SSIS Assigned Datatype
Apr 23, 2007
I have a problem with datatype mismatches. In my Data Flow I am reading a Flat File that includes a DateOfBirth which SSIS correctly assigns a datatype of [DT_DATE]. I need to check to see if the record has previously been submitted, so I do a Lookup that uses a SQL statement that combines fields (LastName, Zip & BirthDate) from three different tables. My problem is that SSIS assigns a datatype of [DT_DBTIMESTAMP] to BirthDate, which I can't use because of the mismatch. I have tried every form of re-formating the field in SQL that I can think of, but it still gets assigned that DT. And I'm unaware of a way of changing the DT once SSIS assigns it in the Lookup task.
Help!...very frustrated,
Dave

We have been storing packages in the File System folder. We had noticed that there seemed to be times when re-importing an existing package did not seem to update it properly. We tried deleting the existing package first rather than overwriting it, but to no avail.
Today we noticed that there were two DTS90Packages folders, one on the C drive and one on the D drive. The dates on the files in those folders showed that sometimes the import put the file on one drive, and other times on the other drive.
The MsDtsSrvr.ini.xml file shows this: "<StorePath>..Packages</StorePath> ".
We intend to stored the packages in the msdb database instead in order to work around this problem.
Has anyone else noticed this happening?
Thanks,
Ron

Good afternoon,
I have an issue with an ssis variable datatype.
The scenario is as follows:
I have a stored procedure:
PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_newTransaction]
@sourceSystem varchar(50),
@txOut NUMERIC(18,0) OUTPUT
AS
insert into scn_transaction (sourceSystemName) values(@sourceSystem);
SELECT @txOut = @@identity
Whose purpose is to perform an insert into a table and return me the identity value of the inserted record, which I'll then use throughout the rest of my package. The identity column in the inserted table is numeric(18,0).
I execute the stored proc with the following sql with an OLE DB connection manager:
exec sp_newTransaction ?, ?
The first parameter is a string variable from earlier in the package, and the second is the output parameter. I have the following parameter mappings to the execute sql task:
User:ystxId output numeric 1 -1
User:ourceSys input varchar 0 -1
The proc is correctly called, and the row insesrted, however I get a type conversion error when SSIS attempts to map the return parameter to my package variable... I've tried all sorts of combonations, and can't seem to get it to execute.
At one point I wasn't returning a numeric, but rather an int from the stored proc, and all was well until I went to use the variable in a derived column later in the package, and the type was converted quite incorrectly (a 1 was 77799789080 or some such), indicating a type conversion error likely related to the encoding of the number.
I'd like to keep the datatypes as numeric and make ssis use those - any pointers are greatly appreciated as to what type my package variable should be to allow proper assignment of a sql server numeric type to it.
Thanks much,
B

Hi,
I have a problem with decimal places. My source flat file has value of 22.20 but after inserting to SQL table SSIS is inserting as 22.2000. I am using DT_Numeric datatype in SSIS. I tried changing scale to 2 but it does not work.
The datatype in SQL table is money.

Hi folks,
We have a nice issue here. We are running SQL 2005 Dev edition Service Pack 2 and we are trying to copy the contents of one table in a local sql server database to another table in another database on the same local sql server. We use an oledb source and a sql server destination. The table structure is exactly the same. One column is of the datatype ntext, when we try to load the contents the package will stop with the error:
OnError 11-9-2007 14:38:24 11-9-2007 14:38:24 00:00:00 The attempt to send a row to SQL Server failed with error code 0x80004005.

The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.

An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E07 Description: "Error converting data type DBTYPE_DBTIMESTAMP to datetime.".
OnError 11-9-2007 14:38:26 11-9-2007 14:38:26 00:00:00 A commit failed.
Removing the column from the sql server destination will result in loading the complete table. Using an oledb destination instead of sql server destination fixes the problem. Is this a bug in the SQL server destination component?
Thanks,
Marc

I'm editing an SSIS package. The source column has datatype float and the data is stored like 1,2 instead of 1.2. To change this into a period instead of comma there is a derived column step in the ssis package. The expression in this derived column step to change this goes as:<o:p></o:p> (DT_STR ,32,1 252)(REPLACE((DT_STR,32,1252)SUBSCHAAL_SCORE,",","."))<o:p></o:p>
where SUBSCHAAL_SCORE is the name of the column. As you see the data is converted into a string. I need it to be converted into a numeric datatype (18,6) instead of string/varchar but it must also handle the first issue with changing the comma into a period. <o:p></o:p>

