SSIS Retrieving Output Messages

Aug 29, 2007

Hi,
I am designing a simple SSIS package that tests database connectivity. To use the same connection for each database, I am changing the "InitialCatalog" property of the Connection Manager object to test each database in a server.

When the connection fails, I can capture a generic error message from the exception in a Try...Catch block, but it doesn't tell me why a connection attempt failed. I have tried Package Logging as well and that was actually less helpful.

I would have stopped there except the Output Window and Progress/Execution Results tabs BOTH show that the reason for the error was a login failure. I am trying to capture the message that appears in either of these windows as they are the most helpful.

Has anyone been able to programmatically capture these messages?

Thanks!!!

SQL Server 2014 :: Retrieving All Error Messages Generated By A Command

Jul 17, 2014

Some T-SQL commands can fail with multiple errors. For example, if you try to disable a primary key constraint using ALTER TABLE t1 NOCHECK CONSTRAINT PK, you will get messages like:

Msg 11415, Level 16, State 1, Line 341
Object 'PK' cannot be disabled or enabled. This action applies only to foreign key and check constraints.
Msg 4916, Level 16, State 0, Line 341
Could not enable or disable the constraint. See previous errors.

However, in the code below, only the last message is printed. How can I print all the error messages?

USE tempdb;
CREATE TABLE #t1(c1 INT CONSTRAINT PK PRIMARY KEY);
BEGIN TRY
ALTER TABLE #t1 NOCHECK CONSTRAINT PK;
PRINT 'Primary key disabled'
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
PRINT ERROR_MESSAGE();
END CATCH

Sp_send_dbmail: Need Output To A Query Without The Messages.

Feb 27, 2008

I am writing a stored procedure which finally has to send mail to the customer with a list of phones that have been added to his account. I am getting these phones from a SQL Table in the form of a query, and including the output of the query(list of phones) , in the body of the mail.

There are two issues that I am unable to resolve,

1. I just want the output with no messages.

eg. 8887775567

not

8887777767 ( 1 row(s) effected)

2. One phone number per row.

8887775567
8009978776
6679800077

NOT

8887775567 8009978776 6679800077

Thanks in advance.

BCP-Suppressing System Output Messages After Running BCP

Apr 18, 2002

Hi,

After running BCP to export data from table to text file, we are getting some system generated messages in the log file as below :

output
------------------------------------------------------------------------------NULL
Starting copy...
NULL
81 rows copied.
Network packet size (bytes): 4096
Clock Time (ms.): total 30 Avg 0 (2700.00 rows per sec.)

(6 row(s) affected)

We want to suppress these messages while generating log file. Is there any option for this ?

Retrieving Output Paramater After Insert

Sep 14, 2006

Can some one offer me some assistance? I'm using a SQLDataSource control to call a stored proc to insert a record into a control.  The stored proc I'm calling has an output paramater that returns the new rows identity field to be used later.  I'm having trouble getting to this return value via the SQLDataSource .  Below is my code (C#): SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["USR_AUTH_NAME"].DefaultValue = storeNumber;SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["usr_auth_pwd"].DefaultValue = string.Empty;SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["mod_usr_name"].DefaultValue = "SYSTEM";SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["usr_auth_id"].Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue;SqlDataSource1.Insert();int id = int.Parse(SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["usr_auth_id"].DefaultValue); below is the error I'm getting: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Procedure 'csi_USR_AUTH' expects parameter '@usr_auth_id', which was not supplied. Has anyone done this before and if so how did you do it?

I am using Asp.net 2.0 and I am trying to retrieve the value from an output parameter in a sql server 2005 stored procedure. The following is my code:

Public Function GetUserProfile(ByVal UserID As String, ByVal Name As String) As String
Dim Value As StringDim ValueParam As SqlParameter = New SqlParameter("@Value", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50, ParameterDirection.Output)Dim command As New SqlCommand("sp_GetUserProfile", con)
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@UserID", UserID)command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Name", Name)
'ValueParam.ParameterName = "@Value"
'ValueParam.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.VarChar
'ValueParam.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
'ValueParam.Size = 50
'command.Parameters.Add(ValueParam)
'ValueParam.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
command.Parameters.Add(ValueParam)

'TryIf con.State <> ConnectionState.Open Then con.Open()
command.ExecuteNonQuery()Value = command.Parameters("@Value").Value.ToString
If con.State <> ConnectionState.Closed Then con.Close()Return Value
'Catch ex As Exception
'If con.State <> ConnectionState.Closed Then con.Close()
'Return ""
'End Try
End Function

@Name varchar(25),
@Value varchar(50) OUTPUT
)

The error I am recieving is :   Procedure or function 'sp_GetUserProfile' expects parameter '@Value', which was not supplied. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks!

