I had to use use ssis 2005 in a short project recently & had little
time to work it out. I was importing a whole bunch of flat files into
SQL Server tables with many derived columns and transformations in
between.
It seems to automatically map columns from the flat file to columns in
the sql table where the names of the columns are equal. But can it
also do it automatically on position, so flat file column 1 goes to
sql table colum 1, etc, etc? In each flat file I had to manually click
and drag the columns across to map them which took a very long time as
there were hundreds of columns in some tables!
i am sure this question must have been anwsered some where, but after a lot of searching i still have not find the anwser.
i have flat files without column headers (267 columns in total). since i have the file's description i have created a table to house these extracts with the columns in the same order as in the flat files. additionally, i have an excel containing a list of the column names their data types and length as well as their position on the flat files. in the old, DTS would map the columns without headers to those columns in the destination table using their order, in which case it works like a breeze for me. but i can not find a way of doing that in SSIS.
i would very much appreciate someone's assistance on this one since i am sure that there must be a better way than manually (and tediously & error prone) to map all those columns.
The only way to add a new column to an existing mapping that I know is to go to advanced editor and refresh. This however keeps only the default mapping (where the field names match), the rest is wiped out, so need to restore the mapping manually after that. Risky and annoying at the same time. Is there any alternative?
I want to load flat files into a single table. But the flat files can have variable number of columns upto a maximum of 10 columns. The table in my database has 10 columns in it. So in case if I load a flat file having 6 columns then rest of the columns in the table will have nulls. I don't want to use script task for this as I am not good in writing C#code.
I have a small problem in parameter mapping for Execute SQL Task. I am using a delete statement with 2 conditions. Followed by another Execute SQL Task which contains commit statement.
delete from tname where c1 = ? and c2 =?
where c1 is number(4) datatype and c2 is of varchar2(20) datatype in oracle.
The connection manager i am using is ORacle OLE DB provider. I am passing 2 global variables i.e g_v1 of Int32 and g_v2 of String Type.
In the parameter mapping of the Executing SQL task, i am mapping these 2 variables for c1 and c2 and changed the datatypes inside parameter mapping as Numeric for c1 and Varchar for c2.
I also set the property as ByPassPrepare = True.
When i am executing the package i getting INVALID NUMBER ERROR. i believe the SSIS is unable to perform the implict datatype converison.
For the next run, i changed the g_v1 varible datatype to Double and also i changed the parameter mapping for c1 as Doble datatype. This time it is working fine. I can see the Green signal for the 2 SQL Tasks.
But when i connected to Oracle check the count in the table, the data is not getting deleted.
Also, I set the property RetainSameConnection = TRUE for oracle connection manager. I am not able to trace this logical error.
The same is working fine in my local machine. But i am facing the problem when i deployed the same on the client machine.
Is there any problem with parameter mapping? What should be equialent Datatype for Oracle NUMBER datatype that should be used inside the SSIS package while declaring the global variable and inside the parameter mapping.
I have an issue with an SSIS package I was hoping to get some commentary on.
I am taking a flat file, scrubbing it in SSIS, and exporting it into a different package.
The files are fixed width. Both Fixed Width, and Ragged Right settings are not working, I've tried both.
My current config on the flat file connection is set to use the file name as variable. The format is "Ragged Right". The Text Qualifier is "<none>". The Header row and Header rows to skip are <CR><LF> and 0. The column names in first row are not checked.
In the advanced tab, 43 columns are defined. The output and input have all been verified numerous times to conform to the file spec.
When previewing the file in preview, only one record shows up even though the file contains multiple.
What it's doing is the last column contains the CR and LF characters and then it continues putting the other rows in that column (it is ignoring the CR LF and not going to the next row)
WHen I click on "Columns" in the flat file connector, it displays the rows of information as it should. When I click back down to preview a second time, the rows are displayed as they should.
The initial time you preview, the rows are jacked up and all smashed onto the first row. WHen trying to execute the package, I get a truncation error because the last column is supposed to be 7 in length, and contains multiple data rows in it.
When trying the option "Fixed Width" it does the same thing. It ignores the CR LF and makes everything one row.
Can someone please explain what it is I'm doing wrong? Or why when I click to preview the first time it is broken, but when clicking on columns and then back to Preview it is fixed?
I have to import flat files with headers and footers. I found how not to import headers but still have issues with footers. Is there a quick way to do that?
I am trying to compare two flat files and extract new entry into new file. But in my case there is no key column in both flat files. is any way to find the new entry by checksum with out Key matching?.
I´m using the Flat File Connection Manager to access a flat file, tab delimited. The flat file has 200 columns, and when I'm editing the columns, I only preview columns from 0 to 97.
