SSIS Package Protection Level - DontSaveSensitive

Feb 1, 2008

For those of you who have had a hard time like me trying to figure out using Protection level for an SSIS package whilst deploying the package via the SQL Server Agent, here is a piece of advice:

Firstly the protection level is set by Default to - "EncryptSensitivewithUserKey".

The encryption actually takes place only if you have things like - passwords etc..

From my experience - using both - "EncryptSensitivewithUserKey" and "EncryptSensitivewithPassword" Security features have turned out to be unreliable when deploying through SQL Server Agent (even while using a Proxy account having all previliges).

This is it seems because of issues with the user who created the package being different from the user who deployed the package. (which is really ridiculous).

So I used the ProtectionLevel - "DontSaveSensitive" - which means it is not going to encrypt anything in the package and so ur sensitive information would be blank. You would have to then supply your password etc using a configuration XML file. - using SSIS "Package configuation" in your menu....

This has been the most reliable way of solving the whole problem with encryption.

bear in mind that you might want to put the XML file in a secure location to which no one else has access to.

Thanks

SSIS Package Will Not Execute When DontSaveSensitive Protection Level Is Selected

Nov 9, 2006

Hi,

Can anyone explain to me why my ssis packages will not work when DontSaveSensitive protection level is selected? My package configurations are set as SQL server configuration type, and I have a table in a database that contains all the sensitive information (passwords and such). If I select "EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey" everything works, but I will be the only one able to execute the packages (not good, I need others to be able to execute them as well).

The error I'm getting tells me that the connection is not configured correctly or I may not have the right permissions on the connection.

My guess is that the DontSaveSensitive drops the passwords, but when I edit the data source and re-enter the password, it still does not work. Also, the database table I use that contains the sensitive data is not affected, all data remains.

What the fudge is going on here? I'm a newbie at this, can someone help me out?

Package Protection Level Problem

Mar 11, 2008

Hello,
I have a package that contains a connection manager to a DB2 source. The password is configured within the connection mananger. The configuration string was included in the package configurations (SQL Server). The package is saved in VSS, and locally on my hard drive.

When a colleague attempts to open the package is Visual Studio (from VSS), He gets a message similar to the following.

Error 1 Error loading 'Geac_RK502.dtsx' : Failed to remove package protection with error 0x8009000B "Key not valid for use in specified state.". This occurs in the CPackage::LoadFromXML method. . C:Documents and SettingscdunnMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsGeac_RK502Geac_RK502Geac_RK502.dtsx 1 1

I'm very sure the package protection level was to encrypt sensitive data with user key. After he ran into this problem, I tried again to open the package from my computer (the machine that the package was created on) and now I get the same message. If I attempt to open the package anyway, I first get a message that there were errors in the package while it was being loaded, and that the package might be corrupt. After that message, I get one that states the document contains one or more extremely long lines of text....do you still want to open the file. If I click yes, the package opens read only with the following message:

Microsoft Visual Studio is unable to load this document. Failed to remove package protection with error 0x80090008. "Key not valid for use in specified state". This occurs iin the CPackage:LoadFromXML method.

I'm looking into more information about package protection. What can I do to avoid this problem, and what protection level should I be using so that my colleague can open the package? How can I correct the problem with this particular package, and have the package open?

Thank you for your help!

SQL 2012 :: SSIS Deployments - Protection Level Settings

Jun 23, 2014

I am currently designing a SSIS package that will migrate data from Syabse to Sql server. If these packages are to be deployed to file system (as this is one time run for migrating data) or to SSIS catalog or to Sql server.

Also, I have not changed the default protection level value in packages during design time and would like to know if I have to change it while handling the deployment using DTutil (yes, i need to deploy & execute using command line utilities).

Please note that I do not have access to PROD, UAT environments and deployment team will use my BAT file that is expected to deploy and execute the packages.

Protection Level Not Working With SP2?

Sep 6, 2007

I'm having problems with ftp tasks in SSIS packages where protectionlevel=EncryptSensativeWithPassword. I've used this many times with no problems, but now that I've upgraded to 2005 SP2, It's not working as before.

I have a functioning SSIS package with an FTP download. It works fine on my workstation in the developement environment.

If I load it to the SQL server using Server Manager Studio under my account, I cannot run the package from the server when logged on as Administrator, nor can I schedule it to run under the SQLAgent account as a job. The error mesages are: Unable to connect to FTP server using "FTP Connection Manager" and "The password was not allowed". Obviously the password being sent to the ftp server is wrong, but it was right under developement. Further more, If I log into the server under my account the package runs fine!

