SSIS Text Qualifier Problem With Bulk Insert - Please Help

Jan 16, 2007

I have created an SSIS package, in my VS2005 solution, that Bulk Inserts a CSV file (see example below)

"100",2006-10-03 00:00:00,"HEX012",1
"101",2006-10-03 00:00:00,"DS00130",1

I have a Bulk Insert Task that uses a Flat File Connection Manager to import my CSV file into my SQL2005 database.

My source CSV file (see example above), has double quatation marks surrounding any text fileds.

I have set the Flat File Connection Manager's 'Text Qualifier' to double quatation marks.

The Bulk Insert works ok, but ignores the Text Qualifier.

My database table is left with the original quatation marks in any text field.

Any help appreciated.

 Regards,

Paul.

Problem With Text Qualifier In SSIS Package

Mar 24, 2007

Hello there,

I have created a package which will copy rows from csv file to SQL database. I have a field into the csv file which contains numeric data. and I am keeping this into the database as numeric too. for example, a column into the csv named "amount" needs to be transfer into the data table where the corresponding column name is "amount" and its data type is numeric and the field can contain null values. I am using the double quote(") text qualifier on to the csv file. Now my problem is, some rows into the csv file contains null values for amount column. for example..lets take a look on my csv file content...

"Name", "Salary"

"Jhon Stuart", "35.66"

"Maria Gree", ""

Notice the second row of the csv where the Salary value has left as an empty string. Now my intention is to import these data into the database and the salary value for Maria should be remain as null. But the package is generating an error for this row. it says..

There was an error with input column "Salary" (61) on input "OleDB Destination Input (47)" . The column status returned was : The value could not be converted because of potential loss of data.

Can any body help me on this? What would be the solution for this? if I modify the row into csv file as following

"Maria Gree", "0.00"

then it works. But I dont want to fill the field with zero into the DB. I want it would be set with NULL value..which make sense.

Any Idea?

Thanks in advance.

Text Qualifier In SSIS Designer For Flat File Source

May 19, 2008

Unlike SQL Server 2000 DTS, SSIS Flat File Connection Manager Editor does not provide available list of Text qualifier,

i tried

-- ""
-- double quote {"}
-- "
--{"}

but none of them worked....!
My file sample looks like this

"Col1","Col2"
"1234","3456"
"3456","1234"

what qualifier should I use then?

Many Thanks,

SSIS Flat File Text Qualifier Only Works On Some Machines!

Jan 3, 2008

I have made a package that reads a text file into a table.

The data in the file is roughly as follows.

1, "a", "b,c,ddddd", 4, "ee", 0 with the column sizes int, 1, 50, int, 2, int

On all the desktop Bids environments and a SQL 2005 instance on windows server 2000 the package runs fine.

on the 2 Windows server 2003/SQL 2005 machines a truncation error occurs on col 5.

What is happening is on these machines the text qualifier is being ignored and column 5 is reading as ddddd instead of ee!

I figured this out by changing all fields to text and seeing what came out of the other end.

It is very, very strange and I've hit a brick wall.

If Anyone has any ideas throw them in the mixer please?

Cheers,

Steve

Can I Insert/Update Large Text Field To Database Without Bulk Insert?

Nov 14, 2007

I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind.  I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while.  Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.

Problems Importing Text Files With Double-quotes As Text Qualifier

Jul 14, 2006

I have text data files from a third party and they use comma as field delimiters and enclose the text for each column in double-quotes. Not a problem for most of the data files until they start sending files where there is " within the column values. SSIS package fails with the error:

The column delimiter for column "Column 1" was not found.

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.Thankspcp

SQL 2012 :: Text Qualifier Inside A Text Qualified Field

Mar 12, 2015

In SQL 2005 if i was trying to insert some data with a text qualifier inside a text qualified field, it would work, for example:

"Name","ID ","Location","","Comany",""House Name" Road",

In SQL 2012, this fails with the error message, cannot find the text qualifer for field.

To get around this, we are having to import the data into a Dirty Data column of aTEMP table, ID, Dirty Data, Clean data - perform multiple updates and change the text qualifier and ensure they are only changed in the right places so we can keep the ". In this example, we changed the text qualifier to PIPES.

After these updates, we then export the data from CLEAN data back out to CSV, then reimport it into the origional destination table with a new text qualifer.

BULK INSERT And Text Fields

Hi,

I am trying to do a bulk insert using a text file that is comma delimited.

In the text file there are fields which are surrounded by quotes and contain commas; these commans should not be considered delimiters.

Is there a way to tell the BULK INSERT statement not to treat these as delimiters?

Bulk Insert Of Text File . Please Help .

Jun 27, 2002

Hi ,

I have imported an event log file from an NT server in a test database . The table has been created automatically with some 10 columns as Col001...Col002 ...and so on till Col0010 .
Now i want to copy the data of the event logs to specific columns . So i created a table with name such as Evnt , date , time , server and evntdescription so that whenever i can execute a simple query like

Select * from tablename where type = 'app' , Server = 'test1 ' .
so that i get all the results for that server 'test1 with type 'application' .