Find data below
ColA ColB

312 21312
34 234
7329 27924
[Code] ....
Using excel connection to load data to SQL Server When I try doing this character data is loading as nulls, I have tried by putting IMEX=1 property in connection string and removing IMEX=1 property from connection string , in both cases it is showing nulls, in the data viewer which i have placed after Excel source. I have also tried using the OPENROWSET which for some reason does not create an adhoc connection. I also tried changing the Datatypes in the advanced editor which again throws error. For some reason SSIS excel connection reads only the first 8 rows and decides a datatype and rest showup NULL.

Hi,
I have to read data from an MDB file into SQL Server. Simple, but I need to place a literal into every row. In my OLE DB Source I would use:
SELECT '001' AS col1, foo, bar FROM Table1
But the problem is that I pass my value for col1 into the package from C# using Managed DTS.
So I set up my OLE DB Source using "SQL command from variable." And I have two variables one to receive the value of for col1 (col1) and one that is an evaluated expression that has a dynamic sql statement (dynSql).
col1 is a String as is dynSql. dynSql looks like this:
"SELECT " + @[col1] + " as col1, foo, bar FROM Table1"
Now as long as I set the value of col1 to '001' that should work. Right? Well not exactly. The destination for col1 in SQL Server is a char( 3 ). But the package makes the col1 column from the source a DT_WSTR. Which causes the famed: "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".
Is there a better solution?
Thanks. Kenneth.

Hello,
I have to develop a package to get some data from a 10g Oracle database and load it to a SQL Server 2005 database.
In my design I used Oracle Provider for OledDB as my source provider following Microsoft recommendations found here : http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332055.aspx
As I have to use a parametrized query against my Oracle database I create a variable with my query that I override at runtime with a script task to update the parameters values.
One of the return column is of numeric datatype.
To handle this known issue with Oracle sources I edited through the advanced editor my Oledb source component to manually correct the precision.
Everything works fine with one of my package.
So I repeat the whole process while designing an other one with the same purposes.
As for the previous one I first unit test every components and everything works. But when running the full package it raised an error code 0x80004005 Error while validating post executing phase of the component (sorry for the poor translation from french to english ...)
I open my dataflow where the component is and found no warnings or errors. I edited through the advanced editor my Oledb source component and found that there's an error on the precision scale of the numeric return column. The message warn me that the precision must be between 1 and 38.
I checked this column and in the "OLE DB Source output / External Columns" the precision is 0 though I previously manually corrected it.
I upadted again for a 18 precision as it is for this column in "OLE DB Source output / Output Columns".
But it never keeps my changes ......
I delete the component and recreate it to force the metadata to be updated but always the same thing, the precision scale for this column in the "OLE DB Source output / External Columns" never keeps my 18 value.
Does someone have any clues to help me ?
Thanks a lot.

Hi All,
Here is a description of the issue I'm facing about decimal datatype conversion from DB2 to SSIS throught Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2.
I first discovered it when I tried to use a LookUp trans. and selected a decimal typed field. I was unable to validate it and clicking the OK button threw the error copied below:
TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
------------------------------
Error at Data Flow Task [DTS.Pipeline]: The "output column "MFIXFRA" (317)" has a value set for length, precision, scale, or code page that is a value other than zero, but the data type requires the value to be zero.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Exception from HRESULT: 0xC0204019 (Microsoft.SqlServer.DTSPipelineWrap)
------------------------------
BUTTONS:
OK
------------------------------
Some workarounds on this issue led me to two other strange behaviours:
- If I create a dataflow task to perform a raw copy of a DB2 table to a brand new table in SQLServer destination (by clicking "new" instead of choosing an existing destination table), generated "create table" script for decimal fields is quite different from source table. For example, a source field declared Dec(15,2) is translated as Dec(29,5), and so on.
- Quite same behaviour if I try to derive a column using as derived column trans. If the source column is a decimal, it's scale and precision are interpreted ramdomly.
Any idea welcome
André

