Should I be able to use a SQL Server Compact Edition sdf file as the data source for the SSIS Import and Export Wizard?
When I select the .net Framework Provider for compact Edition from the data source drop down, I get a message box with "An error occured which the SSIS Wizard was not prepared to handle. We have a user with a sdf file that will no longer sync, so we wanted to get her data from sdf file tables into SQL Server tables quickly and easily. Since the SSIS wizard wouldn't work with the sdf data source, we copied SQL Server Mgmt Studio query results into an Excel spreadsheet via the Clipboard, them imported those records with SSIS. But we need a repeatable process in case this happens in the future.
We tried to reinitialize her merge replication subscription with SQL Server Mgmt studio, and with C# code, but none of that would work.
How many MS data provider options are available for SQL Server compact edition? I see ".Net Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition" in the SSIS data source drop down, but shouldn't I also see an OLE-DB Provider for SQL Server Compact Edition?
This is all on my XP workstation where I can successfully write C# code for SQL Server Compact data access with Assembly = System.Data.SqlServerCe = C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEPublicAssembliesSystem.Data.SqlServerCe.dll. So I think I have the proper tools installed.

we've got a SQL Server 2005 which replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.5. Every 10 to 20 synchronisations we're getting the error mentioned above. A Soft reset of the device helps to make the synchronization working again.
Why is this error happening and how can we resolve this?
BTW, we've also running system that replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.0 without having this problems.

I'm noticed that in sql server 2005 express edition do not have import/export tools which is found in sql server 2000. Is it not supported only in this version or I have to upgrade my sql to other version to have this facility?

Everything was fine till last night, when after creating my tables, I needed to populate them. I tried to find the Import and Export Data Wizard that SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 used to have, but great was my surprise when I found - in this forum - a post that said that it's not available in the Express Edition.
I'll have to move back in time (what I hate) to remember the way BCP worked. Can somebody post some examples to not start from zero ? Does anybody know a third party visual tool that can import/export data from text files to a SQL Server DB via ODBC ?
What's the reason it was not included in the EE ?

Im trying to create a DTS package to import an Excel spreadsheet in to SQL Server 2005 and them Export to a text file. I have successfully imported the data using the import/export wizard, but I am unsure how to add the step that exports the data into a text file. Any ideas or links to a resource that may help me?

Firstly, I hope this question isn't asked too frequently but I found no existing reference to this situation....
I had a bunch of stored procedures in SQL 2k which imported and exported data to and from flat files using TEXTPTR, READTEXT, UPDATETEXT etc... The flat files were continuously changing so the filepath was a parameter for the sp.
The reason I used the pointer to flat files is because I didn't want to
load the files in memory before commiting them ie. with TEXTPTR and
UPDATETEXT I can import a 1Gb binary file 80000 bytes at a time and
keep (precious) memory usage down.
I was accessing this procs from a C# application.
Since these methods are going to be phased out by the guys at MS what is the best way of importing/exporting very large binary files in SQL 2005?
As far as I can tell SSIS requires a Flat File Source Manager object which needs a static filepath - not good.

I used the SSIS import/export wizard to create a single data flow of about a dozen source/destination tables. The tables however have some foreign key constraints between them. Executing the wizard-created package causes foreign key violations. Is there a way to control the order of the table load process within a single data flow? Or is the preferred way to set up several data flows that are ordered via the control flow tab?

I am a newbe at MS SQL 2005, so if this has already been answered elsewhere, please just point me in the right direction.
I have successfully used the Import/Export wizard in "execute immediate" mode to import a table from Oracle 10g to MS SQL 2005. Works like a charm, but when I take the saved pacakge (saved as a *.dtsx server side file) - with no changes to the package and execute it from the either the "dos" prompt or from Windows explorer it fails at the login to Oracle step. Yet when I check the package's "Connection Managers" source connection, all the settings, user-ids and passwords look fine. The package does indeed execute, but I receive an ORA-01017:invalid username/password within the trace file of the package, but nothing has been changed from the Import/Export wizard which ran beatifully, thus verifying the appropriate acccess rights to Oracle.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Its my first time trying to set up a SSIS job using the import/export wizard to export the results of a query into an excel file.
i am using sql server 2005, windows XP SP2.
In the last step in the excel destination editor, in the connection manager when i am trying to select the excel file to write into i am getting this error.
'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 ' provider is not registered on the local machine.
I have set up the excel connection manager. i have changed the properties of the project to set
the Run64BitRuntime to false.
please let me know if there is anything else i need to do to fix this.