If I load the package while logged in as administrator, I can only run the package as administrator. And of course, if I load the package as SQLagent, I can only run the package as SQLagent.

This is not how SSIS packages were operating before I upgraded! In fact I've reloaded some existing packages and found that they now have inherited this behavior (after they have been re-imported)

It looks to me like SSIS is using the EncryptSensativeWithUserKey option, instead of the EncryptSensativeWithPassword option. I'm not sure how to confirm this, short of using a packet sniffer to watch the ftp traffic.

I could switch to PackageConfigurations, but I was happy with the EncryptSensativeWithPassword option, which seemed appropriate for our operation.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on, or any suggestions to troubleshoot this? How can I tell if password is encrypted or not?

Setting The Protection Level Of Packages

Aug 31, 2007

Hello everyone,

Can someone recommend me the most efficient protection level for SSIS
packages for my environment? I've been doing some reading on this lately, but can't really decide which one to use. The Rely on server storage for encryption (ServerStorage) seems interesting, but I'm unsure if that would work on my environment (Windows Authentication).

Currently I'm saving my packages to my dev server under "Encrypt sensitive data with user key" Protection level, but seems like the passwords for the FTP Connection for instance doesn't get saved when I deploy my package to the server.

Our environment consists of 2 dev servers + 2 prod servers with windows authentication, our SQL Agent Account is a domain account with local admin rights and sysadmin rights on the SQL Server and we try to use proxy accounts to access network resources instead of giving the agent access to everything.

This is what I found on MS's web site.

Sysem.Data.SqlServerCe.SyncStatus' Is Inaccessible Due To Its Protection Level

Jul 28, 2006

I made a merge replication and sucessfully connected with mobile device. Everything works fine. Because I wanna try asynchronous synchronization (which won't stop my application executing when subscribing) I read How to example from MSDN :
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172391.aspx
But there is a problem with creating SyncStatus class object. I can't get into it and I can't create. maybe some reference will help? (I use reference to SQLServerCE). This error stoped my work for now, so I am waiting for some answers.

And if it's simple resolution for this problem - sorry. I just started programming applications for Mobile Devices.

Can SSIS Save The Context Of Errors At The Package Level?

Feb 20, 2007

Lately, I have been experimenting with SSIS and I created a generic custom error logging component that saves all offending data on data flow component failure. However...

Instead of re-directing rows at the data flow level and handling/logging the data at that level, is it possible to catch all of this information at the package level and handle/process it there?

If so how would you do this?

Thanks!

SSIS OnError Calling Package Level Event Handler Twice..little Help Here!

Oct 6, 2006

My project currently has task which have their own individual event handlers that get called onError (setup event messages). I also have a package level event handler that performs a generic task (sending events to the windows eventviewer) In the package level event handler there is a script task that decides on a boolean variable whether to "Success" or "Failure" to different task. When I fail one task of the main control flow, the task level event handler runs, then the package level event handler runs, and then it also runs again for some unknown reason. The second time it runs it picks up the value of a variable set in the variables window. However, I change this value at runtime to the value from a database. I can't understand why it would run the second time, and if it did run why it would have the value from the variables window and not the value that is set in memory. It's like the event handler runs with the value from memory and then runs and picks the values back out of the variables window, replacing the db values and re-runs.

Maybe the package itself is failing all together and then re-runing the package level event handler?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SQl Agents And Package Protection Levels

Feb 20, 2008

All:
I am aware that I am raising an issue/question that has quite a number of ancestors in this forum. In reviewing some of the threads I still believe my situation has a bit of a twist; but that could just be me.

The process I used until a change I made recently worked just fine. A handful of my packages connect to our ERP system that only supports an ODBC connection. I set the Protection Level to the default, and then deploy the packages to the server. I use an agent to run the jobs that include these packages as steps. I have hardcoded the userID and password in the SQL jobs and so they have run fine.

In an effort to reduce maintenance on the packages I decided to run the packages from the File System instead of deploying them to the server. Now, the packages are not running as I have not changes the Protection Level yet. I did test running one of the packages using a Proxy I have created but that does not work either.