The problem is how do i insert that event log file into the table which i have created with different columns names . So that the data with 'App' should go to column 'type , data with server name should go to the column name server and so on ..

I tried all the was but could not succeed . Can i get some help in this regard please through some stored procedures or through DTS , if its possible .

The server is SQL Server 2000 with SP 1.

Many thanks

Text Qualifier

Jul 16, 2007

Hi,
Using SSIS, I am importing the data of a text file into a sql server table.
After the import, I Can not figure out why the texts inside the sql server have double quotes around them. This is similar to the data inside the text file. For example, the value "Simpsons" appears with the "" as you can see whereas I want it to appear without the "" inside the sql server table.
In the connection manager, the file connection has a text qualifier of <None>

BULK INSERT AccessDenied On Remote Text File.

Feb 5, 2007

OK, Ive read many posts on this problem but have seen no resolution.

Here's the deal. When on the actual SQL box (There's 2 in the cluster) the bulk insert works fine. No errors and the event log on the machine that is hosting the text file shows that the account that SQL runs on has accessed the file. This account is a DOmain account and is in the Local Administrator of the SQL server and the remot box hosting the text file.

Thats great if you want your developers testing and accessing your SQL box as Administrators. We don't work that way. Our developers connect via SQL Management Studio and test ther stuff that way. That's where the problem rears it's ugly head.

When anyone runs a Bulk Insert command that accesses a text file that is on a remote server, they get an "Access Denied". Now, I did a lot of testing and found that when the users executes the Bulk Insert command from the SQL Management studio on their desk top, they connect to the SQL box with their credentials (OK, that's correct right?), SQL then runs the Bulk Isert command which then reaches out to the remote file server but gets the "Access Denied". I check the logs and it shows that "Anonymous" was trying to accesss the file.

Why is Anonymouss coming over as credentials for SQL on a Bulk Insert? I'm no idiot but this sounds like a big crappy bug tha M$ will not fess to. I followed many suggestions, made sure NTFS and Share level permissions were correct (That was the first thing...), made sure the account that was running as SQL Server within the cluster on both nodes in the cluster was the same, that wasn't it, I even created a SPN for SQL to run and automatically register in AD with the credentials that SQL runs as. NOTHING!!!

Has anyone gotten their bulk insert to work when inserting from a file that is NOT local to the SQL box? Any help is appreciated, but putting the text files on the local SQL box IS NOT AN OPTION.

Thanks

Import And Text Qualifier

Sep 3, 2004

Hi

How can I import txt files, in which data sometimes can contain
the letter that is used as text qualifier

Example txt file: 'abc',123, 'john's',12

Here the word -john's- contains the same letter as the text qualifier I have to use.

Can it be true, that this can't be done i MS SQL, when it can be done in MS Excel, Paradox etc..

Text Qualifier Hell

Hi all,

I'm trying to use DTS to import a space delimited file. One column uses " as a text qualifier so I set this in the options. The problem arises when a " shows up between the 2 text qualifiers. It's seen as a set of qualifiers with a 2nd qualifier with no end. I obviously get an error at this point. Anyone have any good advice on how to squash this one?

BULK INSERT From A Text (.csv) File - Read Only Specific Columns.

Apr 23, 2008

I am using Microsoft SQL 2005, I need to do a BULK INSERT from a .csv I just downloaded from paypal. I can't edit some of the columns that are given in the report. I am trying to load specific columns from the file.

bulk insert Orders
FROM 'C:Users*******DesktopDownloadURL123.csv'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
FIRSTROW = 2,

ROWTERMINATOR = ''
)

So where would I state what column names (from row #1 on the .csv file) would be used into what specific column in the table.

I saw this on one of the sites which seemed to guide me towards the answer, but I failed.. here you go, it might help you:

FORMATFILE [ = 'format_file_path' ]

Specifies the full path of a format file. A format file describes the data file that contains stored responses created using the bcp utility on the same table or view. The format file should be used in cases in which:

The data file contains greater or fewer columns than the table or view.

The columns are in a different order.

The column delimiters vary.

There are other changes in the data format. Format files are usually created by using the bcp utility and modified with a text editor as needed. For more information, see bcp Utility.

Bulk Insert In SSIS

Sep 20, 2006

Has anyone else had this problem?

I am using 'OLE DB Destination' task in a data flow. When I select 'Table or view - fast load', check 'Table lock' and 'Check constraints' and run the flow, I get only one row inserted. The data flow edge shows hundreds of thousands of rows flowing to destination and the task completes (turns green).

The problem goes away if I uncheck bulk load (e.g., select 'Table or view').

Is fast load using bulk insert or some internal code?

SSIS Bulk Insert To 2k

Mar 10, 2006

I am using SSIS (2005) to insert records into a sql2k database and getting error:

The selected connection manager uses an earlier version of a SQL Server provider. Bulk insert operations require a connection that uses a SQL Server 2005 Provider.