Retrieving Output Parameter From Stored Proc

Oct 2, 2006

I have difficulty reading back the value of an output parameter that I use in a stored procedure. I searched through other posts and found that this is quite a common problem but couldn't find an answer to it. Maybe now there is a knowledgeable person who could help out many people with a good answer.The problem is that  cmd.Parameters["@UserExists"].Value evaluates to null. If I call the stored procedure externally from the Server Management Studio Express everything works fine.Here is my code:using (SqlConnection cn = new SqlConnection(this.ConnectionString))
{
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("mys_ExistsPersonWithUserName", cn);
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.Parameters.Add("@UserName", SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = userName;
cmd.Parameters.Add("@UserExists", SqlDbType.Int);
cmd.Parameters["@UserExists"].Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;
cn.Open();
int x = (int)cmd.Parameters["@UserExists"].Value;
cn.Close();
return (x>1);
}  And the corresponding stored procedure: ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.mys_Spieler_ExistsPersonWithUserName
(
@UserName varchar(16),
@UserExists int OUTPUT
)
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
SELECT @UserExists = count(*)
FROM mys_Profiles
WHERE UserName = @UserName

RETURN

Generating Dependencies But Will NOT Produce Any Output In Both Results And Messages Tabs

Mar 16, 2015

I am rewriting several stored procedures that originally had lots of "multiplicated" code. I am aware that references to objects within dynamic SQL do not create dependencies, so I intend to add code that will generate the dependencies but will NOT produce any output in both the Results and Messages tabs, not be overly "messy" or complicated, and have the least impact on execution plan creation as possible.

As we use a dependency list of tables used to our support staff pinpoint possible data issues associated with each of these stored procedures.

I have tried a few methods already, including this:

SET @SQL = N'SELECT Column1,Column2 FROM dbo.TableName';
...
/***************************************************************************************/
/* This code block is only to establish dependency of objects used within dynamic SQL. */
/* */
/* SET statements are used so that no output is produced in Results or Messages tabs. */
/* Object existence check avoids error 208, "Invalid object name" message. */
/***************************************************************************************/
DECLARE @DependentObject SQL_VARIANT;
IF OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.TableName', N'U') IS NOT NULL
SET @DependentObject = ( SELECT TOP (1) Column1,Column2 FROM dbo.TableName);
/* End code for dependency of objects used within dynamic SQL */

Retrieving Data From A DB Based On Output Of A Conditional Split

Sep 5, 2007

This is probably an easy question, and I just can't find the solution. I've searched extensively, but I am probably just not searching for exactly what I need.

Basically, I have a Conditional Split. What I need to do is for each row coming out of my split, I need to SELECT some data from another database based on one of the fields and then place the data from the DB into a file for later processing.

Seems pretty simple, considering the power of SSIS. Using tools such as OLE DB Command didn't help - the data that comes out of the OLE DB Command is the input data, not the data returned by the command.

How can I do this?

Thank you!

Suppress Messages In SSIS

Nov 28, 2007

Hi,

I am running SSIS package using command line. However I want to suppress the messages that come and I want to display my own messages. How can I do that?

For eg: I am using File System task to transfer a file from source to destination. How will i tell this to the user who is seeing this executed at the command line?

thanks.

Cryptic And Useless SSIS Error Messages

Aug 22, 2007

First of all, please let me prefix this by saying AAARRRRRGGGGGHH!!!

Troubleshooting an SSIS package is not even close to easy. The error messages are incredibly cryptic and are anything but useful. It is absurd that for most of the errors that I get, I find myself putting the error codes into Google to find out what they mean and how to address them. Since there is indeed an known exception, why not include a "descriptive" description of the error?

Okay, enough with the venting. Sorry about that...

What I really came here to ask is this, what in the world does this error message REALLY mean? I have found nothing useful on the Internet so far. The resulting forums and blogs with the error code do not apply to what I am doing.

Error: The attempt to send a row to SQL Server failed with error code 0x80004005.

How To Get More Descriptive Error Messages In SSIS,Programatically?

Apr 28, 2008

hi all,
I am developing an application in C# which creates SSIS package programatically.These packages perform various activities like transfering data from one server to another,extract data from table,transfering data from sql to msaccess etc.Here I am using the following code to get the description of the SSIS errorcode.