I am moving some code that was created in visual studio 2002 into Visual Web Developer 2005 express edition and am getting a warning on some of my code before compilation.
The warning is "Variable lSqlTransaction is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime". I experienced no problems in vs2002.
The offending line is the rollback command within the exception. If I move it out of the exception it no longer flags the warning, if I move it after the throw statement it now longer flags the warning. Any help appreciated.
Heres the code
Public Shared Sub ExecuteNonQuery(ByVal lSQLCommand As SqlCommand)

'-----------------------------------------------------
'Assign the connection and transaction to our object

Greetings,
We have a standard audit trigger on one of our tables. The trigger type is "after insert, update". The trigger populates four table columns, telling us the login and time the row was created and last updated.
We use replication to synchronize three servers. The trigger specifies "not for replication" on all servers.
The code used to grab the identity and time of the last update is shown below.
LastEditedDate = GETUTCDATE(),
LastEditedBy = SUSER_SNAME()
What I observe is that the LastEditedBy value is sometimes different for the same row on different servers even though the time value is identical. I don't know how to explain this. It looks like the login value is being recalculated during replication while the edit time is not.
For the record, the correct login will be something like "MYDOMjoe" while the incorrect value on another server will read "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE". Do these symptoms ring a bell with anyone?
Thanks,
BCB

I'm trying to convert a column in my source table of datatype varchar(6) to a column of datatype int in my destination. I tried using the Derived Column/Data Conversion transformations but none of them worked. So, I tried using the following C# (credits to the original poster) and getting an error during compilation.
Note: "MyCol" is the Input Column I've specified in the Script Component and "CleanCol" is the Output column I've specified as datatype [DT_I4].
public override void Input0_ProcessInputRow(Input0Buffer Row)
{
int colOut = 0;
if (!Int32.TryParse(Row.MyCol, out colOut))
{
Row.CleanCol_IsNull = true;
} else {
Row.CleanCol = colOut;
}
}
The best overloaded method match for 'int.TryParse(string, out int)' has some invalid arguments
The other expression I've tried was:
ISNULL(MyCol) ? (dt_i4)"" : (dt_i4)MyCol
From the above code, you might have understood that the source field has some blank records as well in the MyCol field.
What is the best possible way to do the conversion from a String to Int or fixing the error from the above.

I need to update a table using a stored procedure that "UPSERTS". In this case, @OfficeId is passed with ParameterDirection.OutputSo when I update I assign the value to OfficeId like this (the office id value is being correctly assigned): SqlParameter OfficeIdParam = new SqlParameter("@OfficeId", SqlDbType.Int, 4); if (_officeId > 0) { OfficeIdParam.Value = _officeId; } OfficeIdParam.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output; The following segment of the stored procedure is throwing an error that the OfficeId does not exist: Update --- @OfficeId int output if not exists (select 1 from ORG_Office where OfficeId=@OfficeId) begin RAISERROR ('OfficeId does not exist in ORG_Office: E002', 16, 1) -- OfficeId does not exist. return -1 end May this approach work, and if the operation turns out to be an Insert I may do this:select @error_code = @@ERROR, @OfficeId= scope_identity() Thank you,jspurlin

Hello,
Is there a way to assign multiple variables to one select statement as in the following example?
DECLARE @FirstName VARCHAR(100)
DECLARE @MiddleName VARCHAR(100)
DECLARE @LastName VARCHAR(100)
@FirstName, @MiddleName, @LastName = SELECT FirstName, MiddleName, LastName FROM USERS WHERE username='UniqueUserName'
I don't like having to use one select statement for each variable I need to pull from a query. This is in reference to a stored procedure.
Thank you!

I have a report where certain columns have values that get repeated, but the client has a rigid requirement for not wanting these columns as groups in the reports (other programs and exports doing specific tasks with those values). In these reports, the "hide duplicates" value is checked, so as to give an aesthetic sense of grouping.
The data for the report, in raw form is:
Value 1
A
Value 1
B
Value 1
C
Value 2
D
Value 2
E
Value 2
F
Value 3
G
Value 3
Hetc...
In its aesthetic form, it is:
Value 1
A
B
C
Value 2
D
E
F
Value 3
G
H
My question is, how can I use RunningValue() to give me the following row numbers based upon those repeated values acting as grouping, since I'm not using formal grouping in the report design?
Value 1
1
A
2
B
3
C
Value 2
1
D
2
E
3
F
Value 3
1
G
2
H
Thanks for any input!

