SSIS Package Development Standards/Workarounds

Apr 25, 2008

Having a difficult time setting up a development environment and a set of standards for SSIS package development.

First of all, you can't run the dataflow object "SQL Server Destination" in BIDS because BULKCOPY can only be run from the actual server. So how do you test/debug a package with this object in it?

Second of all, if you create an SSIS package on a developer computer in BIDS, and then import it into the SSIS package store on your development SQL server, you can't run the package from Management Studio on the developer PC. You get the error "DTS_E_PRODUCTLEVELTOLOW" when it tries to run any of the SSIS. Do I have to have SSIS installed on the developer client machine? How do I do that without installing a full server instance on each client machine (not to mention the licsense issues)?

Lastly, what protection level would you suggest using for production? We are having issues with ODBC connection passwords being decrypted and thus package steps failing in using "EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey". What exactly does this protection level do? Our network is physically very locked down, so we arent worried about SSIS package security too much, just looking for a way for them to work reliably without having to setup complicated security scenarios.

thanks for your time.

Standards For Custom Component Development

Jan 24, 2006

Hi,

Maybe I didn't search hard enough on BOL, but does Microsoft have a documented set of standards regarding custom component development for SSIS. Things like:

- extend this base class, implement this interface

- override these methods

- follow these naming conventions

- best practices

Thanks,

SSIS Package Does Not Run On Server But OK In Development

I have a SSIS package that runs fine when I execute it in visual studio but when I run it on the server as a job it fails. This is nothing to do with protection levels etc as the job is running. It fails part way through with this as the error log

Integration Services :: SSIS Standards And Documentation Template

Oct 21, 2015

I am sure this questions have been asked  but i was not able to find a useful information.

1. I am looking for a SSIS Standards document or source. A document developer can use for developing ssis package. This should include how to name each container, task , and how to organize things. Basics of SSIS. Is there some kind of source where i can find this information . We are starting out to migrate from informatica to SSIS but before we do that we would like to put standards in place so all SSIS development is consistent.

2. SSIS project documentation template that we can use to document each project.  Is there anything out there that we can follow to document each of our project.

Development Issues With SSIS

Oct 26, 2006

We have been facing some delevelopment issues with SSIS. These are as follows:

We want to execute some tasks in a particular package depending on a condition. Example: If record count is more than 0 then go to next task else stop the package.
We tried to write a script, in which we evaluate the value of the variable. This variable is populated with the record count value.
We cannot find any particular function which can exit the package successfully. We can fail the Task, but that means the package is failed. wo dont want to fail the package.
In short we want to conditionally execute some tasks in a package. Something like an "If container" similar to "For container".

We have one main package from which we execute 5 other packages. We want to assign values for connection information and variables in this main package only. The other 5 packages should pick values from this main package.

We are scheduling our package from Windows Scheduled Tasks. When the package is run in this manner, it doesnt read values of variables and connections from configuration file. It uses the values that were provided during development which are embedded in the code.

Thanks

SSIS Development Suggestions

Mar 20, 2006

I could use some help from those of you who have SSIS deployed in a production environment. The developer creates a SSIS package on a workstation with BIDS. Package accesses a network drive and a SQL database on a development server. The developer can test the SSIS package successfully in BIDS.

The only way to use the ServerStorage protect level is that the developer needs to save the SSIS package directly to the development server (we are storing the package in SQL Server). This is not a problem, but it possesses a problem when we need to migrate the SSIS package to the production server. This is because in development our databases are suffixed with the word test. Also, the SQL Server user id that has access to the tables has a different password in production. We run our SSIS packages with the SQL agent. The SQL agent id has permissions to the network drives; the connection information within the package has permissions to the SQL tables.

How can the DBA, who would ideally does not want to and may not be able to due to audit restrictions, update the server name, user password, and database name without using BIDS? I tried using the configuration file option, but that does not seem to work. It keeps deploying the XML configuration file to my local machine even after successfully migrating the package to SQL Server.