Based upon what I have read it appears that the first thing I need to do is change the Protection Level to DoNotSaveSensitive. How do I then pass the ID and password to the agent?

a. Create a confirguation file?
b. Create a package template?
c. Both of the above

To reiterate I do not wish to deploy the packages to the server; I prefer to run the packages from the File System. Further, I just have one box on which everything happens; there are no migration issues across servers.

Some insights from this group will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

EncryptSensitiveWithPassword Protection Option Cannot Be Used With DTexec Execution Of SSIS Packages

Nov 6, 2006

Our SSIS packages use the Web Service Task to call services to send email and write package failure data to a department wide database. These Web Service Calls are failing with HTTP 401 errors. It was caused by the passwords for the HTTP connections not being saved when the SSIS pkgs were saved to .dtsx files. I have tried saving the package with a password and the EncryptSensitiveWithPassword protection option. This password can be supplied when the package is called from another package or a package is executed in Visual Studio but cannot be supplied to DTexec to execute the package in a job. DTexec does have a /Password parameter but it is rejected if the package is loaded from a .dtsx file.
This appears to be a bug in DTexec. It only accepts the /Password parameter when the package is loaded with the /SQL option. Specifying /Password and /File is not supported.

Is this a known bug? Are there any workarounds?
Has anyone successfully called a Web Service from SSIS executed via DTexec?

'..product Level Is Insufficient...' Running Package; I Have SP1 Installed

Aug 11, 2006

I read other threads with this problem and one solution was to install SP1 on the workstation. Our server is running 9.00.2047(SP1) and my workstation SSMS version is 9.0.2047.00 so I'm assuming it's SP1 and I am still getting this error.

To make matters worse, I have jobs set up to run these packages ON the server, but they aren't working either because I have '...error authenticating proxy...Logon failure unknown user name or bad password'. I'm trying to use my Windows login because it has sysadmin rights; I created credentials, assigned them to a proxy under SSIS Package Execution; in the SQL Agent log I get the error '...SQLServer Error: 22046, Encryption error using CryptProtectData.'.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Package Level OnError Event Handler Not Firing (as If Not There)

Mar 26, 2008

Hi all,

I have a package on which i've applied a package level OnError event handler. The OnError event handler includes a Script Task (that builds up a string of errorCode, errorDescription, MachineName etc...) and a WebService Task that calls a webservice to send an email including the built up string from the script task in the body of the email. This has worked fine in one package where i've applied it but for some reason in a second package the existence of an OnError package level event handler seems to be completed ignored. I'm causing various package object to fail but the OnError handler never fires. I know the obvious answer is find what's different between the two packages but i can't see that any is different (in relation to package level OnError event handling).

Has anyone else come across this? Any suggestions?

Thanks

The Product Level Is Insufficient For Component When Executing Package Using C# Code.

Jan 30, 2007

Hi,

I have created a Integration Services package that takes a table in a database, and transfers it to a flat file. This package has successfully run through visual studio 2005 as a .dtsx package, and given the output that I expected.

However, now, I am trying to excecute the package (as xml) using C#, and I am receving this error:

Error in Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.TaskHost/DTS.Pipeline : The product level is insufficient for component "Flat File Destination" (31).

I do not understand how a working package would have this kind of error.

Considering that it runs when I do not use C# code to execute the package means that I have SSIS properly installed, and I have the proper versions (or it should not execute ever). I have SP1 for both SQL Server 2005, and Visual Studio 2005 installed.

Other packages that I have created using C# code also have the same problem.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

HowTo: Read/write Package Level Variables In Custom Task

Oct 13, 2006

Hello all,

I have been struggling trying to read and/or write package level variables from within my custom task.  I'd like to be able to get and set values from within the Execute method of my custom task.  I have searched this forum and the books online and can't seem to find the answer.  I thought maybe I could use an expression on my task (mapping the package variable to a custom task public property) but that doesn't seem to be working for me.  I also would have thought I could use the VariableDispenser object from within my task but the collection is empty.  I have 3 package level variables configured and can't seem to find a way to access them (with intentions of getting/setting).  Could someone point me to a good doc or provide an example that may accomplish this?  Thanks!

(I'm using package level variables as a means of passing simple information between tasks that are not using a DB, if there is a better way I'm open to suggestions.)

I've tried Object.value.tostring, but it just returns a generic "system__text". how I can proceed?

