SSIS Book By Kirk Haselden
Jun 12, 2007
Hi everyone. This is my first post. I have been going through Kirk Haselden's book - teaching myself SSIS. I like it so far. I have a question about some language used by Kirk that I want to check with the community. He talks about "Data Flow Versus Workflow" in the book (see page 110 if you have the book) but I dont recall reading his definition of workflow? Is he just referiing to "control flow" as "workflow"? I cant think of what else he might mean by workflow.

Any idea where the quickest place to get Kirk Haselden's new book will be. I've seen a few different dates for the relaase. Amazon has 7/21, but they have fooled me before, getting books to me much later than I could have gotten the elsewhere.
Is there anyone I can bribe to get it now?
I love IS - the complicated stuff is simple and intuitive but the details are driving me nuts. Constant little errors on data types and stuff without any documentation. I'm spending hours and hours figuring these things out by trial and error.
Also a thank you to Kirk for his posts to the forum. I've assembled them in a list and have been reading through them. Very helpful.

Hello, I would love to know where people are discussing the book Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services book by Kirk Hasleden.
I'm on page 41 and I'm getting an error with the example in the "SELECT "2004" FROM Sales.vSalesPersonSalesByFiscalYears"
part because there is not a table called Sales.vSalesPersonSalesByFiscalYears in the AdventureWorks database.
Thank youo

I am new to SQL2005 and have been given the task of writing some SSIS packages to import some CSV files.
I need to cleans the data as it is imported from my CSV files before it reaches my SQL DB.
I am currently Googling the internet to discover how to do this.
Can anyone recommend a good SSIS book?
I am a C# developer, so a book that has lots of SSIS C# examples would be good.
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Paul.

the book "microsoft sql server 2005 integration services" by kirk haselden claims you can download examples and source code at www.samspublishing.com
er no
what happens is this
go to the site
look for the 'downloads' link
see there isn't one
search for authors
h etc.... lose a few minutes of your life
find the book
yay
it forces you to sign up for an account in order to get the samples - outrageous
prepare for endless spam from sams
sign up
click on download samples
find the configedit folder
load into vs
run it
it doesn't work!!
thanks

one could argue that ssis should have a config editor supplied with it, instead of having to go into notepad

We are getting prepared to move from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. We have a lot of DTS's that will need to be converted to SSIS. Can you recommend a really good reference book or text book on SSIS that will help us out both with DTS conversions as well as SSIS development in general.
thanks

I am looking for feedback, I am an evil DBA comfortable with DTS and currently using SSIS, but looking to use SSIS to it full potential. I am in serious need of a book that details VB or C#.
I do not want to use the old methods from 2000. Appreciate any suggestions.
Currently have WROX 'Professional SQL Server 2005 Integration Services', but alas limited VB use. I have a need to understand the background operations taht only VB or C# could provide.

I am currently redirecting lookup failures into error tables with ErrorCode and ErrorColumn. It works fine until I want to transfer data into the archived database. The SSIS pacakage generate by SQL Exporting tool is throwing an "duplicate name of 'output column ErrorCode and ErrorColumn" error. This is caused by oledb source error output. The error output automatically add ErrorCode and ErrorColumn to the error output selection and not happy with it.
I think the question is down to "How to importing/exporting data when table contains ErrorCode or ErrorColumn column?"

For those of us struggling with DTS, you've probably all seen
Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS
Mark Chaffin, Brian Knight, and Todd Robinson
WROX
ISBN 1-861004-41-9
This is brand new:
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS
Timothy Peterson
SAMS
ISBN 0-672-32011-8
I have both and they're both worth owning.
I also just found a reference to the following, but I haven't seen it so I count vouch for it. (I also wonder why I haven't stumbled across it previously...)
Professional SQL Server 7.0 Development Using SQL-DMO, SQL-NA and DTS
Frank Miller & Rachelle Reese
WROX
ISBN 1861002807

I really like to pass my books on, for small price to anyone who could use them, since I no longer need 'em. I've got one , the SQL 2000 Administrator's Companion. Please take a look, I put it on ebay:

Ok, look. I could sit here and ask about 1,000 different queries that I would like to have. I'd much rather prefer to find it on my own however. Could someone please recommend a book that will tell me all I need to know about performing different kinds of queries? I have limited Mysql, JavaDB experience. A beginner compared to most of you. Thx in advance for any replies.

Hi All,
I am new to SQL Server but have been doing database programming since last 3 years. I recently attended MOC (Microsfot Official Curriculum) training on SQL Server and have started to use at my company. I am comfortable with SQL but want to dig deeper into T-SQL side. I searched on the Internet but not many good books available in that either they are ranked very low or are very old i.e. written around 1999/2000 or covers SQL Server 2000 as a whole. Can anybody suggest me any T-SQL book which was written recently and focuses purely or majorly on T-SQL?
Thanks to all for your time and advice in advance.

I've been a SQL Server dba for 5 or 6 years now. With the upcoming release (eventually, I'm sure) of Yukon/SQL2005, I've read that it's important for DBA's to pick up one of the .NET languages - I've figured, I'll try to learn VB.NET - I've had a little exposure to it, and can usually figure out what's going on in VB code I've read - however, I seriously doubt I could write anything in it from scratch - I want to learn it in a bad way - can you all recommend any self-paced books that will walk me thru it? I've never had any formal training with it, don't know a class from a DLL....Thanks in advance for your help!!