To me, the DBA should simply need to run the deployment wizard and target the production server. At the time of the deployment, the wizard should prompt for items that need to be updated, and the settings should be stored in SQL Server. I know this scenario sounds exactly like those presented in the docs, but I must be doing something wrong.

SSIS Team Development

In the past I wrote DTS transforms entirely by myself. With SSIS, our team of several developers now wants each member to develop a piece of the same package.

Do SSIS packages support this type of simultaneous multi-developer creation or is it a "one developer at a time" type product?

Parallel Development Of SSIS Packages

Jun 29, 2007

I have seen a number of posts regarding parallel development of SSIS packages and need some further information.

So far we have been developing SSIS packages along a single development stream and therefore have managed to avoid parallel development of our packages.

However, due to business pressures we will soon have multiple project streams running in parallel, and therefore multiple code branches, as part of that we will definitely need to redevelop the same SSIS packages in parallel. Judging from your post above and some testing we have done this is going to be a nightmare as we cannot merge the code. We can put in place processes to try and mitigate this but there are bound to be issues along the way.

Do you know whether this problem is going to be fixed? We are now using Team Foundation Server but presumably the merge algorythm used is same/similar to that of VSS and therefore very flaky?

However, not only are we having problems with the merging of the XML files, but we also use script tasks within the packages which are precompiled, as the DTSX files contain the binary objects associated with the script source code, if two developers change the same script task in isolated branches the binary is not recompiled as the merge software does not recognise this object.

Do you know whether these issues have been identified and are going to be fixed to be in line with the rest of Microsoft Configuration Managment principles of parallel development?

Many thanks.

Problem In Transporting SSIS Packages From The Local System To Development

Jan 2, 2008

Posts 7

Dear all
I have developed some packages (around 40) on my local system.
now i m trying to move the integration services project on the production server.
when i double click on the intergration services from the local drive of the server all the packages are up(works fine till here)
now i open any of the package-->this is what happens
Prompt1)-->TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
------------------------------
There were errors while the package was being loaded.
The package might be corrupted.
See the Error List for details.
------------------------------
BUTTONS:
OK
------------------------------

i press ok and then the prompt comes
Prompt2-->There were build errors.Do you want to continue with the last build and continue..yes..no..
i click yes ..and then error comes

prompt3-->
Error loading RTS-IMRB-DISTRIBUTION.dtsx: The connection "Excel Connection Manager" is not found. This error is thrown by Connections collection when the specific connection element is not found.

and finally the prompt for the OLE DB error
prompt 4-->[OLE DB Destination [14]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "NDELNTX46.IMRB RTS.siddharth" failed with error code 0xC0202009. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed.

Possible work around suggested to me was that in the base system(read local) before exporting go to package properties and the security and set the security as "Encrypt all with password" and also put some Password which i did and it worked for one.
other thing i thought off was creating the configuration file but first i thought of fully running one complete package on the production and then think of the configuration file.
so i went inside the invidual excel connection and pointed it to the correct new file location and also edited the OLE DB database connection and put my user name and password and checked save password and trying to run the entire thing.
but still the same problem..
one more thing i observed was that my OLE DB was going off everytime i am running the package.and i have to enter my password again...so othe save password i guess is not working

I know its a little long post..but i wanted to explain the entire process and problem to all with description.
all suggestions are welcome

Thanks in advance
cheers & Happy new year

Reporting Services Footer Issue And Workarounds

Hi Ronnie
Sorry I was late in getting back to you as I was out of the office in the last couple of days
I made some checks and it seems the problem that you have is a genuine one.
The workarounds that you specified are the only solutions available now.

I checked with the development team and even though they are aware of the problem, they told me that there won€™t be changes to fix it in SQL 2008
So you have to decide on one of the workarounds that you specified

Best Regards,

Hi Tamer,
I wonder if you had any updates on our issue with RS2005.

Thanks,

Thanks for your help on this issue, I am going to more research on your solution (moving the footer to the body).
Meanwhile, I be looking forward for your sample as well.

Thanks again for all your efforts.

Ronnie Peretz

Hi neil
I think there is a way to implement your need in Reporting Services
Reporting Services has a free form designer which means that whatever you put on the report will appear in the same order in the final view. This is why we don€™t have a report footer.