Code Snippet
Public static String GetErrMesg(IDTSComponentMetaData90 MD,Exception Err)
{
try
{
COMException comEx=Err as COMException;
return MD.GetErrorDescription(comEx.ErrorCode);
}
Catch
{
return Err.Message;
}

For example if the error code is 0xC0204018,the application shows its equivalent description as
"The "%1!s!" has a precision that is not valid. The precision must be between %2!ld! and %3!ld! "

But the actual error message is "The Output column "fund" has a precision that is not valid. The precision must be between 1 and 18"

My question is how to show more descriptive error message..like how to replace "%1!s!" to the actual field.

Please give ur suggestions...

Friendly Way To Look At Sqlagent Ssis Messages Without Exporting Rest Of Log

Apr 13, 2008

I just started playing with sqlagent and am finding that viewing a specific message from an ssis step is cumbersome when other entries are also in the log. Exporting seems only able to export all history entries. Viewing right in the log viewer leads to a series of boundary expansions and right scrolls that dont seem convenient for quick identification of a problem in a medium sized ssis message. Right clicking on the message in the viewer seems like it is preparing the message for possible copy but it seems to end there. I'm already familiar with the different levels of verbosity available in the command line. Dont see anything useful on the web.

Is there a user friendly way to copy the contents of a specific message for perhaps pasting to notepad , so that problem identification is facilitated? Is there a not so user friendly way available, one taht doest involve 1st exporting the entire log?

Retrieving Native Progress Events For A 2000 Package From SSIS. Is It Possible?

Sep 28, 2006

Dear all,

AFAIK I don't think so. Let me know if possible and how.

I'm talking about a SSIS package which owns a Execute DTS 2000 Package Task and from there it calls a DTS 2000. Programatically, from our VB .Net front-end app we're seeing only SSIS events (when validate and execute methods are called) and any kind of information is provided from RCW proxy (I suppose that internally it gonna be created in order to send messages between managed and unmanaged code).

When a task inside our DTS 2000 fails we're awaring by means a "generic message" such this:

Error: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040427): Execution was canceled by user. at DTS.PackageClass.Execute() at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Tasks.Exec80PackageTask.Exec80PackageTask.ExecuteThread()

Thanks a lot for your time and comments,

Error Retrieving Numeric Data From Oracle 10g On 64 Bit Itanium SSIS Server

Feb 1, 2007

I am working on a project to write SSIS packages to update a SQL Server 2005 database with data from an Oracle 10g database. Unfortunately, our development ETL box is running 32 bit Windows Server 2003 while the production ETL box is running 64 bit Itanium Windows Server 2003. We have created SQL Server Agent jobs to execute all of our packages. All of our jobs run without error on the 32 bit development box, but in our preproduction tests they are failing in the 64 bit box.

In my testing, I've found that I can successfully pull character data from Oracle. For example, I can write a package that retrieves the data for the following query:

SELECT 'test' FROM dual

However, the following fails:

SELECT 1 FROM dual

I have logging turned on in my package. When the package fails, I typically see informational messages in the log up to the point of failure, but no actual error event logs are generated. The only error information I have is in the SQL Server Agent job history log, which contains the following:

Executed as user: SERVERNAMESYSTEM. The return value was unknown. The process exit code was
-2147483646. The step failed.

I have also tried using the 64 bit version of the DTS Wizard to create a sample package, and observe the same behavior. When I run the DTS Wizard, queries that return numeric data cause DTSWizard.exe to exit and produce the following message in the application event log:

Event
Type: Error
Event
Source: .NET Runtime 2.0 Error Reporting
Event
Category: None
Event
ID: 1000
Date:
2/1/2007
Time:

User:

Computer: SERVERNAME
Description:
Faulting
application dtswizard.exe, version 9.0.2047.0, stamp 443f5e50, faulting module
oracore10.dll, version 10.2.0.1, stamp 435841b0, debug? 0, fault address
0x00000000001e4910.Has anyone else experienced similar behavior, and know of a solution aside of wrapping all retrieval of numeric data in to_chars in our Oracle queries?

Load/Run SSIS Packages On The Server From A .net Exe Exception:Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DtsPipelineException: Retrieving.

Jul 28, 2006

Hello, I got an exception when I try to load/run a SSIS Package programmatically on the server using remoting.
The client machine has no SQL Server 2005 component installed..