Hello all,
This seems like a simple question but I still haven't been able to get an answer from Microsoft Canada. We're looking at buying 75 device cals to connect to a single instance of SQL Server Standard Edition. Our question is on how those licenses are assigned and/or activated.
Do we need to manually do something for each station or is it an automated process done the first time a station connects to the server? We also wat to understand what happens when a workstation dies and is replaced by another one. Do you have to do something on the server to transfer the license to the new station ?
In other words, when using device cals (and/or user cals), do you have to do any type of license management or is it all transparent ?

At our site, we page DBAs whenever an alert with a severity of 20 or greater is raised. This never was an issue until SQL Server 2005. Now every SSPI error is paged since it is a severity 20. I don't believe the errors are severe enough to qualify an assignment of 20. Anybody else have any thoughts on this?
Thanks.

We have SELECT INTO queries that use the IDENTITY function to assign a sequential row number to a result set based upon a sort order. This has been helpful in SQL Server 2000 for median determination. It appears, however, that in SQL Server 2005, the row numbers are not assigned sequentially, or maybe they are assigned before the sort order is applied.
Can anyone verify whether the IDENTITY function has changed behavior between 2000 and 2005? We would prefer not to have to make changes to existing queries. Thank you.
(BTW, the workaround we found so far is to put the initial SELECT...ORDER BY in a subquery, but then we had to include a phrase like TOP 10000000 to pass syntax check. Is there a better way?)

I restored a sql server database today. There is a problem though. In SQL server, right next to the name of the database are the words "Restricted User". Their seem to be some limitations on my access to this database now as I am not able to run some of my C# code against the database. How can I fix this in SQL server so that I am not a Restriced user.
Example of what I am talking about. In SQL server my database is named Gorlaz. Just to the left of this is a yellow Icon that represents the database "Gorlaz". For illustration purposes I will use the character "$" to substitute for the yellow database icon. So this is how it reads in SQL server management studio.

Can anyone help me with this? The objective is to allow an application user (with db_datareader & db_datawriter database roles assigned) to be able to create tables in the assigned schema (dbo) via a new role.
-- Create User
use master
go
create login DBA with password='xx', CHECK_EXPIRATION=ON, CHECK_POLICY=ON
use AdventureWorks
go
create user dba from login DBA
alter user dba with DEFAULT_SCHEMA=dbo
go
-- Create Role
use AdventureWorks
go
create role sp_ddl_role AUTHORIZATION dbo
grant CREATE TABLE to sp_ddl_role
-- assign user to Role
use AdventureWorks
go
exec sp_addrolemember sp_ddl_role, dba
go
-- Create Table statement then run with following error
Error:
Msg 2760, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The specified schema name "dbo" either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it.
Remedy: Grant ALTER on schema::dbo to sp_ddl_role
My problem is that I want to restrict user permissions via this role to just the CREATE TABLE and granting ALTER on a SCHEMA will open up a whole lot more permissions from a security standpoint.
Question: How do I restirct this role to just the CREATE TABLE within a SCHEMA?

Hello (help),
In SQL2000, when the Guest account was assigned into a role, such as db_datareader, then querying across databases worked just fine.
Specifically:
I have a Report Writer application that connects to the SQL Server with a login (ReportRunner) that actually has very limited permissions on a database.
The connection is then set (sp_setapprole) to use an Application role (App_RR) that has the necessary permissions.
The report-writer app calls a Stored Procedure that gathers data from several other databases (on the same SQL instance).
In SQL 2000, accessing these other databases was done through Guest - we assigned Guest to the db_datareader role. All worked fine.
We've just upgraded to SQL2005: reports started failing. It seems that although guest is assigned to the db_datareader role, the permissions for Guest don't allow selecting from tables via the db_datareader role: we've had to GRANT SELECT TO Guest specifically on the tables necessary for the report.
Is anyone aware of a design change withing SQL Server such that the Guest principal's roles are disregarded when assessing permission? Is there a new and better way to structure the permissions?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi:
When I restore DB from testing to production, we want to remove extra access rights granted to public group. Is there a simple way to query to find out for which objects (table, view, sp, fn) that public group were granted select, delete, update insert, or execute rights?
My objective is to write a sp to remove all user assigned rights to public group (role), but not to deny any rights. How to do it?
Any suggestion will be appreciated.

there a way to find a list of Windows User accounts that are directly

I could put work in to CLR programming or using a Linked Server to

I'll be looking into this further myself anyway and posting an answer