Instead of putting the stub in the footer, just put it after the last item.
You can use a list dataregion to make sure that the stub will always appear at the bottom of the page in the expected location

Ronnie, I hope that solves your problem
Contact me directly if you need more info on how to implement this

Best Regards,
Tamer Farag

Here are all the facts I learned about Reporting Services "Report Footer" limitations and workaround I have tried.

Objective: On the last page of an invoice at the bottom of the last page have a stub of the invoice:

Issue: Reporting Services does not support Report Footer only Page Footer. (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1439673&SiteID=1)

Work around that I have tried:

Work around 1:

I have created a page footer with a rectangle and set the Visibility expression to =Globals.PageNumber < Globals.TotalPages

Results: The page footer did show up only in the last page, but created a block of space in the first pages.

I was trying to see if there is a way to suppress the spaces from the first pages, and found out it's not supported in Reporting Services

This behavior where the report body would consume the space of the empty page header & footer is currently not supported.

-- Robert (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=340650&SiteID=1)

Work around 2:

I tried to fit all the footer objects in the rectangle in a very small height range, hoping it will auto grow at run time. That did not work as well.

The textboxes did auto grow, but the Rectangle object or the Page Footer itself does not auto grow, cause to cut the footer information.

Work around 3:

Set the property on the page footer PrintOnFirstPage to False, and PrintOnLastPage = True, Reporting services does print the footer in pages in between.

works great for reports that have only 2 pages, but not not more then 2 pages

Best workaround:

Instead of having a space block at the bottom of each page, have a marketing text on every page except the last page

I had overlap a textbox on top of the rectangle (in the page footer) and having this expression on the Visibility =Globals.PageNumber = Globals.TotalPages.

For most of the invoices which are one page, that text will not show up and the Invoice stub will show up

For Invoices which are two pages or more, the marketing text will show up in the first pages only and in the last page the Invoice stub will show.

note: this workaround cause a warning saying "Overlapping report items are not supported in all renderers."

but it is supported for PDF.

Determining Runtime Or Design Time During Validate - Workarounds?

Sep 4, 2007

I've seen a couple of posts in this forum on this subject. If anyone knows of a workaround it would be great to hear.

The problem is this. I'm writing a component that looks a bit like an OLE DB destination: it writes to something that looks like a table. During design time I want the component to update the list of available destination columns if they change - so I want Validate to return VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA if it detects a change. However during runtime I only want to validate that the component will run ok. So I still want to check what the destination looks like but if, say, someone has just added a column then my determination is it is ok to procede with the execution.

ValidateExternalMetadata doesn't help in this case because I still want to validate against the destination. I just don't want to raise VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA during runtime because it aborts execution and I can determine that although there is a change to the destination it is not one that will cause the component to fail.

Any thoughts and experience on this would be great to hear!

It appears that the compiler-generated add_xxx and remove_xxx have the MethodImpl(MethodImplOptions.Synchronized) attribute defined by default, and "Explicit synchronization is not allowed". The same limitation also applies to classes by default, although technically one is able to define the implementation directly (clearly not ideal).

Passing Execute DTS Package Result (success/failure) To Calling SSIS Package

Mar 6, 2008

I have a SSIS job, one of the last steps it performs is to execute a SQL 2000 DTS package. This has to be done as a SQL 2000 DTS package as it is performing rebuilds of SQL 2000 Analysis Services dimensions and cubes. We've found that when the DTS fails the SSIS job is happily completing showing as a success, we would prefer to know it went wrong.

As far as I'm aware SSIS merely starts the DTS off and doesn't care about it's result. I've taken a look in to turning on the logging for the execute DTS package and thought that the ExecuteDTS80PackageTaskTaskResult would give me the answer I need...but is merely written to the log not available as an event-handler. It also looks like it is not safe to put a SQL task in as the next item to go look at the SQL 2000 system tables to look at the log for the DTS package as the SSIS documentation warns that the DTS package can continue to run after the execute DTS package task has ended.