Using the Bulk Insert Control Flow object is not an option because it requires the file be on the 2000 server and I am not able to create temporary tables on the 2005 server (some nutty security lockdown).

Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.

Transact SQL :: How To Bulk Insert Rows From Text File Into A Wide Table Which Has 1400 Columns

Feb 3, 2010

we can easily load a file into db tables. However, my main concern here is the number of columns in the file. A text file TEXT_1400.txt has 1400 columns. I am unable to load data to my db table using BCP or BULK INSERT commands, as maximum of 1024 columns are allowed per table in SQL Server 2008.

We can still go ahead and create ‘Wide Table’ (a special table that holds up to 30,000 columns.  The maximum size of a wide table row is 8,019 bytes.). But when operating on wide table, BCP/BULK INSERT commands still fail. After few hours of scratching my head over BCP and BULK INSERT, I observed that while inserting BCP/BULK INSERT commands are unable to identify SPARSE columns and skip these columns, which disturbs column mapping and results in data conversion and trancation errors.

Is there any proper way to load this kind of files into the db table?

Export To Flat File - Text Qualifier Problem

Jun 7, 2007

I'm exporting using a query to a flat .txt file. The problem I'm encountering is when I export the data and then open the .txt file into excel some columns cause line breaks to the next row. The columns that are breaking to a new row are varchar fields where the user has entered text into the field with double quotes ".

When I export, I'm using row delimiter {CR}{LF} column delimiter Comma and text qualifier Double Quote (")

Is there a way to prevent this from happening when I export and open the flat file into Excel?

I tried using replace, but I was getting a syntax error in my query. Here is the query without using replace:

SELECT e.session_date, l.lab_no, i.first_name + ' ' + i.last_name AS Teacher,
tt.name, d.district_name, s.school_name, t.title, a.q1 AS Question1, a.q2 AS Question2,
a.q3 AS Question3, a.q4 AS Question4, a.q5 AS Question5, a.q6 AS Question6, a.q7 AS Question7,
a.q8 AS Question8, a.q9 AS Question9, a.q10 AS Question10
FROM evaluation e
LEFT OUTER JOIN training t ON t.id = e.training
LEFT OUTER JOIN lab l ON l.id = e.lab_no
LEFT OUTER JOIN instructor i ON i.id = e.instructor
LEFT OUTER JOIN trainee tt ON tt.id = e.trainee
LEFT OUTER JOIN district d ON d.id = e.district
LEFT OUTER JOIN school s ON s.id = e.school
LEFT OUTER JOIN answers a ON a.id = e.answers
WHERE session_date >= '20070401' AND session_date < '20070501'

I would need to use the replace on columns a.q7, a.q8, a.q9, and a.q10

I tried using another delimiter...pipes (|) and that didn't work? Maybe I was attempting it incorrectly?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Text Qualifier Field In File Connection Manager

Jan 13, 2011

I've discovered an issue with the text qualifier field in the file connection manager when upgrading a SSIS 2005/2008 package from a 32 bit platform to 64 bit platform runninn SQL Server 2008 R2 10.5.1600.

The package will convert <none> in this field to _x003C_none_x003E and therefore any package using the file connection manager i.e. import/export - common tasks on SSIS! will cause problems either with output data or imported data.

Simply replacing _x003C_none_x003E with <none> fixes the issue but ofcourse there can be many packages affected as a result.

Any existing/impending cumulative update for SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard that will fix the problem?double quote delimiters are converted to _x0022_ which I am assume by replacing with a double quote will fix the problem.

Bulk Insert Task COnfusion In SSIS??

Apr 15, 2008

Hi, ALL

I have a confusion with Bulk Insert task for several days.
Here is what Books Online say, which i totally understand---
"The source file that the Bulk Insert task loads can be on the same server as the SQL Server database into which data is inserted, or on a remote server. If the file is on a remote server, you must specify the file name using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) name in the path."

Now, If my Bulk Insert task (within a package) is on one server, say ETL ( so when i run the package, it will run from ETL server); but, My destination table where data will be inserted, is in another server, say PROD. So, My OLEDB connection will be pointing to a remote server .Now, If my text file is on ETL server, do i have to give UNC path?..Or If i have text file on the same server as my destination ( here PROD) do i Have to Give UNC naming?. I found in several places that Bulk insert Task runs on that server where its connections points to.
My scnerio: I have multiple SSIS packages. Now These packages will be on ETL server, but all the databases will be hosted on PROD server. Now for my Bulk Insert , I asked them to keep all flat file on ETL server(where packages will be ). Looks like this will give me a problem later, since all my Destination will be on PROD server, during bulk insert , sql server will go and look for those files on PROD server rather than ETL server? Or i AM confused here?......
Say package.dtsx is On SER1which useses bulk insert tasks..
My OLEDB connection is SERV2 database B and Table T
Now my flat file connection is D:myfilefile.txt

Now when i run this task where does these txt file will be pulled from. Does it pulls from local server (SER1) or does it goes to SERV2 looking for txt file.

I tried several combinations of moving files to different servers, yet i have no conclusions.

Thanks, Kumar