Does the flat file connection have a column number limit? How could I increase it?
I'm just learning SSIS. As I was following the tutorial on foreach loop container (lesson 2) to export multiple flat files in creating a simple ETL package in SSIS, I get the following error:

This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors. SSIS package "Take17.dtsx" finished: Failure.
I spent some time in understanding where could be the error. I traced it to the following place. If you take a look at the Lesson#2 in creating a simple ETL package in SSIS, using foreach loop container to import files into SQL server, as soon as I finish going through steps in configuring the file connection manager to use the variable for connectionstring, it immediately disappears. I repeated the tutorial three times exactly as I pointed out and when I reach to this step of configuring file connection manager for connectionstring, it takes the path and when I start debugging it, I get this error. When I go and check if everything is Ok, the connectionstring value is empty.
I need to import multiple flat files with different formats into different tables of the sql server database and not able to figure out the best way out in ssis to do so...
What are the possible methods in ssis to do so and if possible the process which can be dynamic as file names or columns might change in future.
I have a couple of hundred flat files to import into database tables using SSIS.
The files can be divided into groups by the format they use. I understand that I could import each group of files that have a common format at the same time using a Foreach Loop Container.
However, the example for the Foreach Loop Container has multiple files all being imported into the same database table. In my case, each file needs to be imported into a different database table.
Is it possible to import each set of files with the same format into different tables in a simple loop? I can't see a way to make a Data Flow Destination item accept its table name dynamically, which seems to prevent me doing this.
I suppose I could make a different Data Flow Destination item for each file, in the Data Flow. Would that be a reasonable solution, or is there a simpler solution, or should I just resign myself to making a separate Data Flow for every single file?
Hi,I use SqlDataReader to read one row from database and than set some properties to values retrieved like this:string myString = myReader.GetValue(0) // this sets myString to first value in a rowIf, however, I change order of columns returned by stored procedure myString would be set to wrong value. Is there a way to do something like this: string myString = myReader.GetValue["ColumnName"];
Hi I have 2 tables defined as follows: Table1 = uid, Field1, Field2, Field3 ... Fieldn, FormUID Table2 = FormUID, Label, Position When I query Table1 I would like to replace the column name of Field1...Fieldn with the Label from Table2 where the Position = n value of Field lable e.g. lets say Table2 contains the following 1, customerName, 1 1, customerTitle, 2 1, customerDOB, 3 and Table1 might contain 1, Paul Jones, Mr, 21/09/1987, 1 when I query Table1 I would get uid = 1, Field1 = Paul Jones, Field2 = Mr, Field3 = 21/09/1987 what I would like to get is uid = 1, customerName = Paul Jones, customerTitle = Mr, customerDOB = 21/09/1987 I have up to 20 Fieldn columns so need to do this for all columns even if there is no matching columns. any help would be great regards
I have a table that contains codes for commodities. Some of the codes in this table have changed and some of them have not.So now i want to design a solution that enable me to map the new codes in a different mapping table to the old ones in the other table.I also want to retain the old codes because most of the archived data used the old codes.
Where there is no new code, the current code is being retained. How do i design my table and queries so that i can use the new codes as if i was using the old code.I want to select products with a certain code but using the new code and mapping to the old codes or vice versa.
The structure of the data is like this. Code Name AA AA AL Aluminium ALM ALM ALT Aluminium in tonnes AR AR AUD Australian Dollars AUJPY AUJPY CAQ CAQ CC CC CCF CCF CER Carbon Emmission Reduction
The mapping table is like this: XAA AA XAL AL XMA ALM XAL ALT XAR AR
I created a new package with a source and destination and manually created the output column with data type, etc. Works. The issue is say the table has 200 columns to export.. I dont want to create these by hand. How can I just say export them all to csv format and not have to specify and map each and every column?
I am new to using SSIS. I am supposed to move data from a text file to a SQL Server table. I did that successfuly when I simply mapped column one-to-one, but when I could not conditionally map one column to different destination column depending on some criteria.
Example: I want to make SSIS map the column A depending on the value of field X:
If X= Value1 Map A -> B
if X= Value2 map A -> C and so on.
This is an urgent situation. I will really appreciate instant help.
As soon as I call the input.GetVirtualInput(); method I get a com exception ,Seem that I am missing a
VirtualInputColumnCollection on the component ,but can't seem to figure out why.