This is the error I get from my exe application:

Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DtsPipelineException: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {E44847F1-FD8C-4251-B5DA-B04BB22E236E} failed due to the following error: 80040154.
---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040154): Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {E44847F1-FD8C-4251-B5DA-B04BB22E236E} failed due to the following error: 80040154.
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Application..ctor()

And this the Remote component:

<Serializable()> Public Class SSISComponent

Inherits MarshalByRefObject

Public Function LaunchPackage(ByVal sourceLocation As String, ByVal serverName As String, ByVal packageName As String, ByVal packageVariables As SortedList) As Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DTSExecResult

Dim packagePath As String
Dim myPackage As Package
Dim integrationServices As New Application
' Combine path and filename.
packagePath = Path.Combine(sourceLocation, packageName)
Try
If integrationServices.ExistsOnDtsServer(packagePath, serverName) Then
myPackage = integrationServices.LoadFromDtsServer(packagePath, serverName, Nothing)
Else
Throw New ApplicationException( "Invalid package name or location: " & packagePath)
End If
If Not packageVariables Is Nothing Then
For Each de As DictionaryEntry In packageVariables
myPackage.Variables(de.Key).Value = de.Value
Next
End If
LaunchPackage = myPackage.Execute()
Catch ex As Exception
Throw
End Try
End Function
End Class

This is the code that call the remote component to run the package on the Server:
Public Class Test
Private Function LoadAndRunPackageRemotly(ByVal PackageName As String, ByVal PackageVariables As SortedList) As Boolean

Dim launchPackageService As New SSISComponent
Dim packageResult As Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DTSExecResult
Try
packageResult = launchPackageService.LaunchPackage(Me.SSISPackageLocation, Me.SSISServerName, PackageName, PackageVariables)
If packageResult = DTSExecResult.Success Then
LoadAndRunPackageRemotly = True
Else
LoadAndRunPackageRemotly = False
End If
Catch ex As Exception
Throw
End Try
End Function
End Class

I would like to inform that everything run inside a thread because the Package do a lot of things...
When I build up the setup for the exe inside the Detected Dependencies there are several DLL related to SQL Server (Microsoft.SQLServer.DTSRuntimeWrap.dll etc..etc..) that I don't register ..
Tis could be the problem?
If yes, somebody can tell me which one I have to register ? as COM or COMRelativePath?
Some other hints?

This error could be also caused by wrong permissions on the ssis?
Thank you very much for any help...
p.s. To use sql server agent will be my last option!!
Marina b.

How To Write .net Code To Place XML Messages On Queues And Retrieve XML Messages From Queues.

Apr 2, 2008

Hello, please help!!

I have spent days searching the web and forums for an answer to this simple question and cannot find an example.

I have built a service broker application on sql server 2005. The application puts some xml on an incoming queue which is basically a few parameters to be used in a query. This queue will then call a stored proc which does some business logic and puts the resulting results in another queue also in xml.

I have written a test harness in SQL to put messages on the inbound queue and then some sql to retrieve the returned code from the outbound queue.

What I want to do is be able to convert the SQL which does this into .net code to be used by an application. i.e. write in .net some code to put xml on a queue and then write some .net code to retrieve xml from another queue.

I wouldn't have thought this would be a difficult thing to do and would have been done hundreds of times, but unable to find anything to simply send and retrieve XML to service broker queues....

thanks for your help.. its really needed. I found some links, but they are really vague and often doing select statments in service broker or something like this. I don't want to call any sql, just send and recieve XML on the queues.

any example code that does this, would be really helpfull

kind regards,

SSIS - ERROR OUTPUT In OLE DB DESTINATION

May 16, 2008

Am new to SSIS and developing a component which pulls data from a staging table and drops them into another table in the same database.

Am using a
1) OLE DB Source to get the data from the staging table.
2) OLE DB Destination to insert or push the data into another table of the same database.
3) Script component to get the error rows and to update the staging table column with a flg value.

The rows that throw an error like primary key violation, or any other error should be redirected to the script component and the process should get completed.

The Error Output of the OLE DB Destination doesnt show any columns to be selected for Redirect Row option

The script executes without any error and the records are shown in error path but the records are not updated in the DB.

