I run it from the server in debug mode in VS it works fine. When I schedule the job it errors out with "ora-01005: null password given; logon denied." The password is there. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a security setting somewhere preventing me from saving passwords? Is there a work around? Thanks.

I'm having an issue with an SSIS package. It supposed to run on a schedule and pull data from one server (SQL1) to another (SQL2). Unfortunately, I'm using a shared server and I'm not that admin. So I'm limited to what I can try. According to the admin, my package is not retaining the password when I build it. It runs fine in debug mode on my machine, but will not run on his. I found this link...
http://vyaskn.tripod.com/sql_server_2005_making_ssis_packages_portable.htm
... and tried it. It describes how to create an XML for validation. Still no good. He sent a screenshot indicating error code: DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTION and OLE DB Source failed validation. In effect, login failed for SQL1 and it could not pull data.
How do I get the package to retain login data?
thanks!

I have a simple package that I created. it gets information from an excel file using the excel connection and then imports it into a sql2005 table using the ole db connection. the job runs fine in the BI environment. and it will run fine once I've imported it to the server. However when I go to run it as a job step using the line
dtexec /Ser Name /U User /P xxxxx /SQ "SalesSuccess"
it errors out with the following error.
Failed to decrypt protected XML node "DTS:Password" with error 0x8009000B "Key not valid for use in specified state.". You may not be authorized to access this information. This error occurs when there is a cryptographic error. Verify that the correct key is available.
now i've tried a couple of things with the protection level ie
ServerStorage, EncryptSensitiveWithPassword, EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey
and none of these seem to work correctly. I'm at a loss as to what to do and any help would be greatly apprieciated

stupid question time...
how do i add a password (ie, what is the exact wording) to the CommandLine in a SQL Agent Job that is running an SSIS package from the File System, pls?
Here is the CommandLine as I currently have it:
/FILE "\dbase01c$SSISPackageDeployment vrscanus_process_uploadscanus_process_upload.dtsx" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING E
I have tried /PWD and /pwd and /PASSWORD already. For these, SQL Job says they are not valid commandLine parameters.

Hi..
Isn't this a bug?
Step 1) Create a package with ProtectionLevel = EncryptAllwithPassword or EncryptSensitivewithPassword, and set password in package.
Step2) In SQL Server Agent, Create a Job to call a package.
Step 3) IN SQL Server Agent, Scripting Job. In script, package password shows up...

I have a simple solution with (right now) 4 packages, 3 configuration files and one "global" datasource. Here is the View Code on the data source:<DataSource xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dwd="http://schemas.microsoft.com/DataWarehouse/Designer/1.0" xsi:type="RelationalDataSource" dwd:design-time-name="02d8345e-665e-4bd8-9323-1e846af220e5" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine"> <ID>PPDM37 Staging</ID> <Name>PPDM37 Staging</Name> <CreatedTimestamp>0001-01-01T07:00:00Z</CreatedTimestamp> <LastSchemaUpdate>0001-01-01T07:00:00Z</LastSchemaUpdate> <ConnectionString>Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Data Source=engsql03.dev.ihs.com;Persist Security Info=True;Password=;User ID=;Initial Catalog=PPDM37_Staging</ConnectionString> <ConnectionStringSecurity>PasswordRemoved</ConnectionStringSecurity> <Timeout>PT0S</Timeout></DataSource>As you can see, the <ConnectionStringSecurity> node is set with PasswordRemoved. When editing the data source and checking the Keep Password option on it still saves with PasswordRemoved! I've even gone in and hand edited the above XML. The next time I view the XML it is set back to PasswordRemoved. How the heck do I keep the password with the connection string? I am pushing the connection string out to a global config file and it does not save the password there either. Extremely frustrating as it is causing us to hard code the password inside our packages which means it is no longer able to move from one server to the next without touching every single package.Suggestions? Is there a setting somewhere in SSIS that is doing this?

In my project source is Oracle and I am using ODBC to connect oracle for lading.I have create 2 project parameter for connection string one for connection and another for password..when I am making expression on ODBC connection it is showing error like below I can't establish a connection because our legacy driver doesn't support 'Password' as a connection string attribute.
when I am passing expression like
@[$Package::V_Constring]+ "PWD=faster1" on odbc connection it working fine.
When I use just the ConnectionString property on the ODBC connection manager and use a 'pwd' attribute; all is well. E.g., "uid=<user>;pwd=<password>;Dsn=<dsn name>;". But as soon as I
flip the sensitive attribute, I'm getting the classic error:
The expression will not be evaluated because it contains sensitive parameter variable..The sensitive parameter is desired, of course. I don't want the password in the clear.