When I drop the all the other components and only keep the OLEDb Source and OLEDB Destination with a flow between them , the call to input.GetVirtualInput() doe not fail with a com exception and I can mapping normally
I have set up a script task in one of my packages that I have set up to modify another package right before running it. This package is nothing more than a data flow task that transfers rows via an sql command from one table into another. The strange thing is I have gotten it to work with some tables but not with others. T
he script bombs out in the loop where i map all of the columns found below, where i use MapInputColumn with the error HRESULT: 0xC0010009 On Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.Wrapper.IDTSExternalMetadataColumnCollection90.get_Item(Object Index)
The thing is this happens after looping roughly 55 times but there are still about 100 columns that it needs to loop through still.
Code Block
Dim input As IDTSInput90 = data_destination.InputCollection(0) Dim virtual_input As IDTSVirtualInput90 = input.GetVirtualInput Dim input_column As IDTSInputColumn90 Dim virtual_column As IDTSVirtualInputColumn90
' Iterate through the virtual input column collection and map field names For Each virtual_column In virtual_input.VirtualInputColumnCollection input_column = inst_data_destination.SetUsageType(input.ID, virtual_input, virtual_column.LineageID, DTSUsageType.UT_READONLY)
inst_data_destination.MapInputColumn(input.ID, input_column.ID, input.ExternalMetadataColumnCollection.FindObjectByID(virtual_column.Name).ID) Next
Just for kicks i removed the mapping portion of the code and left in the SetUsageType to see if it would update the available input columns in the destination. The script will then finish successfully but still only the 55 or so fields out of 155 are available in the input. So i then stepped through the script with the mapping portion still disabled and after it loops successfully, i call reinitialize meta data and it produces an error in the input_column variable: HRESULT: 0xC0047041.
I find it odd that this still reports to me that the script finished successfully and I also find it odd that this works fine on two other tables I've tested but not this one. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I am trying to to make a dynamic column mapping using the SSIS, the mapping will be stored in a seperate table, and based on the file name, the necessary mapping will be applied.
Hi I have migrated a DTS 2000 package to an SSIS package.
Half of it works fine, when stored procedures are called that don't use parameters they work fine on SSIS.
However when a SP is called with a parameter it can't find the parameter name ?
I have mapped the parameter under "parameter mappings" , the parameter is a simple date value which is created at the beginning of the SSIS package in a SQL task.
it is saved as a global variable , and i have mapped this as the parameter , yet it still can't find the param. name ?
I'm creating a DTSX that will load flat file data into a table. Pretty easy, eh? Not with dates and times ...
The column in the destination table is a datetime data-type.
The date format in the source flat file is "m/d/yyyy" ("5/27/2007"). I know it doesn't have a time portion, long story!
When I create the package and transform the flat file data into the SQL Server Destination, the table column returns as a timestamp datatype. Moreover, there's no mechanism (that I've found) to force the destination datatype to datetime. There's DB Date, DB Time, FileTime, etc ... but no plain-old datetime.

Is there any way to see/look the sql statement which is formed after Parameter Subsititution inside the log file? Can we print the SQL Statement Formed by the Execute SQL task inside a script task ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks in advance
I am transferring a huge Database running on PostgreSQL to SQL SERVER using SSIS. I have already mapped all the columns between source and target tables. Is it possible in SSIS to get a graphical diagram showing all the source and targets tables and its mapping?
I created a Stored Proc to compute all the data I need to export to a CSV file. I use the provider MS OLE DB Provider for SQL Server. It's a very simple package with a single Data Flow Task. This flow task is using an OLE DB Source to call a simple SQL Command : Exec MyStoredProc. There are no params.
This Stored Proc is using table variables to compute the data. It takes about 10 seconds to return anything. The problem is that the mapping doesn't work with the OLE DB Source. There are no fields at all shown in the mapping screen.
I tried to replace the Stored Proc by a version which only returns fields and no data. Then the mapping would work just fine. The package is then compiling and working fine. But everytime I put back the real stored proc, even without changing the SQL Command, the SSIS execution breaks at execution. It keeps saying :
"Error: 0xC0202005 at Data Flow Task, OLE DB Source [477]: Column "RecordType" cannot be found at the datasource."
My guess is that SSIS doesn't wait the 10 secs and thinks the Stored Proc is not returning anything. What can I do to make this work ?
I have a condition where if column5 is equal to 1 then put column6 into the destination column "dest6", if it is not equal to 1 then put column6 in destination column "dest7"
What is the best way to do this in SSIS?
If I have to use the conditional split then do I have to copy my complete mappings, exact change this one column?
Thank for the help this mapping will take me a long time!
In my destination table i am having some 30 columns and the CSV files what i get may have 10 columns or 20. How do I map columns between source and destination dynamically?