Ideally I want any error raised within the DTS package to cascade up to be an error in the SSIS job, I can then handle it appropriately. I cannot find a way to do this. Is there a way?

If not, can anyone suggest how in the remainder of the SSIS tasks I can be sure that the DTS has completed before I start any other tasks that will check for the SQL 2000 log of its execution?

Several Different Errors When Creating And Running SSIS Package. Package Runs Successfuly Sometimes.

May 2, 2008

Hi All,

I am in the process of moving from a 32-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054) to a 64-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054 with 4 CPUs and 8GB of memory on Win 2003 SP2) and the process has been very frustrating to say the least. I am having a problem with packages that I created on my 64-bit SQL Server. I am importing a few tables from the 32-SQL Server into the 64-bit SQL Server using the Task --> Import to create the package.

Sometimes when I am creating a package I get the following error in a message box:

SQL Server Import and Export Wizard

The SSIS Runtime object could not be created. Verify that DTS.dll is available and registered. The wizard cannot continue and it will terminate.

Additional information: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. (System.Windows.Forms)

Other times when I run a package that has run successfully before I get the following error:

Faulting application dtexecui.exe, version 9.0.3042.0, stamp 45cd726d, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault address 0x025d23f0.

Other times I get this error message:

.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1433 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FFEE24) (80131506)

And still other times

The package appears to hang when running. By this I mean that the Package Execution Progress shows progress up to a point then it just stops. (The package takes about 17 seconds to run normally) CPU usage is at 1% and the package cannot be stopped.

I have deleted and re-created the package several times and I have also re-installed the service pack on the SQL Server (9.0.3054) but that did not help.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to try?

Thanks.

Problem When Running A SSIS Master-package-child Package On Non Default Sql-server Instance

Dec 6, 2007

Hi there

We have a SSIS run which runs as follows

The master package has a configuration file, specifying the connect strings
The master package passes these connect-strings to the child packages in a variable
Both master package and child packages have connection managers, setup to use localhost. This is done deliberately to be able to test the packages on individual development pc€™s.
We do not want to change anything inside the packages when deploying to test, and from test to production. All differences will be in the config files (which are pretty fixed, they very seldom change). That way we can be sure that we can deploy to production without any changes at all.

The package is run from the file system, through a job-schedule.

We experience the following when running on a not default sql-server instance (called dkms5253uedw)

Case 1:
The master package starts by executing three sql-scripts (drop foreign key€™s, truncate tables, create foreign key€™s). This works fine.

The master package then executes the first child package. We then in the sysdtslog get:

Error - €œcannot connect to database xxx€?
Info - €œpackage is preparing to get connection string from parent €¦€?

The child package then executes OK, does all it€™s work, and finish. Because there has been an error, the master package then stops with an error.

Case 2:
When we run exactly the same, but with the connection strings in the config file pointing to the default instance (dkms5253), the everything works fine.

Case 3:
When we run exactly the same, again against the dkms5253uedw instance, but now with the exact same databases defined in the default instance, it also works perfect.

Case 4:
When we then stop the sql-server on the default instance, the package faults again, this time with

Error - €œtimeout when connect to database xxx€?
Info - €œpackage is preparing to get connection string from parent €¦€?

And the continues as in the first case

From all this we conclude, that the child package tries to connect to the database before it knows the connection string it gets passed in the variable from the master package. It therefore tries to connect to the default instance, and this only works if the default instance is running and has the same databases defined. As far as we can see, the child package does no work against the default instance (no logging etc.).

We have tried delayed validation in the packages and in the connection managers, but with the same results (error).

So we are desperately hoping that someone can help us solve this problem.

Passing Value From A Child Package To The Parent Package That Calls It In Ssis

May 21, 2007

hi,

I am interested in Passing value from a child Package variable to the Parent package that calls it in ssis.

I am able to call the Child package using the execute package task and use Configurations to pass values from the parent variable to the child, but I am not able to pass the value from the child to the parent.

I have a variable called datasetId in both the parent and child. it gets computed in the child and needs to be passed to the parent...

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help in advance..

smathew
