SSMS Performing Slow Over Remote Connection?
Mar 25, 2013
One of the instance is hosted in a cluster node with 128GB of ram and 80 processors allocated to this instance...And last week, we had an issue with temp DB as it was full.We increased the drive space over the weekend.
Now whenever we connect this instance from other server through remote SSMS, we see, refreshing the object including connecting to this instance is very very slow...It takes more than 10 sec. Initially this was not the case. Even hear from end user that the application is performing gradually slow.
I check the network, fregmentation, settings across this instance, and all looks good.

I am trying to a simple insert statement from a remote applicationagainst a sql server 2005 database. To fix the problem I was having,I had to grant the Login I was using the role of sysadmin. However Idon't want this user to have that kind of control, what would be thebest role to allow the user full access(including remoting) to onlyone particular database?

Using SSMS 2012, we are experiencing extremely slow response times when opening SQL job steps to edit and also deploying SSIS Pkg's. Sysadmins have no problem. Users in the ssis_admin role have no problem. It's the rest of the users who have issues.

I recent installed a named instance of SSRS 2005 on a remote server. The server has a side by side install of SSRS 2000 and SSRS 2005, with the SSRS 2005 being a named instance. The server also has SSL and MS Sharepoint Portal Server installed.
When I try and connect to the SSRS 2005 instance with my client install of Mangement Studio, I get the error message:
"The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish a trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. (System.Web.Services)
Additional Information: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure. (System)."
Obviously, this is a SLL issue, but, not being a security guru, I have no clue on how to fix this. I do know the certificate is valid, not expired and properly working. Both installs of SSRS are set up using the SSL certificate. Also, I am not connecting to SSIS with Management Studio, as I heard there is a bug connecting to both SSRS and SSIS at the same time.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!!
Jeff

I have installed a SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition instance with SSIS on Window Server 2003 x64. From my PC, I am able to connect to the Integration Services on the server using Windows Authentication but not with a local SQL login - and the option to change authentication methods is greyed out.
Is it possible to remotely connect to SSIS using a SQL login rather than a Windows login? If so, any ideas or references for configuring it as such?
Thanks.

I'm using ssms 2014, but got the same problem with 2012. I use ssms almost entirely on remote desktop sessions ( Windows 7, Server 2008R2, Server 2012 ). It may be related to having filtered job activity monitor windows open for hours, but about once per day ssms fails, and has to restart. Upon resuming usually only one of several queries is restored.

I have a New default instance of SQL2k5 installed and i am trying to setup access to the this via a vpn.
The VPN is setup and allows access to the server and can T/S to the server and perform everything all ok.
When trying to connect over the VPN with SSMS installed on my laptop I am able to connect using Windows authentication only by using Named Pipes. To accomplish this i perform a Net Use ..... and everything works fine.
However if i specify in the connection tab to use TCP/IP it fails with an unknown username or password. The Event Viewer on the server shows this and for what ever reason the username / pwd is that of my laptop and not of the account used in the VPN setup or the net use.
Also if i try to connect to the SQL Server over the VPN using VS 2005 it also gives the same issue.
I need to get this sorted so that TCP is able to be used.
Thx in advance

I used the selfssl.exe tool to generate a certificate on my db server, successfully added to Personal Certificates in MMC, added R/W permissions for the service account to the cert, selected the new certificate in the protocols for mssql and restarted the service. So far so good, however when trying to connect from SSMS with encryption check box checked I get the following error:
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -2146893019)
The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.
When I look in MMC, the only intended purpose for the certificate is "Server authentication" and I'm not able to add "Client authentication". Does selfssl.exe not support client authentication?

HiI'm going insane.I have a club starter kit on my local server which is working fine.I have migrated the database to my remote host and seems to have transfered ok.For a brief period I was able to connect to the database remotely, but now I cannot I get the following, even though SQL Server Surface Area Config is set to accept remote connections. An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)This is my connection string;<add name="ClubSiteDB" connectionString="Data Source=xx.xxx.xx.xx,xxxx; Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=tets; User ID=sqladminbob;Password=sqlbob4398;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient="/>I hav also tried to use aspnet_regsql.exe to add the remote provider but I get the same message. Hello.I have a slow response with a system that I am setting up. The OS isWin 2000 Server with SQL Server 2000. My first execution of the SQLprocedure is slow (about 40 seconds), while the second execution isfaster (approx. 3 seconds and what I expect).Using query analyser I can leave the window up and come back ( aftersay 10 minutes ) and my next response is will be slow (and fasterstraight after this). The query itself is the "TOP 10" rows from a table of a remote DB (MSDE2000 - NT station). This is similar to;---------------------DECLARE @SelectRowsFromRemoteDB NVARCHAR(400)SET @SelectRowsFromRemoteDB = "SELCT a.* FROM OPENROWSET('SQLOLEDB', 'Remote', ....) a"EXEC sp_executesql @SelectRowsFromRemoteDB---------------------The CPU usage goes high (with Task Manager), but oddly the task withmost usage is the "Idle Process".Please help with an answeror a good starting point to known where the resources are being used.Regards JC.....