I'm just beginning to use SSIS (bracing for a steep learning curve due to lack of helpful documentation) and am starting out trying use the Import and Export Wizard. On the "Choose a Data Source" page there is a dropdown for the Data Source. I see a list of possible data providers, but not one of "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC drivers," which is the one I wanted to use because I'm trying to connect to an obscure database. So I figured that I need to use ".Net Framework Data Provider for Odbc." Unfortunately, regardless of what I enter for the Connection string or the Dsn or the Driver I invariably get an error, although it's somewhat dependent on that I have entered for those three items.
Either this (when I type in a DSN)

or this (if I enter a full connection string and a driver)

Problem Creating the Compact Database:
Open 2008 Management Studio
From menu choose File | Connect Object Explorer...
Choose SQL Server Compact Edition as the Server type.
Choose <New Database...> as the Database file.
Browse to folder where file will be created (C:MyDatabase#1.sdf was used in my example)
Leave all other field as default selections OR make changes, either way it does not work.
Click OK.
At this point the OK button just becomes disabled and nothing happens.

Open 2008 Management Studio

Choose <Browse for more...> as the Database file and locate a ".sdf" file that I created using VS2008.

Running SQL 2008. Trying to copy data from one table into another table using SSIS Import/Export Wizard. Now, when I do a straight "Copy data from one or more tables or views", no problems. But when I use the "Write a query to specify the data to transfer", it will not let me get anywhere.
My source table has a field that is setup as "time". It has data, and no problems with the field. I even replicated my destination table structure exactly. But when I try to use the Import & Export wizard, for that one field I get an error stating the source field is unknown and it is labeled as "-1" instead of "time".
I found a couple of of workarounds. One is to cast the source field "time" as "datetime", and then end up with a "datetime2" field in the destination table. Works, but not what I want to store in that field. Second workaround is to use TSQL and use a "INSERT INTO...SELECT...FROM..WHERE.." statement. This works, and gives me the desired results with all data types being same in source and destination, but is a slight pain in the rear end.
I just want the Import & Export wizard to work. It should work. Why doesn't it know what "time" is? I even checked the MSSQLToSSIS10.XML mapping file the wizard is using. This is what it has for "time":

I built a packaage in SSIS with the import/export utility. It created a Package.dtsx and Package1.dtsx. Both of these files seem to be XML files. I want to understand how these files work. For example, in the package I built I had about 80 tables exporting and importing data. Some of them I want to allow the identiy insert and delete the rows first. Others I want to append the data. How can I find the code or settings that does this? Or where can I find the options on the gui interface to change these settings. When I search the code I can't even find a some of the tables that are being transferred.

I've been struggling with this the last couple days and finally decided to import the dBase III file into Access and then import that into SQL Server 2005. Imagine my surprise when I discovered this was the current recommended method.

I have two question about SQL compact edition (SQLCE) (.sdf) and SQL Express edition (SQLED) (.mdf).
I have been testing SQLED and have many tables and data in it.
I want know to test SQLCD and hopefully be able to communicate with the SQLED.
For this reason I was wondering the following:
1. IIs it possible to move all the tables and it constratints into the SQLCE from the SQED ?
2. Another possibility I was thinking about was to use some tables in the SQLED in the SQLCE and move data between these two databases through RDA .
However, does this two versions aloud this kind of communciation...between them....?

I recently downloaded the sql mobile edition, and then I found out about the compact edition.
I understand that these are relational lite version of sql server that can run on mobile devices.
However, what is the difference between the CF and mobile edition? Why should I choice one over the other?
I have just heard about sql everywhere, seems there are all these edtions and how would you choice the right tool for the right job?

there are some limitations in SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition - e.g. there is no TRUNCATE TABLE statement, the UPDATE .. FROM clause is not allowed etc. Are these limitations in Compact Edition too? Is T-SQL in these editions functionally equal or different? Is there any comparison of T-SQL features in both editions?
I'm currently looking at adding a database to my company's WinCE 4.2 -based device, running applications coded with embedded CE 4.0. We want to start tracking potentially large quantities of user data (10K-30K 500 byte records) and are looking at a database engine to support this. The database would reside on the device although we would potentially dump the data from the devices to a central workstation that would be used to pull reports about the data across multiple devices. SQL Server Compact Edition sounds like a possible solution, but I'm unclear if it's supported on CE 4.2 or how to install it if it is. It's clearly supported on CE 5.0, but it may be a while before we upgrade to CE 5.0 or 6.0. I've seen references that say that SQL Server Compact Edition is the same as SQL Server Mobile Edition, and references that Mobile Edition is supported on CE 4.2, but I'm unclear if I can install and use SQL Server Compact Edition on CE 4.2 or if I'm on a wild goose chase. If not, can I use SQL Server Mobile Edition and migrate to SQL Server Compact Edition when we upgrade CE to 5.0 or 6.0? If not Mobile Edition, what about Microsoft SQL Server CE 2.0? Is that going too far back in the archives?