This is what i have in the script

Public Class ScriptMain

Inherits UserComponent

Dim sqlConn As SqlConnection

Dim sqlCmd As SqlCommand

Dim connMgr As IDTSConnectionManager90
Dim txnIdParam As SqlParameter

Dim errorDescParam As SqlParameter

Public Overrides Sub AcquireConnections(ByVal Transaction As Object)

connMgr = Me.Connections.ErrorConnection

sqlConn = CType(connMgr.AcquireConnection(Nothing), SqlConnection)

End Sub

Public Overrides Sub PreExecute()

sqlCmd = New SqlCommand("UPDATE STG_TRANSACTION SET ERROR_FLG='Y' AND ERROR_DESC=@errorDescParam WHERE TXN_ID=@txnIdParam ")

fueltxnIdParam = New SqlParameter("@txnIdParam", SqlDbType.BigInt)

errorDescParam = New SqlParameter("@errorDescParam", SqlDbType.VarChar)

sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(errorDescParam)

sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(txnIdParam)

End Sub

Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)

sqlCmd.Parameters("@txnIdParam").Value = Row.TXNID

sqlCmd.Parameters("@errorDescParam").Value = Row.ErrorCode

End Sub

End Class

Pleas let me know the solution and any help will be appreciated.

SSIS Output On Sql Agent History

Jan 29, 2007

I have been using SSIS for about two months now and one of the main difficulties I have had is migrating Sql Agent SSIS jobs around environments.

Usually, the SSIS fails because of permissions to file systems, data bases, etc, but until now, I have had to discover these almost by guessing because the job history never game me any useful information. Also, from what I see, the SSIS logs have been unreliable, at best.

What I have done lately is creating Operating System (CmdExec) Steps as part of the job (not SSIS steps) and inserting the output of dtexec.exe into the history.

This seems to give me information that has been really hard to get, otherwise.

My question is (I am no DBA or ETL expert), is this the best way of getting the output of the package when debugging migration issues? Why doesn't the SSIS Steps have a similar feature of outputting useful info to the job history?

Evenly Splitting Output In SSIS

Oct 25, 2006

I would like to split the data stream so that 1 copy can be sent to a lookup task, and the other can be sent as input to another target.

There doesn't seem to be a way to do this in SSIS; but maybe I should be considering other options?

Can anyone suggest a way to copy data to two different sources?

SSIS Error Output -- How Is It Supposed To Work?

May 29, 2006

I€™m importing a Flat file (delimited text) into a sql server database table and trying to trap any import errors in another output Flat file.

I create a Flat File Source task. After tweaking the task, the Source €œError Output€? tab shows all the input columns and all €œError€? and €œTruncation€? values are set to €œRedirect row€?

Next I add a €œSQL Server Destination€? task and connect the Source green arrow to it.

Finally I add a Flat File Destination task (error Output task), connect the Source red arrow to it, click €œOK€? in the €œConfigure Error Output€?, and finally add a connection manager to the Error output task. When I look at the Mappings tab of the Error Output file it shows only three available input columns: €œFlat File Error Output Column€?, ErrorCode, and ErrorColumn

I€™m not sure where they came from but that info is not very useful to me. I want to know which line the error occurred on as well as the bad column(s). If nothing else, I need to see at least the actual row that was bad. How can I get that information?

SSIS Dynamically Naming Output Files

Mar 10, 2006

I've just started using SQL Server 2005 Integration Services and
I've come up against a situation where I need to name output files
dynamically (i.e. based on a timestmap). Looking through this
newsgroup, and other web resources it looks like my only option is to use a Script Task/ActiveX Script Task to rename the file after it has
been created with a generic file name.
I was wondering if there was a different approach or if there was a way to pass in a variable to the file connection manager that I could append to the file name at run-time.

Thanks

SSIS Keeps Doing SQLDUMPER Of Any Type Of Destination Output

Sep 20, 2006

Hello....I have just installed the trial copy of SQL 2005 server and updated with SP1 as well as post SP1 hotfixes.

However, when I try doing sample training material on SSIS, if I try to output to any type of destination output (flat file, excel, access, localhost SQL database) it always does a SQLDUMPER on me and never finishes....I always have to stop the debugger to get out of it.

What pointers can be given to troubleshoot symptoms given above ?

Thanks.

Help Needed In Approach For Error Output In SSIS

Sep 25, 2007

Hi i have a issue i am loading data from a flat file into a relational Database and i am loading the data without dropping the Primary and Foreign Key constraints and i am sending the error rows into a error table for each table. This is becoming large over head is there a way to Load the entire error Row as a single Column in one Error Table.

This is occuring coz the input is being parsed and its dividing into columns,

One approach would be to used Derived Column Transformation and Substring all columns but it makes to writing long substring statement as some tables have 80 columns ,

is there a better way to handle these errors so that they can be looked at and Changes can be made to the Data ,

Also one more question is is there a way to Load in case of Duplicates load only the Recent Row By Date Column.
and send the old row according to Date into Error output.

Please suggest me what approach should i go for