Passing Execute DTS Package Result (success/failure) To Calling SSIS Package

Mar 6, 2008

I have a SSIS job, one of the last steps it performs is to execute a SQL 2000 DTS package. This has to be done as a SQL 2000 DTS package as it is performing rebuilds of SQL 2000 Analysis Services dimensions and cubes. We've found that when the DTS fails the SSIS job is happily completing showing as a success, we would prefer to know it went wrong.

As far as I'm aware SSIS merely starts the DTS off and doesn't care about it's result. I've taken a look in to turning on the logging for the execute DTS package and thought that the ExecuteDTS80PackageTaskTaskResult would give me the answer I need...but is merely written to the log not available as an event-handler. It also looks like it is not safe to put a SQL task in as the next item to go look at the SQL 2000 system tables to look at the log for the DTS package as the SSIS documentation warns that the DTS package can continue to run after the execute DTS package task has ended.

Ideally I want any error raised within the DTS package to cascade up to be an error in the SSIS job, I can then handle it appropriately. I cannot find a way to do this. Is there a way?

If not, can anyone suggest how in the remainder of the SSIS tasks I can be sure that the DTS has completed before I start any other tasks that will check for the SQL 2000 log of its execution?

Several Different Errors When Creating And Running SSIS Package. Package Runs Successfuly Sometimes.

May 2, 2008

Hi All,

I am in the process of moving from a 32-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054) to a 64-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054 with 4 CPUs and 8GB of memory on Win 2003 SP2) and the process has been very frustrating to say the least. I am having a problem with packages that I created on my 64-bit SQL Server. I am importing a few tables from the 32-SQL Server into the 64-bit SQL Server using the Task --> Import to create the package.

Sometimes when I am creating a package I get the following error in a message box:

SQL Server Import and Export Wizard

The SSIS Runtime object could not be created. Verify that DTS.dll is available and registered. The wizard cannot continue and it will terminate.

Additional information: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. (System.Windows.Forms)

Other times when I run a package that has run successfully before I get the following error:

Faulting application dtexecui.exe, version 9.0.3042.0, stamp 45cd726d, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault address 0x025d23f0.

Other times I get this error message:

.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1433 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FFEE24) (80131506)

And still other times

The package appears to hang when running. By this I mean that the Package Execution Progress shows progress up to a point then it just stops. (The package takes about 17 seconds to run normally) CPU usage is at 1% and the package cannot be stopped.

I have deleted and re-created the package several times and I have also re-installed the service pack on the SQL Server (9.0.3054) but that did not help.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to try?

Thanks.

Problem When Running A SSIS Master-package-child Package On Non Default Sql-server Instance

Dec 6, 2007

Hi there

We have a SSIS run which runs as follows

The master package has a configuration file, specifying the connect strings
The master package passes these connect-strings to the child packages in a variable
Both master package and child packages have connection managers, setup to use localhost. This is done deliberately to be able to test the packages on individual development pc€™s.
We do not want to change anything inside the packages when deploying to test, and from test to production. All differences will be in the config files (which are pretty fixed, they very seldom change). That way we can be sure that we can deploy to production without any changes at all.

The package is run from the file system, through a job-schedule.

We experience the following when running on a not default sql-server instance (called dkms5253uedw)

Case 1:
The master package starts by executing three sql-scripts (drop foreign key€™s, truncate tables, create foreign key€™s). This works fine.

The master package then executes the first child package. We then in the sysdtslog get:

Error - €œcannot connect to database xxx€?
Info - €œpackage is preparing to get connection string from parent €¦€?

The child package then executes OK, does all it€™s work, and finish. Because there has been an error, the master package then stops with an error.

Case 2:
When we run exactly the same, but with the connection strings in the config file pointing to the default instance (dkms5253), the everything works fine.

Case 3:
When we run exactly the same, again against the dkms5253uedw instance, but now with the exact same databases defined in the default instance, it also works perfect.

Case 4:
When we then stop the sql-server on the default instance, the package faults again, this time with

Error - €œtimeout when connect to database xxx€?
Info - €œpackage is preparing to get connection string from parent €¦€?

And the continues as in the first case

From all this we conclude, that the child package tries to connect to the database before it knows the connection string it gets passed in the variable from the master package. It therefore tries to connect to the default instance, and this only works if the default instance is running and has the same databases defined. As far as we can see, the child package does no work against the default instance (no logging etc.).

We have tried delayed validation in the packages and in the connection managers, but with the same results (error).

So we are desperately hoping that someone can help us solve this problem.

Thanx,
/Nils M - Copenhagen