Hi,
I have succesfully created a Stored Procedure which runs under 2 seconds locally.
However when i run the same proc from another machine in the LAN, the response times vary from 5 sec to over 40 Secs and even occassionally times out.
My server is SQL 2005 Dev Edition (32 Bit) running on a Dual Core Box with 2GB memory.
Any Ideas why this would be happening?

Hi,
Just wondering if anybody has any idea why when using RS 2005, remote catalog, asp.net 2.0 and using the .net 2.0 reportviewer control on an aspx page it seem to run 15 - 20 times slower than if we use a local catalog. The two machine in the remote catalog setup have a 2gb network connect between them, the doesn't apear to be any network load on either machine.
Any ideas will be greatfully received.
Cheers

suddenly I'm getting a connect to server error dialogue box that says...
Cannot connect to serverinstance name
Additional information
The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt)
...when trying to connect to RS2005 Server in Management Studio. I can reach Reporting Manager thru IE and run my reports.
Is it possible that my setting IIS to basic authentication (and turning off Windows Integrated) might be preventing me from connecting in MS, perhaps because MS has to go thru the RS service and doesnt know what basic auth is?
I'm temporarily unable to set IIS back to Windows Auth cuz the server is being used by users to test reports.

connecting to a SQL Server Instance. I have a SQL server DB on a server having an Instance not running on the default port. Let's say ServerAInstanceA has the services exposed on Port 12345. When I'm trying to connect to ServerAInstanceA without specifying the port number, while I can connect from one client machine (ClientA), I am unable to connect from a different client machine (ClientB).On a side note, when I provide the port number, I can connect both from clients A and B. My question is, when I do not provide the port number, why is one client machine able to connect while the other isn't?

In an ASP, I have a dynamically created SQL statement that amounts to "SELECT * FROM Server1.myDB.dbo.myTable WHERE Col1 = 1" (Col1 is the table's primary key). It returns the data immediately when executed.
However, when the same record is updated with "UPDATE Server1.myDB.dbo.myTable SET Comments = 'blah blah blah' WHERE Col1 = 1", the page times out before the query can complete.
I watched the program in Profiler, and I saw on the update that sp_cursorfetch was being executed as an RPC once per each row in the table. In a table of 78000 records, the timeout occurs well before the last record is fetched, and the update bombs.
I can run the same statements in Query Analyzer from a linked server and have the same results. The execution plan shows that a Remote Query is occurring on the select that returns 1 row, and a Remote Scan is taking place on the update scanning 78000 rows (I guess this is where all the sp_cursorfetch calls are happening...?).
How can I prevent the Remote Scan? How can I prevent the execution of the RPC sp_cursorfetch for each row in the remote table?
Thank you!

I'm getting "Access denied" error when I try to connect to SSIS from my desktop (Database Engine is fine). I'm a member of sysadmin within SQL, as well as an administrator on the server. I don't have any problem when I log on to the server directly via Remote Desktop and open SSIS.
I went into the surface area config tool, and I see that Database Engine and Analysis Services both expand and have a sub tabs to enable Services and Remote Connections, but Integration Services does not expand to a Remote Connections option, just Services. We're running MSDN Enterprise edition.
Does it matter if all the SQL services are using "Local System" for the logon ? I use an administrative logon on my SQL2000 boxes, and was fiddling with them on the 2005 box yesterday, but it seemed to cause more problems, so they are all Local System for now.
Am I missing something obvious ?

Hi. I'm (very) new to SQL Server. I have run into what seems to be a very common problem, judging by the number of Google hits, but it's not actually in the FAQs here, as far as I can see.
Situation
I installed SQL Server Express with Advanced Services 2005 on my Windows XP Pro laptop, using (with one exception) the default install. The exception was to put the data files on a separate partition (D: ) where I have more free space.
SQL Server Management Studio Express connects happily, and I set up a single data import table.
Issue: bcp Fails to connect to default local instance
I initially tried bcp in output mode, prior to working in earnest on importing my data. However the command line-
bcp MyDatabaseName.dbo.UserProfile out UserProfile.txt -T -c
Fails with the error-
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
As I understand it, the local instance of SSE is the default, and should use a local (shared memory?) connection. This seems to work for Management Studion Express, but not bcp.
While investigating this problem, I tried enabling remote connections (all types) through the Surface Area Configuration wizard, and found that remote connections using either of:
bcp eSpacePh1.dbo.UserProfile out UserProfile.txt -T -c -S localhostsqlexpress
bcp eSpacePh1.dbo.UserProfile out UserProfile.txt -T -c -S mycomputernamesqlexpress
both work ok.
Extra Info
When starting Management Studio Express, it says something like "Configuring environment for the first time". However it says this every time it is started, not just the first run after installation, does this indicate some configuration data is not being successfully stored?
I have found threads that look similar to my issue-
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=836670&SiteID=1
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3351349&SiteID=1
However these do not relate directly to bcp, and to be honest my knowledge of SSE is slender enough at this stage that i'm unsure if there are really relevant.
Any hints on how to proceed much appreciated.
Regards: Colin E.