I have created a FTP task in SSISÂ to upload file to the server. Due to some policy issues we do not have the actual password with us. we have been provided with a encrypted password. Hence I am not able to connect to the server through the FTP task connection manager. Is there a way to connect to the server and send file using the encrypted password, so that we don't require the actual password to run the process successfully?

I create a connection to an OLE db source and use SQL Server authorization and save the password, the connection manager seems to "forget" the password. That is, when I click the 'save password' check box, and do a test connection, it connects fine. But as soon as I close that connection window, and reopen it, the password box is empty, and the 'save password' box is still checked.Â
While using the connection manager name in the SSIS component (say script task) the connection is failing . As a workaround, the whole connection string has been put in a variable and used that variable in the SCRIPT task.
Is it a bug or some other property need to be set to use ConnectionManager Name .

Hi there,
Something a little wride mysterious is happening with my package when I deploy it to run at the SSIS server instance. Everytime that I try to deploy it (from my local development environment) to SSIS server, my package is not keeping its database user and password.
As the database user and password are the same one we dont need to use the XML setting to keep these data there.
So, does anyone know what could be happening with my package and/or my deployment?
Thank you,

I'm having a problem with saving a password in a SSIS package that is accessing an Oracle database as an external data source. Â I experienced the problem that many people have had with the SSIS package not saving the Oracle password as expected. Â I successfully saved the Oracle datasource password (Password #1) using the "Encrypt sensitive with password" security setting and then setting a separate/new password (Password #2) for the SSIS package. Â I've imported this package into my Integration Services installation, and I can get it to run successfully by manually entering Password #2 when I open the package.
Now I want to pull the SSIS package into a SQL Job Agent, along with some other steps, to run on an automatic schedule. Â My question -- how/where do I embed Password #2 (the one for the SSIS package) in the settings for the SQL Job Agent step that I use to run the SSIS package? Â The SQL Job Agent step settings box prompts me for Password #2 before it will let me edit settings for the package, but it doesn't save that password. Â So when I actually run the whole job, the SSIS package always fails.

Hello,
I need to run SSIS packages with the 32 bit dtexec version, and I am storing these files into the MSDB package store, in SQL Server 2005. I have chosen to encrypt sensitive data with password, and then to execute the packages with xp_cmdshell.
The problem is that I receive the following message when I try to run it from management studio (when running this, I am logged in with the sa user): exec master..xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /Ser ServerName /SQL "TestFolderPackage" /De "testPass"'
€œMicrosoft (R) SQL Server Execute Package Utility

End Error€?
If I run the same package with the same command specified above, but without sensitive data in it (a simpler version with no passwords and connection strings, it works fine)
exec master..xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /Ser ServerName /SQL "TestFolderPackage"'
If I run the firs package version (with sensitive data and password protected) from the command line, everything works well:
DTExec.exe /ServerName OLAP /SQL "TestFolderPackage" /De "testPass"
I know in ASP.NET when encrypting web.config section, the system stores the decryption keys in a app data folder, and in order to be able to read from the encrypted web.config, the user under which runs the ASP.NET must be granted access to that folder, by running asp_regiis.exe with some parameters. I believe here a have a similar problem, with users not being granted access to encryption keys.
Thanks in advance

I'm learning SSIS, and just started to use SSIS Package Configurations. I want to be able to switch between a dev and prod instance of our database.
I did not specify the password in the Configuration file (XML), figuring it would get it from the package itself. (That will be the same between dev and prod). But once I set up to use the Configuration, I started to get a "Login failed..." message. I added the password to the configuration, and it's the same. I quit using the configuration file at all, and then it works again.
This may be related, but when I show the properties on my connection, it shows stars for the password. When I go to the editor, the password field is blank, and if I test the connection, it fails. I type in the password, and then the connection works. I have the "Save my password" checked, but every time I go back, the password is blank. In fact, if I type in the password for the connection in the editor, and then go to the "All" page, the password is blank. It may be a red herring, but it sure looks like it's not really storing the password, and thus the Configuration file can't connect when it tries to get it. I can type in the password, test the connection (it works), close the editor dialog, open the editor dialog, test the connection again, and since the password is now blank, the connection fails.
What do I have to do to make that password actually stick!?
Without the Configuration file, when I save the package to SQLServer, it will run as a job, in spite of the password appearing to not stick. With the configuration file, it's not even running while still in Studio.
Here are at least some of the version information, which may or may not be useful.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005

Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727

Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services Designer
Version 9.00.3042.00

After designing a SSIS package in Visual Studio 2005 that had two connection manager defined to keep the password. After I deployed the package to a file system. I then Imported the .dtsx file after making a Integration Services connection in Sql Server Management Studio. When I tried to run the package it failed when it tried to make the connection. When I edited the connection manager connection string and added the password and the package ran fine but it does not retain the password!. I need to have this package scheduled to run daily so I need to know how to have the package keep the password in the connection string. I have seen other posts on this issue but not seen a good solution. Could someone point me to the proper MSDN article that would explain how to implement this ? Is it a SQL Server configuration issue or a property in Visual Studio SSIS design time ?
thanks.

Hi,
After I had transfered SSIS package to another PC I tried to open package and I got an error. ".. Failed to decrypt protected XML node "PackagePassword" with error . ".
It turned out, that the password wasn't saved in a OLEDB connection manager of the Package. However "save password" options checked!
But password field was empty.
As soos as I enter password the package executes successfully.
Question: How can I transfer a password for OLEDB Connection within a SSIS package to another developer's VS2005?

I have a package protected by a password - I am already unhappy that to get it to use the configuration file to change connection strings for the production servers I have had to hardcode the password into the config file - very insecure!
However, the package now deploys correctly to the production server and will run from there OK, but NOT if scheduled as a SQL Server Agent Job. Thus is because however often I edit the command line to include the password after the DECRYPT switch (which it has prompted me for when I click on the command line tab), the Job Step will not retain it.
If I open it up after I have edited it and closed it, the password has disappeared.
I know that if I run dtexec plus the code in the Command Line tab (with the password), the package runs OK.
This is driving me insane!
I have read all the other posts and so I tried replacing the SSIS package step with a CmdExec step and pasting that code into there - then I get an OLEDB error..
The code I use is:
DTEXEC /SQL "ImportRateMonitoringTables" /SERVER servername /DECRYPT password /CONFIGFILE "D:Microsoft SQL ServerSSISDeploymentsRateMonitoringImportTasksDeploymentImportRateMonitoringTables_Production.dtsConfig" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING E
and I get
SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x8000FFFF
although the same code executes perfectly from a command prompt.
Please does anyone have any experience with a similar problem and if so, how did you get round it?
Thank you

I am receiving the following error message when attempting to create a new SQL Authenticated login id.
Password validation failed. The password does not meet the requirements of the password filter DLL. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15119)
I have four servers all running SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows 2003 Ent. SP1. Of the four servers, only one received the above error message using the same TSQL below.
CREATE LOGIN TEST_LOGIN WITH PASSWORD = 'pvif9dal' MUST_CHANGE, CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON
All four servers are in the same domain, which if I understand correctly, the password policies are therefore inherited at the OS level by the domain. The password being used is within the password policies of the domain.
Any ideas as to a root cause?

We're using SQL Server 7 with an Access 2000 MDB as a front end with ODBClinked tables. I recently created a new set of tables for the app, and usersare complaining that unsaved data is being lost when they move to a newrecord. This seems to be the case when there are multiple users. When thereis a single user using it, we don't seem to have that problem. It seems that we had this problem when we first converted from an MDB backend to a SQL 7 back end, years ago, but we haven't had this problem in awhile. These are the first "entirely new" tables created in several years, and we seem to be having that problem again. Is this something with SQL 7 when it's dealing with new tables? Any ideas onwhat to do?Thanks!Neil

Following on from some problems I have been having with flat files, I seem to be stumbling from one issue to another.
I have coded my text file with some very contrived delimiters to ensure that my real data isn't tripping up the package. I am stripping all line break chars, tabs etc.
Now I seem to get all rows imported, but numerous integer columns within the file are being set to zero.
When I toggle the Keep Null options in the data flow task it will either import the row, but with the zeros, or not import the row at all. I have opened the file in text editors, and Excel and it all seems fine - in fact the same source file works OK with DTS/2000.
At a guess it seems as though these columns are seen as null by the package and so with the option switched on it defaults to zero - but they are most certainly not null in the file!! The table is a staging tabe and so is very basic in structure (no defaults or constraints)
SSIS seems a bit buggy or at the very least over sensitive to me - I am at the point of abandonment of it!!
Please has anyone seen similar issues?