I am trying to simplify a query given to me by one of my collegues written using the query designer of Access. Looking at the query there seem to be some syntax differences, so to see if this was the case I thought I would import the database to my SQL Server Developer edition.
I tried to start the wizard from within SQL Server Management Studio Express as shown in one of the articles on MSDN which did not work, but the manual method also suggested did work.
Trouble is that it gets most of the way through the import until it spews forth the following error messages:

There does not seem to be any method of specifying a number of sessions, so I don't see how to get round the problem.

I am writing an application that is designed for the desktop, or small group (3 or less) desktops. The application is being deployed using the Cassini web server as a complete "embedded" solution. I wanted to use SQL Server Compact because of its small footprint and because of the synchronization capabilities with SQLServer. Also, it is very easy to deploy vs. SQL Server Express. The idea behind this APP is that someone might use it locally and then decide to subscribe to the service and then connect the same application to a web services application.
That being said, and with knowledge of Microsoft's stance on SQL Compact under ASP.NET, I have most everything working and it works great except for one thing. When I add a SQLDataSource to the page and set the connection string to my file and the DataProvider to System.Data.SqlServerCe and then bind a data grid to the SQLDataSource, it runs fine on my development machine, but when I deploy to my clean test machine, I get an error when the page loads saying:
Unable to find the requested .Net Framework Data Provider. It may not be installed.
I can create a dataset in code (in fact,in several other places I do) and it works fine. It is just the SQLDataSource(s) that are throwing this error. I have a copy of System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll in the bin folder and I have all of the compact DLL's in the bin folder as well. I can't figure out what I need to do. I also have a reference to the System.Data.SqlServerCe in the web.config file.
Can anyone help?
I am using SQL Server Compact Edition under ASP.NET. I am aware of the limitations and warnings from Microsoft for SSCE under ASP.NET, but this app is designed as a desktop deployed ASP.NET application running under the Cassini web browser. I wanted to use SQL Server Compact because of the RDA capabilities with SQL Server without the overhead of installing SQL Server Express. There would be 1-3 users at most running the application. SSCE seemed to make the most sense.
That being said, I have everything working fine except for this. I have added several SQLDataSource controls to several web forms and then I have GridViews bound to these controls. I like using the controls because of the built in sorting, grouping and updating I can do. When I run this on my development machine, it runs fine. When I move to one of my clean test machines and install the app, the SQLDataSouce controls throw the following error:

I have the System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll in the bin folder along with all of the files from the the SQLServer Compact 3.1 install, a reference to it in the web.config file etc. In fact, I have several other database related datasets and tableadapters that are created throughout the application and they all work fine and can access and display data from my sdf file. It seems to only be with the SQLDataSource controls.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to start an application in C# with visual Studio 2008 and I want to connect it to a SQL CE 3.5 Database (local .sdf file).
I only found samples or How-to guides that use the wizard to add the datasource and the way dragging the dataset to the form. All things binded to the database where you don't have to do coding.
I don't want to have the binding navigator bar, I just want to use text box, date picker and buttons and Save that to the database myself. That way I think it will be more easy for me to validate or manipulate data before the insertion in the DB.
Some time ago a make an ASP.net that was doing same kind of thing with an Access DB...

Hi all.
We are developing a desktop windows forms app that uses tha database as storage for application configuration.
It may be used by one user locally OR used locally by multiple but sharing the database.
Now, i'm really sure that I have read that sharing the .sdf file over a network is supported and thus have started developing against the 3.5 compact db (sdf file).
But when testing this scenario we get a message that sharing over network is not supported. I'm really surprised and frankly puzzled since I know I have read about this being supported.
So, can someone more into this subject exlpain to this to me? Is it supported, and if not, should we use the express version instead?
Also, if we have to change strategy, is there an easy migration path regarding development (app. is not even in beta stage so no migrations will be necessary with customers.).
Thankful for any help since this might cause a lot of extra work...
If this leads down the synchronization path, could someone please explain how this is set up. Is it one "master" that acts as a publisher?
If we would like to have the solution where several users access the same db-file (be it sdf or mdf), do we have any choice here?