Hello,
We have Sql Server installed on the Windows 2000 machine.
There are 2 databases that the employees access on it.
When the machine is just started, there are no problems but after some time the connections get really really slow and then eventually become impossible to connect. We did not have this problem before until we had a computer crash and then Sql server was installed on a new machine. The problems started here. We had 64mb of ram and we put in another 64mb thinking this would solve it but it did not.
On the task manager the cpu percentage stays constant at 100% and the virtual memory increases and increases very slowly until it has reached it's maximum (which is 600mb).
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much,
Kostas

Here is the configuration we have at our site:
64 bit virtual server - Clustered 64-bit SQL Server 2005 Standard SP2 listening on port 1433.
32 bit virtual server - 32-bit application that connects to above SQL Server 2005 via standard OLEDB driver installed with windows (String utilized: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=applicationdb;Data Source=ServerInstanceName).
We are experiencing a slow reponse of 45 sec to more than a minute on a simple select statement on a table having 5000 rows.
The same select statement on the Server locally in Studio returns results back in 2 seconds or less. But from Stuido on any other desktop (remote) it takes 45 secs or more. Same slow response is seen by the application which is using OLEDB.
I've looked into some of the Server parameters but didn't find any clues.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just found out the response time of open a connection or execute a SQL command over VPN is very slow. It takes around 150ms for each round trip. If the same program run on LAN, it takes less than 1ms. I understand that VPN may have encryption and thus have a bit delay. However, if the delay happens whethever I make a SQL call, it will be unacceptable. Is there anything that I have missed out? If the delay occurs once only, it will be still great. (I think this is the point of connection pooling. Right?) However, it's really bad if the delay occurs each time I call SQL. Please help!

I have a desktop and a laptop that connect to a SQL Server machine on our network. From the desktop when I run a particular query it takes 20 sec. to return 71000 rows. From the laptop it takes 5 seconds to return the same results.
Both machines are running Windows XP Pro Sp2. I checked with others that I work with, and their results mirror my laptop (about 5 sec.). I checked the Client Network settings, ODBC drivers, etc. All are the same between the two machines.
I have a VFP app that accesses the same server, and again similar results when running from the desktop vs. the laptop.
What could explain the difference in time (20 sec. vs. 5 sec.)?

I have a portal site that has many iframes loading various pages. One of the iframes requires data from a database that has a slow connection and right now there is nothing we can do about the slow connection and is something we have to live with.
What seems to be happening though is that even though each page is loading seperatly in an iframe, when the page loads with the slow connection, it seems to hold up processing on the server for the other frames until the connection has been established with the server. It can be something like 10 seconds. I am guessing trying to establish the connection is holding up the worker process on IIS???
So I am trying to find a workaround bearing in mind there is nothing we can do about the slow connection for the time being? Does anyone have any suggestions? One I am thinking of is forcing this frame to load last so at least the other frames are not being held up. Another is maybe to use a seperate thread, but does anyone have any idea on this?
Thanks in advance

Hi!
I have a SQLServer 2005 running om a 64bit cluster. It is used to run a SharePoint 2007 portal. My problem is that the access to the database from the other servers in the farm is very slow.
I made a test program in C# that creates a standard .Net sqlConnection and runs a simple query 100 times. When run on the database server it takes less than a second, but when I run it from the web frontend server it takes 30 seconds. It never fails, it's just slow. The network connection is fast when copying files etc.
I see nothing out of the ordinary in the event log.
Do any of you have an idea what might be the problem or know how I could try to find the problem?
Thanks!

I've just moved a website/database application from windows server 2000 and sql server 2000 to windows server 2003 sp2 and SQL 2005 Express SP2. Database intensive pages now take about 40 seconds where before they took 2-3 seconds.
Things I've tried that haven't helped...
- I changed the ADODB connection string
from: sCnString = "dsn=mydsn;Database=mydatabase;uid=myuid;pwd=mypassword"
to: sCnString = "driver={SQL Native Client};server=myserverSQLEXPRESS;Database=mydatabase;uid=myuid;pwd=mypassword"
- Checked that autoclose is false.
What else can I look at?

Basically I've been using Visual Studio 2005 for a few weeks now moving a Pocket PC project from 2003 to 2005. When I hit the Start Debugging Button every time until today the project would rebuild and deploy to my pocket PC allowing me to debug etc but now I get
The remote connection to the device has been lost.
Please verify the device conection and restart debugging.
I used to get this problem in VS2003 sometimes and just like the numerous posts on different sites that I've looked at the problem eventually goes away and I'm none the wiser. One guy said that he found that if he went to bed the problem was resolved when he came back!
My PDA running Windows 2003 2nd Edition is directly connected to my PC via a USB port. I've rebooted my PC and done a soft reset on the PDA but it didn't help. I'm using ActiveSync 4.1.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
